DJ Laptop Stand Comparison

As laptop DJs, we love blazing fast new computers, DJ software updates and new, innovative MIDI controllers. However, some of the most pivotal gear for a laptop DJ is also most often overlooked. Laptop stands can be critical components to a DJ’s setup, as you may also be using them to hold your MIDI controllers or CDJs, as well.

We have compared three laptop stands that are designed specifically for DJs — The Crane Stand, the Odyssey L Stand M and the Stanton Uberstand — to see which one has the edge for portability, ease of set-up, sturdiness and flexibility. Read the full review after the jump.

GET UP, STAND UP

Each DJ’s individual needs will determine the stand thats best for you but here are a few of the most critical areas:

Weight — How much weight will this add to your bag?

Adjustability — can the stand accommodate a range of positions and configurations?

Set-up — Is the stand easy to set up and configure?

Stability — perhaps the number-one factor for controllerists, is the stand sturdy enough for button mashing?

CRANE STAND

Using a patent-pending cam-lever and tensioning knob system, the Crane Stand is infinitely adjustable as far as what angle you what the gear to sit at. You can somewhat adjust the height in a round-about way by creating a “Z” shape and flattening or lifting the stand. To adjust, you unlock the one of the cam levers, loosen one of the tensioning knobs, adjust the base or the tray, re-tightened the knob and then lock off the cam lever. Using this system, the Crane Stand can support plenty of weight and is also the steadiest of the stands here for supporting a controller such as the VCI-100. The only potential drawback of this adjustment system is that you can do permanent damage if you try to adjust it not following the proper procedure. Read the manual first to learn the steps.

Welded together with aircraft-grade aluminum, the Crane Stand feels tremendously strong, yet weighs only 3 lbs. Folded flat, it’s only about an inch high, so you can slide it underneath a Technics 1200 turntable. Crane Hardware is a small company that makes its products in Seattle, Washington using sustainability-conscious practices. Those factors, as well as the high-quality materials used, contribute to the Crane Stand being the most expensive of the three stands here. However, we feel it is worth the investment to serious DJs.

Weight: 3 lbs.

Pros: The sturdiest and most robust laptop stand we’ve seen. Infinitely angle-adjustable.

Cons: Limited height adjustability.* Must be careful operating the tensioning knobs and cam levers.

Price: $149

*Update_ The Crane Stand is now available in Black from our Webstore!

ODYSSEY L STAND M

Odyssey builds an entire series of “L Stands,” as well as an enormous roster of cases, stand, gig bags and other accessories for all types of music and pro audio gear. Most of it’s L Stands are fixed in their size and angle, but the L Stand M (M for “mobile”) collapses for portability and includes some angle adjustment. Through the use of tightening knobs, you get 2.5 inches of height adjustment with the L Stand M; the minimum set-up height is 12 inches, while the maximum is 14.5 inches.

Two sets of tightening knobs also let you fold and unfold the L Stand M into its working position. This knob system is somewhat laborious, making the set-up and take-down times the longest of the group. Also, I could not get the knobs tight enough to support a 6.6-pound, 17-inch MacBook Pro. No matter how tight I made the knobs, the top of the stand  would bend under the weight of the 17-inch MacBook Pro, although it did work with lighter laptops and controllers.

If you want to mount the L Stand M to a table, you can remove the bottom base of the stand and use the two included C-clamps to mount the stand. That’s a nice option that makes set-up time longer, but gives you a lot of stability.

Because of its weight and set-up time, the L Stand M is not the best choice here for a mobile stand, but a good option for installs, especially using the C-clamps. Odyssey also makes a non-collapsable L Stand for the same price, which includes C-clamps and would be a good option for installs as well.

Weight: 5lbs. 11 oz. with C-clamps, 4lbs., 7oz. without C-clamps

Pros: Height- and angle-adjustable. Includes C-clamps for fixing to a table or case. Lowest street price.

Cons: Heavy. Not as sturdy as the others. Takes the longest to set up.

Price: $99.99 / $69.99 street

STANTON UBERSTAND

The Uberstand from Stanton is all about simplicity. It is the lightest stand here by a few ounces, and it’s the quickest to set up, because you just unfold it and go. There are no options for height or angle adjustability. Stanton includes some zip ties and recommends that you zip-tie the base to the column of the Uberstand to make sure it doesn’t tip over during use. There are also two Velcro stickers so that you can Velcro your laptop to the top of the stand. Those are both sensible precautions, but I felt comfortable using the Uberstand without either of them.

