A New Traktor Controller is Coming

NI just released a teaser video featuring Dubfire rocking Space, Ibiza with an un-identified Traktor controller and software. Learn what we know about this new release along with some high resolution screen grabs after the jump!

WHAT DO WE KNOW?

As usual, the staff at TechTools has some inside info that we can’t yet share with you- Dammit! Contractual obligations will allow us to share the following tidbit of info:  Ean Golden was directly involved with the concept and design of the controller and software.

A CLOSER LOOK

Pausing a 30 second video can be a pain in the butt so we grabbed and cleaned up a few of the best shots so you can get a better look at the controller.

WHAT DO WE SUSPECT

Should a DJ wish to speculate, one could deduce the following from the screen shots above:

• There is a new software on the way with 4 loop players/samplers
• This will be a 2 deck/4 channel mixing console much like the new Xone DX
• It  has a built in sound card
• The outer decks are switchable to control 4 virtual decks.
• Lots of good LED feedback
• What looks like 4 cue pads per deck
• NI is calling it a Traktor System (Hardware and Software combo)
• Rumors are flying that the software is called the s4

That’s pretty much it- tell us what you think in the comments!

*Update regarding the VCI-100SE*

Several people have asked about how this will affect the future of the VCI-100SE.  Our flagship controller has managed to last for several years now because it has proven to be a reliable, fun and well balanced solution. We will absolutely continue to sell, support and integrate the controller with future versions of Traktor. For DJs looking for a portable controller at a lower price- we think the SE will still be a great product and the only controller with our one of a kind mappings.

SIGN UP LIST TO PURCHASE

Since Ean helped design the new Traktor controller, DJ TechTools will be selling it with some special perks exclusively for our customers. Add your name to the list bellow and get the first chance to buy the controller. Exact price and release date are not yet public.

……….. Ok, i’ve been reading all the comments on here over the past week or so . There are some of you who cannot wait to get your hands on this and equally there are some who will not entertain it ……. I personally am looking forward to this being released… i started playing 22 years ago at those naughty illegal raves, i have always owned a pair of 1210’s and lugged around boxes and bags of vinyl , as you know 2 boxes of records can be extremely heavy and a right old pain in the arse humping them on and off planes and waiting around in airports for the boxes to come through on the luggage belt (sometimes not always in tact , sometimes not appearing at all) !!….. and not forgetting the cost for the extra weight !!

Now then …. 12 months ago a friend introduced me to traktor . I loved it as soon as i played on it ….. it opened a load more opportunities for me technically …. since that time i have purchased a xone dx and i will surely be acquiring one of these babies .

I’ve converted a shit load of my vinyl to 320 mp3 as well as buying brand new stuff which by the way is 7 times as cheap as vinyl and a hell of a lot lighter to carry ( how heavy is a macbook ) !! … i take my xone & mac in 1 bag over my shoulder and it stays with me on a plane and at the airport !!

I’m not preaching nor attempting to convert anyone , i’m merely explaining what traktor and controllers have done for me 🙂

Now , back to what i came on here in the first place for ….

Dear Native Instruments,
Would you kindly fucking hurry up an release this
as i’m an extremely impatient bastard and i really
really want a go on this . Thankyou . x

@CTRLD: sorry, but if you say “(I’m sure NI will deliver quality but there’s no way this thing can compete with the quality and durability of, say, an ecler evo5)”

I think then you never touched a X1 controller, because the wobbliness of a Ecler EVO Series mixer (the knobs are horribly unstable) then you might want to check out something more sturdy.

Don’t mean that you don’t know your stuff, just merely pointing out that if this controller will be anything like the quality of the X1 then it will be very solid.

p.s. I started out on Eclers nearly 15 years ago but lost the interest in the brand with their EVO Series.

Afraid not …. they’re exactly the same as the xone dx .

