Up until now, Serato had an exclusive 5 year run on the Rane hardware. If you wanted to use the SL3 box sitting in the club as a sound card, for example, that was not possible. Dj TechTools has learned that there are brand new ASIO and Core Audio drivers that allow any software to use Rane 68 mixers and SL3 boxes as multi-channel sound cards. This is huge because it means some djs can use the Rane hardware already in clubs as their sound card- greatly simplifying set-up. More info and links after the break.
HOW TO GET IT
Right now the drivers are in BETA and can only be download in the 2.2 public beta section of the Serato Sratch forum in this thread. Please note, you will need to register in order to download these drivers. Steve Macatee, Director of New Product Development at Rane told us once they are stable and out of beta they will be available as a free download from Rane.com
SIGN OF THE TIMES?
The exclusive pairing of Rane hardware and Serato software may have made sense for the past few years with Rane mixers being predominant in the US market and Serato having a solid hold on our local digital djs. Those paradigms have been changing lately with Traktor Scratch gaining momentum and the Traktor S4 software stealing away Itch users. For me personally, I love the Rane hardware and it breaks my heart to bring extra sound cards into a club that already has a great one installed. We have also learned that there is a tricky way to use the ubiquitous Rane TTm-57SL mixer as a multi channel sound card on mac computers and I will be posting an article on how to do that next week!
MULTI CHANNEL SUPPORT
Install the drivers above (there are separate downloads for the 68 and SL3 boxes) and presto you will have multi-channel support. 4 channels with the 68 and 3 on the SL3. One of the great features about the new 68, and a reason for its hefty price tag of $2500, are the 2 discrete sound cards. That means you can easily plug your Traktor computer into the mixer at the same time as a Serato dj and seamlessly switch over without plugging in any cables or dealing with routing issues. We just got the mixer into the office today so I have not had a chance to really test the drivers for performance but that feedback and more will be contained in the upcoming Rane 68 review.
SUPPORTED DEVICES
SL1 Audio Interface
- Support already exists for multi channel ASIO (windows) but no support for mac.
SL3 Audio Interface
- New drivers offer Cross platform support for multi channel audio!
TTM-57SL Mixer
- Existing support for multi channel ASIO and single channel Core Audio (mac). We will write a tutorial next week on how to get multi channel audio on a MAC.
68 Mixer
- New Drivers allow for multi channel support on both ASIO and Core Audio platforms.
NOT QUITE PERFECT
Traktor Scratch users are probably wondering, well what about me? Don’t I still need to have my audio 4 or audio 8 plugged in to make Traktor Scratch software work? Yes- unfortunately your right. Rane hardware will not be supported by NI as an official interface for their Scratch line of software products like scratch duo and pro. We asked for an official comment and Tobias Thon, head of communications at NI, wrote back ” so far there seem to be no specific plans here to certify these drivers for Traktor Scratch”. Hopefully that leaves some wiggle room for support in the future? We hope so. Personally, I believe multi-platform support for all mixers would be good for the craft of djing and even the business too!
Can the Serato Box work as a “Soundcard” for Traktor? and give it the clarity in clubs?
If so how would you go about connecting it?
I dont need it to control Vinyl and all that. just a soundcard.
I have a rane ttm 57 mixer and I would like to know what asio drivers and set up I need to run my traktor pro I have a PC
how are you using the rane 68 with traktor please i love traktor and have the rane 68 i really wanna use traktor?
Where is the write up for the multi channel traktor set up for ttm57?
Was it posted?
Thanks!!!
i cant find the download section for the rane sl3 drivers?
OK…now this article initially had me thinking I understood, but now after all of what I’ve read, I am a bit confused.
Maybe it’s that “the more you know, the more you realize you don’t know” theory…
Please someone explain this as if I was a noob…
I have a Serato SL3 box.
I have Traktor Pro.
I have a Native Instruments Kontrol X1
I have two Pioneer CDJ 800mk2’s
Can I use my Serato SL3 box with the Konrtol X1 and / or CDJ 800s…with Traktor Pro?
In a perfect world, I could use them all (4 channels) with 2 channels for the X1 and 2 channels for the 800s.
Any and all suggestions would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks,
DJ Serventi

Just wanted to clear some things up here.
First off, you are able to use the Sixty Eight and SL3 as the sound card for Traktor Scratch Pro if your not using turntables/cd players with TSP’s timecode.
