Double your Controls in Traktor- with one button.

This one is for the Traktor users out there although some other software may have similar tools. Lets say you are using a VCi-100 to control decks A and B. Everything is working well expect that every control is used up and now you also want to get your hands on decks C or D. How do you do that without buying a 2nd VCi-100? Its easy- and all you need is ONE free button.

MIDI ASSIGN 101

You need have some basic understanding of how to assign midi to functions in Traktor. Theoretically assigning midi to Traktor is quite simple. In Preferences, your going to look for midi setup. All you do is choose the assignment for the feature that you would like to control in the “ADD” drop down menu on the left.

The assignment now shows up and can be assigned. Now you need to hit the Learn Key and twist the midi knob or button you would like to use to control that assignment. If its shaded in red then you have a problem (that knob is also assigned to some other function in Traktor) If its green then congrats you have connected a knob to an assignment.

THE PAGES

The trick to getting a lot of function out of a few buttons is Traktors Midi pages. There are 4 different pages and each one will not interact or interfere with the other. So, for example, you could have a jog wheel assigned to deck A on page one and Deck B,C and D on pages 2,3 and 4 respectively. Normally the the jog wheel will only control deck A because pages 2,3 and 4 have to be engaged by pressing and holding a midi button in order to work.

You first need to find the right assignment in the same midi window.

Its under Pages/Midi/Select Midi page #.

In the above example, I would assign 3 buttons to select each page. Hopefully the buttons would be close to my jog wheel so i can hold them while using the wheel. Now I would label each button according to which page it controls, Deck B,C,D for pages 2,3,4. So, finally when I press down the deck B button the job wheel now controls deck B. You can set up as many controls as you want on each page and get a lot of power out of a small space.

REAL WORLD USE

Take a look at the controls on the “Ean Golden VCI-100” there are many instances here that use multiple layers. The deck copy button engages a layer, the deck C button engages a layer and several layers are engaged by foot switches which turn on the cue juggling actions. In the end the TKS for this VCI-100 is HUGE. 4 pages with almost 200 assignments per page!

Indeed they did, this has been replaced with modifiers which is an improved version of pages. Do a search for modifiers in the search box on the top right of the site and you will get some useful articles on the subject 🙂

    good news!

on page 236 you descibed it also.

  • Ean Golden

yes- I am trying to find ways to make that update easy for people that allready have a vci. the special ed. ones will ship with 1.2 and 1.3

  • Anthony

So,this will be firmware 1.3.or something like that..

to work with your new layout.

to update,if possible, is it the same procedure as with the 1.1-1.2 firmware?

  • Ean Golden

no rewiring needed but new firmware yes. the firmware changes the way the buttons send messages.

  • Anthony

    hi Ean,

was wondering if you did some rewiring inside the vci,

for the 2 center effects, master effect and the effect on

To be honest guys- this is going to take more than the comments section to explain fully. I will try and schedule a full video on the subject that will walk everyone through this concept. Understand it may be a little while though as we are very busy with the site in general.

I am looking forward for the video!

sorry anthony i havent seen your previous post ,you searched the Traktor forums already, ive also seen the post there for the ?hold? and ?output? into trigger and toggle outside traktor in the tks-file but i haven tried it yet, you might have made a mistake in the tks.

did you mirror the buttons on each page? when you switch from page to page the button must be in both pages.

  • dIm

    hi anthony,

read the article again were it says about the midi pages

" pages 2,3 and 4 have to be engaged by pressing and holding a midi button in order to work."

its a Traktor function to switch pages you have to hold down the switch, when you let it go it will go back to page 1.

    Hi Ean,

maybe you can help me out.

I made on every midipage a deck, and want to use the sync buttons to toggle

between decks.left sync button light on= deck A

left sync button light off= deck B,

this works, but for the right sync button this is not so easy.I have to push several times to switch between Deck B & D.How behave the global commands to each other?

It looks like midipage 1 is the main window.Or the sync buttons can not handle two

    global commands.

    QUOTE.

Forget The above questions, because I found out its not gonna work.

    Another Question;

    I Have DeckAB=left sync DeckBC=right sync

    DeckAD=play/pause left DeckCD=play/pause right

Is It possible to send a command to a button that is lit,so that for example the bleu led of the left sync button goes out when i press the right one?

    greetings

    Hi Ean,

Maybe it is a good idea to set up a tutorial/forum, or something like that,

    for programming midi.

And go deeper in the programming of software.

I am curieus and have a lot of questions.

    Cheers

Ok Ok I get what you are saying, so it's not completely impossible it just requires alot of work to acheive it? I guess observing the values sent through midipipe should help me figure out what is what right? Then insert these values into the tks file using textedit as such specific changes cannot be done within traktor. Ean, How did you set up yours? Also would you be able to provide some information (such as which values correspond to which effect) that you obtained through researching this?

    Thanks in advance,

  • Ean Golden

That is very relevant to the subject though. What you are asking for is physically impossible inside traktor without customizing your midi controller or modifying the message it sends. Lets say you want a H/L filter for instance that can only be accessed if the button sends a value of 63 because the filter is in the middle of the list. A beat masher is 127.

