hi! is that I can use the 1.4 firmware with traktor scratch duo 1.2.7???
thank you in advance
Samwas
Let me get this straight before I make a mistake…
I have the old (silver) VCI-100. Not the SE.
If I complete all these steps:
Purchase the firmware upgrade kit
Install firmware upgrade software (Windows)
Download the VCI-100SE Firmware (Version 1.4)
Install the matching Midi Map files
Then I can use my controller like Ean’s SE in the videos and equip the black overlay?
Are there more steps that I need to do prior?
Can I go directly from my current system to 1.4?
Last question… I can do this with my VCI-100 correct? I do not need to have the black SE for this do I?
Thanks in advance

Is it possible to upgrade a Vestax VCI-100 with this or is it for DJTT’s VCI-100SE only. I have a VCI-100 (non-SE) and want to do the update to 1.4 in order to remap my VCI to the Standard V4 Overlay mapping. I don’t want to buy the adapter and try to perform the firmware update if it’s not compatable.

Ean Golden did you stop selling the firmware upgrade kit for the VCI 100?

Hi, I’m in the middle of trying to update my firmware to 1.4, I’ve loaded the program, I’ve followed the video everything goes well , I get to the page where you type in 24 for the chrystal speed, then you go next, then next to the page where you can select the firmware – this page does come up for me, what I get is a page that says ” Finish ” and that’s it, no way of selecting the firmware.

Hello Everyone,
Since I can hardly share my sensation with anyone around me in real life I thought I’d share my experiences with you.
The only ‘Windows person’ I could find was my father who doesn’t live nearby so I made a trip to combine a visit with trying to upgrade my VCI-100 after receiving the kit from DJTT.
I prepared myself by bringing a serial cable (2 times ‘male’ plug) but after setting up everything (opening up VCI-100 and having my laptop on the side with the instruction video) I discovered that the only port on the Windows computer was ‘female’ so I actually needed a different serial cable with one ‘female’ plug and a ‘male’
Since it was late already I could not go down-town to search for a different cable so..
I took off the plug and connected the wires (2red/3orange/5green) to the ‘female upgrade kit plug’ without using a plug at all.
If you examine the upgrade kit closely you will see that only 3 pins are being used, there’s a fourth (nr. 8) connected but it was my guess that that one is only soldered to keep the plug steady.
It seems my guess was right because after making sure the wires were connected neatly I pushed the flash button and the upgrading was successfully within 30 sec. !!!
My dad’s computer runs on Windows 7.
So thank you DJTT for making this possible and thank you everyone else for sharing your experiences.
DON”T TRY THIS AT HOME or..DO TRY THIS AT HOME if you are very sure what you are doing..
ps.
I’m pretty lost in my search for the perfect midi mapping, I use Traktor Pro for mixing Minimal (mainly) and I’m not into scratching or too many other tricks but I am into looping and using 3rd or 4th deck for own recorded samples and thus using cue-points, does anyone have a tip because there is just a little too much information here if you dive in late, like me..thank you in advance.

Anyone with the problem “Error No 15024: Boot failed” probably uses windows 7
had this same problem but consiguo solve.

Got the kit, followed the instructions, everything went 100%
Thank you very much to everyone involved!!!

i’m getting error Error No 15024: Boot failed. I bought a brand new Serail to Serial DB9 cable and the firmware upgrade kit… tried this on 3 different computers, all give me the same error. What do i do to get 1.4 working?!?!?! Help much appreciated!

You would have to build a jumper cable to go from the connection, then mount the upgrade kit somewhere inside the VCI because there’s no room for it to stay connected between the boards. It’s been discussed in the forum, but I can’t find the thread.

Never mind. I’m retarded… Don’t make the same mistake I did. If you’re having problems after following all of the djtechtools trouble shooting, unplug the chip from the VCI board and plug it back in and try again.

