you could make a screen like the Token much cheaper than $1000 but it wouldn't be touchscreen... just buy a projector and some safetyglass. I bought a projector last month for £80 and it does 1024x768 at reasonable brightness.
If you wanted touchscreen then you use one of these things: http://www.nextwindow.com/products/2...uchscreen.html (expensive!) or go with the Jonny Lee technique - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgKCrGvShZs (very cheap!)
Personally, I think a combination of one of those screens with a tranditional controller would be the best solution. If you had a Token style screen with your waveforms displayed across the screen and a tracklist / record box at the bottom then this would give the crowd enough visual feedback for them to see what you're doing (great thing about Token is you can see through the glass). I'd then use a more traditional hardware controller for all the mixing (eq's, etc). This would solve one of the biggest problems of laptop dj's - you can stare at both the screen AND the audience at the same time without looking like you're reading your emails. I'd probably also have a camera pointing at my controller with the video projected behind me... but that's another story!
Heres more info on how the touchscreen worx!!!
