The Evolution of Traktor

Traktor was first introduced over 10 years ago, and since then, it has become an institution when it comes to digital DJing. The impact the software has had on the DJ scene as well as shaping the trends and developments is both undeniable and impressive. Looking back at the development of Traktor sparks nostalgia and warm fuzzy feelings very much like old school Nintendo does for many of us. In today’s article I will take you through the evolution of Traktor from 2000 through today.

The video below is a great example of how far digital DJing has come but continue reading for a look back to its humble beginnings.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was in a pretty committed relationship with PCDJ when I first met Traktor and the chemistry was spot on. The switch was an obvious choice for me and I haven’t looked back since. Today, the market has branched off into many different focuses and styles of digital DJing with very impressive software like Ableton and Serato. Here is a look at how the program and the UI has changed over the years.

Traktor DJ Studio 1

Traktor was first released in 2000. The initial versions were Traktor Studio and Traktor DJ, with Traktor Studio being more full-featured.

Traktor DJ Studio 2

In 2002, Traktor DJ Studio 2 was released, which offered several new features including scratch macros. It also expanded its looping, MIDI, and cue point functionality. In 2003, Traktor DJ Studio 2.5 was released. This new version expanded the time stretching functionality, added Open Sound Control(OSC) support, and gave the user limited ability to customize the look of the interface.

Traktor Final Scratch

In 2003, Native Instruments partnered with Stanton Magnetics to develop the software for their “Final Scratch” digital vinyl system. This partnership gave Stanton a Win/Mac version of the Final Scratch software and allowed Native Instruments to use the Final Scratch timecode engine in their own Traktor line.

Traktor 3

In 2005, Native Instruments added vinyl emulation capability to version 2.6 of Traktor DJ Studio. Version 2.6 included live input, streaming internet broadcasting, support for more file formats, and greatly expanded MIDI capability. Soon afterward, Traktor DJ Studio 3 added two more playback decks (for a total of four), built-in effects, Beatport online store integration, a four-channel mixer, a Universal Binary version, deck caching, and minor improvements to existing features.

On October 11, 2006, the partnership between Native Instruments and Stanton Magnetics ended, and Traktor DJ Studio 3 was renamed Traktor 3.

Traktor Pro

In 2008, an updated version of Traktor Pro, and a new version of the DJ studio, Traktor Scratch Pro were released. Traktor Scratch Pro had additional DVS functionality enabled, including the specifically designed Audio 8 DJ audio interface, and timecoded CD or vinyl control.

Traktor Pro S4

When Native Instruments released its newest DJ controller, the S4, it came bundled with an, in many ways redesigned software, adding sample decks among other things. The Traktor Pro S4 also became the natural inspiration for what came next.

Traktor Pro 2

On April 1st 2011, Native Instruments will release its newest DJ software and if you haven’t already read our article with a solid 10 minute video walk through by Ean Golden, you should do that right now. In the meantime I’ll be right here, waiting for holographic DJing with Minority Report gestures.

Special thanks to DJ FDRK, StuC and the people who posted in the thread which gave us the idea to put together this article.

Does anyone know how I can import my cues and track markings from the old “Traktor DJ studio 3” to the new 2012 Tractor 2? I clearly have been using an old ghetto setup for about 7 years now and finally upgraded only to findout all my track info can’t be transferred? The manual says it cna’t be done…but is there way around it? please let me know
    thanks!

  • AshleaHu

I got the software last Fri, and ported my library across. I’ve yet to have a proper play with it, but shall be doing now, as I was waiting for my Audio 10 to turn up (which I’ll be picking up later today).

Previously I’ve been using an M-Audio fast track pro which limited me to just the two decks, so the Audio 10 coupled with giving me access to decks C & D makes me really excited about the sample decks as my sets have been inching towards the ‘live remix’ type for a while but the 2 deck restriction was frustrating.

Really liking the hi-res waveforms, really really nice and welcome addition.

Deff looking forward to my sets on Fri/Sat now, but recking I might have a little more prep to do than usual!

