• Novation Dicer Revealed - DJ TechTools

[…] Novation announced the ‘Dicer’ controller that we showed in this cryptic video last Friday. Dicer is a pair of button controllers that fit snugly onto a pair of Turntables providing DVS […]

• djNature

imho… brilliant… to be able to scroll your library with this little thing and quick access to cue points, loops, etc… i’m sold! As soon as they get to Guitar Center in Va Beach, I’ll be sure to get mines.

• n4Sphere

so finally its awake: the dicer

i really like the price €99 and hope ean shows us his review of the dicer as soon as possible

I’ll be buyig these as soon as they’re available in the UK.

???
I knew it!!! but still digging the dj putty.

• vibration

i know they’d work great with the cd’s, my question is vibration when using it with the 1200’s???

love the idea.

any clue on cost

i’d buy a pair for $50-70

i think they will go over very well. i like the idea much better than the NI product

• Vlad Luzin

“Dicer was designed by Novation in collaboration with Ean Golden – DJ and curator of DJ Tech Tools.”

Ean you are genius!

• Vlad Luzin

Cool thing!

• kayf

So its DICER

Wind up. The clocks going UP over at Novation!

there’s some teaser shots on novation’s facebook page.

• Karlos Santos

18 hours to go here on GMT.
Novation is a UK based company.
Some pics on Facebook and one looks like its being
used on a Pioneer CDJ.

• Dj Phat B

3,2,1 and nothing changed on the novation site

• Mudo

Make ITCH any controller affordable must be really easy… but for that first crack the soundcard and make this effort significant.

Just my2cents.

• Jake

I saw Travis & A-TRAK at their shows at The Roxy in Hollywood. I’m pretty sure A-TRAK was using something very similar to that.
…Though, isn’ it essentially the same thing to “jump to” cue points in Traktor?

• Grizu

I’ve been talking to the Serato guys a few times, that I want a sampler in ITCH plus some Midi at least for the sampler and cuepoints. And they still keep saying no 🙁
So I’d really love to see if Phil found a workaround for cuepoints, loops and stuff using an extra controller. Would be super dope to have VCI-300 for scratching, VFX-1 for effects and maybe my Maschine for cuepoints. Maybe he cracked the software or knows how to grab the midisignals of ITCH into another software/translator.
Sometimes these hackers and softwarenerds are able to create some unbeleavable things.
So I’m still waiting for a response, Phil.

• Anonymous

Yeah, Grizu, methinks Phil is full of ishhhh

• Anonymous

Anyone see this yet? It looks awfully similar, but I don’t think it’s the same thing…

• Grizu

@Phil: Using another miditool with ITCH? As far as I know, that’s not possible. It only supports dedicated products. So post a video to proof that please and let us all know how that’s possible. I’d love to trigger cuepoints with an extra controller.

For my main setup (DVS + turntables) these little Novation babies really look like winners, but depends on the price and availability.

• DJ Sean P

you better be able to daisy chain two of these together (one for each table) cause my MacBook Pro only has 2 usb ports.

• midifidler

Using the pitch dots of the platter would only give you platter angular velocity/acceleration, not much use for replicating vinyl control

• jimbrowski

my guess is that it has some sort of optical system that uses the dots on the side of the platter to control the record in traktor… probably wrong though 🙂

How can you possibly use another MIDI controller with Itch? They state it’s not possible.. really want to know as I have a Nocturn as well.

• nem0nic

Your Blade Runner comment has not gone unnoticed…

• jselma

Somebody brings an Esper Photo Analysis machine, we need to get a better focus. Thanks.

• Karlos Santos

USB Hub for 2 of them if your on Mac . The other deck in the video has one of the controllers so they must be single deck control only???

• Mudo

LoveRocket +1

• LoveRocket

“”” This thing will probably make the needle skip if you are hitting the buttons like he does. There is conviniently no needle on the record.

If the needle is not on the record- how did he scratch at the end? Magic Serato records? “”””

WTF? The needle is right there the whole time. It’s bright neon yellow (Ortofon) on an Ortofon DJ (Blue) cartridge.

and it continues… lame.

• Alex

At 10 secons in he looks like hes stroking the farside of the controler. Possible touch fader? (I’ve forgoten to correct name for them, you get them on electribes etc.).

• Patch

This is nothing that can’t be done already with any pad/key controller and Bomes. I’ve been doing exactly what he’s doing in the video, using a DR-202 (nice pads)and DJ Decks (with a custom DJ Patch/Serato skin 😉 ) mounted behind and above my mixer.

The size and shape of the controller IS awesome, though. And if it’s not bound to Serato software (and they’d be MAD to do that) I’ll be buying TWO without a second thought.

It IS gonna change the game. Scratchers and jugglers are just jumping onto controllerism – this is gonna be HUGE.

• jorge muniz

is this a djtt product?! spill the beans midifidler =D

Or maybe its a way to link two of them together so that way you don’t up two USB ports. Also if they made the cable removable it would mean you could use one or two depending on the situation.

• JesC

“The Game Changer”? maybe to play pong…Looks nice, but I would rather use the USB for something else…like….the MF?