• ctrld

looks like it’s not interesting at all for people who have a timecode-based setup and a decent mixer (I’m sure NI will deliver quality but there’s no way this thing can compete with the quality and durability of, say, an ecler evo5). a modular, controller-only version would be nice for those among us who still prefer a moving 12″ platter to a stationary 5″ plastic jog and already have an audio interface. think traktor kontrol x2 or something. but I’m sure it will be a fun thing for people who don’t care about vinyl.

for now, I’m only looking at the software in anticipation.

• Anonymous

………. i’ve heard this from an extremely reliable source , the unit is constructed by the same company who builds the x1 & maschine …….. the price for this package will be £650-£700…
………… and finally , the release date is the first half of November …….. shhhhh , you aint seen me,right 😉

4 Cue Pads Per Deck – no good need 8
There is a new software on the way with 4 loop players/samplers- Why? Traktor is for DJing not producing….I dont understand this, we have 4 decks.

Lots of good LED feedback – I like this, Ive been waiting for this, hopefully we can color corodinate Cues, Grids, Loops, Etc…

NI is calling it a Traktor System (Hardware and Software combo)
Rumors are flying that the software is called the s4

Im not interested….not looking to make a major change right now, this wont work.

There are loads of forum types here who post without a clue. If you care to do any research you will know dubfire traditionally uses maschine in his set that is why you see the audio interface.

Coloured waveforms, whats the benefit, I don’t see any, I own both traktor and serato and it don’t make a difference.

Looks like a solid all in one controller to me for stand alone setup, integrating into a club enviroment may be difficult but not impossible

• Sjaak

Dear God, please let the jogs be touch-sensitive!

• jettyson

I have Xone 4D… the only thing I don’t like about that is the ‘jog wheel’ does not have the right amount of resistance to use like a CDJ for controlling.

Would one sell their Xone 4D for one of these?

I am excited about the new software… hope you can still purchase that separately!

• born

for be defenitive in my opinion MUST have:

1) Booth output

2) Possibility to use in External mode (as xone 4D)..and possibility to connect external device and use as normal mixer

3) Warp in Traktor

4) Dedicated Bags…maybe 🙂

…unfurtunatly I have a lot of doubts about my points.

• DJ Twono

I am very happy and excited that NI is FINALLY adding the sampler into Traktor!! I always loved Traktor more than any other software but envied others like Serato and VDJ for having the ability to play samples! Now Traktor is ULTIMATE!!!! CANT WAIT!!

still wanna see a side by side waveform layout like serato that’s the only thing that erks me out about traktor from time to time

• Matrix

I guess one of the MAIN problems of this controller is that it will looks flimsy. That is exactly what I encountered before actually touching the X1: it looks fragile but its rock solid, I would even go so far and say that its the best build plastic based controller out there, heck, even the VCI-100 appears flimsier to my feel than the X1, even though it is based heavily on metal components.

Anyways, if the quality of this controller is anywhere near the build quality of the X1 (which we will discover after the very first unboxing) then I will immediately buy one, no questions asked.

• dj testcell

I hope this controller will be fordable but what ever tengo balas to buy go traktor beat the xone dx controller

• JunaSOLO

Although I have completely abandoned Traktor in the pursuit of Ms Pinky and Ableton with a DIY controller, this new Traktor software update really looks great. Not too excited about the controller. But I am excited that more controllers may come as a result of this effort. I would rather see a more battle style size of a controller that still had tons of knobs, geared towards vinyl control. I imagine this controller is the result of a collective conscious that is trying to find the average of desires in a controller. I mean that in a good way. I just have other things in mind, smaller, with more knobs and buttons, an XY pad, and possibly a small 8×8 button matrix.

After coming to realize that the APC40 was probably my worst purchase that I was totally excited about making, I will not dive into new controllers with such haste.

Whomever this “w” is, obviously knows little about turntables, art, and the history of it’s movement. It was just as much a struggle for musicians like drummers, and guitar players to realize turntables had become and instrument of art. That baton was handed to laptops. DUH. Now go back to your box of limitation, and leave us to innovate good times.

@elover
The translation is hilarious!! I loved how it changed “Pinchar” (mixing) for “prick”…. and most important, it changed “controlador” (controller) for “USB driver”…but you have the idea, this guy didn’t like the controller but he liked the interface.