I for one really enjoyed this article. One of the biggest things I miss about vinyl is going to record stores and talking about all aspects of DJing. DJTT is the closest thing I can find to filling that gap and it constantly inspires and motivates me to keep on DJing and developing my skills. I’ve been DJing for 11 years now so I feel it’s pretty safe to say that I’ve got quite a bit of experience, but my philosophy is that you always continue to learn, no matter who you learn from. Music and our passion for it is what brings us all together, not negativity towards each other. I simply can’t understand what’s wrong with some of the people on here – if you don’t like or agree with what’s on here, don’t visit the site. DJTT costs us nothing to visit, some people would do well to remember that!

Keep up the good work Ean and co!

If you don’t like it, don’t read it. Can’t believe the negative comments her on what is a pretty standard retrospective review. Better you guys start your own site?

  • Hiphoppa

Yo, I’m new to the site and think it’s a great spot…. I found it because I was looking for midi controllers and came across DJTT… I’m registered with the forums as “hiphoppa” (I don’t do the facebook crap to have a login for this) and would like to comment on the small beef that is going on. My main spot for forum hanging is MPC-FORUMS.COM because I produce but my FIRST LOVE is DJing (since age 12… I’m 40 now!) to boot I’m a a pure vinyl addict and a late arrival to DVS systems. I found the article Ian wrote VERY informative because I had no idea how Traktor came about (or any other DVS system for that matter because as much as I’ve heard of them… I just wasn’t into them as I haven’t had to do a show in years but I keep my craft relevant for my own purposes and hobbies, teaching my son to rock the wheels has been very rewarding! I own traktor now, but my son is working with straight vinyl FIRST!)

If you believe it’s an ad “Cool”…. but why get all up in arms because your post was flagged? When just like I’ve been told over the years, “you don’t have to listen, read, watch, or look for something if you don’t want to”… it’s on you to be your own judge on the matter and grow up a little because last I checked and I’m new mind you that Ian is the owner of the site and makes decisions that work for him… It’s his site and you can create your own if you don’t like what/where he is going.

I’m as hardcore freedom of speech as it gets… and most venues allow you to rock what you say, but like anything else, sometime’s a post is flagged, including some of mine on the MPC site, but hey, let the feeling take you and allow this stress to rule your world (because of a friggin post, smh?) and move on.

xPEACE goes out to the DJTT team, my MPC-FORUM gang and all DJ’s that rock vinyl!

As long as you live, you have a life… why waste it on BS flags?

I’m left wondering what is wrong that some people keep posting these kind of negative things.. its almost like there is a hidden agenda out there somewhere trying to bring down DJTT. DJTT is awesome for what its about, and Ean does a remarkable job. I, and I think most DJTT users are very happy and grateful, not the other way around.

It sure brings back memories to those of us who have been on the traktor bandwagon for years.

Final Scratch 1.5 was quite a ride, what with its hockey-puck hardware and wobbly stability. Hardware requirements were higher on the PC, as the “puck”‘s hardware was not very powerful (and using flaky and unreliable chipsets, causing all sorts of issues).

Final Scratch 2 introduced the Firewire headaches, where the firewire controller chip on your hardware made or broke the experience. I still have the audio interface as a bookend on my shelves (ooh… that… pretty… brushed metal… ooh).

You have to respect Stanton for trying to leave the N2IT/Unix pairing via NI (but then a little less for hanging the FS2 customers high and dry when their alliance with NI exploded), but NI gets high praise for getting the whole concept to a rock solid state.

    Thank god for modern times.

This being said, Traktor itself has always been a stable, efficient piece of software.

About the “this is an ad” flamebaits. Ain’t nothing wrong with nostalgia and excitement at a major release in the DJ world. It was more than a fluff piece on how Traktor Pro 2 is awesome, will change the world, blablabla. It probably showed some Traktor fans UIs they have never seen (I, for one, had never laid eyes upon Traktor 1).

Yeah, I could have googled it. But it’s nice that someone did it for me.

As far I know, this site does accept contributions from the outside. So anyone who is unhappy with its content is free to write up some examples of what they consider good content and submit it.