Question, i am planning on doing a firmware update to my vci-100 silver i got a few days ago from version 1.2 to version 1.3. I was just wandering if there is some additional information regarding which device to choose in the firmware update software. This video suggests choosing device h8/300h h8/3052f, is that standard device for all the 1.2 versions?
Ronaldo
This update is for the VCI-100 or just for the VCI-100 SE? In the video above is for the VCI-100 SE only.
You can upgrade using a mac if you use bootcamp and use windows on your mac to do the update.

PLEEEEASE ANSWER THIS SIMPLE QUESTION/
Is it possible to upgrade a VCI 100 to firmware 1.3 using a Mac????
thanks
ZachDero
Make sure to grab it by the plastic piece and not the wires. If you still can’t get it, try to pry one side up gently with a small flathead screwdriver
Ryan
I’ve got a quick question. Is there a trick to unplugging the left harness? I’ve been pulling on the thing and it doesn’t seem to budge. Sounds stupid but it’s getting frustrating.
If you couldn’t tell, I’m not super tech savvy.
Thanks
Henrik
Upgrade-kit arrived today, everthing worked perfect. Thanks to djtechtools my 3rd effect-button now works perfect!

Wait…software update is only for windows? What about Mac? Could I upgrade a Vci-100 to 1.3 and then use it on a Mac or no?

Hi
I noticed one firmware bug in 1.3
The Vinyl Mode(Scratch) button on deck 2 doesn’t send any midi signal when pressed down , but only when it is released. On Deck 1 the button works fine.
When can I buy the firmware 1.4? I need urgently to act in new shows with a beatbox singer.
Thanks and sorry for my English
Cyberboy
Bought the upgrade kit.
Downloaded flash tool.
Tried to flash with 3 different serial, NOT USB, cables.
Triple-checked soldering points for serial connector and pcb connector…everything it’s ok.
But I always get the same result:
Error No 15024: Boot failed
Ean… for the sake of God what’s wrong???
HELP PLEASE!

I am also interested in the 14-bit pitch fader firmware (1.4) upgrade (I heard the hardware is actually only 10-bit, but that still supports 8X more resolution). Is that ever going to happen? If no one is working on it, I would love to get my hands on the source code for 1.3 and try writing it myself (I am somewhat proficient in low level coding).

Ok, now i know i need to upgrade my firm ware.
When will more firmware ugrade units become available?

Hi Ean,
Firstly cheers for such a great and informative site,
I just bought a black VCI-100, since it does not have a green sticker on the back i assume its running firmware 1.1?
Am i right in thinking i can upgrade my VCI-100 firmware using my mate’s PC, then continue to use it with with my MAC?
Is anyone else a bit pissed off that Vestax continues to sell units with effectively obsolete firmware, it just doesn’t make sense to me.
Thanks for any help you can give me,
Will

I know Ean said ‘You can tell if you have 1.3 by triggering the snap button which is the button above the right corner of the left jog wheel. If that button toggles on and off with 2 clicks- then you have 1.3. Do this test with the VCI on but not connected to traktor’.
This didn’t seem to work for me, three clicks maybe. Perhaps it didn’t work after all. All I need is a sign, any sign.

If it said it was successful then it was successful, the program doesn’t give false positives. Another way you can test to see if you have 1.3 installed is to hold the top black button closest to the on off switch on the back of the unit. If your holding the button when you turn the unit on the led next to this button lights up for a few seconds (indicating you have booted into 1.2 firmware mode) – to go back to 1.3 just turn your unit off, then back on again.

You can use a usb to serial adapter, this isnt our recommended approach to upgrading the firmware users seem to have more issues using the usb to serial adapters, but it does work. In an ideal situation you would use a computer with a serial port for the easiest upgrade.

that is not correct. There are several things in the 1.3 update that fix problems with the VCi-100 and several functions that Traktor Pro can not duplicate. It is possible to use the mappings with 1.2 and Pro with only a few bugs and missing features but 1.3 is still much better.