Made from aircraft-grade aluminum and stainless steel, the Uberstand definitely feels solidly constructed, but when compared to the Crane Stand, it feels a bit too wobbly for button-mashing on a controller. For laptop use it is fine. The Uberstand includes a position-adjustable shelf that is well-suited for holding a portable external hard drive or an audio interface such as the Echo AudioFire 2 or Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ or Audio 4 DJ.

Weight: 2 lb. 12 oz.

Pros: Light, but still robust. Fast set-up. Good value.

Cons: Not height- or angle-adjustable. A bit too wobbly to recommend for controllers.

Price: $100 / $79 street

CONCLUSION

Here’s how the stands fared in our aforementioned criteria.

Weight: At 2 lbs., 12 oz., the Uberstand is 4 oz. lighter than the Crane Stand.

Adjustability: While the L Stand M has the most straight-forward height adjustability, the Crane Stand is by far the most adjustable, with infinite potential angles and some limited height adjustability.

Set-up: The Uberstand takes the least time to set up and take down, while the L Stand M takes the longest.

Stability: Without a doubt, the Crane Stand is the sturdiest and most stable. Additionally, they are now selling a sub tray that will hold your sound cards.

In the end, we know that each of these stands could fit the needs of different people, but our top recommendation goes to the Crane Stand. Its combination of strength, durability, adjustability and portability make it worth the extra cash it costs. This new product has only been available in the US for the past 3 months, but we liked the stand so much, that we are now selling it in the webstore, so our international readers can also have access to a great product. In addition to a height-adjustable Crane Stand, Crane Hardware is working on an anodized unit, which will have a slicker look and even greater durability.

“However, we feel it is worth the investment to serious DJs.”

its more saying its price is more justifiable if your a serious DJ. Not saying this will make you a serious dj. But more of they probably think that a hobbiest/casual dj is better off saving money on a stand and use it somewhere else. Basically its expensive, but built well, which will be handy for someone giging with it.

  • jd

are any of these stands capable of supporting a large controller like the pioneer ddj-sx or numark ns6? if not is there another portable stand that is upto the job?

  • Ian Page-Echols

I saw a dj dump his laptop on the ground using an Uberstand without the zip ties. If you don’t use the zip ties and velcro with a similar stand, consider that your goal.

Also, it was semi ironic, as the reason the laptop got flipped was that the dj was throwing hands up in a “yay” type of motion, which became non-yay, though the laptop ended up being fine for the rest of the show at least. Keep arm pumping away from laptops and other expensive equipment.

They overlooked the lock in the L-stand because they are trying to sell you on the Crane. You can tell because the dude goes on and on about ‘really really well done .. so well done.. its hand crafted .. ergonomic .. this thing is made out of baby seals and tiger wangs” etc. He’s such a bad salesperson. He did a sales video for the S4 bag and while looking over the *plastic* buckle that is on every tourists fanny pack and costs 10 cents, said something like “check out this super durable super safe fastener — it will really really hold your bag shut”.

Another thing that you will need as DJ equipment is a DJ laptop stand. There are many options in the stand itself. The designs are very innovative and the controls have to be very user friendly when you choose them as the laptop is mostly the heart of all DJ equipment. This equipment is to be chosen very carefully as they are available in a number of models. It is always better if you choose a light weight one as this will make it easy for you to carry it around. It is available in most of the leading stores which deals with computers and its related accessories.

  • Qdogss14

I don’t think it is a good idea. It needs to be more secure with velcro something so your laptop wouldn’t fall off. http://www.go-djs.com

With a little trial and error I copied the design of the crane stand using only my friends welding machine and some parts from mcmaster carr. The prototype cost me about 20 bucks but only because I made a mistake. I’m going to make 4 more at about 12 bucks a pop. and hey… I learned to weld too! neat. Mine came out to 3.5 lbs and feels very sturdy. I can deal with the extra .5 for $130 in savings!

It looks like this stand extends its width aswell as its height
I have an 18.4″ widescreen laptop..Most stands are made for 17″ max..Does anyone know the specs on how wide this stand extends?

Also..Have any of you guys checked out the Lapdawg x4? Its very strong and sturdy, holds up to 25lbs,multi-purpose and multi-functional transformable ergonomic table tray..360° rotating legs with push button auto-locking joints.,so there are many adjustable positions, angles, and heights..Space saving design, folds flat for easy storage and set up..Its made from high quality annodized aluminum, weighs 6lbs.Its absolutely amazing. A bit pricey but worth every penny..I found some well known websites that sell it for a bit less..You definately have to check it out for yourself..
Oh,they also have a stand called ‘The Pug’ which looks pretty kool aswell..

