Technics Set To Release A Black SL-1210GR Turntable

At CES, we first caught wind of the Technics SL-1200GR, a lower-cost version of the new generation of turntables. At £1,300 / $1,600, it’s still not a cheap DJ turntable. That said, a surprise over-the-weekend press release came in, announcing not only a new all-black SL-1210GR model, but also reaffirming Technics’ commitment to DJs. Keep reading for details.

Technics SL-1210GR: All Black Everything

The new SL-1210GR harkens back to one of the slickest models of original Technics. It makes a lot of sense to release a black variation – after all, much of the DJ gear out there is black. But aside from the color choices on this new model, all the specs are almost completely identical to the SL-1200GR that was announced at CES. It’s just a cosmetic difference.

The new SL-1200GR and black SL-1210GR are set to be available for sale in April of this year – and Technics has confirmed that the price will be roughly $1,600 in the US. It’s absolutely an expensive gear purchase – but one that’s a bit more wallet-friendly than the $4,000 reference-quality model SL-1200G/GAE.

Technics Clarifies Their Position On DJs

Many people in the DJ community bristled last month when a New York Times article came out in which Technics creative director Hiro Morishita snubbed DJs as a viable market. It was an odd choice for a brand that has had so much great natural marketing come out of the DJ community. But in this new press release for the SL-1210GR, we noticed a heavy backpedal that DJs will welcome:

“The SL-1200GR and SL-1210GR combine the best of both worlds,” says Michiko Ogawa, Director Technics at Panasonic. “We are sure both models will fulfill the expectations of Technics fans around the globe. Our objective was to extend our top range for audio enthusiasts as well as professional DJs.”

    I agree about the PLX 1000, bought a pair myself last year and just can’t take to them, really lacking and definitely not even close to my old used technics (but they do look good) so I’m going to get the new 1210s when they come out. My only reservation is the 8/16 pitch as the MK5G has the same digital pitch and was know not to be a little less accurate than the 8% only versions of other models.

    So, did Hiro get fired over that remark? You can’t just insult a large portion of your market and expect that market to just “take it.”

    On a different note, will there be appliqué skins that DJs can customize their decks with?

    I’m not on the market for turntables, but I’ve seen plenty of people customizing their rigs, and if this is going to be the new standard, then making each deck “customized” might be what the Doctor ordered.

    Technics – take my money!!

    Reading all these comments, it’s a turntable not a CDJ, it doesn’t need any fancy features, it just does the job. Period.

    It seems that nobody cares that this is the real deal! Made in Japan, on the same tools as 40 years ago made by staff who are paid more than the average American manufacturing worker. Yes they cost more than every other DJ turntable, this is why!!

    Don’t get me wrong, I think the Stantons are a great turntable, but I will saving for technics.

    Who knows, in ten years, turntables may have built in laser beams, screens, sync buttons and other fads, but Quality and reliability never go out of fashion

    At the of it all, it might be Keith Richards playing on a technics turntable as the last living things on this planet

  • I love all the upgrades they’re making to gear these days (I REALLY DO), but unless it’s gonna be an industry standard where it’s in all the clubs, I’m just not seeing the point (in getting accustom to their features). Ive had so much variations of gear that in the end, all that matters is what are you gonna rock on when theres people there to see you. For me, it’s either what’s already there or what’s it”s in my bag. Gotta strike when the irons hot and shorty’s good to go. I’m juss sayin. #carpedium

    I guess snubbing DJ’s was not such a good idea, for all my support for 30 years in the business I can tell Technics/Panasonic you gave me the right inspiration I needed to sell my old technics and to look at the new stuff, I think Pioneer is a hard pill to swallow but it is what it is…. Sayonara Technics.

    I was very disappointed to reveal the PLX-1000 as a clone from unpin technologies.
    The new Denon looks interesting choice. If I had the money I would buy new pair of Technics 1210 GR

  • after 23 years of service from my first pair of Tech 12s, I’m just quietly saving away while everyone is complaining. Hanpin decks are a no-win – the PLX 1000 looks incredible in videos and photos, looks cheap and feels cheap in person – ie definitely not worth $700. So as I save up, its really only 3 options:

    [1] Stoky refurb of the last few years of the MK5 for $850
    [2] Checking out the Denon VL12s for $899 ( would need to see after being tricked by Pioneer PLX1000 marketing)
    [3] Getting a pair of the new Technics 1210GRs – which is pricy as hell but will last me till I’m 80 years old, especially since these will stay in studio and not get hauled around to dodgy warehouses and outdoor rave parties

          I hope these last you the same since they aren’t. Price is not a sure value since you saw with Pioneer so expecting similar specs from different products could be a expensive mistake if finally these aren’t made equal.

      i came from technics mk2 and mk5, now have plx1000, they feel the same to the touch, perform much better, look better and match my other kit. how do you know the new technics will last you 80 years?

    The sl1200 is by far the most iconic deck in DJ history… without any argument. However, Panasonic has contributed 0% to the future of DJing. There’s really no reason to re-release a deck, even at that price point. That’s not a contribution, that’s robbery.

        I’ve been using 1200s from 1996 until a year ago. I bought the Stanton str8 150s. Now I keep my 1200s at home. I was hesitant to get the stantons, but I’m super glad I did. These Hanpin junks are tanks!