This means that if you currently control TSP with midi controllers and not turntables or cd decks then you DON’T NEED NI’s soundcard (Audio 8,4,duo) in order to run audio from Traktor into the Sixty Eight or SL3.
As far as midi… every button, knob, and slider on the Sixty Eight is midi mappable in Traktor or any other software program.
Once again.. no need for NI’s sound card.
I have created a midi preset specifically for Traktor that has everything mapped to a two deck setup.
If anyone here is interested in using it email me at zachs@rane.com and I’ll send it to you.
As far as using the Sixty Eight’s dual sound card option with, say, one computer running Scratch Live and one running Traktor…. this works great.
Both computer can run audio into all channels simultaneously.
This makes swapping djs very easy.
Dj A is playing with, say, Scratch Live.
Dj B plugs in running Traktor.
Dj B opens the Traktor preferences, selects the Sixty Eight as the sound device, selects the outputs, and starts playing out of the channels he/she selects.
Really straight forward and really easy.
Feel free to contact me directly if anyone has any questions:)
SO I CAN USE SL1 WITH TRAKTOR SCRATCH BUT NOT CDS OR TIMECODE? EH SO WOTS POINT I WANT TO USE TIMECODE WITH SL1 OTHER THAN SCRATCH LIVE ANY IDEAS?
Ooops that post got a buit jumbled. Hopefully you get the drift.
In order to get separate channels in say Ableton you have to create an “Aggregated Device” in the Audio/Midi setup.
Once the Audio/midi setup is open, click on Audio.
Next click on the Audio tab at the very top of your computer screen and then choose to “Open Aggregate Device Manager”.
“We have also learned that there is a tricky way to use the ubiquitous Rane TTm-57SL mixer as a multi channel sound card on mac computers and I will be posting an article on how to do that next week!”
I tried this today at work with Traktor and Ableton and the TTM57. It works!
I used the below method…..
Once open, click on the + sign to create a new Aggregated Device.
Once created you will see the TTM57s ins and outs.
Select all the ins and outs.
Once done, open up your sound preferences and choose ‘Aggregated Device’ as your sound device.
Now open whatever program your using and choose the same thing in sound preferences.
You will also want to make sure outputs 1/2 and 3/4 are enabled in the sound preferences of whatever program your using.

Thanks Ean that cleared up any confusion pretty well. Good article.
There are a lot of Djs out there that just use Traktor Pro or other dj software that is not scratch related. For them, all they need is a sound card and now you can use Rane hardware as your sound card.
Traktor Scratch Djs require a sound card as a dongle so they cant take advantage of these drivers (without a clever hack that we will be covering soon)
So this article applies to everyone EXCEPT traktor scratch djs- BUT – hopefully NI is paying attention and will also add that support in the future.
Traktor will work with the SL3, but the Audio4/8 must be plugged as a sort of big ass dongle. I do believe is what they are referring.
“seems the statements in the opening paragraph and the one about still needing an audio8 or audio4 completely contradict each other. Sorry I’m just a tad confused”
i agree with the above statement. although i’ve been djing analog for a long time i’m new to the digital world having just purchased traktor scratch pro. i realize that serato and traktor have different sound cards hence you’re unable to utilize one program with the other program’s sound card which forces dj’s to switch up gear sometimes.
if anyone can simplify what this article is pointing out in regards to traktor users that would be great! it’s hard to tell whether technology solves problems or just creates new ones:)
Uh….so….if you still need your sound card for traktor scratch….and the sl3….what exactly is different here and/or the big deal. I showed this to another DJTT user and we both agreed it seems the statements in the opening paragraph and the one about still needing an audio8 or audio4 completely contradict each other. Sorry I’m just a tad confused
Don’t think for a second that RANE did this for US. They did this for marketshare.
I think one of the main reasons Rane did this is simply because they should of done it many years ago. When you consider what NI offer with the Audio8/4 and Traktor, the whole Rane Serato and Itch deal really doesn’t present great value for money. Maybe this is proof that Traktor is finally catching up? The way things are going there will be very little to choose between, Serato and Rane are finally realizing that digital dj’n shouldn’t be so locked down, it’s software after all!

I’ve got insane love for the TTM 56 tho personally I don’t rate the 68, I’ve only had a short play on one but it just doesn’t feel like a Rane mixer, the cue buttons are nasty. I may be wrong but isn’t the soundcard in the 57 a little out dated now?