Hi!!! This is a comment from the sound technician of Space (Ibiza) He worked the day of the demo of the NI hardware. From a Spanish Web Audio Forum http://www.hispasonic.com

Hello boys and girls, work space with sound, that day was two sets Dubfire, your own, with x1 and TS Pro and another set of NI with the new TS Dj Pro, the look of the software is brand new and the kids native did not want to tell me much, no release date or price, and were worried in case the software failed, the most striking memory for loops and changing colors of the interface.
As for the usb driver that I had in my hands, I saw the name of any site, personally I think that is too large and heavy (a contraption) and jogs as a 3D (I do not like) is a prototype and if not modified, size is almost the double of a vestax vci-100!
It can be useful if you want to forget about the mixer and want an all in one, to small local or want to start to prick a low budget for a good club for a good quality mixer is imprescinbible, like the pioneer djm 2000 ranging from vice or the classic 92.
My opinion is that they have evolved a bit over the software they already had and have taken this “bug” to cover with your brand that part of the controller market.
Greetings from IBZ

+1 , Please cut this up into smaller pieces like the NS7 / V7 , that would rule. I almost like the Stanton pieces, but the big ones are too expensive and the small cheap ones are clunky.

Other than that, I really excited for new software and hardware. Though it’s doubtful that I would ever purchase something so large. I’ve had trouble finding room in DJ booths for a Novation MKII zero or an Oxygen 8. My current set up of an X1, AUdio DJ2, and laptop on a stand works best because it takes up almost no room and I can mix whatever mixer is available there.

Innovators
Innovators are the first individuals to adopt an innovation. Innovators are willing to take risks, youngest in age, have the highest social class, have great financial lucidity, very social and have closest contact to scientific sources and interaction with other innovators. Risk tolerance has them adopting technologies which may ultimately fail. Financial resources help absorb these failures. (Rogers 1962 5th ed, p. 282)

That’s us 🙂

• Vinicius Hoffmann

Late Majority
Individuals in this category will adopt an innovation after the average member of the society. These individuals approach an innovation with a high degree of skepticism and after the majority of society has adopted the innovation. Late Majority are typically skeptical about an innovation, have below average social status, very little financial lucidity, in contact with others in late majority and early majority, very little opinion leadership.

Laggards
Individuals in this category are the last to adopt an innovation. Unlike some of the previous categories, individuals in this category show little to no opinion leadership. These individuals typically have an aversion to change-agents and tend to be advanced in age. Laggards typically tend to be focused on “traditions”, have lowest social status, lowest financial fluidity, oldest of all other adopters, in contact with only family and close friends, very little to no opinion leadership.

To each their own. I am still not a fan of pure controllerism. Not really a fan of CDJs either though. I guess I just prefer my 1200’s and my standard 2 channel battle style mixer. I’m not really going to knock DVS technology either because it’s come a long way since it was first released. Both Serato & Traktor are prime examples of where it SHOULD be at…and they still aren’t perfected yet. I do love advancements in turntable technology but I like when they actually involve real turntables.

• naked jake

don’t care about the hardware, very excited about the software though. if pioneer cdj’s can accurately detect the bpm of almost any track why can’t traktor? I find it only auto beatgrids well with house music, garage, drum n bass, hip hop, dubstep, all seem to confuse it. even house tune with off beat melodies confuse it.

I reckon if they’re trying to market this to professional touring/club djs, it doesn’t matter where the jog wheels are…the majority don’t do any scratching. Plus, Ean already mentioned he had personal input in the design and I even saw his reply to the position of the jog wheels. Personally, it’s a non-issue. I”m buying this baby!

• DJ Fitty

The controller looks like a beefed up xponent with same useless jogs for scratching!

• DJ Fitty
Jogwheels completely in the wrong position for scratching.
Nice to see a sampleplayer, still missing a waveform like in ITCH, Scratch Live and Torq. One day NI should learn, that not everyone of us is pushing the syncbutton and that there are still some Turntablists out there or Controllerists with a similar workstyle, e.g. using jogwheels for scratching.

