ReLoop Contour Controller Reviewed

If you’re looking for a slim line controller that is well built and offers a wide range of controls, there are surprisingly few options on the market. The ReLoop “contour” offers such a controller embedded with a host of controls without breaking the bank. Continue reading for a full review, including pro’s and a few con’s you will want to know from contributing writer, Michael O’hagen.

ReLoop Contour Review

By: Michael O’hagan

Price: $299 W/O sound card, $399 W sound card

Communication: MIDI over USB

Available: Now

Ships with: Traktor LE

The Good

  • The metal housing  is very solid to the touch.
  • All parts are high quality, feel good to the hand and play responsively.
  • LED’s are bright and very bold even in daylight.
  • All encoders double as push-buttons for dual control from a single knob (on-off w/ wet-dry).
  • The audio interface is solid and good enough quality for public performance with no concerns about output quality. 10 outs total with a high quality and hot level output signal.
  • Most deck controls you need in Traktor are provided.

The Bad

  • All Encoders are indented and click when turned. They also only send 3F/41 messages, which can limit their use outside of Traktor.
  • LED button & encoder feedback is software dependent. Unless your software is driving the LED messages they do not work.
  • Audio interface edition MUST be wall powered (USB power is fine for the controller edition).
  • The 4 FX mini faders are really short, about 1” total
  • There is NO DEDICATED PITCH FADER! This is biggest downside to the units overall layout.
  • Although it’s sturdy the unit is heavy.
  • Fairly cramped layout.
  • With the release of T pro 2 pending, many new features are not supported.

The Bottom Line

Overall I really like this controller, it is well built and responsive with a lot of control for the money. It’s not perfect, but I have to say that it’s very good in many areas and provides a lot of control possibilities. The physical housing is metal and solid but a little heavy, so it’s a trade off between build quality and durability vs. convenience and affordability. The layout is sensible and traditional, so everything is where you’d expect it to be. The only real problem I experienced is that it can feel tight and cramped when using side by side controls.

DIGGING INTO THE DETAILS

There are 4 main types of shift commands coded directly into the hardware unit itself. These do not require modifiers in Traktor or any other software as the shift action and outgoing messages are all built directly into the unit.

  • 1 sectional shift that adjusts the platter and transport section.
  • 2 cue point modes for 1-4 and 5-8.
  • Deck shift buttons, top right corner of unit, A,B,C,D – these send out all new MIDI messages per deck.
  • 4 jog wheel modes.

The four internal controller decks are hard coded channel shifts (A=Ch1, B=Ch2, C=Ch3, D=Ch4) so they will still work with a software that does not offer modifier assignments like Traktor, this allows the full use of all of its controls with any software. Then there are four buttons offering five jog wheel modes directly above the jog wheel labeled Scratch, Pitch Bend, Search and Trax. Each button will glow blue when selected and represents a platter mode with hardware based changes in MIDI messages.

There are a lot of overlapping page and template based controls on this unit, so it can be a lot to remember or keep track of. It should also be noted that some of the shift buttons send out their own MIDI commands. For example, the cue point and platter shifts send out their own midi messages as well as shifting the associated controls on the hardware.

This could potentially be used to set up conditional modifiers in Traktor such as loading a specific set of FX when selecting a specific group of cue points.

  • The 32 semi-rubberized buttons (20 usable) are hard plastic tops with soft touch response and a click point activation with good response.
  • All encoders double as push-buttons for dual control from a single knob (on-off w/ wet-dry).
  • The jog wheel is the same quality/feel as most other re-loop dj products. It is low profile and has a surprisingly smooth feel/action.

All in all the Contour from Reloop is a great little controller that might just be right for you or could be very wrong, depending on your style. It all depends on what you want and need out of you MIDI controller and how you intend to use it. This controller assumes that you will also have mixer that takes care of the basic mixing, cueing functions or the controller might be used as an auxiliary deck for an S4.

