Time to exhale; the Traktor Kontrol S4 four-deck controller for Traktor Pro is here, and DJ Tech Tools has a full review. Native Instruments’ first all-in-one, 4-channel controller/soundcard for Traktor Pro comes with the specialized Traktor Pro S4 software, as well as some lofty expectations. Let’s find out where the S4 lives up to the hype, and where it may fall a bit short.
Editor’s Note: The Kontrol S4 was updated in September, 2013. Check out the new controller here and a full review here.

THE GOOD:
All-in-one 4-deck software/controller/audio interface system based on tried and true Native Instruments technology. Comes with Traktor Pro S4 with new Sample Decks and Loop Recorder. MIDI compatibility for other gear and software, but much higher resolution control between the hardware and Traktor Pro S4. Two analog inputs and excellent Audio 4 DJ-like sound quality.
THE BAD:
No price break yet for licensed Traktor Pro users. Operating on USB bus power alone is not recommended due to dim LEDs. Big-time cue point juggler and button mashing controllerists will probably still want a supplemental “grid” controller. No group saving of sample sets. Not compatible with DVS systems yet (NI says this is coming soon).
THE BOTTOM LINE:
Native Instruments has delivered on its promise to create an all-in-one 4-deck Traktor Pro system with admirable software/hardware integration, a nod to the burgeoning controllerist community, and a soundcard that’s actually worth using. By not trying to be all things to all DJs, they’ve designed a system that may not be exactly what you want, but is closer to it than anything else this year.
HARDWARE/SOFTWARE INTEGRATION
THE HARDWARE STORY
Much has been made about the Kontrol S4’s size, which at almost 20 inches wide and 13 inches deep, is significantly larger than the Vestax VCI-100, and is even bigger than the bulky M-Audio Xponent. Large DJ bags I have that accommodate those two controllers couldn’t fit the Kontrol S4, but Native Instruments does have a flight case/performance stand available for $189 MSRP, and you can bet that compatible bags and cases will be popping up (one DJTT reader suggests the Camelbak Motherlode).
Despite the unit’s size, it’s weight, at only 7.5 pounds, is good news for weary backs and shoulders. Hauling it around is an easy task, but that brings up questions of durability. If you’re familiar with NI’s Maschine, the Kontrol S4 brings a very similar build quality, with aluminum plating over the two decks and a plastic case. By no means does it feel flimsy, but neither is it built to absorb relentless poundings for decades on end like Technics 1200 turntables. The bottom line is that you’ll want to protect this investment well if you’re taking it to gigs.
Two decks on either side of the unit showcase identical control sets. An effects section sits above the jogwheel, and a highly responsive pitch fader flanks the loop/sample/cue/transport section.
The four-channel mixer section features 3-band EQ and a filter for each channel. Beautiful blue-and-orange LED meters show the pre-fader level for each channel. If you get clipping on the meter, adjust the level down using the channel’s Gain encoder, and at any time you can push the encoder to return to the original gain level. The filters and EQ sound warm and creamy, and the high-resolution action on them is great. However, I’m dismayed at the absence of EQ kill controls for each of the three bands.
Kontrol S4’s rubberized knobs and push-button endless rotary encoders feel solid and sturdy with a satisfying action, as do to 60 mm pitch and channel faders. Six rubber feet on the bottom secure the unit to a tabletop.
JOG WHEELS
Many people want to know how the Kontrol S4 jog wheels are for scratching. The short answer is that they are excellent for scratching… for controller jog wheels. Their tops plates are touch-sensitive and switch-activated (like the CDJ jog wheels), so scratching with them gives you an accurate sense of timing for releasing the “record.” Also, they are high-resolution wheels, with 1,000 points per revolution, and as a result, their responsiveness is excellent. Personally, I prefer larger wheels or scratching, and even without that caveat, these aren’t going to the be the vinyl-killing jog wheels for turntablists. While on the subject of scratching, I’ll mention that the Kontrol S4’s crossfader is one of the nicest I’ve felt on any non-Vestax DJ controller. However, it does not live up to high-end crossfaders on scratch mixers, and it is not officially replaceable.
The jog wheels’ rubberized, outer rims provide a nice grip for tempo bending, and their magnetic resistance aids in giving you very sensitive and precise tempo bending.
You can also press Shift and use a jog wheel to quickly scroll forward and backward on a deck’s track. It’s the fastest way to skip to a certain part of a track on the S4.
BROWSING TRACKS
To preview a track in the headphone cue, browse to it and push the Browse encoder. That start the preview player, and you can use the Browse encoder to skip through the track as you listen. It’s also possible to copy any track, sample, or recorded loop from one deck for effect slot to another.
The browsing and loading process is simple and efficient — everything a digital DJ should want out of a hardware controller. I do however wish that Shift + Loop Move would scroll through folders at a higher speed, as my iTunes library has hundreds of folders in it.
FOUR DECKS & FX
Traktor Pro S4’s decks A and B are always set as Track Decks, whereas decks C and D can be each configured as a Track Deck, Sample Deck or Live Input to play audio from the two analog inputs. You can for instance have three Track Decks and one Sample Deck, or two Track Decks and two Live Inputs, etc.
Each of the four decks can be routed to FX1, FX2 or both, by activating the FX buttons under the Gain knobs on each mixer channel. The Mode button on each FX Unit toggles between Group mode (three effects at once) and Single effect mode (one effect with three editable parameters). In Single mode, Shift + FX On scrolls through the list of 28 effects to choose from, and in Group mode, Shift + FX buttons 1-3 selects from the list. Another wishlist item here: make effect selection faster by using Shift + the FX Units knobs.
If you activate four FX Units in Preferences, FX Units 1-4 will be assigned to decks A-D respectively, and that cannot be changed. Other than that, using four deck can be fun, but there is seemingly a quirk in the software where a sample Deck C or D that was pulled from Deck A or B will still be assigned to the FX for Deck A and B rather than their own FX Unit.