For now the only plus ist the sampleplayer.
Controller completely failed, because of the inacceptable jogwheels.

If NI comes up with parallel waveforms oneday, then I might give ’em a chance again. But this software update and useless controller won’t make me switch from Torq and ITCH.
+1 not excited, jogs in the wrong place not meant for scratching, now if this is gonna work with the ns7 or vci-300 then I think I might try it/

• 1000 Cutts

I love my VCI-300 due to simple set up, decent soundcard, great jog wheels but after nearly two years the lack of 4 decks and no effects (apart from buying the vfx) leaves me a bit pmt…This could move me from a Serato whore to a Traktor bitch……

• Jack the Warrior

software myself less interested! The controller looks interesting. But the Jog Wheels should be down and the buttons directly over it horizontally. Only the Play and Cue button at left and right below the jog! As is the pitch fader rather above the right!

• DJ R3 Bonaire

@Gamma Ray

Thats the VMS4 from American Audio, which was rumoured to be coming with a “special version” of Trakor, the faceplate has mappings for Samples, suggesting this was they way things were going.

Unfortunately somewhere down the line, things didn’t work out between NI and ADJ (prolly due to licencing) and ADJ went with Virtual DJ – which still has “issues” with 4 deck, “natural vinyl drift” etc.

The VMS4 has been delayed so much, that it’s looking like these two controllers could be on the shelves at the same time and from the looks of it the NI unit is far superior.

Shame I pre-ordered my VMS4 🙁

One problem is still size : we want something big enough so we have enough space to operate between buttons (that’s what I love with a cdj setup) but still has to be portable.
So…
EAN, is there a chance native cuts this unit in pieces and makes a single player controler, with a bigger jogwheel?

That would be perfect for club djs : you use the club mixer and put your 2 traktor players over the cdj.
And at home you can use the cool native mixer. (pretty much like the numark ns7 and then the v7)

Even if it had to be one controller per deck!
Im not interested in this built in mixer thing I just want to use the club mixer.
But I want to have as much control over tracktor as I have over cds on a cdj.
Lets be honest the beat grid thing is ok but its not perfect no matter how much you adjust it and I still have to play all the older tracks that drift in timing on cds anyway if I want to mix then, which I do.
So what I would like is a controller like x1 with jog and pitch and no sub menues something like a smaller cdj one unit could control deck a and c the other deck b and d.yep you would need 2

For those confused..if you take a good look at the video, you’ll see another semi-closed laptop in front of the A8 soundcard….and there’s also another mixer( xone62) next to the NI traktor prototype so it’s just another dudes(hawtin’s) setup sitting there. And it’s been said over and over…yes..there is a sound card built in..NI confirms…

I spoke to an NI rep last week and told him how much I loved my xone 1d but wanted backlit buttons and a jogwheel which is why I didn’t want to buy the x1…he told me to wait till the fall and now I see this is most likely what I he was referring to.

I was really hoping for something smaller…to sit next to my mixer…that had the x1 controls AND a jogwheel…this is a bit overkill for me but great for people who are looking to upgrade to a single unit type system or are just starting out. I’ve heard rumours of prices ~500-1000 and considering it has a sound card, I’m willing to be it will most likely be > $500.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Good job on your contribution Ean. Keep up the good work, 2010 is turning out to be a stellar year for you first with the dicer and now this.

• Alkmst

My Bad, I meant Dubfire not Deepdish. I guess I just missed the Duos!

• Alkmst

I like how the top effects rack to be separate from the main console. My assumption is that this would be optional which would be smart play by NI for users that currently has the X1 units. This way it can be used in conjunction with the main console and perhaps bypass the whole deck switch feature (seen in one of the pics). Another smart play which I think the way NI is going with making hardware controllers is to make this same controller with no audio making it a compatible controller with other DJ apps, who knows maybe that is the prototype console Deepdish was using and that is why the Audiodj8 was present in his gig.