I have a 17′ Toshiba Satelite and dj out quit frequently but am very skeptical about buying any of these LAPTOP Stands. I have many friends that have the Uber but have also sen them tip over. I don’t honestly think any Stand mfgr thought about 17″ laptops for DJs. Although it looks like this huge thing off to the side when I play out but is has served me well especially with the use of serato. I have a gig this coming weekend and would like to purchase something that will be sturdy. Fortunately I don’t have an external hd to worry about. Any ideas? I saw the Magma 2.1 but don’t think its in the US yet. Feeback would be greawt, THANKs

agrre with sould on the L stand which is very disappointing.I ve been using it for the last six months and despite the attractive cost, it s a bit of rip off. The parts are heavy and not very solid and after several usages, the steal bars are not correctly fitting in.
excellent article nevertheless and very useful for my next investment.

in one the bottom piece is facing backwards, opposite of the direction of the laptop. in the other it’s facing in the same direction of the laptop.

you can use it either way. in the forward [taller] way the foot will fit under any mixer or TT. the other ‘Z’ position offers even more flexibillity. Check out the demo at http://www.thecranestand.com/pages/gallery.html

yes I have the uberstand, noticed that in the video ian did not use the strap to secure the unit. love it as it is light and can easely be setup and moved… but with a 17″ sony laptop the unit has bent slightly over a year of use. I also had to mod the unit with rubber feet on the top of the unit to make sure the unit does not slip off the top… found the tubular design good for cable routing…

it is posible to secure audio card and laptop power supply to the central shelf. with a cable tie or a Velcro strap

  • sigil

i did my own search on stands and i found STANTON UBERSTAND very useful for me, it held my laptop well almost at eye level (depends where your placing on) and plus i like the position-adjustable shelf because it gave me a place for my audio card.
but the CRANE STAND looks awesome too

    I’m not gonna lie.

I wanted a really sturdy table for my turntables and other equipment so I bought a solid oak door from a thrift shop, threw down some cinder blocks and now I have this immovable table haha.

It was only about 30 dollars in investment, it doesn’t look all that great but you can’t budge it and there’s no vibrations from the speakers – no skipping!

  • Bis

I will have to say that the L-stand has served my purposes better. And I have to disagree with the review in that it DOES hold a lot of weight! The L-stand can hold a ton of weight, specially if you use the locking notches that make the stand sit at a flat angle (like the uberstand). Without using the “locking notches” I can still hold a HUGE Alienware Area-51 M7700 (probably the largest laptop ever made, lol) and now my 17″ Dell Precision M6300. I am sure I could put on it my MIDI keyboard and I would not have a problem as long as I keep it locked.

All in all the L-stand is the most versatile, and best value of the 3 IMO.

  • Pieter

The all best laptopstand for home use still is nothing less than the tv stand that hangs on the wall, of ikea, you can just out ur laptop up there, if u have a wall in front of course, and dont lose any space, but its not something to take on a gig

  • Golden Ears

I am not sure the crane stand would be as laterally stable as the Uberstand. A velcro tie can also substitute for the zip tie. I was also thinking of using a mini version of a snowboard binding ratchet strap for mine. I was thinking that hte 4 points of contact might make it more stable than the cranes 3 points of contact- though in the case of an unlevel surface.. the crane might win out.

I bought the Uberstand… I think it looks reasonably nice- though they could have added some curves or color to it.

I started anodizing them for Dj’s around me- you can have any color and they also do “Splash anodizing” but what is really cool is that they are the only people that can do type 3 hard anodizing (military spec) in colors other than Drab olive green.

I suppose I could also do the Crane stands.

I almost bought http://powerstand.se/page0/page0.html but not being able to have a hard drive or sound car underneath made the Uberstand win out.

The above looks like the Odyssey stand.

  • DJ Resistor

I can also attest that the Uberstand does not inspire the most confidence regarding tipping or unfolding. I can’t believe that they could not design some sort of aluminum locking lever for the main joints of the stand – it’d be the hands-down portable choice if the top and bottom hinges locked in their working positions. I use it underneath my mixer and have never had my laptop fall off, but the 90-degree angles, zip tie requirement and overall wobbliness knock it down to three stars.

I use a Rain Designs mStand on my desk, and it’s got the perfect amount of space underneath to tuck an audio interface, while bringing the front of the laptop just high enough to clear a VCI (or other controller). Totally useless with a mixer or turntable, though.