Detailed Features:

  • 40 direct physical usable controls on each of the 4 banks.
  • 4 faders, 7 push-button encoders, 2 rotary knobs w/ center reset indentation and messages.
  • 32 semi-rubberized buttons (20 usable), they are hard plastic tops with soft touch response and a click
  • point activation with good response.
  • 1 touch-sensitive jog wheel.
  • All buttons are backlit and the encoders have LED feedback.
  • Kensington lock port
  • 2 physical headphones connections (6.3 mm & 3.5 mm jacks)
  • metal chassis with brushed aluminum top plate
  • 4 deck controller optimized for Traktor
  • Integrated hi-speed 10 channel USB PRO 24 bit / 96 kHz audio interface
  • External mixer mode: Up to 4 stereo channels can be routed to an external mixer
  • All buttons backlit, encoders with feedback LEDs
  • Software controlled feedback LED buttons for visual control
  • Traktor Ready: Plug ‘n’ Play compatible

can i use this as a soundcard for timecode vinyl??

  • Aaron Schreier

Can I assign this one controller to interact with both A and B decks?
Or do I need to buy two in order to have full control over my traktor decks?

for those who do not like DJTT just leave, this is a dj website NOT a grammar english class, DJTT has the best information out there

  • Erkronmaster

Is anyone here going to comment on the reloop controller? I found pretty much no feedback on the article topic. Let’s go to other sites to learn grammar please.

  • Modernsound1

I learn a great deal more from those articles then simply discourage the guy on his orthograph. It could certainly improve on It, but his content is far more beneficial then the common errors.

  • lokey

How smooth are the faders? Stiff or buttery?

  • M.Hugh

I’ve been a member since 2008, and I find this grammar issue quite pompous. Look, we’re hear to learn about DJing NOT grammar. Give Ean a break and focus what what’s important, and that is learning how to DJ. I’m out!!!

  • ????? ????????

I was hoping to read some comments about the product over here!!.. not english stuff.. c’mon ppl

  • Batangjovi

8 instant cue point are very close..so it might be you press also one of the botton while you pressing one unlike n traktor kontro9l x1!

I’m not too sure. One thing is for certain, it looks fun with 4 of them, assuming you have a quality 4 channel mixer. More importantly, I like the idea Reloop had, taking an S4 and minimizing it, into something that has a lot of potential. I could see them wedged into a Nexus and 2000 setup, and adding a lot more to the mix. Throw it all into Traktor 2 and you could probably have an endless party. However, the pitch fader is very important, if not crucial, if you’re planning to use these as your main decks. Things could get a little hairy and you’d find yourself having a little problems with beatmatching.

Onto the other topic of discussion. I can understand where Dracwolley is coming from. If you’re reading an article from what you expect to be a professional site, then yes, you would like the grammar to be neat. As for those stating “It’s a DJ site! Who cares if the grammar’s bad or not!” Please, go shoot yourselves now. You see, a lot of you have made the DJ stereotype seem to be true. That being we are a bunch of uneducated gorillas, and to be quite honest, some of us would rather not have it like that. So for the sake of sanity, stop being idiots. As for those of you have gone as far as to write “i dun care abt the grammar bcuz its a dj site, u r all stupid.” You’re just making things worse. If you’re going to write, please make it seem as though you know what words are.

  • Lewis Fisher

Reloop are a good company and producing some quality well made equipment. Always worth checking them out if your after new gear. They might not be a well known company but their products can give the big brands a run for there money in features , build quality and price.

  • Lewis Fisher

The Denon DNSC2000 looks a better option to me and the kontrol x1 if you can do without a jog wheel.

  • tekki

Why is it a bad thing that there isn’t a pitchfader?

Really, an endless rotary for pitch/tempo > pitchfader anytime!

  • JSM (Barcelona)

I have two points to make

    1) When writing something for the public domain, it’s fair to say that spelling and grammar must be corrected before publishing.

After all you wouldn’t want a DJ in your local club to do half a job, leaving a mix unfinished would you ?

    2) A head to head with the Denon SC-2000, Contour, DJTECH Kontrol One and the NI X1 would be welcomed here. I have two SC-2000’s and I love them .. but it would be nice to know I made the correct decision.

  • Muffinman428

sombody cut that dudes ip kick him. The gear on the othe hand is pretty cool but i still like Kontrol X1 NI baby.

  • Aegus

If you were paying a monthly subscription to view this, then yes, you have every right. But since your on hear for free (pun intended)…….then go S#$% a D!$% 🙂

Thanks Ean, keep up the great work!!!