• dj kickz

Thanks for any info that your allowed to give
It’s not that I’m allowed or not allowed to give information it’s pure speculation. The private beta is ONLY available to SSL users. It usually takes quite some time for updates/bugfixes/enhancements to be ported into the lesser versions of any software provider’s offerings and let’s face it, from a commercial perspective it would be complete madness for Serator to provide the bridge functionality immediately in what essentially is a free platform for those who have purchased the hardware before fully reaping the rewards in the SSL arena. I would expect the first version to be released at this year’s Winter NAMM and then for Itch to follow suit in the New Year.

I wouldn’t expect this Traktor unit to be on the market until at least October 2010. If anyone’s pondering what to buy. Forget about it. There’s plenty out there to satisfy even the most control hungry monsters out there. To be honest, after having some time to reflect on the images posted, it kind of looks like a Hercules with a couple of Kontrol1’s stuck on it. The quality of the sound card in the Xone:DX is absolutely outstanding. Mappings for Traktor are already available. Itch is on the super highway and when the Bridge is ready get yourself an APC40, Xone:DX, Ableton Suite 8 and some Cerwin Vegas. Then you can stop talking about shit and rock the house!!!! I’m just missing the bridge in that scenario!!!

• word
Very nice piece of kit.

I’m currently running a Xone:DX with Itch 1.6 synched to Ableton Live with an APC40 and an MPK25. Once the bridge is finally available (and I understand that this will probably now be next year on the Itch platform, earlier on SSL) the loop will be closed and creative possibilities for live performance are endless.

Without the ableton integration traktor will be for people who like to play other peoples CD’s, which don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that, but Serato’s joint offering with Ableton really seals the deal for me and creates a live digital music performance powerhouse that will fit in carry-on luggage.
the questions are:

will it be
– easily portable,
– easy to handle,
– not just a grid to the dj to perform in,
– but a great opportunity to be more creative and do a better performance,
– and a soft-/hardware to reach new levels,
– and: well priced?

looks good on the first view, and after i tested the ni x1, i’m looking forward for new ni-products with well balanced interfaces and perfect to use programs, i’d like to test it right now.
at least we’ll see what it brings up to the djs, and if it’s the next dj-level with samples (which ich really hoped to come up in traktor) and… well, let’s see.

looking forward for the dj-tt-test.
thx guys

• Steve

Seeing how Ean was involved in the design phase, has to be a good product. The only question is price. Like to see all the crazy concotions DJTT works up with this. Probably meant for 1:1 but I’m sure had midi mappability.

• DJ R3 Bonaire

It looks ok on the vid but want to see it in the store. As many said the jog wheels could be bigger and in a different location. I am jalous at the VU meters and backlit knobs, compared to my VCI100SE. My idea is still to buy 2 Denon 3700’s and control TR with this and use my VCI in Juggle and Fader mode. Platter control is still the problem with the Denon and TR. I could use time code CD’s. Waiting for a price dump on the Denon’s….
TR update will i guess not be for free???And gives EAN some new mapping work…..

• Anonymous

Be honest ^^
We don’t know when this controller will be in store.

But, it seems to be the first dedicated controller wich integrate Traktor Fully and sure it will be optimised for it.

If you love Traktor, I think it’s a must have …

Everyone who got a VCI-100 SE try to find THE good other controller wich allow to fully control Traktor ; now you could have an all-in-one controller wich make the same perfectly (IMO), and no need an additional soundcard …

Xone DX for Itch, this one for Traktor XD

• Alex

Come on guys really?

I’d rather be dead than seen caught playing with that thing!! It looks like a prototype, fine, but it looks fisher-price nonetheless.

Admittedly I’m a die-hard physical control man but I do see the value in Traktor software – the sad thing is most noobs won’t use it to its full extent and simply press play whilst wearing their sunglasses and sporting a mullet.