Buttons normally send 2 values, 0 and then 127. So in my special edition all my buttons have been set up to send the values needed to select those specific effects.

  • Scratchmaster

Hi, I don't think this is completely relevant to the 4 decks issue but does anyone know how to make a specific knob or button on the vci control a specific effect or parameters of a specific effect within traktor? Because Ean seems to have been able to do it with his set-up (Eg. buttons directing straight to flanger reverb delay and a special echo) but I just can't get my head round it. If anyone has any time I'd be very grateful.

    Thanks,

  • Anthony

use a slider or knob. that will lock it down.

  • Anthony

    hello,

I've tried the tks file from felix,

    Thanks Felix.

But is there a way to "lock" the midipage,

without constantly holding down the button?

the global commands seems to have only 'hold' and 'output'

  • djgrbs

    great. thanks, i’m settled now.

  • Editor

yes- everythign is correct there. I think foot peddles are the best way to go for sure for changing layers.

  • djgrbs

I forgot to add this the previous post that my Master Clock is set to "Master" for Tempo. Is this all correct?

    Thanks!

  • djgrbs

Okay. I got it working now. Hold down the black button near "Tempo" on the VCI-100. I have never in my 4 months of owning a VCI-100 knew that there are 4 buttons you can push-down on the VCI-100. I thought those are just light indicators. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I also went into my "Preference" setting under "Deck Preferences" > "Transport" in Traktor 3.3 and set my "Fine Pitch Range" to "+/-6.0%". Is this all correct on what I'm doing to match you guys???

Is there an easier way to engage FX Deck C and D while holding down the "black button" Maybe a Foot Switch or any other trick you could suggest?

    Appreciate the help guys!

  • djgrbs

<blockquote cite="#comment-814">he means to engage control over decks C and D you need to hold down the small black button on the upper left hand corner. While holding down that button, the deck A and B controlls become deck C and D.

What button are you guys talking about? I'm still confused. Where's the "small black button?"

no, felix modified the standard TKS and added deck C and D support. he changed the way the pitch faders perform which I also do on all my TKS because it allows from more precise adjustments and does not limit the range of BPM changes.

    hope that helps

    Here is the link:

    http://www.zischi.info/VCI_4_Decks.tks

I just deleted the pitch reset when turning back tempo to 0 because i use the master clock an then only 6% fr fine tempo.

To geht control of deck C and D hold the first black button on the top left.

    Check is out.

Its for Traktor 3.3. Just switched the TAP and ON/OFF buttons for the effects because of traktor changes and VCI Hardware mapping.

  • Matthias R. Wegener

    Hey Guys,

i just returned from my first live afterhour set in a professional, large club in Berlin, Germany. I played Minimal Techno, Electro, Deephouse and Techhouse.

My weapons of choice were the Vestax VCI-100 (Black, imported from Japan) for and the M-Audio Trigger Finger (for additional effects and on the fly loop editing control).

There is only one word to describe my experience:

    FANTASTIC.

I do not have any DJing experience with CDs or Vinyl, i just started using Traktor two years ago and was kinda pushed to Mixing, as all my friends told me that i have a great taste in music that i should spread. But Vinyl was no option for me, as I think it limits what you can do with music, and i knew that Vinyl mixing is a whole other story. Thus, i started learning using the software on a KDJ-500, then the silver VCI which i quickly sold in December to get the Black VCI-100 in January (from Ishibashi Web Shop). Simultaneously, i studied music and electronic music in general, many hours a day, using all of my time my university and my girlfriend granted me, and started distributing sets i created with Traktor.

Today, i got lucky because the manager of the club was a friend of my sister and although Berlin has a strong Save-the-Vinyl culture, this gave me the opportunity of playing a crowd, professionally. A few DJs (of course, vinyl only guys) looked down their nose when i arrived with my gear, but one Serato guy helped me connect everything to the A&H Xone92 so that i could mix inside my Mac Book Pro 15,4".

when i started, some of them looked what i did and one of em even started giggling when i hit the "Sync" button – but that was the first and only time: As i started using 3 and 4 Decks and firing up my pre-defined loops and cue points (not too much, as it had to stay minimal), they soon nodded and shut their mouths.

After 4 hours and 200 records, I finally had them conviced that Digital DJing is something to be reckoned with. And i have a meeting with a professional DJ booking agency in Berlin next week, as their first Midi Controller DJ.

    Thank you,

    DJTECHTOOLS.

This is a great feature in Traktor, it only takes 2 pages to have 2x VCI-100's, which in turn leaves 2 pages for 2x "Ean Golden" layouts for massive control over all 4 decks.

Traktor is an amazing program but i believe the lack of VST effects support, or the lack of being able to be hosted in a VST supported DAW is holding it back alot in comparison to Deckadance.

I have just recently booted up Deckadance in Ableton Live running as a VST and channeling the outputs to two effects channels, each deck having its own channel. Then these two channels feed into single track for master effects. These effects are then tied onto 3 of the unused effects parameters on the VCI,. While being still being really cool, it doesn't provide nearly enough control over the VSTs! So i look forward to pushing this sort of idea to help get me more control over my VST's. Great tutorial!