The firmware update cable is a hardware device that allows you to update the firmware on PC or Mac. If you dont have something that will do the job allready you will need to buy the update cable.

hi ean,
longtime lurker, thanks for all your work. looking at the out-of-stock firmware update board, i can't help but notice it just appears to be a max232 level shifter, caps, and some headers.
if this is the case, might i suggest you or an intrepid reader consider an alternative part: the following board — while not made for the vci 100's header — is a TTL-serial-to-USB converter:
i'm guessing it'd just be a matter of getting the pins connected to the right place. (it is a pity the vci's mcu isn't reprogammable via the built in usb connection.)
cheers..

yes- thats 1.3 alright. That was the only way I could make one TSI file work for 1.2 and 1.3 users. You can change the SNAP mapping to hold and it will work the right way.

So, if i have a vci with 1.2 firmware do i need the upgrade pcb or is this only for people with 1.1 firmware. How do i upgrade to 1.3? Is it using the software and the usb lead it comes with?
Why when I download the 1.3 firmware it always downloauds as MPEG Quicktime file PLS can you send me the one that will work
your computer thinks its a quick time file because its not sure what format it is in. If you follow the steps in the forum and video and load the file in the renessas program then it will be recognized. The file does not get double clicked but is loaded directly into the program.

no, thomas, the vci-100 only sends out one message per button and is not configurable. firmware 1.3 sends out specific multiple messages that are useful in traktor.
Thomas
Oh, okay, I haven't got the VCI YET! 😀
So it can't already bind one button to more than one function???!!
mycole
Exactly. The firmware upgrade changes the behavior of some buttons and reconfigures midi notes. It allows multiple midi notes to be sent out by a single knob or button, so that Ean's special configuration can be used.
Thomas
Donøt quite get it yet. What is it that the firmware do? upgrade your MIDI controller in some way????
G=Reg
I'm also having trouble on the last step of installation. I posted in the forums, any help is greatly appreciated!!
mycole
Has anyone else that's gotten the upgrade kit had trouble with getting the VCI-100 into Boot Mode? I've posted on the forum but there's only a few people looking at that right now. Any help is appreciated!
Yes, everything produced by us will always ship worldwide. A full kit, once all the parts are in, will be available. While we wont be making plates, there is something much, much better in the works that will make everyone very happy. More on that soon.
For all support and questions about the firmware update process please visit the forum:
So, I got mine today! Just to clarify. Can I use either a normal serial cable or a serial to USB cable to connect to the firmware kit? I have a serial port. I just want to make sure because will need to buy either cable.
Hedgehog
Will a delivery of the whole kit to Germany be possible?
ATP – "Ok…so this firmware update basically turns and VCI-100 into the SE? So I don’t have to try and top the eBay bidding to get the revised features of the SE? That would make me happy."
Yes thats correct 🙂
sgb
I think the credit goes out to Midifiddler (sp?) for creating this, but credit for Ean to actually getting distributing this beauty I'll post a link for the 1.2 firmware once I confirm I get some flashing in.
By the way, I've got my money on that you can flash from VMWare/Parallels/Bootcamp on your mac, but I'll post my results once I get some testing in.
sgb
oquela
Does the upgrade kit mini board stay inside the unit?
How do you go between 1.2 and 1.3 firmware once you update?
How much will the plates be?
Thanks to everyone responsible for this!
BTW: any future mods (like blue LEDs) in the works?
Ok…so this firmware update basically turns and VCI-100 into the SE? So I don't have to try and top the eBay bidding to get the revised features of the SE? That would make me happy.
mycole
I'm going to play the VCI-100SE feature tour vidoes on loop until my firmware arrives.
mycole
Thanks for all the hard work Ean & team! I'm so excited to be rockin the new firmware! It's Christmas in August! Then, when I get my new plates in Sept it'll be Christmas in September.
I had the same question, and mr. golden said as of now there will be no mac version. However, quick 1-time upgrade. Get a PC buddy to help ya out and you should be fine.
luv2xra
Just one question, when will the mac version will be release?
luv2xra
This is just the upgrade kit, for the firmware only. The plates will be for another day. This kit is also going to to give you, as advertise, the VCI-100 SE functions. I would suggest to start reading the documents and seen the videos. The VCI-100 SE support forum should guide you with any FAQ and issues. I suggest to read the first three posts, they deal with both issues.
barf
Ok i shouldn't say stuff before watching the video 😛
nice one! keep it up
although i'm wondering how you would connect the upgrade kit serial port to a laptop if u didn't have such a cable, but would have a serial port
barf
RayU, i got the feeling there aren't gonna be plates to be bought 🙁
Dj Wills
Let me ask you this so the vci 100 will be with the same fuctions as vci ean golden edition???
Dj Wills
Ean Golden you are the best forever man!!! cant wait to get mine ty so much
RayU
"the VCI-100 upgrade kits will be on sale in mid September"
that ^kit mentioned will include the firmware upgrade kit and plates?
Joe Smite
Thanks so much for your generous work! ..very helpful.
G-Reg
Yes, FINALLY!! Thank you very much, cant wait to get mine!
hi! is that I can use the 1.4 firmware with traktor scratch duo 1.2.7???
thank you in advance