Otherwise, flamebaiting is, always has, and always will be, pointless.

Every morning as I check email, news, horroscope, I go to DJTechTool.com. There is always valuable info there for me. I have even asked some pretty dumb questions in forum and got respectful answeres. The piece on Traktor evo brought back some warm & frustrating nostlaga. I enjoyed the blast to the past and into toaday and in no way found the article to be comercial. But, I am a Traktor Head. Thanks this wonderful Emag!

I have no idea what’s happened on here in the last while.

Ean Golden has never claimed to be a volunteer fighting for the cause of digital djing. He set up a blog to share HIS insight into the world of digital djing. His expertise is with Traktor (in all its forms, through the years) and that’s the best insight people get from this site. So what if he makes some money of the information he gives away for free to all of us. Who cares?!

Is he supposed to sit in his room blogging all night and not getting paid. The man has a chance to go and make some money for himself and we’re all still benefiting from it. This site is American, right? I thought doing what you love and getting paid for it was the American dream?

I for one thought this article was an informative and insightful look back through the history of the software a lot of us use. Isn’t one of the criticisms levelled against digital dj’s that we have no respect for the past? Well here we are, having respect for how technology got to where it is today but there has to be a whole load of people giving out because it’s not another ground breaking article.

As someone said above, why don’t you set up your own website and tell us all about how great you are at mapping controllers in Serato or Torq or wherever. Maybe you’ll get the following and fame you crave. And maybe then you won’t have to sit in your room typing bitter rants about someone else’s success.

Sorry this has gone on for so long but I felt I had to defend someone who has taught me a lot and allowed me access to a world I never though I’d be a part of. I’ve never even spoken to Ean Golden but his work on this site allowed me to become a “DJ” (my skill level is irrelevant). That is the beauty of this site and that should be upheld. I’m not a huge fan of censoring comments but I do agree that people who only come here to bitch and moan about content without ever offering anything constructive need policed.

I will agree with one thing, DJTT has suffered recently but it’s because of people writing inane and unhelpful comments, not because of the content Ean and the others who work hard behind the scenes work so hard to bring us.

    Rant over.

  • FFFreddYYY

will there be a mapping put out for the new traktor for the vci 100???

    • FDRK

If you’re not looking at using the new features like samplers and just want to control two decks you could probably just use the old mapping.

  • DJ Serventi

Respectfully disagree DJPC…To say that Ean is letting Mediocore Fame get to his head is like saying that Burning Man is going 100% Corporate. Ean has put in his time and has attracted many new people to this site, including me. I have been a session musician / DJ for many years, but have been inspired to take my music to the next level. THis site has helped me do just that. If Ean is getting some fame or attaboys let him. This is not intended to be a comparison…just a historical approach to Traktor. And BTW…I use Serato SL3!

There’s plenty of space for us all to be able to do our thing…

  • Scott Brio

I’ll go ahead and say I’m swaying toward the other side of the fence: I think DJTT is becoming flooded with TROLLS. You guys have to fix the anonymous posting. Everything else is good to go, but this guy, using the name “DJPC4” to mock DJPC3… case in point. He won’t say what he’s got to say if he’s really logged on as his DJTT profile or FaceBook etc.

DJTT is slowly becoming more popular, and all of a sudden Ean is “selling out” as if this is some cool underground hipster band that all of a sudden got a real paying contract for once, and everyone says they sold out.

Guess what, THE INTERNET IS AN AD. ONE BIG AD. God forbid DJTT try to make SOME money. I can only imagine how difficult it is to dedicate 98% of your day to a webpage only to make pennies on the dollar.

And for the record, I don’t think this blog post is an ad… and if it is, well I still enjoyed it :]

  • Ronnin1987

Its posible to use traktor 2 with vci100 fw.1.4?? Ean you can do a mapping for this??

As i remarked once again, some products are totally avoided here.

I sent a comment about it in the Battle of the 1s and 0s. Traktor Vs Ableton Vs Serato post. Example : there wasn’t any review concerning Torq 2.0.
If it wasn’t featured at Namm 2011, we wouldn’t have heard of it on djtechtools.
Ean’s answer mentioned that something will be done when it get released.Torq 2.0 is available since february 8th.