For those unfamiliar with Traktor, I’ll just say briefly that the effects on offer draw from NI’s extensive effects expertise. They all sound great and many of them are remarkably expressive, especially when you dig into them in Single mode. From basic delay and reverb to live remixing effects like Beat Slicer and Beat Masher or the beautifully mutating Flanger Pulse and Reverse Grain, there’s enough here to keep you engrossed for hours of practice. With two FX Units in Group mode, you can have up to six tempo-synced effects on a single source… if you dare.
CUE POINTS AND LOOPS
Many of us can’t or don’t want to live with a measly four cue point triggers, so you have the option in Preferences to set the Samples buttons to be Hotcues 5-8. However, what would be even better is to be able to cycle through the function of the Samples buttons on the fly somehow, without have to open Preferences.
The small display and first row of controls beneath the jog wheel control your loops. The Loop size encoder sets the length of a loop (1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32 beats). Pushing Loop Size then sets a loop of that length automatically. Use the encoder to lengthen or shorten the loop on the fly, and then exit the loop by pushing Loop Move.
You can set loops manually with the Loop In and Out buttons and fine tune the in/out points if needed by holding down the Loop In/Out buttons and using the jog wheel.
Once a loop is set, the Loop Move encoder moves it forward or backward in the track according to the displayed loop length. You can store an active loop to an empty Hotcue slot by pressing a Hotcue button. Loop Hotcue light up green, while cue point Hotcues light up blue.
SAMPLE DECKS AND LOOP RECORDER
Traktor Pro S4’s Sample Decks have four sample slots each for holding one-shots or loops of up to 32 beats long. Sample Decks C and D recording from and sync to the tempo of Track Decks A and B respectively. You can fill the sample slots by either loading them from your Track Collection, creating a loop and assigning it to a Sample button, or creating a sample based on the current loop length by hitting an empty Sample button, either while the Track Deck is playing or stopped.
Once you have samples in slots, press the Sample buttons once to trigger playback and again to stop. For more control over the samples, switch to Deck C or D. Then the Hotcue buttons become re-trigger buttons for each sample, and the jog wheel applies to them for sample scratching or tempo bending. Also, the Loop Move encoder becomes a sample volume knob, while Loop Size become a sample filter. All the while, you still have full mixer channel control over the Sample Deck and FX options as well.
The Loop Recorder can record from either the Main Output of Traktor Pro S4, the output of any deck with the Cue button activated, or from the Aux input, which is likely to be a microphone plugged into Channel D of the Kontrol S4. In the S4’s Loop Recorder section, press the Size button to scroll through recorded loop sizes of 4, 8, 16, or 32 beats (synced to the master tempo). Press Rec and record your loop. When finished, your recording will play back, and you can adjust the Dry/Wet knob to mix the loop with the rest of the audio. At this point, you can hit Undo to scrap the recording, record again to overdub a layer, or bounce the recording to an empty sample slot.
If all the sample slots are full, you can clear them out by pressing Shift + Sample button. Don’t worry, all your samples are saved automatically to your collection in the All Samples favorite folder. One area NI could improve on in a software update is to make it possible to save and then reload groups of 2-8 samples with group names, so a DJ could really exploit the ability of the Sample Decks to be the foundation of a completely original set.
AUDIO INTERFACE
A built-in 2-in, 2-out audio interface within the Kontrol S4 makes use of the same components and technology as the well-regarded NI Audio 4 DJ interface. You get the same or at least practically identical audio quality in the S4 as in the Audio 4 DJ all the way up to 24-bit/96 kHz resolution.
Connections include two main outputs: balanced 1/4-inch (that can route to XLR inputs with the right cables) and unbalanced RCA. There is no booth output with a separate volume knob, but both main outputs can be used simultaneously and routed to separate speakers.
SOUND QUALITY
I A/B tested the Kontrol S4 against a TC Electronic StudioKonnekt 48 FireWire interface playing the same songs out of the same speakers. Most people, including myself, would consider the StudioKonnekt to be a higher-end interface than NI’s line, but the difference in audio quality was negligible. I felt that the StudioKonnekt pumped out a slightly more defined, warm and round sound, but one could hardly tell the difference. Overall, I’m very pleased with the sound quality of the Kontrol S4.
Its soundcard sends plenty of signal as well. There’s nothing to worry about as far as having a loud enough sound from the S4, either from the main outs or the headphone cue. If you’re using the S4 with only USB bus power, the headphone level dips slightly, but even then it shouldn’t be a problem.
USB BUS POWER VS. POWER ADAPTER
You can run the Kontrol S4 on USB bus power (from a fully powered USB 2.0 bus) with some limitations. In addition to small dip in headphone level, the bigger problem with USB bus power is that the LEDs become extremely dim — so much so that I don’t recommend doing it in daylight or bright light. Even in near darkness the LEDs look very dim when using USB bus power.
I prefer running the Kontrol S4 with a power adapter, but when I pulled the power adapter plug out to see what happened during a session, the audio cut out entirely for a second or two before the USB bus power kicked in and the set resumed. Hotplugging the power cord back in did nothing to disrupt the music.
SUMMARY
It isn’t perfect of course. Traktor Pro S4 is at version 1.0.1 at the time of this review. I’ve pointed out some things I’d like to see, and I’m sure every early S4 user will have his or her own wishlist as well. One other big hole is a complete solution for creating custom user mappings. Right now there is some customization available, but only on top of the default Kontrol S4 mapping.
All told, I’m very impressed with Kontrol S4 and hope NI gets going on implementing some user suggestions soon. At around $900 street price, I could see it as a value for someone who’s absolutely sure they will use it extensively, but who also doesn’t already own Traktor Pro. Unfortunately, there’s no price break for licensed Traktor Pro users, even though a large chunk of the value of the purchase has to be the Pro S4 software.
The Kontrol S4 has something to offer digital DJs of all experience levels. The tight integration between hardware and software, super-responsive controls, excellent audio quality and innovative performance and live remixing features in a single package take some of the mystery and hassle out of setting up a DJ system and replace it with a helluva lot of fun.