“If It bleeds, we can kill it.” I’m with you on that one.

I actually use the Griffin Elevator (http://www.griffintechnology.com/images/assets/headers/0000/0374/elevator_1.jpg) It’s very sturdy, easy to break down, and while its not height adjustable, its just high enough so I can fit my audio interface under my computer. This keeps most of my cables running to and from one area of my setup. From there its a matter of finding some place left to put my VCI. I usually don’t put my controller on a stand if I’m in a booth because they usually keep the decks at a good height in there already.

You’re giving too many props to the Uberstand. You should have given a BIG ‘Con’ to the fact that a ZIP tie is needed to make that bad design stable. With a laptop resting on it, one knudge is the opposite direction (w/o a zip tie) and your $1500+ laptop, gig and entire digital music collection is on the floor. The Uberstand is an accident waiting to happen. Crane #1, L-Stand(M) #2 and Uberstand last.

This is what I have. It’s not height adjustable, but it’s the most portable stand I’ve ever seen.

and by the way, i have the lstand-m and this wasn’t a fair review simply because in the video when he puts that controller on top of it and shows it bending, he didn’t have it locked. if you push down on that top part it locks, if you pull it up, it’s not locked (you can tighten the screws on the sides, but that’s not locking it).

right before that he pulled up on it and i could tell it was definitely unlocked when he did that. had he pushed it back down on top after making his height adjustments, that controller would not have bent it like that.

  • proto j

i’m confused about the crane from those pix…

in one the bottom piece is facing backwards, opposite of the direction of the laptop. in the other it’s facing in the same direction of the laptop.

how high that piece sits up would prevent me from putting it under my mixer…

i too prefer to have it off to the side instead of right in front of me, but sometimes it’s not an option because i put my tables and mixer on top of my flight cases when doing mobile gigs, and the flight case isn’t big enough to support the laptop stand and the turntable…

The LStandM does have a tendency to fold down like that, however… there are these sort of “keyhole” type of slots on both pivot points, which if you slide the stand into them it works quite well. I haven’t used either other stand, but I find the LStandM to be quite sturdy, especially when clamped down (I actually clamp it and use the base, which results in it being very stable). I also like that I was able to buy the shelf from them to hold my soundcard. The foam pads are a nice touch as well as they protect my laptop from scratches and hold it nicely in place with friction.

The LStandM is the most versatile of the three I’d say, and given that it folds flat it’s really not as bad for travel as you might think. I’m happy with my choice.

  • B33SON

I use the Uberstand. It’s definitely great for a laptop.

My CON: Need to secure it with a zip tie. I already lost the removable one that was included. Blah!

  • Lance Blaise

The Odessy Stand is a rip off.. its just cheap sheet metal, here is the same exact thing for under $30. I have one, its ok, I don’t recomend it for a traveling stand, but its great for home/stationary use. It just doesn’t doesn’t breakdown flat, but i guess it could make a good mobile stand, I used to travel with it when i first started DJing with a computer. I now put into my rider that there is a laptop stand and just use what teh venue or promoter provides…. here is the stand i have in my home set up! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0028FPYMY/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_3?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0013GCE2C&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=08209TYJVCGHB44DB59S

i work @ guitar center and I tried all these stands and ended up buying the DR Pro stand. Way cheaper and easier to setup. It doesn’t seem like many of these companies actually did any research into what djs really need.

Why don’t some superstar DJs use laptop stands?

Consider that up to $150 can be saved to purchase lighting, business cards, software, music – or even a midi controller that will allow you to not even need your keyboard close to you/eliminate the need for a laptop stand (so the audience can see you).

eg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHNyp5Wo6wk [m audio trigger finger hotcue demo w serato]

I feel some DJs (including myself) buy equipment just to collect it all. I think it’s important though to consider your DJ career as a business and to spend/invest money wisely to get yourself to the next level.

I’m not against laptop stands as it did save my laptop + soundcard from a completely beer drenched table but there are options to consider.

    Just a thought.

Thanks to Ean again for yet another fantastic article. Love this site.
I totally agree. It just makes you look like a douche & cuts u from the audience

Case in point: diplo with a stand – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwPwkib_7u0&feature=related

I just have a recycled plexi stand. It’s light, sturdy & low. I can put my soundcard under it. Protects my lappy from idiot beer & costs $0.

I love it! very easy to care, don’t take too much space in bag, nice visual and you can use with either with some controllers.