• Dragonfyre

It’s quite comical to see these trollers post everytime a new controller gets announced, and they feel the urge to inject their fear of the change that the dj art is/has been taking. I’ve been djing for over 20 years and started on vinyl. It took a little getting used to, to use cds in my sets. If something is based on technology, things should eventually improve over time. I welcome new technology that improves on the current stuff. If you want to still dj using vinyl, go for it! Unfortunately, good luck in finding a lot of current music in that format. Shouting out your fear of change is like the old man shouting that anybody using synths is making fake music. Only ‘real’ music uses pianos!

• Lol4k

This controller comes just when I picked up a new VCI-100 SE …
I love the 4 channel mixer ^^ Maybe it’s time to sold it rapidly :p

@ Prof “I hate to be a nattering nabob of negativity but I have to ask… if the sample player has to take up a deck slot like it seems, and it only has four slots like it seems, isn’t this a step backwards from just using a specially prepared track with samples and cuepoints set up? ”

If you look closely each sample has its own play button. So you can have four loops going which would use only one deck.

• smiffy

This thing looks like it’s gonna be worth a serious look.
I’ve gone from decks to controllers to cdj’s and back to decks using both Traktor and Serato as well as Ableton and now the choice is getting tougher and more expensive. The Ableton/Serato Bridge looks so promising too to be able to gain proper control over cueing and tempo of clips. Arrrgh decisions… better start saving!

• Grizu

@Ean:
You know besides Turntables I’m also using a VCI-300, where Jogwheels are pretty close to the crossfader and your hands look and feel strange in the beginning.
So I fully agree with the distance, but distance to the side not to the front!
Jogwheels on this NI remind me of crazy setups in big discos/clubs, where you have a mixer on your desk and CD-player/turntables a million miles away behind the mixer on some crazy stands.
Handpositioning on this jogwheels just doesn’t seem to be right.
I know this controller will be dope and I also talked a lot to friends working with NI, but even they agree with the wrong jogwheel position for scratching, because it wasn’t in their mind.
I guess you also know that they didn’t want the Dicer and simply focus on their syncbutton Electroheads, even if there’s a lot of DJs who still like scratching and using different midicontroller plus selfmade mappings.

First of all, W stop trolling… you can’t be that out of touch with the scene that you’re still spewing this “DJing without turntables is FAKE!” nonsense.

I’ve been playing since ’83; paid my dues with back breaking crate hauls, and having followed NI since the earliest versions of Traktor DJ Studio, this is great news!

My take on the ADJ8 in the back is that Dubfire’s test was really one for workflow and not necessarily on a finished production model. The closeup shots even show label-maker labels stuck on the face (indication that it is likely a prototype)

I agree that motorized platters would ease a traditional DJ’s transition to controllers, but I think the platters are there for bends and effects control as opposed to scratching… I think NI understands their boundaries with folks like Craze and Rafik, and would not imply that the wheels are for scratching.

Based on their past build quality, I’d say this is a quality piece of kit that is worthy of my hard earned cash. Some things don’t need a test drive..(especially when DJTT will surely review this puppy… or even a DJTT Edition with arcade buttons!!)

• Colly.tv

I was really hoping they would come out with something like this and it seems to have everything I had wanted. There you go, there is your $2000. Not only that, look at Rane’s new Serato mixer. That thing is $2600, so i’m figuring it going to be the up there in the same price range. Jeez, i just got rid of my Xone 4D, so now i’m going to have to grab one of these. I just hope the build quality is as good as a Xone 4D. Just to clarify as there still seems to be confusion – the new controller will have a built in sound card. The one in the video was there just in case the prototype controller failed. I repeat – THE NEW NI CONTROLLER HAS A BUILT IN SOUND CARD. I have it in writing and it’s on NI Facebook page too.

I think there is defo need for jogs, not necessarily for scratching but from somone who had been djing tradionally since ’91 and been digi jocking with traktor since around ’00 its nice to be able to push / pull back into line. not everyone beat grids and sometimes things drift a little, I for one feel much more comfortable with jogs on my vci100se than just an X1 as even though I own full traktor scartch pro and an audio 8 its rarely that I use it with timecode.