I downloaded the latest version of Flash development toolkit 4.7
link for download here.

I had to change the baud rate to 9600 for the device to flash. The default 38400 was crashing the application.

You would have to build a jumper cable to go from the connection, then mount the upgrade kit somewhere inside the VCI because there’s no room for it to stay connected between the boards. It’s been discussed in the forum, but I can’t find the thread.
Can the VCI-100 operate with the firmware upgrade adapter attached? I was thinking of modding my SE (once it arrives) and adding a permanent upgrade port.
Never mind. I’m retarded… Don’t make the same mistake I did. If you’re having problems after following all of the djtechtools trouble shooting, unplug the chip from the VCI board and plug it back in and try again.
Do I download the firmware upgrade software directly from renesas or do you have link to it?
Question, i am planning on doing a firmware update to my vci-100 silver i got a few days ago from version 1.2 to version 1.3. I was just wandering if there is some additional information regarding which device to choose in the firmware update software. This video suggests choosing device h8/300h h8/3052f, is that standard device for all the 1.2 versions?
This update is for the VCI-100 or just for the VCI-100 SE? In the video above is for the VCI-100 SE only.
You can upgrade using a mac if you use bootcamp and use windows on your mac to do the update.
PLEEEEASE ANSWER THIS SIMPLE QUESTION/
Is it possible to upgrade a VCI 100 to firmware 1.3 using a Mac????
thanks
Make sure to grab it by the plastic piece and not the wires. If you still can’t get it, try to pry one side up gently with a small flathead screwdriver
I’ve got a quick question. Is there a trick to unplugging the left harness? I’ve been pulling on the thing and it doesn’t seem to budge. Sounds stupid but it’s getting frustrating.
If you couldn’t tell, I’m not super tech savvy.
Thanks
Upgrade-kit arrived today, everthing worked perfect. Thanks to djtechtools my 3rd effect-button now works perfect!
Greets from Germany 🙂
Wait…software update is only for windows? What about Mac? Could I upgrade a Vci-100 to 1.3 and then use it on a Mac or no?

Should be back in in about 1-2 weeks tops.
when is this coming back in stock
Bought the upgrade kit.
Downloaded flash tool.
Tried to flash with 3 different serial, NOT USB, cables.
Triple-checked soldering points for serial connector and pcb connector…everything it’s ok.
But I always get the same result:
Error No 15024: Boot failed
Ean… for the sake of God what’s wrong???
HELP PLEASE!
I am also interested in the 14-bit pitch fader firmware (1.4) upgrade (I heard the hardware is actually only 10-bit, but that still supports 8X more resolution). Is that ever going to happen? If no one is working on it, I would love to get my hands on the source code for 1.3 and try writing it myself (I am somewhat proficient in low level coding).
when is the 14bit pitch fader firmware upgrade released?
(firmware 1.4)
Yes Alex, you can use the upgraded firmware you can use it with a mac. You only need a pc to do the upgrade
once i have upgraded the firmwire can i use ir with my mac?
Hey can I do the firmware update to version 1.3 and still be able to use with traktor le.
can i upgrade the vci-100 firmware on my pc and then be able to use it with my MAC.