una pregunta de que material estan echos todos lo botones del controlador s4
does anyone find an issue with the small size and placement of the cue/start buttons?!? coming from playing on CDJ’s… i have a hard time understanding how this wouldnt suck having such small cue/start buttons! the pioneer at least has normal size buttons and in a logical placement….
has anyone found this to be annoying? such a shame that the pioneer doesnt include REAL mixer functions like inputs and VU meters :-
I want to buy this amazing controller but why in the official page the product is more expensive?
which is the trick? why is cheaper to buy it here?
which is the difference?
DJTechtools doesn’t want to make as much money off of it as NI does, since they are more concerned with making lifelong customers than making a quick $100. And if you buy from them, get the free chroma caps and DVD explaining all the fun tips & tricks, then you’re much more likely to use the money you save towards a MF3D or TMA-1s, also available from their store.
Seems there are a lot of problems with the faders, so can they be replaced?!

now they can, go for an innofader.
just bought this badboy. Feels sturdy, smells good like new plastic.
Unfortunately they shipped the product with traktor pro 1 instead of version 2. Also the product serial number which you have to use to activate the software was incorrect.
Waiting to hear back from there warranty department as to how this can be fixed. Buying 1100$ worth of toy and not being able to play with it is a shitty feeling.
same thing happened to me, download the demo of traktor pro 2 and use that code to activate it fully. it will work
i’ll buy it the day it becomes DVS compatible! that day will be perfect! So let know!
I own the Traktor 2 Pro & Traktor S4.
Is the delay effect in group mode synced to tempo?
What are the parameters exactly the single knob controls?
Is it rate rate and length together?
The knob’s value is from 0 – 100, what does the value represent?
I’ve had this thing 4 weeks now…combined with a midi fighter, I’ve got no issue whatsoever leaving behind 2 turntables and a microphone…CDJ’s, iWhatevers, etc…I’ve matched so many beats I see them before sheep when I sleep…and I could give two shizzles about automating it…rock on purists, I’m turning my 1200’s into end tables;)
Btw, added bonus for free…for a good time, take this thing through an airport…you’ll get to spend time explaining controllerism to TSA! Then try it in another country where you don’t speak the same language…make sure you wear a DJTT shirt!
Sounds fun, but since I usually have to smoke whatever I have left before going through security, stopping by cinnabon, and finding my gate, I like to keep conversation with the TSA to a minimum.

Another extremely disappointed S4 user. I very lightly (30min) use my S4 a couple of times a week and channel A fader is already fucked.
Not happy with the build quality and Not happy with NI ignoring my emails
Why didnt you do a review on the fader quality?!???!?!?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thats probably one of the most important parts on the mixer and you didn’t even mention it in your article. A good review tears the hardware to pieces and finds every single flaw.