No evidence. Just looks like more and more A&H products are being pushed to the front. Just saying, from a purely business standpoint, this looks like the way they’re headed. With the new Denon and next wave of Pioneers ready to drop it makes sense to get ahead of the curve. RANE makes wonderful products but for some reason, people put them as second class when compared to A&H and Pio. gear. As I stated in my first post, the 68 WOULD be obsolete IF Serato liscenced its code to Denon for the 1600/600. I hope the end of this cycle of this partnership leads to RANE equipment that is TSP certified. Again, just dreaming out loud…..
Don’t think for a second that RANE did this for US. They did this for marketshare. Their deal with Serato is ending and Serato is moving toward making A&H their focal point.
Are you saying that Serato and A&H will partner up for Scratch Live rather than Rane? As well as Rane? Evidence?
I might be wrong, but given that Rane have so much invested with Scratch Live, I find it very hard to imagine that they’d simply let it go to someone else. It’s a massive cash cow for them. I’m sure that Serato would be happy to licence it (just like ITCH) to selected manufacturers.
Don’t think for a second that RANE did this for US. They did this for marketshare. Their deal with Serato is ending and Serato is moving toward making A&H their focal point. This is just a marketing move to get people to stay with them. Why would I buy a 68 when I can by a Denon 1600X and keep a stack and a half and have 1 wire p’n’p? Maybe they will make a mixer like the 57 for TSP (nevermind the Denon 600X has that slot covered). Hopefully other companies will see the VALUE in making things easy for EVERYONE to enjoy. I know this is business, so maybe make certain features availabe with certain hardware, but make basic functionality with all BASIC. Just dreaming out loud…..

To kind of piggy-back off what everyone else is saying about club set-ups, almost every club in Chicago has a Pioneer DJM-600 or 800, with either Techncs or CDJ-800s (usually both).
So to me it really doesn’t matter, I just plug in my Audio 8, an X1, with my laptop on a CRANE stand and I am set to go. Use timecode for transport and the X1 for everything else…
I personally like this set-up: it universal no matter what you use, and if you really want to use a particular set-up, you can simply move the club gear….
“So I’d rather show up, hook up ONE cable, play, and then be able to leave with no problems.”
A little off topic, but this is why I went all midi as well; I don’t have to worry about what’s in the booth or what condition it’s in; I just need room for my laptop and (small) controller.
I used to run Traktor with the SL-1, but have since switched to the Audio 2 so I only need to run cable to the mixer (and not a second one just for a headphone channel).
While I’d love to use turntables more, few places have a decent pair anymore 🙁
This again is why clubs that are serious about supporting Digital DJs should have switch boxes and systems in place so multiple users can show up, hook up, play, and go without interrupting anything.
Likewise, DJs should also be smarter about things. I’ll never understand it when I see DJs show up with a whole DVS setup to play a 30-60 minute set. You’re going to go through all that trouble for a short set? Even worse are the die-hards who bring a full setup (turntables, mixer, laptop, etc) for a short set.
This is one big reason why I went Midi. 9 out of 10 times I play it’ll be short sets someone offers me in a night full of DJs. So I’d rather show up, hook up ONE cable, play, and then be able to leave with no problems. DJs need to get smarter on this and either demand more time if they want the grandiose setup, or find ways to compact their lives so they can show up, play, and not have issues hooking up items and such.
Pity about it not supporting Scratch….
But I suppose…thats how it works.
hope that one day we can use:
– Traktor Scratch Pro with Rane SL1 & SL3
– Serato Scratch Live with NI Audio8dj & Audio4dj
how cool to go for a gig and simply plug traktor (or whatever) to any hardware. thats the future! i hate this cable shizzle! ni should be more kooperative with others like serato (bridge!) and rane stuff. we djs choose what fits most our needs and not what the market says. to develop a driver is not a big thing. but costumers have to ask for it!
cheers by the way!

I remember this being suggested in an earlier post, http://www.djtechtools.com/2010/05/09/traktor-scratch-vs-serato-scratch/, “If Traktor manages to re-engineer the TTM-57SL and make it a Traktor approved sound card they could eliminate that problem.” At the time I thought genius, I am glad to see this idea becoming more of a reality. I have the 68 on my Christmas wish list, but part of me wants to wait and see where the market goes.
Some notes, as some of the comments shoot at the wrong target or simply tell wrong things.
– The Rane 57 has multi channel core audio already. All you need is create a virtual device in Audio Midi Setup to join the two channels into one device from Traktors Perspective.
– Has anyone actually tried to use two channels of the SixtyEight for ScratchLive and two Channels for Traktor/ Some other ASIO/CoreAudio capable App?
