Everyone knows Ableton is an amazing loop sampler for creating music on the fly with Kid beyond and many others taking the concept to new heights and beyond. Did you know that you can do the same thing within Traktor Pro using a few creative tricks? I have been working on a very simple way to “record” yourself inside of Traktor and create several layers of performance on the fly. Check out the video above for a short routine that demonstrates the concept in a very simple way. Next week Monday I will break it down and show you step by step how to do this technique yourself.
The start of the video introduces another concept I am still perfecting that you could call “Pitch n Scratch” . Instead of moving the record position back and forth, the jog wheel is used to radically change the pitch in large amounts quickly. This combined with rapid sampling creates a very cool tranform effect not unlike scratching but with a different feel and sound.
Its worth mentioning that this sampler concept has been built into the latest VCI-100 TSI version 1_6 which you can download for free. We are also producing a new batch of arcade button vci-100’s next week and you can pre-order now in the web store.

They sit and create a set up and structure that works. When updates come out they painstakingly test them until they know they are solid, and then place those in their live rigs. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if some professional DJs are still spinning on Traktor 3.2 or 3.3 or 3.4 and have another machine where they are testing and building TPro.
Ean,
Congratulations! Nice Video!
…
That video/mix is fucking amazing…
What would happen if we would change the key in very small incerements (instead of pitch/tempo)?
Hey Ean, I am on the same page when it comes to Traktor Pro. Still using 3.3 live. Some time back, I was using the pitch fader to scratch when i was playing with my band. What i did was i looped a sample and that gave it a nice effect that sounded similar but quite different from the regular scratch.
It seems like what you're doing is like the next level of what i intuitively was doing back then. Great technique man. This is why i have this site fed into my inbox directly, so that i see the updates asap. You keep up the good work bro.
Peace 🙂

thats the original song- just sampled and then looped the intro.
Ahh, that's that next level crack that keeps me coming back. Sweet tricks, and epic mash set…I especially liked the temporary cue point work that you did to make a buildup, and then how you cut the loops. Very impressive!!!

I think most of the guys I know including myself usually dont play with the brand new versions live. For instance I didnt use 3 until 3.3 and now I wont switch to pro for a few more months. With software like this it takes a little while to iron out the bugs and get everything solid.
So personally, I use 3.3 (solid) live and experiment with Pro.
Hi Ean!
This effect is really cool. I do something similar but not using the pitch to mimic scratching. In the example here I user the tune The Bomb right at the beginning of the clip here :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENDurR6Cq9s
Can't wait to see the next part of the of the article.
Aaaaaah crap… Now I might have to buy Traktor Pro after watching this. I imagine this isn't possible in 3.4 ??
Everything here is possible with Traktor 3 and Pro- they are really very simple tools used in a creative way. I am sort of angry that I never thought of the beatmasher concept before actually.

I don't think it's a TPro-only effect. If he's using the Beatmasher as a 4-beat sampler (set everything to 1/1), you just map the jog to the pitch fader it should all be available in Traktor 3.4.

you should be able to 'pitch n scratch' with any controller really. its just a matter of assigning cue points, and something to change pitch. you could use normal faders, or a nob even, but i imagine a jog wheel would feel much more intuitive
scratching gets its characteristic sound from pitch changes anyway (which is why you can't do it with key-lock on)
but with this method, it would be easier to grab those specific points to scratch, like fun voice samples 🙂
Would it be possible to do the "Pitch n Scratch" with a Bcd-3000? It looks like an awesome alternative to scratching.
Also, if you are Richie Hawtin, it's highly likely you can get prerelease versions, quick fixes and patches and so on.
forums are back up 🙂
I just woke up and fixed the problem
I was blown away when I saw Ean do this live. It's really an impressive effect. Great video!
Hi Ean, sorry for my wrong written pingback,i hope you can correct it. im sorry for that. can't wait for your explanation how your did this :).
great video, can't wait to find out what kind of tricks you pull out your sleeves for the tsi.

this is a question for ean or any traktor user. i want to start mentioning that i love traktor, or the idea of what traktor does. i first got my digital setup with stanton final scratch v2. and i didn't use in my live gigs because of all the bugs and stuff.
the idea of traktor dj studio3 and 4 decks sold the products to me, and that was the deciding factor between traktor and serato.
now, i don't think i can say that ive been 100% satisfied with any traktor updates since i first got it. every update has their own major issues. i kinda work around them, but it gets to a point that is too much frustration. a couple of days ago i was ready to record a house music demo and just the first couple of tracks you can hear beats being cut (drums beats dropping or being chopped milliseconds). and the tracking is not as great as they sell it. there is endless speed changes that just don't let a track stay in sync (i use cdjs 800mk2 im pretty sure they are .5 in pitch fader precision which should hold on way more time in sync than many of other cdjs in the market if the songs are properly sync) i have dj alongside with friends that use cds and everything works finefor them, when i dj sounds is crappy and beats are chopped off. im pretty sure this is because of the long-discussed issue (in NI forums) of the time-stretching algorithm.

i do have a nice/fast computer (macbook with 2 gigs of ram), so i don't thing is my setup!… well.. i just need some help with this? any takers?