help!!! i just bought an s4 a week ago and i have trouble with my upfader on deck b.
it works fine but when i bring it all the way up it starts to go down slowly on the screen. when i push it back up it responds and goes all the way up but starts to decrease slowly again and sound level starts to drop.
i don’t know what to do about this. is there a way i can fix it??
I’m an another disappointed person by NI. Just purchased my traktor S4 and i found out that clicking sounds every few seconds. Tried checking dozen of forums. Been trying for 6 hours and i haven’t found a proper solution. I contacted NI and i haven’t got a response for that. As i saw there are dozens of users that had the same problem. DON’T BUY THIS PRODUCT UNLESS YOU GOT A MAC! ITS NOT WORKING PROPERLY WITH WINDOWS. I tried it on a mac and it works fine. I tried it on two high spec laptops and it has that annoying clicking sound.
So i recommend buying the Pioneer DJT-1 or the Denon Dmc.
turn of ur ticks
is there or will there be a rotary kit made for traktor s4 for those who love rotary instead of faders?
Ean, Great controller… but it kills me that they dropped the Xone 4-band eq, especially when you’ve got dedicated effects – filters. The bottom chunky knob would be perfect for bass. Is it a conflict with A&H? That is my assumption as they’ve entered the controller arena with the DX, guess it would be somewhat of a counter intuitive selling strategy to give NI their signature mixer… Too bad. NI is hamstringing their sales. I like the Ecler option, but I know at least 10 professional touring DJ’s who refuse to buy the S4, but would, if only as a portable solution for practicing, because they use a xone 62/92 with Trakor Scratch Pro when performing… Any thoughts/info you can share with the community or is it lock-down due to an NI-A&H thing? Thanks
FIRST OF ALL THE EQ ON THE INTERNAL MIXER ISNT AS GOOD AS A REAL MIXER!!!(HOW CAN THEY MISS THIS ONE THE TEST?) TRY THE HI FREQ. AND YOU WILL HEAR.
SPINBACKS ARE MORE OR LESS IMPOSSIBLE AS IT STOPS(MISSED THIS ONE AS WELL) !!!!
STILL A GOOD GEAR!
I’m currently using Traktor Pro with a Numark Stealth and this looks like my next upgrade. I don’t have the cash to throw down on CDJ’s.
No more comments???? this is like a soap opera in here…. good reading!!!
No more commnets, this is like a soap opera in here….
Ok, so there’s no cases left. Even for those that pre-ordered. I received a refund for mine but I don’t wanna travel with mine without some sort of protection.
So, Mr Golden (or other writers), please can you do a review on bags that can fit this controller + laptop because I’ve been searching with mixed results. I’d like to see what you think.
Thanks
Dj tech tools and odyssey (redline series) both have cases for the S-4 .I own both the odyssey redline is slightly bigger than the dj tech tools but has a much better build quality.Check out their website to see the cases.
Hmmmm, I preordered over a month ago (can’t remember date) to ensure I’d get one. I also preordered the case too. Today my S4 is shipped from US but case is not. OK so DJTT dont have any left, thats ok but NI shouldn’t have released this thing without providing enough stock to at least fill the pre orders.
So I cant take this thing out til February or risk damaging it. (i guess plenty of time to sharpen my skills on it)
Also another gripe with NI, no discounts for existing Traktor users, even though every other version upgrade is discounted. And NI slash the prices of other Traktor products so we loyal fans have paid full price for our original versions, cant sell them on and are stung almost $1000 to get the new one. So loyal Traktor users are the losers.
FUCK YOU to NI, and Thanks to DJTT.
I have the S4 for about 2 weeks now. Comming from Itch and SSL the basics of loading a track and starting to mix was easy. I pretty much been having a good time with it. There are a few things i didnt like which was the library or crate mode (itch ssl is better there). The headphone song sound like there out of phase with 2 song listening (cue and master out). I am alwas adjusting my track gains for each song. the sample decks one shot is only one shot you cant do a repeated hit u need to use the shift button for that and have the deck in play mode (easier in SSL) unless im doing something wrong.
Over all this is a beast and i can deal with the little quirks it has. now i have both dvs systems kinda 3 but itch is sorta the same as ssl. Going from SSL to Traktor was easy for me.
If you guys are true djs you can learn on anything within a few minutes of getting in front of it and working it out. at least the basic concept of mixing.
you are spot on the track gains,it is a problem you have to constantly keep changing them as the levels do not match even with auto gain turned on the difference in levels between two tracks is phenomenal. The channel LEDs are no support either for gain matching as they are not accurate as those on a dj mixer .
Thanks Andrew, I’ll try that… although NI gets more and more ridiculous… after their forum FINALLY opens, I try to post my problem to get some help in there and while other posts about S4 get published right away, my message doesn’t go through (i guess it’s bad publicity for NI)… disgrace…
If you are using a laptop take out the battery and just use power.
I think this will solve the dropouts and clicks.
Yes it was frustrating with the recent ni server crash to access forum but look for workaround on other forum.
Cheers
Hey guys,
Another disappointed S4 – PC user with audio dropouts and clicks…
I really cannot understand why I should do all this troubleshooting, search on the internet for any leads, encounter company websites that don’t work for 5 days because they had a really good sale, go on forums to figure out solutions from similarly affected users, finally download elaborate system tools and perform tests, deactivating processes that might make my computer not run again, only to use a brand new device I paid 1000 bucks to use…
Customer service is a joke, 5 days after my support request and no answer whatsoever (not even a “we’re looking into it, we’re gonna get back to you” answer). I also see I’m not alone on this one, but NI is behaving like nothing happened…
Unprofessional, HUGELY disappointing NI…
Th.
Well so far I’ve had my s4 for about a week. I can say I love the thing so far. Things i found a little annoying are the jog I feel are just slightly off when releasing on timing. In addition. I had no idea I had to recalibrate the jog wheels after the update was at a house party with jog wheels that that would stop the track completely and not start up when you touch the top! Figured it out quickly but was pretty silly. Definately recalibrate all you controls regularly. After transport and such it needed recalibration, I personally recommend doing it before any major gig. So far its pretty diesel though. I found it to be very stable on my macbook pro. I think you may need more ram and processing then they state on the box to be fully stable.
Hi what do you mean recalibrate? why would you have to keep doing this and how is it done?
Started on Technics over 10 years ago and switched to CDJ’s and Serato a few years back. After a week on my roommates S4 I am determined to get one soon. My roommate is fine with me using it at home but I want my own to gig out with.
First people said CD’s were cheating. Once they were accepted you were a cheater if you use a Timecode system that showed you how to match the beats on the screen. Now many respected DJ’s use timecode and they want to call you a cheater if your tracks are synced in Ableton or Traktor. Yet there are plenty of DJs packing out and selling out shows using the latest technology.
Get with the times people or you will get left behind by younger talent who are unfazed by your old DJ ways.
hi am thinking in getting the s4 but i am new to all this.
would this be the right thing to buy to start off or would i just be wasteing my money if so wot else is out there on the market wot i could buy?
any input would be appreciated thanks alot!

So many problems with freezing with s4 , Mac & pC , Just take a look in the Ni forum .It’s a nightmare .
can we use the same software with pioneers or our traktor pro software will work with s4
Jus wondering why the creator’s of the S4 did not think it was important to build in a separate Volume Control for dj booth speakers.
I think the reason for this is that they’re assuming most S4 users will be hooking their system into a club-install mixer, instead of directly into the sound system.
That’s usually what DJs do, so they can not only use the booth out, but also easily transition into a controllerist/CDJ user without stopping the flow of the music.
Jus wondering why the creator’s of the S4 did not think it was important to build in a separate Volume Control for dj booth speakers.
Hey guys,
Can anyone shed light oh this. Can the S4 replace my analogue mixer? Meaning can I just plug my CD-Js into the inputs and use the S4 like a regular mixer. If you can, does the software need to be running? When tag team with some of my mates some of them like to use standard audio CDs. It would be nice if we could just bypass the regular mixer. Thank you.
I don’t have any inside info, but I think that NI will come with a mid-range controller next year. Something between X1 and S4. Like they did with Traktor Pro – they released the expensive T.Pro and than the T.Duo. Same thing with the sound cards: Audio DJ 8, then 4 and then 2.
Not too many people care about 4 decks, imo. S4 is really big and a bit too expensive for many of us, so it’s clear that there is a market for a simpler product.
So maybe an “S2” will pop after the hollidyas – smaller, cheaper, 2 channels onky, fewer FX options, something like the Duo.
Just my 2 cents.
I wish they would just come out with the player section only. For those of us that already bought there audio 8 and Traktor Pro. I prefer using my own rotary mixer.
The Jog wheels are so small (ha,ha) over all it’s great. I love the magnetic resistance is great for control on them.
I am looking forward for a full review on the DN-MC6000 and DN-SC2000
Looking forward to a pre/pro-review of the Denon DN-MC6000!
Anybody knows, how to deactivate the crossfader in s4? Help please!