I tried to check it today and discovered that my comment and Ean’s answer had been removed.

The latest posts’ title are :

    – “Traktor Pro 2 – Officially Announced! (Exclusive Walk Through Video)”, describing the different new features.
It’s a review of the next version of Traktor Pro 2 that will be out in april.

    – “The Evolution of Traktor”.

    – “New Traktor Audio 6 and 10 Hardware Released”. They will be available in april.

It’s the same for production. Reason is a major software and most international artists who use it were awarded (i think about those whose tracks are featured on NFS underground 1)

Pro Tools is the daw that can be found worldwide in any production, mastering studio. Nothing about it. All about Ableton Live!!!!

I thought that you would be fair concerning all the major softwares out on the market.

I wonder if you really consider your readers or if you are Vestax, Native Instruments, Rane, Ableton shareholders.

Please, pay attention on those who regularly take a look at your tips, advices to step up their games.

That would be more loyal and respectful!!

If I were Ean or any of the DJTT staff reading most of the reponses to this article I would seriously consider removing the ‘comments’ section here.

Flaming, paranoia and immature, ill-thought comments do nothing to inspire writers to give up their time to provide information and input here.

Some people don’t deserve the right to comment – maybe me? who knows?

Keep up the good work DJTT regardless!!

I guess some people dont like change and would like things to stay in the past, stuck on there vci-100’s for ever like vinyl jocks who wont embrace digital.

Critical posts are never deleted. Readers now have the ability to flag a post- if 10 people flag a post it goes away until its been reviewed by a moderator. The only time a comments has been intentionally deleted are in the cases when some one violates the guidelines. I.E., no swearing excessively or saying racist or hateful things about other readers.

I see why people are calling this an ‘ad’, but i don’t agree with the downhill comments.
i’ll be honest, while it is was nice to have a look back at how Traktor changed over the years, i feel the article was lacking depth in the info. Just a series of screenshots with a couple of sentences, don’t really feel it showed fully how Traktor has evolved…

Traktor 3 still has to be my favorite to be honest. Rock solid and everything worked properly. The newer versions are great but there are a few things that bug me a little.

I will forever be a Trakor head though. Been using it Traktor 2 and cant really imagine using anything else.

I remember rocking the 1st Hercules controller and getting loads of shit for using a midi controller at gigs ;D

    Great Article and video.

  • PaulHolland DoubleDutchdj

Cool post, I joined in the fun at Traktor 3, don’t think I used any fx or midi for at least the first 2 months, going from vinyl to digital was a huge deal for me. Then I found a Vid on youtube of some dude who looked a bit like jesus rocking an arcade button VCI and the rest is history. Who knows if I got my MacBook pre Audio 8 release I may of ended up with SL-1 instead.
Performance feature wise, Traktor Pro 2 is pretty much there for me now, I do love my S4 but I can’t wait to get those features on my external dvs set up.
    ++
Now. what has the next chapter got in store? N.I. made promises a while back that they will better improve Maschine pairing which is pretty exciting when you bare in mind Mashine will soon be open to VST plugins.
This is great for Maschine owners especially if N.I. apply a clever routing options to make it pos to run Traktors decks thru third party plug ins.
I would also love to see some integration with Kore 2. Playing Kore with Traktor’s new loop recorder is sick (bye bye Zero4 sampler). But it would be even better if there was an option to bring some key aspects of Kore in to Traktors GUI, for instance a replacement for where a deck would be.
    ++
It’s only a matter of time before we see some new N.I. hardware, I give it 12 to 18 months, something X1 sized to cater for S4 features on a external setup would make me a very happy dj.

This is a great article, me to like sikosis started my Digital journey with final Scratch Pro. The System cost a little over $3000 and it came with a sony computer. This was revolutionary and no one in Detroit could believe I was using Turntables and a Computer to rock the party. I’m knocking on would because in this journey I have never had a Program or computer go down at a gig. I’ve been spinning since 1978 and when i ran across DDTT, it helped me take everything to another level. Ean and the fellows help me understand what was going on underneath the hood of the Technology. Dj Tech Tools Keep up the Great Work. Much Respect The Godfather.