          I love hanpins. My favorite being the Reloop RP-8000. It’s is a modified super OEM and with a stated Wow and Flutter of 0.01%. On top of that it features adjustable torque, BPM display, Performance pads, and Track load/Scroll when used with Serato. IMO better than anyother table (overall rating). I was sad to read the new Denon VL12 State on thier website Wow & Flutter: < 0.15%… I guess it doesn't matter now that serato 1.9.6 now has anti drift…. Lots of competition in the turntable world going on right now with New tables for 2017 from Technics, Denon, and Stanton.

            High end Hanpins have a wow/flutter of .1%, you were off by a decimal point. These Technics have a wow/flutter of .025%, where the older ones are .033%.

            Yes, comment was ironic.They manipulate with “typos” and different standard measurements. However, old Technics is also 0.025 w&f, 0.035 is peak.

            I don’t think that we’re getting all the specs yet. WRMS on the old 1200 is listed at .01%, .025% WRMS (JIS C5521). The peak is measured using IEC 98. These are plainly listed as .025% WRMS.

            How much are Stokios plus shipping from Japan? Seems like they come pretty close to the price of new GR. The GR’s have couple of features more plus the spare parts in future would not be a problem.

            I see, that seems fine enough. But, when thinking twice, it is missing dustcover, mat, headshell, probably hinges = about $100-150 >>> approaches $1000 total. So, some $600 difference to a brand new (which may drop a bit after a while). The new one has better feet, better chassis isolation, rca terminals, 16% pitch, 78 rpm. Maybe you don’t need these but if you mod MK2-5 with them they’ll cost even more. Also future parts sourcing is a less of a concern with the GR. So…idk, imo saving up for GR is worth it, too.

            To be fair… dust covers will get in the way of my set up, my cdjs are set overhanging my current beater turtables, my Shure White Labels are good enough for right now and I should have my order of 125 pair of custom slips in about a month and a half or so (100 going out for distribution). Other than that, I do repairs and mods… including rca terminals and grounded plugs. I fix electronics and solder projects for in my spare time. Lots of after market parts and PCBs out there, you just have to scrape a little for them.

        Moving forward, panisonic isn’t offering anything innovative for the future. I do understand that their quality is unmatched, but we can both agree that DJ culture is based on technology.           New motor IS innovation. Denon is “innovative” by adding light rings under the platter lol, while keeping the wow and flutter at ridiculous 0.15% Btw it’s modified oem deck from another Chinese manufacturer. Keep your hopes real – nothing beats the Technics.

            A decrease in wow & flutter is definitely an improvement. I don’t know if I’d call it innovative though.
            Denon is still a completely new deck though, right?! Chinese made or not it still has the chance of being a really good deck.

            Now the numark ttx was innovative (although I had a motor overheat on me [mk1 version] during an outdoor party in the sun, which is why I switched back to 1200’s.)

            The 1200’s are quality and after 20 years I still like to stare at them ’cause they’re still sexy AF. They used to be quality at a great price. Now they’re just quality at very high price.

            See above comment. Denon is improved Yahorng oem, not something they created on their own like Technics. And by “improved” you won’t get more than isolation and torque, possibly tonearm bearings.You don’t need 2 pairs of eyes to spot the Gemini tonearm.

            Btw would like to hear what you consider innovative on the Denon.

            Btw2 Denon Hifi turntables for the last 10-15 years were Hanpins, including the 100th anniversary edition that costed $2500. You get the idea who you are dealing with here.

            Yahorng also made the Numark TTX – not exactly a bad turntable.

            I’d say the new Denon turntables are different (with a chance of beeing better!) because there is no such super oem platform from Yahorng like from Hanpin. They might have used the tonearm base, but i hope for some newly developed stuff in there, as well.

            That Denon 100th anniversary edition was a big joke, though!

            Anyway…
            As pointed above, Denon could be improved in terms of torque and isolation, maybe stability of tonearm for scratchers. W&F remains high. That said it’s in the league of oems and yes they do the job. Technics is way above and shouldn’t be compared. If one does not see its quality it’s worthless trying to explain it.

            Never said the Denon is better than Technics (and I would never consider selling my M5Gs for them).
            Just saying it would be good for many to have a (better) alternative to the Hanpin players.

Let me try inferring a little… I can’t imagine why InMusic would discontinue the TT200, TT500, and TTX just so they can put out an old stock Yahorng in the form of the TT250 if they had been using that OEM the whole time. Seems more likely to me they just switched to Yahorng and chose not to renew a contract with the former line’s OEM, hence the first unit they put out under the new OEM relationship is a pre-existing Yahorng table to fill the sudden gap while they design something from scratch. Unless someone says InMusic told them otherwise specifically, I’ll assume it’s proprietary info. Interestingly, the first run of the X2 was of Italian manufacture.

          Damage control blah blah…You people really think a corporation like Panasonic/Technics does not have a slightest clue how to run their business and would make such mistakes? You are wrong, they did it on purpose just to sparkle the “outrage” and further play with the existing thirst for a proper tt like the 1200 is. No other tt has that level of build quality and performance, being primarily audiophile while dj capable. If you appreciate chameleon lightning on your tt more than w&f then you know nothing about what makes a good turntable and don’t deserve anything above a trashy oem.

            They responded with the new product within days of the outrage… the people who think it’s damage control obviously have no concept how long a company like Pioneer to slate a project. They also never said they were excluding DJ’s originally, just that they didn’t want to limit themselves to them. Calm yoselves

        It’s fun how people rant about the price, yet part of them are ok upgrading CDJs every 2-3 years for 2k+ one deck.

        Will wait for reviews but keeping my modded MK5s with Gold–plated detachable terminals. Curious about this if they prove to be substantially superior than my MK5s, if it is just slightly better then no update.