  • Clarkitect

The Odyssey L-stand is seriously garbage. It get’s all bent out of shape and it is wobbly as hell. I have a couple friends who have used it for 1 year and it’s already ready for the trash. If you switch between table to coffin case the screws have to be re-set with a screw driver and these screws strip very quickly too. Plastic hand knobs are garbage too.

There you go….don’t buy garbage 🙂
The Uberstand includes a position-adjustable shelf that is well-suited for holding a portable external hard drive or an audio interface such as the Echo AudioFire 2 or Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ or Audio 4 DJ.
In fact, the A8DJ fits on the shelf perfectly as well, the shape is a near exact match, though it ends up “sideways” so to speak (if you put one on the shelf, you’ll know what I mean).

I have 2 Uberstands and I like them a lot, keep my laptop and a Remote SL 25 up there with no problem, though I have wanted to get a custom piece of sheet metal cut to lay across the top of them, which I think will give the 2 stands more stability by “connecting” them together.

  • djerikt

+1 for the http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/elevator , its a great stand. I mostly need a laptop stand for the sheer vibration factor of the bass. If I were to put my laptop on the countertop, the bass would probably skip the harddrive to hell. The ‘Elevator’ cushions a lot of that shock.

  • Roberto

Great discussion and an excellent topic to review. I have not yet purchased a laptop stand, tested a couple that I did not like and kept on using a milk cart as well.
However, had a couple of close calls that have prompted me to reconsider.
I guess it depends on the DJ’s style, I have been to some shows where people don’t see to mind the DJ or beat selector standing directly in front of their laptop. I personally, keep mine to the far right side of me to maintain open face contact with the crowd. In some respects, it can almost be compared to when vinyl DJs turn their back to the crowd and start diggin’t the crates.

  • duerr

    i want that setup!

  • Dave Richards

Not that I would want to haul them around, but I’m still very much attached to my homemade PVC pipe stands. I’ve got a small one for my laptop and another one that angles my Stealth Control at 45 degrees. VERY nice and user friendly if you ask me.

  • GianPaJ

    just my 2 cents:
i’ve got the Magma Laptop Stand 2.0 (http://www.magma-bags.de/produkte/laptop-stand-2-0-e.php3) which is very similar to the ODYSSEY L STAND M.

It’s not super stable and not very good for mobile Djs. But if you tight the knobs firmly enough it won’t move a lot. From what I can see from the video. I wouldn’t change mine to any of those. If i could afford it I might buy a Roadready LAPT1 Laptop Stand (http://store.roadreadycases.com/dyn_prod.php?p=RRFSSS&k=224582)

I think that having a laptop between u and the crowd it really changes the way u interact with the crowd (and vice versa) and if can easy adjustable that would be great.

Of course it depends what kind of dj u are, event it is and the height of the table it self.

    Peace,

    Gian

I have both the L stand and the Crane stand, and I love my Crane!! Yes, it was a little more expensive compared to the rest, but it’s worth every penny. The L stand is so flimsy and bulky, i don’t even use it.. Crane FTW!!!

  • soulD

I have both the original Odyssey L-Stand, and the Stanton Uberstand. I originally used to use the Odyssey, but it takes forever to set up , doesn’t break down nicely (too many parts), and I hated having to “fine tune” it to make sure that it stands level while keeping my MacBook Pro level. Started using the Uberstand, and that’s all she wrote. It’s quick to setup, and takes up very little space when collapsed (protip: ditch the sleeve it comes with for a sleeve intended for a 12″ PowerBook). I use a reusable heavy-duty Velcro tie (used for securing cables) in lieu of the reusable zip-ties that it came packaged with, and it’s perfectly stable for me. The lack of height adjustable is fine, as it puts the laptop where I need it, but of course, YMMV.

    RE: http://www.thomann.de/de/millenium_laptopstand.htm

had this one but decided to send it back. it’s height-adjustableand in general an okay stand but I couldn’t slide it under my controller or a turntable. It’s pretty heavy, too, and you’ll have to reassemble it every time you travel. but then again it’s only 20 bucks. decide for yourself

I have the ODYSSEY L STAND M and its awful! Flimsy and over priced. I only just trust it to hold my laptop, and I have seen people put CDJ’s on these things!

If you don’t need too much elevation, I would recommend the Griffin Elevator. Costs around $30 and is the most widely used and trusted laptop stand I’ve come across.

IMHO, all the stand you need is right here for 40 USD: http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/elevator

Simple, sturdy, breaks down easy for carrying, and a hell of a lot lighter than any of these. It doesn’t lift your laptop up a whole lot but you can put something underneath the stand if you really need to.