The jogs can also be set for EFX type modulation – cos they are bigger than a pot you get a more controlled anmount of modulation.

All looks sweet though, nice work Ean – fill us in on a price when you can 😉 x

• Arclyte

Ahh You know what this means… A huge sell off of old SKUs is coming even sooner. If you have been eyeing any software there will be discounts a plenty! 🙂 I wonder will this drop the price of the X1 closer to $99… Hmm. I hope so that thing will fly off shelves at $99! Everyone hold on to your cash for just a bit longer! Hey Rane how is your $500 SL1 looking now?

• Anonymous

Did you notice that the top effects section looks like it’s modular and maybe an add on piece. If you look at the pictures it staggered and doesn’t look seamless with the main unit.

You can see the the seperation and raised top effects bar, or maybe I’m just startin to lose my vision

i can’t really understand the sense of jog wheels…..REALLY !!!

it’s very a make-no-sense syncing manual with these controllers….for that there’s OUR SPLENDID 1200 or CDJ

• DJ FDRK

I think you are wrong on some of your speculations.

Sampler decks:
It will have two new 4 track samplers, so that will be 8 samplebanks. Like Serato.

Build in audio:
On the magenta picture… Top frame… Audio 8… So i recon it doesn’t have a build in soundcard, but it does have a led-volum-indicator. Maybe it will have one version with soundcard and one without.

good idea, but there simply needs to be a VCI witha four deck mixer,… add a couple more features (like superknobs/buttons), and you have a VCI 1000… or something…

Fuck the hardware, I’m loving the software. I’d control it with an MPD32 and an X-Session pro, with the MPD32 mapped to cues on the regular decks and sample launch on the sample decks, map sample volume to the MPD’s upfaders and effects to the encoders, then set up the X-Session as I would normally.

• .Cracker

Of course this comes out just after I buy my vci-100 se. Oh well I’m happy with my controller.

• Exigence

Hopefully it’s less than $1200, and there are more than 4 sample/loop cells per deck. That was one of the draws to torq, but then serato added the bridge, and I was debating that jump…. But if this were between $600-900 to compete with the xponent or the vci I would definitely make the move.

• ELECTROARTURO

• BMO

Nice to see native instruments coming out with its own controller with jog wheels. It looks like they’re hardware has very good quality build (I only have the audio 2 dj, and it’s fine), I’ve only heard great thigns about the kontrol X1. Hopefully this will once again follow suit and impress just as much. Unfortunately, seeing as how Native instruments does create high quality products, I feel like this controller will most likely be out of reach for beginning or even moderately seasoned DJs; and is more geared towards attracting Advanced DJs who use high-end CDJs.

JOGWHEEL POSITION FAIL!

• nem0nic

It’s highly likely that this controller will be MIDI compatible, but will speak to Traktor using NI’s own protocol.

• Neolithic

I think its very predictable, all in one “midi” controller and bundled software, big deal! The Traktor update is the important thing here, not the controller.

• ToS

Long-passed the time for NI to create multi-window layout and allow multiple screens.

• Johbremat

S’pose it will be your mixing style that will determine whether or not this is worth.

Not feeling the controller-style (this, xone:DX or the VMS4) and the need to switch between decks. Personal preference, fo’sure, but I prefer my 2x VCI-100 and the independent control over each deck.

(And yes, I do realise that unless you’re Claude Young, it would be physically impossible to manipulate all four jog wheels at once :-P~ ).

The software could be good. Unless this is a version of Traktor explicitly designed for the new controller (ala ITCH) it looks like you might have to page between the search panes and four decks. Can’t see how you’d fit four decks, samplers, library, crates/hot-switch playlists and FX all on the same window.

• Wondershock

I don’t want to sound too skeptical… But a couple of things caught my eye. First off, those look like smaller platters (relatively) than what we’re used to in terms of the VCI-100/300. Is scratching being de-emphasized? I know that the VCI series has never been stellar with scratching compared to vinyl, but I worry about a lack of precise control.