  • Jack D. Darkster

I want Native Instruments to cut off one of the decks and sell that as a add on unit to work with separate mixers. I just want a dedicated channel C and D for my S4 but there isn’t much being offered for that. I might just go with 2 X1s.

  • bigbarcelona23

Are you freaking kidding me??? This is a Dj website and not an English class. It is funny how some of this individuals are critizicing the spelling and grammer of the content, but if DJ Tech Tools were to charge for their services for this page, I wonder if this same individuals would pay a dime to access this website??? Then again, I wonder if they would go as far as putting the effort and work that it’s put on this site???

So what if the grammer and the spelling is bad??? Compare to a lot of other forums that I go to, this minimal complaint is absolutely pointless because some of you are complaining about something that is very minimal and quite frankly not much of an issue, except a few individuals that have nothing better to do except to complaint and bring the work down that this guys are willing to provide to all of us for free. Whether you know it or not, this info helps all of us and the tiny grammatical errors are really not important, because their work shines upon such tiny mistakes.

The point being here is simple: read the articles, enjoy the information and the only time there needs to be some corrections, is when they provide us with the wrong terms or the wrong info about products or even topics that are related to this genre.

Anything else is completely irrelevant and the majority of us don’t care!

Don’t like the spelling???? You know… some of you don’t really have to stick around. Even though Ean would not appreciate what I’m about to say… you can always go somewhere else. Trust me… some of us could careless if you are here or not.

      If I may…

First, I found it more and more annoying as I read your comment, that being the multiple question marks. I mean how many do you have to use?????

Second, you say that the majority don’t care. I’m pretty sure that most people, when they sit down to read something that is supposed to be written in a professional manner they expect the text to be written with grammatical structure. If you came onto this site and read “i liek teh reloop bcuz its kool” and the rest of the article was written like that, would you read it? Would you take time to understand it???? No, you would go to another site where it would be grammatically correct. Most likely because it makes the writer seem illiterate, or just flat out stupid.

  • nice_article.

nice article. i’ve been very interested in reloop lately as they are pushing out quality gear. how about a review of the denon DN-SC2000 kit? and possibly a comparison of the two?

Finally! A djtt review with pros/cons. Thanks for the ‘fair & balanced’ review. The last djtt reviews read more like infomercials.

I’m not sure where I could put this in with my DVS set-up… still a cool controller though, I think there could be a market for it, but just not for me. Real bummer though that its not T2 compatible. If I were in the market for this type of tool, that would kill my decision to get it.

On the whole grammar subject, I really do hope they understand that this website lacks advertisements, which is extremely refreshing. Hiring an editor would solve this problem, but at what cost? I think the majority of the readers rather have a lack of advertisement than perfect spelling/grammar.

So hopefully if this website does give into advertisement. It’s for the benefit of the education that this site gives its readers and not just for the sake of “professionalism”.

i personally like the fact that there is no pitch fader. I think having a pitchfader on a multiple channel deck is a pain. Sure when i have a track setup correctly i never have to touch the fader again but still when u leave track a running change the pitchfader for track b get back to a and by accident touch the fader so it changes the pitch radically is a major pain in my eyes.

Having endless rotaries solves this problem in my eyes. I really like the rotaries. A&H got it right as well with the DX. no pitchfader.

about the ControllerEdition, yeah the soundcard needs power. But so does the new audio10 from NI

I’m sorry guys, I might have to leave DJ TechTools fairly soon, simply because of the dreadful grammar in these articles. It would be acceptable if I were reading a fourth grader’s English essay, but improper uses of your/you’re (from the article: “If your looking” actually says that “looking” is something that belongs to you. “You’re,” a contraction of “you are,” would solve this problem) really make me cringe. It is indeed very hard to read for me.

A couple more examples of horrible grammatical errors from the article:
“Although its sturdy the unit is heavy.”
What were you thinking? “Its” refers to something that belongs to “it,” and that makes the sentence useless. Add an apostrophe and “Its” becomes “It is,” and add a comma after “sturdy” and the sentence can actually be read with ease! Who would have ever thought?

“The physical housing is metal and solid but a little heavy, so it’s a trade off between build quality and durability Vs. convenience and affordability.”
I won’t go into detail for this one, but notice how much easier the following sentence is to read, while still maintaining the information originally presented (apart from “build quality” and “affordability” because they have nothing directly to do with having a metal housing).
“The metal enclosure is sturdy, but slightly heavy, so you will have to trade durability for convenience.”