I don’t have a 68 but i would like to know if this actually works or not. What about hot takeover of single channels as with two laptops each running ScratchLive?
– The Rane SL-1 has ASIO drivers for a long time now. CoreAudio will never happen though due to hardware restrictions
– There are cracked Traktor Scratch Pro Versions (for Mac too) on the Web which seem to work with Timecode Vinyl with the Rane SL-3.
So it is just NativeInstruments marketing Scheme. They could enable that with other Hardware than the Audio8 in no time if they wanted to.
What i have seen is TSP 1.2.6 with RaneSL3 doing Timecode controlled Waveform manipulation.
I don’t know HOW they did that though.
– No 32bit driver of any manufacturer will run on 64bit Windows7. Come on, that is not Rane’s fault. You can read that even on Microsoft support pages. They made a 64Bit driver.
– It is not Rane’s fault either that AbletonLive and TraktorPro do not accept a 64Bit ASIO Driver. THEY should step their Game up.
– The sixty eight can and does send regular Midi as far as i know. Only the TTM57 has its proprietary protocol.
Until they get full timecode and midi, I won’t care.
I already have a TTM57SL, (I do VJ’ing about once a month) and I plug in my audio 8 into it, with an X1.
What I really want: Traktor to DO VIDEO-MIXING! So I won’t have to use a Serato (which I don’t like), and a traktor certified mixer with full MIDI so I can control all the effects and stuff..
C’mon Traktor, even Virtual DJ does video mixing, get wit the times!
not really about rane but it could help… does something prevent someone to do an Audio8 or Audio4 “driver emulator” that will let traktor scratch run without having the device pluggged ?

Ok on a more serious note,
Will we also be able to use the controls on the Rane TTM-57 with Traktor or other programs? This has great appeal of users of programs like Deckadance or DjDecks
I don’t think this would happen, the 57 doesn’t use standard MIDI, its a proprietary language… they might be able to make a workaround like with the VCI300 but nothing yet
Well, i know that 57 works with traktor for a long time as a soundcard, not for scratch but as a multichanell output sound card on windows, have vorked few times like that and have no problems 🙂
Let’s hope that the new ASIO drivers aren’t as crappy as the ASIO drivers for the SL-1. Last time I looked they were a hot mess.
This is a good thing, of course, but it’s not revolutionary — you still won’t be able to use the MIDI controls on the mixers, and you won’t be able to use timecode. It would be great if they eventually opened those things up — this artificial restriction of possibilities of the hardware is a really shortsighted and counterproductive mindset. I ADORE Rane hardware, I really do; there is nothing more satisfying than mixing with my TTM-56. But if it’s closed down like this, it makes it harder for DJs working in clubs to use the available equipment, and it makes it harder for the consumer to experiment with different software and different possibilities. I would love a 68 but it’s not going to happen under these circumstances (even if I were primarily a serato user, I think). Of course, I couldn’t afford to buy one anyway, so it’s not like Rane cares what I think, hehehe….
That’s great, but not if you have Windows 7 64-bit (Do they even sale notebooks anymore with 32-bit Win 7?). The new ASIO drivers will NOT work with Traktor Pro or Ableton Live as they support only 32-bit ASIO drivers.
Rane will only allow you to install the 64-bit drivers if you have Windows 7 64-bit. The 32-bit drivers will not install on a 64-bit Operation System.
Rane should at least give you the option to install the 32-bit ASIO drivers to on Win 7 64-bit. I contacted Rane and they told me to partition the drive and install Windows 7 32-bit. I laughed! No way am I going to lose half my SSD hard drive space, activate all the license again, lose RAM memory, and 64-bit program support. All this wait for ASIO and I ended up ordering an Audio 8 card. YOU FAIL RANE! At least I got rock hard Cue Buttons on the Sixty-Eight that doesn’t always engage.
This is a interesting development. Pity it doesn’t yet support the Scratch versions of the NI software, because if it did, the 64 could very quickly become the standard for mixers in the modern club.
I would be nice to know you can just turn up and plug in.
From what I been reading over on the serato boards is that they just opened up the sound card. We just have to wait and see if they let everyone use the other controls via midi.
Now if the club has a 57/68 or a sl3, you can just plug ang play. Bring some X1’s and your ready to rock
Ok on a more serious note,
Will we also be able to use the controls on the Rane TTM-57 with Traktor or other programs? This has great appeal of users of programs like Deckadance or DjDecks