I was very intrigued by the S4 as I am moving overseas shortly and thus liquidating my current DJ set-up of SL1200, DJM-909, Serato and tons of vinyl (shipping charges are astronomical).
I played around with a demo unit at my local GC for about an hour and was reasonablly impressed with the unit save for one fact:
The Crossfader is just not sturdy enough (honestly, it feels like a Gemini UMX fader). I am wary that it will NOT last 3 months of hardcore abuse.
That is a deal breaker for me (especially coming from the 909 which had the best faders IMHO). The Price is not bad considering it will replace your Mixer and TT/CDJ (avg investment of $1500-2500), but why are we forced to give on the quality of the faders? As I am sure many of the DJ’s who started DJing back in the day of Gemini/ GLiPro mixers don’t want t to relive the nightmares of crappy faders.
guys, found this bag, its perfekt!

@ Gee,
Damn bro, I’ve got one on back order, won’t get it for a few weeks though. I hope this isn’t a problem common to all of them.
Good luck mate

OK, I am a licenced Traktor user and when I upgraded from TSD to TSP i recieved a discount. I was happy with that.
There is no discount to licenced Traktor users to upgrade to TS4. Ok, that sucks but I can deal with it.
What sucks more is how NI have slahed the prices of TSP TSD TP and TD so anyone wishing to sell their previous copies to upgrade to S4, can’t get hardly anything for these. So therefor we’re essentially paying more for this cos our previous investment is worthless!!
I love their software and hardware but that is a pretty evil move by NI.
Received mine today and I am stoked. It does everything that it says it does and more. I am having no issues whatsoever. Installation on the supposedly troublesome Dell series was a breeze. Playback on the internal Audio DJ 4 was also free from any artifacts. Will test it out tomorrow with Maschine.
Looking forward to hearing how other S4 owners are experiencing.
Cheers
Can’t wait to see Ean playing around with xone dx and put his magic tsi on it. Ean.. you rock!!!!
I don’t scratch on my set and that’s why i chose to buy a xone dx. Guys.. I’m telling you all.. it’s so much fun and flawlessy in both worlds traktor and itch (I like traktor better maybe because I’m new to itch) and it has the best sound output of all DJ “all in one” midi controller + soundcard. Yes it does help a bit to fix that crappy traktor’s eq
I realize the vinyl control is not yet implemented, but from the pictures, it appears that turntables will be limited to controlling decks C & D, and that the loop decks can only be used via C & D as well. Can anyone at DJTT confirm that?
If so, this is disappointing, as it would mean that the loop decks and vinyl control can’t be used together. I like NI’s stuff (have and use Traktor Scratch all the time) but they have this habit of limiting things like this (it’s also frustrating to me that Traktor doesn’t allow me to route C & D into the same channel in the output preferences, in effect using them as loop decks), and I don’t understand why. I was hoping they would remedy this, maybe they still can.
I’ve been waiting for a controller like this for awhile now… Although I do not have the extra $$ at the moment for this, I’m considering selling my Gaming Desktop and my Kontrol X1 so I can pick up a laptop and this.

I don’t think Pioneer is gonna drop a MIDI controller for a while after they’ve spent so much R&D on making their mixer CD combos nearly a club standard. Also I think that the video for the DJM 2000 even said that it was their “answer” to DVS systems because it allows you to digitally hook up two CDJs and use external hard drives for the music. Probably not the right strategy in the long run, but I think that’s the way they want to go at the moment.
Ps-Please excuse my spelling above-i work nights & have not slept for the last 36 hours,
Yawn!!!
Seems a bit overpriced at £750 quid- Pioneer have to be developing a similar controller by now surely?
You know i dont think its that much at all considering what you get for your money,
I was using a denon dnhd2500 & dnx050 mixer,that lot cost over a £1000 when new & the s4 is a lot less for a hell of a lot more.
Coming from a vinyl background i am not really a frenzied button pusher,i am of the opinion that less is more & all this james zabelia/ean golden tapping/effects over use is not my thing, same as turntablism.
But that does not mean i do not admire there rhythmic ability & manual dexterity-Power to ya!
Its just different strokes for different folks,we can all use the s4 in a way that suits our own style whatever it is.
I must admit i got mine yesterday & i cannot stop playing with it,its just so hands on it begs to be played with!
I am now seriously considering getting scratch pro & 2 X1’s for my 1210’s/empath rotary set up which i am just using to record & digitize my vinyl with.
Lastly if Pioneer do enter the game with a controller of there own, dont expect it to be cheap.
I would be willing to speculate it would be at least double the current s4 price if not more,
Peace