You forgot to mention, what was it called… the way you could record a mixtape in T3 and had automation of your fx etc. could go back at any point to fix things, do overdubs etc.

That was great. Too bad it’s no longer there. Still the interface of Tpro was much better. Once you saw that, there was no going back.

For the folks ad DJTT, keep up the good work. It’s easy to sit on the sidelines and nit pick every little thing you don’t like, but it takes a ton of work to do what you guys have done.

I am sure Traktor products would not be where they are if you guys were not involved.

I like the idea of a Traktor through the years walkthrough, and its obviously timely, but i could have used a little more content about each version. this is a VERY bare bones run through-basically a snapshot and a sentence. for those like me who just came into traktor in the past year, this article doesnt really tell me all that much. great idea, not so great follow through. but its still cool to see the past gui’s!

You forgot the first Traktor FS version, it was under linux. Back then, I bought it, use it (damn, it was never ending battle with the faulty scratch amp), than we got the Windows version 1.5. Memories… After all that years I went trough all the Traktor versions, still on DVS train, still using Native Instruments software, and will gladly pay for T2 update!

    how i cam to djing:
I downloaded the Demo of Traktor Pro and fell directly in love. Soon it became difficult to use traktor just with mouse and keyboard and so I bought my first midi-controller (Hercules ROFL WTF?!)
6 months later it had to be a VCI 100 SE and so on.
Can’t wait till April. I hope it’s not an April fool’s joke 😉

    thanks to ean!

An ad?? I think it’s nice to look back at the previous versions and take a look at how the system has developed over the years. It’s sort of a celebration of Traktor evloving into what it is today. 🙂
And since T2 was just released it’s pretty timely aswell…

I really don’t think that his comment should be flagged. All he did was say that he thought it was an ad. Even though I don’t really agree with him he did not say anything offensive or out of line. This is the type of thing that does not need to start happening. Let all voices be heard unless it is really a distasteful comment. What is going to start happening is that anything said against the site or traktor will be flagged.

NOTICE THAT NO OTHER SITES THAT I GO TO HAVE THIS ISSUE. They let everyone say what they want.

I agree.. his post shouldnt have been flagged. People should still have a voice and opinion.

I think “members” of the techtools community should be able to decide if an issue should be addressed on the thread. This new thing about Techtools is this and techtools is that.

The dude had a somewhat valid argument. Even if he was wrong. And I took it personal. But I think that there was a valid rebuttal.

Not sure if he was just trolling or not but to Flag his comment kinda makes him right…….

And Im not giving my VCI up that easy!

An ad???? are you serious. what other site can you go on and get the amount of information that this site brings? Going down hill?? how long have you been on this site brother?? This site is more spot on with it’s variety of information and has never changed since i have been on here (which is quite a while)

m not trying to start a battle between you but if your down for an intelligent argument then lets do it.

Name one site with the wealth of information that this sight brings to the table

Provide just one example of any other source of information that is “dedicated” to DVS/MIDI that trumps TECHTOOLS

Where on the internet or professional school can you get educated on how to Design, Build, Map, and perform on your own Midi Controller? …….. For Free…..

This front page that you log onto is just the start. Behind those small links up top are a wealth of information, knowledge, and wisdom.

My friend have you had the chance to explore the FORUM??

Name one site that has a place to meet such an open minded group of people. Dedicated to DVS/Midi.

I have had many personal convo’s with the people that started this Web site….. I am in no way somebody special….. I just goes to show what kind of people that we are dealing with.

So bro like I said man. If you would like an intelligent argument about why you think this site throws up nothing but ADS and that it is GOING DOWN HILL. Lets hear it. No need for name calling or personal blows. If you can convince me, and who ever reads this post, That there is anything that even comes close to this Library of controller goodness.

Not only will I apologize but I SWEAR (to all who is witness) Ill send you my VCI 100se (that I got all the info to Upgrade, Map and Perform right here on DJTECHTOOLS.com.)