I tried all way but i think my firm upgrade kit is defect i send the kit back for a new one
Thanks for any help you can give me,
Will

If it said it was successful then it was successful, the program doesn’t give false positives. Another way you can test to see if you have 1.3 installed is to hold the top black button closest to the on off switch on the back of the unit. If your holding the button when you turn the unit on the led next to this button lights up for a few seconds (indicating you have booted into 1.2 firmware mode) – to go back to 1.3 just turn your unit off, then back on again.

You can use a usb to serial adapter, this isnt our recommended approach to upgrading the firmware users seem to have more issues using the usb to serial adapters, but it does work. In an ideal situation you would use a computer with a serial port for the easiest upgrade.

just wanted to add another successful vci-100 / 1.3 firmware upgrade success story. received my new 1.3 kit yesterday, and rocking my “new” vci-100 today. thanks ean! : )
I wanted to check did I read correctly on your site that soon it won't be neccessary to update to Firmway 1.3 as you are working with Native and they will be providing updates to Tracktor Pro. If this is correct do you know when this planned for.
.
that is not correct. There are several things in the 1.3 update that fix problems with the VCi-100 and several functions that Traktor Pro can not duplicate. It is possible to use the mappings with 1.2 and Pro with only a few bugs and missing features but 1.3 is still much better.
Thanks for sending me some information yesterday re updates. Once agan many thanks for your work.
How can we upgrade my VCI 100 if I have a Mac computer

Please advise, do I need to buy the firmware update or can I download for free the 1.3, I am using a mac. All advice gratefully recieved!
Ian

The firmware update cable is a hardware device that allows you to update the firmware on PC or Mac. If you dont have something that will do the job allready you will need to buy the update cable.

Thank you Ean Golden, i put my vci 100 in firmware 1.3 with the kit, it tooks me 25 minutes and the black overlays is more difficult 45 minutes lol
As you can read from the above comments, you need Windows ..
ean i have a mac and am not sure how to do the firmware update because the program you have posted to use is for windows only…. what do i do
hi ean,
longtime lurker, thanks for all your work. looking at the out-of-stock firmware update board, i can't help but notice it just appears to be a max232 level shifter, caps, and some headers.
if this is the case, might i suggest you or an intrepid reader consider an alternative part: the following board — while not made for the vci 100's header — is a TTL-serial-to-USB converter:

i'm guessing it'd just be a matter of getting the pins connected to the right place. (it is a pity the vci's mcu isn't reprogammable via the built in usb connection.)
cheers..
lol thank you Ean but i'm on the guest list too, i'm going to make yoga lol.
Do you have a date for the firmware kit ??
Did you know you can sign up on a list and we will send you an email as soon as any of our products that you want are back in stock? Then you dont have to check back in every day 🙂

im' going to be mad i want te firmware kit, i check everyday the website for this DJ EAN hurry up, but thank you for all your work about the vestax vci 100, you're a genius
I've been waiting for this firmware kit for quite a while now. It's been out of stock forever. And now it's going to be WEEKS longer??? I'm really sad right now. If there's any way to get one earlier than "a few weeks" I'd be willing to pay double.
Hello DJ Tech Tools…Im kinda interested with the Firmware Kit….ive checked out the Store but it says that the kit is out of stock and will be back end of January…any news on the stock yet?…Thanks!
Sorry, they are being made now and should be done in a few weeks 🙂

Hey Thanks A LOT for this firmware! Im can't seem to find a TKS file that uses the new platter commands but retains the original VCI 100 midi CC's. Does this exist somewhere? Thanks again!
I’ve taken the steps to check the firmware, but I have Euro edition and the lights light up either way, at first they are green, then I click the snap button and it turns blue, then I have to click it twice (maybe 3 times) and it turns green again. yes- thats 1.3 alright.

A little confused thats all
Regards Michael
Scratch that, I changed the port to COM 5 and it worked, I was using a Sony Viao.
Hey Ean, I'm trying to install the firmware, but in going to the process, when I get to the last step with Flash, I get an error 15024 Boot failed?
Why when I download the 1.3 firmware it always downloauds as MPEG Quicktime file PLS can you send me the one that will work
your computer thinks its a quick time file because its not sure what format it is in. If you follow the steps in the forum and video and load the file in the renessas program then it will be recognized. The file does not get double clicked but is loaded directly into the program.