This is an old “problem” with traktor. There is a lag between you move the knobs and the response on the software. It is not a latency issue it is just how does it works. Definetely sounds better when you control your eq. externally or even better, the whole mix. In the other hand i will not say that sounds crap (At least traktor with audio dj 4), but it is a common issue, well documented in the aspect how the software do the digital summing. I always prefer to mix externally with an allen and heat mixer and it is true you hear the difference. I do not have the S4, but i suppose it is the same issue

that is pretty scary that ableton’s eq sounds better because their 3 eq is colored garbage.
The 8 is a slight step in the right direction but still pretty bad.
Either way I can’t wait to download the new software, I’ll pass on the controller but it is a nice all in one type of thing but USB 2.0 will be a thing of the past very quickly. Unless your a true pro and drop thousands of dollars every year for new gear ya might as well wait.
MIDI clock send I meant.[/qoute]
not real sure why cutting MIDI clock send would have any effect on your ability to interface an S4 to other software…
the real question is whether the S4 can communicate strictly as a MIDI-over-USB device or whether it is limited to doing things using its proprietary NHL protocol. if it has to use NHL, an S4 can’t just plug into virtual dj without some layer of driver code that translates NHL into something that the other software will understand. right now, there is exactly one device, the S4, that does NHL and exactly one piece of software, Pro S4, that “reads” stuff transmitted over NHL.
so, if someone out there has the manual to an S4, could you please take a few minutes and have a look to see if there is a setting on the S4 that will force it to transmit MIDI-over-USB without the NHL protocol (which would be useful to users of other software)?
if in fact the S4 is limited to doing its work over NHL, you couldn’t plug it into my copy of Traktor Duo without the same heartache of needing some extra layer of software to translate the stuff coming over NHL into something that an old copy of Traktor Duo can understand…
it will take more than a good TSI file…
MIDI clock send I meant.

Anyone tried integration with Ableton/Kore/Maschine?
I have tried and I am still trying to get my Maschine to connect with the S4. As of now I haven’t had any luck.
The S4 uses an NI-proprietary protocol, NHL, to communicate with Traktor Pro S4. NHL allows for faster/better/higher-res communications with the software.
Unless the manual tells you that the S4 can be put into a MIDI-over-USB mode that does not employ NHL, chances are that the S4 won’t talk to Ableton/Kore or any other software that is using basic MIDI-over-USB to communicate.
As for using a Maschine with an S4 & Traktor Pro S4, I would check to see if Traktor Pro S4 could interface to devices that communicate in MIDI-over-USB mode as a second device. It may be that Traktor Pro S4 is limited to using ONLY devices that communicate over the NHL protocol. I personally think that would be something of a fatal flaw as it would probably torque off a lot of big bucks performing DJs but since I do not have the manual, I can’t say for sure…
If NI were going to force all devices communicating to Traktor Pro S4 to communicate over NHL I would expect revisions of their Kontrol X1 and Maschine controllers that use NHL. Somehow I can’t believe they would do that to people but…
Do… Want…
My problem is that I’d be shelling out a lot of cash for this. That’s the one huge issue. I want to test one out as soon as possible before buying. I do like the way your review is, it’s very detailed and informing.

Well they did have some brief insight on the DN-MC6000 from the BPM 2010 show in one of their articles.
“Those of you that frequent the DJ TechTools forums and have been active in the “Traktor Kontrol S4 comparison”-style threads will probably be able to recall that I was all about getting this over the S4 if I had the money/inclination a while back. However, as much as this is a nice controller, with plenty of controls, when I played with this after the S4, it felt somehow cluttered in layout. OK, this isn’t directly designed to integrate with a bespoke piece of software, but the surface was just too busy for me. Also, I didn’t like the feel of the jog wheels too much. It is a good bit of kit for the cost, but I think that in a straight head-to-head the S4 just beats this to the finish. Especially as the prices aren’t going to be that far apart and the S4 ships with a full version of Traktor.
Redeeming features were that the faders were smooth and the knobs felt reasonably accurate on small adjustments. The sound on this was of a good quality, maybe not quite up to the S4 if you’re a full on audiophile, but to my bass-battered ears it was still good enough to be confident about hooking it direct to a club’s amp.”
Now Please do a review of the New DENON DJ Controller: http://www.denondj.com/DN-MC6000-P125.aspx# I am trying to decide between both.

Doesn’t it seem weird there’s basically no dissenting opinions in the comments section? Everyone universally loves the S4? I mean, it looks like a fine product, and I love Native Instruments. But really?
No one is mentioning that $1000 is a really huge price tag for essentially a midi controller and software? Ableton Live Intro and a Novation Launchpad, which in many ways can do far more than the S4, only costs $288 total?
I’m not saying the S4 isn’t a good product. I’m just wondering why I’m the only one with an opposing opinion here. Where is the journalistic integrity?
Ok here is the pic S4 vs VCI-300 – Big Difference!

Now I just need to get the case for it or does anyone recommend an alternative. The box was pretty large so I know it won’t fit in my VCI-300 case even though the APC-40 did?
I will post pics as soon as I can for the person that wanted the comparison. I am totally new to Traktor, well since the dreaded FS2 that never worked for me, so I hope this will be a much better experience. Ok, so I guess I open it now…..lol