      I’m serious!

See because I know longer need it. Im buying the APC40 and i’ll use it with my Kontrol X1. Which im kinda excited about…. because Im goin to RE-MAP the entire set up to control “EVERYTHING” inside Traktor 2. Seems hard but …… It was crazy man! I stumbled upon this site a while back….. Its called DJTECHTOOLS

so what exactly is this an ad for? To me, as a Traktor user, it was very interesting to look back at all the old versions and see the development of the software. I first started DJ’ing in 1999 with a discman, a home CD player, and a radio shack mixer. So it was a big deal to upgrade to a couple 1200s and Final Scratch 1… I can’t believe it’s been a decade since then! I agree, this is kind of a silly article to have up here, but it definitely made me feel nostalgic, so thanks for that 🙂

And I am sure you and Native-Instruments had a great “conversation” about how this is advertisement; I bet they even told you how much they paid Ean and DJ TechTools for it. Confidentiality and corprate privacy agreements be damned. (I am being sarcastic)

At least I have the balls to be a part of the community rather than a cancer to it. I’ve written 3 different columns on how to DJ for this site, all of which have gotten pretty high accolades from the community about how helpful they have been, so I am fairly certain I “know how to DJ.”

As for getting Gigs, I work all across the country and even internationally. I have steady appearances at clubs locally in Chicago. So getting gigs isn’t a problem for me.

Awesome post! I gave up Serato for T3 Scratch back in the day and not looked back since… Now I play with controllers and DVS, learnt so much from Tech Tools!

    Keep up the great work!

  • Taz

Its interesting for me to see the time line of Traktor and think back to how things were with me. When the first version came out I was just barely getting into DJing with 1200’s and vinyl. When the second version came out I’d heard about DJing using a computer and thought no way anyone serious about it will use a computer to DJ. By the time the third installment came out I’d heard about some people using software I laughed and “thumbed my nose at them” and said there will only be ONE way to really DJ. Around the time DJ Studio 3 came out I was needing something to use while on the go and gave the DJ software a shot. I’ve since continued to use Traktor equally with vinyl and have learned there is no ONE way… can’t wait to get my hands on T2

  • Sashasolo

This to this day is been the software of choice for me! I used all versions and I think TP2 will kick some butt! Can’t wait to try it out in the club!

On a more serious note, It sux that TP1 users will have to shell out cash in order to upgrade! Not very fair NI!

But hey life is not fare sometimes, what gonna do!

    Happy Mixxxing!

  • FTW

Oh man, awesome I’ve used every single one of these haha. I went to Serato after i had final scratch since I had many a problem with it. Traktor has come a long long way since then, and is once again my weapon of choice. Can’t wait to get my hands on TSP2.

I was an original Final Scratch user, initially drawn to it because it was available on BeOS only. Then when Stanton got involved, it was ported to Linux. The next version was this abomination that was a Windows app running under WINE on Linux.

It has certainly come along way since those days …

ya i actually got the very first Final Scratch system from N2IT that shipped out to the USA. $3000 bucks. It came with a Sony Viao Laptop and the Software ran on the BEOS operating system. I actually had to call N2IT and explain to them that they needed to create an import function to grab the ID3 tags from MP3 files into their Final Scratch Library database. I wish that this story would have covered the entire history… not just the Native Instruments portion.

As awesome as Pro is, it’s a shame some of the features they’ve lost over the years – particularly OSC support (I remember spending days hacking together software to convert OSC to MIDI to make up for the lack of MIDI out in T2… and OSC support would be really relevant now with controllers such as TouchOSC out there), the master effect in T3 (just remember how awesome it was coming from 2.6 and getting those effects! Having a master one was really useful at times) and the unquantized beatmasher in T3.

Looking back, I think T3 is my favourite version so far in a lot of ways, I loved the flexibility and UI customization options which have since disappeared. I can see how it was over-complicated for a lot of users though.

First. Sorry, never done that before. 🙂
I’d never seen the GUI for Traktor 1. Sure has come a long way.