Also, those knobs look like they may be a proprietary plastic variety… I know NI hasn’t made a ton of controller-type products, but I’m curious to see how easily those knobs can be acquired/swapped/replaced, and if we’ll see comparable quality to the Vestax ones.

Lastly, MIDI or HID? Customizable or locked in? Special expanded program for custom mappings, or fleshed out Traktor interface for such?

Either way, I’m always excited about progress. Can’t wait to hear more!

• Sqyquest

Oh hell yes. I’ve been looking for a new controller (currently Behringer BCD3000) for a while now. New software (presumably a Traktor variant) looks neat too, but it’ll need some truly swanky features for me to switch from Pro.

• DjKeyWee

This controller looks fine. It indeed have it’s own soundcard built-in. I HOPE we can still use timecode unless this will s*cks “big” time. Just can’t deal myself with ONLY 2 jogs. Let’s see. One way or another… I’ll have one ;o)

• Haze324

if this is to rival Itch and the DX, price will have to be competitive to the DX’s 1200.00. Also, I would think with this being marketed as a “system” it would come bundled with full version of Traktor Pro (whatever the version is)…making the price reasonable. If this is meant to compete with a 4D, NI is going after a small market. I don’t think the price will be thru the roof — the X1, has a great price at 200.00. So figure 700-800 bucks for the controller, 100-200 for the sound card, 100 for the license = 1100.00.

Still needs colored waveforms!! 🙂 Looks cool though.
Jogwheels completely in the wrong position for scratching.
in my experience, you want as much distance between the crossfader and jog wheels as possible. Ideally this should be hip distance (turntable + mixer) for a natural stance.

With the jog wheels right next to the fader in a small controller- then scratching is very awkward and cramped, plus all the controls you use much more frequently (looping, cues, sync, tempo, pause, play, sync) are further away and tucked behind a jog wheel.

move the jog wheel away and you have now created more space between the cross fader and wheel which make for a more natural scratching stance. This position also prioritizes the controls used more often making them easier to access.

While I can understand the natural reaction to something different is often negative, I highly recommend trying new concepts before making any judgments.

• dj professor ben

I hate to be a nattering nabob of negativity but I have to ask… if the sample player has to take up a deck slot like it seems, and it only has four slots like it seems, isn’t this a step backwards from just using a specially prepared track with samples and cuepoints set up? How is this really different other than that with cuepoints you get 8 instead of 4?

Well, I can’t be the first person to think of that; hopefully someone at NI did too and the new software is actually much more flexible than what we can infer from the teaser vid….

• NZ

I hope they gonna move forward with iPad software + Connection Cable.
So we’ll have to care 3 things: Controller/Soundcard+iPad+Headphones)

• Anonymous

I think having a sample player is NI’s answer to the Traktor/Maschine combo people have asked for. Maschine doesn’t have to run within Traktor or be linked through midi now because DJ’s could just drag and drop arrangements into the sample player, grid it, and launch Maschine samples IN SYNC.

For those of use with Maschine you should be very excited. If you look at the layout of the sample player it’s got 8 knobs per sample player. The top part of Maschine is perfect for it. Prepare your midi maps.

• DJ G

Besides running MachineI think the Audio 8 is there as a backup.. New gear is always tricky and if I was rockin Space and NI gave me something totally fresh I would still bring my old workin setup just in case..

• Will

• Dj Nvidia

Not gonna lie, really excited about the new software update (hopefully, it won’t cost extra to update). Especially excited for the sample and looping… currently, I have pasted together my favorite samples into one MP3 and mapped cue points to it, then loaded the MP3 to decks C+D and used those to play samples…

As for the controller… congrats to DJ TT for being in on the design (I know it will be great) but personally not that excited.

not a big fan of jog-wheels on top and what I really wanted was some motorized platters (similar to the NS7 or V7). Or at least through in some universality like the Numark MixDeck…

Summary: Software (WOW!)… Hardware (Ehh)

• nem0nic

I think the decks are switchable in A/C and B/D pairs, not a/b and c/d pairs.