perfect
Take for example the posters above…they cant get Maschine to work…they want to intergate it with Traktor and ableton and another midi controller…WTF! How could you ever just popp up in your local club with all that crapp and then have a clear mind to make sure that it doesnt crash!?!?!
Im seeing this emerging pattern where companies are starting to just put out high priced midi controllers. Thats all these things are. While im cool with the whole dj/producer/performer trend, for the most part the community is just regular djs. Most dont care to perform or produce our own tracks on the fly. We just want to mix tracks together.
If they just made robust mixers that controls all dj softwares and leave the TTs and CDJS to control the time coded vinyl and CDs. That would end all this. Performers could hook up extra equipment to the mixer if need by and a regular djs can just come in and dj!!
If you could imagine for a sec, the community could have a standard again. Go to the store pick out your favorite mixer that controls all. Go to the club and it would have the most used mixer through out the community. The key being you wouldn’t have to worry about bringing your serato or traktor box. Clubs wouldn’t have to worry about you messing with the wires or switching from Mono to stereo, sound cards etc. Just bring your laptop.
The rane mixer with serato built in is a good start. Lets keep it going by throwing in Traktor too and then have other makers of mixers follow suit.
Looks like DJTT did drop the ball on shipping these out. Main reason i ordered from here is i want to support the site but also because i read they will be the first to ship S4 out due to large quantities ordered and their relationship with NI. now my friends who’ve pre ordered from local stores in toronto have gotten theirs on monday or even last friday while my order hasnt even shipped yet… weird..
I bought one yesterday at my local guitar center…(chicago)
pretty big..a little bigger than my mixtrack and same lenght size as the kontrol x1.
only thing i don’t understand is why the fx, load buttons are so small.
also the jog wheels could have been slighty larger.
but in all pretty good piece of equipment.
played around with it last night…i like it
NI should have provided a link for video tutorials..because the new software is killer.

@ DJ Jackmeoff. I found that the S$ will drastically cut down on what I have to carry Weight and all. Yes with out the jog wheels its a midi controller, but its a midi controller that fits the program that its connected to perfectly. I have one issue my self. I have found that it works well, seamlessly with the X1 controller. But I got the Maschine back in August. I like the huge buttons and I had it going well with my traktor. Now that I have the S4 I can’t find a way to intergrate the two. I still want to use my Maschine as a midi controller. Can someone help me with this issue. Thanks.
love traktor but how would this work at the club?
You’d have to drag this huge thing around plus your laptop! I think its a step backwards in terms of standardization and a waste of money. If you remove the jog wheels…its just an midi board. If you know traktor its highly customizable and will work with just about any midi board.
Works well for mobile djs businesses but not for your run of the mill circuit dj.
Still dreaming about the day where all mixers/or one will work with all dj software. Load a midi map and your off!
Is it possible to mess around with the mapping?
I’m thinking about some intensive superknob mapping for channel 2 and 3’s eq – i think that i could retire my X1 then..

Mine will be leaving from Sweetwater on Wed/Thurs so should get to Australia on Mon/Tues at latest. Some retailers were trying to sell here for 1300 aud and our dollar is on par with USD. So essentially I am saving more than 3-400 dollars after shipping via fedex.

Looking forward to some more in depth tutorials, but I am sure they are on the way. Ean showed more of a musician/performer perspective which was nice.

Why pre-order? To ensure you get a controller. Ni is totally sold out due to larger than expected sales and most dealers only got a small amount of their order. Due to our large pre order, we were able to secure stock when many other stores will be sold out for a while.
I wonder if I can just cancel the order, they never charge me that 10%. I can buy it now anywhere! The wait is killing me!!

Hi!
i just got this controller today, its pretty cool!
Can someone explain me how to make a “Ean Golden style” video with screen and webcam simultaneously? So i can make a little tryout and post it!
Thankss
I just figured it out – they are all watching the World Series.
I also waited for a long time.. I felt as if my $900 dollars were being played with, no communication, no information of what so ever.. I decided to opt out of support DJTT, unfortunately, due to doubt, and went ahead and purchased it at guitar center.. payed there and then and didn’t have to worry of having insufficient funds by the time DJTT decided to charge me.
“The filters and EQ sound warm and creamy” … I’m getting warm and creamy waiting for my s4 to show up.
I want to make love to it
hahaha! best comment ever!

Why has my unit not been shipped yet? What is the point of pre-ordering when I could go down to the local store and buy one tomorrow? Seriously disappointed in DJTECHTOOLS.

I’m also disappointed. I don’t mind having to wait until November 1st or 2nd or even 3rd, however they are not giving us any information on release day. No email confirmations or anything. One of the main reasons I went with them is because they mentioned how they would be first. I want to support them but it’s hard when they are not communicating to their loyal customers. An email or any update i believe would be a nice gesture.
hell yea
My guess is that they are all extremely busy preparing shipments. They sold out of their entire first order meaning they must have at least 100 S4s sitting in their office with 100 DJs waiting. I would like to see an email too (I DID get an email saying that I have been charged for it, but nothing about shipping it) but if no email means they are boxing mind up and handing it to UPS then I’m happy.
I have Pre-Ordered mine on 10/06, I thought that we will be a good way to get ahead.
An auto email for everyone that pre-ordered must’ve been sent by now. I don’t wanna bitch about it more.
I know so, communication will happen soon. Now the partner DJTT are holding by the agreement that they made with NI and letting them control the distribution mean while others stores profit from them. that’s bull'” if that’s whats happening !? Maybe they miscalculated their sold units, maybe!?
They can only sell a certain amount or there’s other issues…. Maybe just NI not delivering them the units on a reasonable fashion, what ever it is. just hurry UP already.
PS: We deserve the best you guys. send us some Play Stickers this time i’m full of DJTT & MF’s.
Keep Up The Good Work. : )
I am impressed again and again. I just spend $700 on Novation controllers but ableton is unstable and crashing in Win 7 64. I might wish i spend it on this unit. But still i am happy with DJTT’s VCI and TSI mapping and TR-Pro, it is still my favorit DJ setup. And hope for a more steady Ableton.
Again a nice article and many thanks for all the great stuff here on DJTT.

Have to agree with Fred and Ninesevenfive, when will the S4’s be shipped guys?