Thanks for the insite! You dont find stuff like this just anywhere on the internet.
Hi Ean!
I'have just upgraded my VCI-100 and now it rocks! I'm really missing the plates.
Any update about the surprise (instead of plates) you told us you are going to provide?
Thanks! ;)
Check out this post for more info:

The overlays will be coming out in about 2 weeks,
God! 😀 Then I MUST HAVE this firmware 😀
and really good job with all this Ean 😉
no, thomas, the vci-100 only sends out one message per button and is not configurable. firmware 1.3 sends out specific multiple messages that are useful in traktor.
Oh, okay, I haven't got the VCI YET! 😀
So it can't already bind one button to more than one function???!!
Exactly. The firmware upgrade changes the behavior of some buttons and reconfigures midi notes. It allows multiple midi notes to be sent out by a single knob or button, so that Ean's special configuration can be used.
Donøt quite get it yet. What is it that the firmware do? upgrade your MIDI controller in some way????
I'm also having trouble on the last step of installation. I posted in the forums, any help is greatly appreciated!!
Has anyone else that's gotten the upgrade kit had trouble with getting the VCI-100 into Boot Mode? I've posted on the forum but there's only a few people looking at that right now. Any help is appreciated!

so.
Just got my Firmware in the mail, and this afternoon will be modding it.
I will let everyone know how it turned out.

Will a delivery of the whole kit to Germany be possible?
ATP – "Ok…so this firmware update basically turns and VCI-100 into the SE? So I don’t have to try and top the eBay bidding to get the revised features of the SE? That would make me happy."
Yes thats correct 🙂
I think the credit goes out to Midifiddler (sp?) for creating this, but credit for Ean to actually getting distributing this beauty I'll post a link for the 1.2 firmware once I confirm I get some flashing in.
By the way, I've got my money on that you can flash from VMWare/Parallels/Bootcamp on your mac, but I'll post my results once I get some testing in.
sgb
Does the upgrade kit mini board stay inside the unit?
How do you go between 1.2 and 1.3 firmware once you update?
How much will the plates be?
Thanks to everyone responsible for this!
BTW: any future mods (like blue LEDs) in the works?
Ok…so this firmware update basically turns and VCI-100 into the SE? So I don't have to try and top the eBay bidding to get the revised features of the SE? That would make me happy.
I'm going to play the VCI-100SE feature tour vidoes on loop until my firmware arrives.
Thanks for all the hard work Ean & team! I'm so excited to be rockin the new firmware! It's Christmas in August! Then, when I get my new plates in Sept it'll be Christmas in September.
…So what do you have planned for Oct and Nov?
Cant wait to update, sick of my 1.1 firmware lol
@ luv2xra
I had the same question, and mr. golden said as of now there will be no mac version. However, quick 1-time upgrade. Get a PC buddy to help ya out and you should be fine.
Just one question, when will the mac version will be release?
This is just the upgrade kit, for the firmware only. The plates will be for another day. This kit is also going to to give you, as advertise, the VCI-100 SE functions. I would suggest to start reading the documents and seen the videos. The VCI-100 SE support forum should guide you with any FAQ and issues. I suggest to read the first three posts, they deal with both issues.
Ok i shouldn't say stuff before watching the video 😛
nice one! keep it up
although i'm wondering how you would connect the upgrade kit serial port to a laptop if u didn't have such a cable, but would have a serial port
RayU, i got the feeling there aren't gonna be plates to be bought 🙁
Let me ask you this so the vci 100 will be with the same fuctions as vci ean golden edition???
Ean Golden you are the best forever man!!! cant wait to get mine ty so much
"the VCI-100 upgrade kits will be on sale in mid September"
that ^kit mentioned will include the firmware upgrade kit and plates?
Thanks so much for your generous work! ..very helpful.
Yes, FINALLY!! Thank you very much, cant wait to get mine!