• djerikt

it just seems like buttons that are small and on the corner of your turntable. Larger buttons next to your turntable are already available. I hope this does more than that.

• Karlos Santos

Wont fit on the Vestax PDX-3000 at all. Wont fit on any Numark either.
Looks like it could fit on the Stanton ST and the T62 though.

• Priscilla

maybe it slides into the slot where the 45 adapter goes
???

• Karlos Santos

It looks like the unit is on rubber feet or maybe moulded foam. You can see it move up and down and the deck remains still.

This would help dampen the pressure applied but crucially stop any sound travelling from the tapping action into the tonearm. As we all know if you tap on a turntable an it can make a racket.

• Ean Golden
Dreamt of something almost exactly this (MIDI controller seated in the 45 adapter-holder on a 1200) a year or two ago and thought i was a genius, but then was reminded: Banging fingers on turntables makes needles skip. :(
Normally you would think so, but Serato is tracking the needle during the full video and the neither the track nor the needle ever budge while he is banging on the buttons. The techniques corner is very well insulated against force due to the suspended feet.

Phil.
How exactly were you doing this? I’m dying to have the ability to trigger cue points and set loops in Itch using the midifighter. Can you elaborate?

• kia

i´m working on pretty the same since a few days.. i got a faderfox dx2, and i like it very much because it´s small, but in some situations there is no space for it.

the idea of using the space on a mk2 is the best solution for a mididevice because its the only space thats really aviable everywhere in the clubs!
my first idea was to build something like a stick, that find its place in between the mixer-eq,s.. but there´s the problem that the mixers are to different, and that´s really not much space:)

i´m a turntable-dj, my needs are maybe different from controller-dj´s, but what i need is something to control the layout and loading, setting a loop, set and delete two cue points and jumping forward and backward if a track is really short or long.. i´ll never need this with two decks one time, so i´ll make a deck a- and a deck b- mode.

since i´m often playing on a xone92, i miss the pioneer-fx a little bit, so it would be great to use the traktor-fx-engine.. and control it with the same controller.

this is what i´m planning..

for my tt-mounted-controller i want to use a usb-u-hid-controller..

i want one general switch for switching in three modes. deck a, deck b and fx-mode.

one shift-knob.

one endless-poti for scrolling the library and swithing the layout (with shift-knob) in deck mode.

one row of four knobs wich are controlling the four fx-knobs (with shif-knob) and when hold down controlling the fx-potis via the endless-controller. (in the fx mode)
in the deck mode: button 1 – cue2 (shift: delete cue2), button 2 – cue3 (shift: delete cue3), button 3 – activate fx slot 2 (shift: move in track left), button 4 – loop (shift: move in track right).

finally there are two more buttons.. load a and load b – in deck mode (will be the same in deck mode a and b).
in fx mode these buttons are acting like two more shift-buttons for the row of four buttons, i got some ideas for it, but i´m not really shure, maybe it controlls the fx-activator and something like dublicate deck a to b.. i´ll see:)

if somebody understands what i mean (it´s a bit difficult for me to write in english).. and interested in it, or got some good ideas for the basic-needs of a dj for the controller.. please let me know:)

• Rob Ticho

I’m not sure I get the importance of the video.

My buddy was doing the same exact thing last night with turntables, serato and the Akai LPD8. The only difference was the LPD8 was next to the turntable instead of on it.

• slangemenneske
Banging fingers on turntables makes needles skip. :(
This.

• sgb

Its a MIDI controller that has 5 primary buttons with three different smaller buttons. The three smaller buttons appear to place the primary buttons in three modes in Scratch Love: cue (definitely), loop roll (definitely), and looping (probably, not demonstrated). Do I win a prize?

• Mudo

@Karlos

Serato is following the NI way and good ideas are ever welcome but rare times are good ideas from Serato or Novation. They prefer “rip” from!

XD

I’m just kidding, not take in consideration.

😉

• DJ Moonie

An interesting idea, but nothing new being added to the arena. Its looks like a pad controller, just shaped to fit a space.

Novation.

• Double DutchDj

@Dj HearSay, unlike the dj in the vid Craze can actually scratch and the decks on display are the limited edition gold platted 1200’s not the gold covered decks you can only get by winning the dmc solo finals.

• Anonymous

Judging by Novation’s site it looks temptingly like it is this…
could it be the perfect product for bridge?

• Dj HearSay

What is Craze using?! i’ll wait for the full blown routine video to drop… can’t fool me i know those gold decks from a mile away

• korona

I don’t quite understand what’s so special about this?

• Double DutchDj

Cool idea from the compact point of view! ever since I first started digital dj’n I’ve always had nano pads sitting in front of each deck. For scratching it’s so good to have all the hot cue’s plus some other controls just below the platter. Problem when playing out, it’s not always pos to fit anything in front of the decks, hence I also take a piece of ply wood that the front legs of the decks hold in to place. It’s cool this little controller solves the space issue, but I couldn’t see my self buying in to it as the controls seem to small for rapid turntable to hotcue use, tho saying that, having more controls without taking up any more space is very appealing, hmmmmmm very cool idea, would like some more info!