Why does it look like the knobs aren’t fully attached in the photo of the whole back of the unit?
No monitor out… No canon XLR outputs… that makes it look more like a toy than a decent ‘pro’ mixer/controller. Still, they charge $1000… come on !!!
One thing what has always confused me about this controller is how Beat Jumps are performed. More than cue jumping I use Beat Jumps to edit and move about my tracks!
If anyone could shed some light on this it’d be greatly appreciated!
it is really cool!
Had a play on 1 this afternoon at West End DJ, definitely lighter than it looks and feels very nice. Overall I think NI did pretty well with this!
what function have the footswitch?
you can assign it to everything you want (maybe some shift function)
I maybe has missed something. But doesn’t it has monitor out? if not how do you do with your monitor speaker???
it doent have a monitor out, but you can use the RCA and jacks at the same time.

great review got mine on friday and agree with everything
what function have the footswitch?
This gear, to me, means a lot… means I no longer have to create my own custom edits of songs with intro/outros (i’ll be able to put an instrumental loop on without having to take up a deck) or take up a deck to drop my DJ name over a track and being able to record a scratch routine, then play it back while I play with the effects…
But I will NOT get this until it takes TSP timecode. I just picked up TSP (for that crazy reduced price), bought a few numark turntables, and have fell back in love with scratching… Just can’t give it up again.
So when they get timecode support, I will be the first one to order it….
Looks like fun. If they add DVS integration I would consider.
It would be nice to have a single real turntable plugged in jusdt for scratching.
I want to make love to it
Can’t wait the delivery!!, with the All Saints Day in Belgium everything is closed even the delivery companies… Gonna have to wait a few more days
I just wish for the Software update, dont care much for the controller.

When will we see this nifty little feature in the VCI mapping? ;)
it was in the 2.x mapping. shift + outer jog.
Fantastic Review. Very informative, thank you.
You can also press Shift and use a jog wheel to quickly scroll forward and backward on a deck’s track. It’s the fastest way to skip to a certain part of a track on the S4.
EAN your the bomb, much love from Amsterdam. Hope you get the license for some midi tweaking.
I already turned my back a bit on dj’ing due to it’s limitations and started to put my focus on producing, until this little baby showed up. The ability to endlessly loop on 4 sample decks and record my loops finally gives me the possibility to dj in a way i want to. I sincerely hope i can tell you guys in a couple of months that the s4 lived up to my expectations.
Welcome to the future :D. I wish all new s4 owners a lot of creativity and inspiration.

great article, but too critical IMO
2 questions:
1. Will this thing work with the normal traktor pro, I mean is there a traktor pro TSI file out there right now?
2. Do the cue and sample buttons have background light? It doesn’t seems so..?!
1) why would you want to do that? the controller ships with the software and is a nearly perfect soft-&hardware integration..
2) yes they do.

“make effect selection faster by using Shift + the FX Units knobs.”
is it possible to modify the original s4 mapping to achive this and other stuff like shift + fx button 1&2 activating fx 3&4..
You’d think with all the buttons doing double duty that it wouldn’t kill them to at least let the EQ knobs be pushbutton kills as well, with small light indicators for active kills. It wouldn’t take up any more space.
So if customization is limited, are you still able to map to keyboard for additional control functions this thing lacks?
The S4 looks like a good step in the right direction, but I’m totally happy to wait for a later version. I do wonder if NI is going to make the standalone TPro more congruent with this down the line, or if they are not going to focus upgrade attention on it now.
Ean of DJ Tech Tools has expressed a desire to create a DJTT mapping of the S4, but only if NI gives him all the freedom he needs, so time will determine how that ends up.
Now that woud be incredible if we could have a DJTT mapping that used NHL mode. I got mine Saturday and have been engrossed in the manual and trying to wrap my head around how to best utilize sample decks and loop recorders.
You guys at the office yet? I wanna walk the block n a half away to pick mine up!!
Well I ordered mine. FYI I made Music Friends price match Guitar Center 10% coupon. If you order from MUSIC123 they will match and add another 23% off.
Got mine for $800 which helps with the controller change. Got a VCI-100 with the HD update for sale.
For those of you that are also hoping they get sent out today, have you been billed? I’m hoping also but have not yet seen my account charged…
wooooooooooo!
eight?
Gutted I’ve gotta wait until I have a few more penny’s in the bank before I get one, for me the S4 equals game changer.

Great review but I’d take a slight point with this part

“I’ll mention that the Kontrol S4’s crossfader is one of the nicest I’ve felt on any non-Vestax DJ controller. However, it does not live up to high-end crossfaders on scratch mixers,”
+++
Vestax faders are seriously pony!! only with the new PMC 05, Vestax have finally pulled there thumbs out of there butts and bothered to play catch up and make a proper modern pro scratch xfade. True I’ve only had limited use with the S4, but over the last ten plus years I’ve owned Penny & Giles, Pro X, Inno Fade and my friend often leaves his Rane 56 down my studio. It’s my opinion that only personal preference/taste would say if any of those xfade’s are any better than whats in the S4.
+++
The cut in lag is tiny, the fade bounce’s with perfect weight and feel and best of all N.I. chose the same fat fade caps which are proven to be the most popular type of scratch friendly caps as they are like the one’s found on the Inno fade, Pro X and Rane 56.
+++
Just in case there’s some that are still yet to see how epic the S4 is for scratching check this awesome vid out!
although i had my reservations about this thing when i first heard about it, i see what the fuss is about now – looks like a really great controller. the built in 4 channel mixer is the main selling point for me.
I have a question: is the Kontrol S4 compatible with Traktor 3, or does it only work with the new S4 version of Traktor Pro?
Possibly one of my most anticipated pieces to come in this year.. I hope y’all sent them out today, I ordered mine and can’t wait to lay into it and see what it is truly capable of. from what I have seen so far this is going to be a revolutionary piece for all DJ’s.
Already got mine. I totally agree with this article.
Love it! 🙂
Did you guys send them out today? I can’t wait to play with this thing..
This is a fine piece of gear and can’t wait for delivery baby!
wooooooooooo!