I’m sorry if this all seems a bit much, but the countless mistakes in every one of the otherwise brilliant articles really makes them hard to read. Step it up a bit, buy a grammar book.

No, grammar check does not work… at all. Ever.

completely agree. I caught the same mistakes and cringed a little as well. If DJTT is trying to be as professional as possible, please please get a better EDITOR or PROOF READ YOUR ARTICLES. I will never forget when the DJTT site was down for a few hours and you guys put up “hens” instead of the word “hence”. Ean, YOU NEED TO PROOF READ THESE ARTICLES OR HIRE A SENIOR EDITOR TO DO THE JOB. There are educated people here who read your blog and dj only as a hobby. Please do us a favor and put quality not only in terms of substance but also presentation. Thank you. I’d appreciate if you guys at least acknowledge this comment with a reply. That way we know you’ve read this and have it in mind.

ha ha thanks for the humour…”There are educated people here who read your blog and dj only as a hobby”.

Just read below, most so called DJs don’t give a damn about grammar, so yes… that’s kind of true

I’m not even a native english speaker, in fact I don’t speak english very often, but I was able to spot all those mistakes as well… “your” instead of “you’re”??!!

Ean has written the last three articles, why don’t you submit something so he has more time to review his. DJTT is a small company that has little funding (no ads and most of the people who use the site don’t even own their products). Give them a break.

Also, they’ve had a hiring ad up for decades asking for editors. Quit whining about free online article’s grammar. Excuse any grammar mistakes, I’m on my iPad in the middle of a boring math class.

      Have to agree with this.

Although I gave up a long time ago pointing out your and you’re mistakes on DJTT articles. It just looks unprofessional. I know the majority of people on the internet don’t seem to know the difference between the two words but if you’re running professional blog like DJTT then you really should get someone to proof read these articles. Magazine writers do it and so should internet reviewers!

I see no reason why internet articles should be lax when it comes to spelling and grammar.

User commenter’s on the other hand can write how they want. Although I really hope you write properly for any school/college/university/professional work you have.

        • The D.

You are correct, because he’s made it possessive, and not plural, as intended.

The apostrophe, it bedevils so many.

At the same time, I can find these errors every day in the New York Times. Rather than bemoan it with such vigor, one may just have to accept it as another sign of the impending apocalypse. And keep mixing good music, of course.

I’ll have to take responsibility for those silly spelling errors, they slipped by me this time. I do apologize for making you “cringe”. All though, if this makes you cringe, I’m afraid what will actually tip you over the edge. Chill?

Thanks for pointing out the errors though, I appreciate that and will do my best to be better in the future.

Emil you are not here for your grammar skills. Please do not apologise. I have never been to any club that has required patrons to pass a grammar test. You are doing a great job…sent from the jungles of PNG, I am very isolated here, and your site is GREAT.

    • Rynaldo

🙂 Well… I am Dutch, so the fact that Ean is not helping me to get my Englisch grammar up to a higher level as a DJ is sad. However, as I am more interested in the gear and tips & trics, I can live with it.

🙂 Well… I am Dutch, so the fact that Ean is not helping me to get my Englisch grammar up to a higher level as a DJ is sad. However, as I am more interested in the gear and tips & trics, I can live with it.

Sigh, must there always be someone to comment on the grammar on every article on the internet. Yes this could have used some proof reading, but it’s a free article on a free web site that provides a lot of free and valuable information. If your/you’re and its/it’s mistakes cause you to leave, bye.

I do get your point but lets be honest, I bet only 1 out of every 100 people will actually give a shit. I personally won’t be losing any sleep over poor grammar but my thoughts are with you and I hope you’ll get through the rest of the week.

Thanks Ean. I love DJTT,it has helped me greatly in my purchases and in expanding my skills, and my fellow DJs here are right, this is about DJing, not grammar 🙂

Screw grammer Ean. I can read what you are writing very well with the grammer mistakes and I think only a 5th grade grammer teacher, not a DJ or wantabe DJ would give a hoot if it is “Its” or “It’s”. Just keep up the good work. Perfection is for idiots, because there is no such thing.

“Its” not how it is written that is important, “its” what is being said. I don’t think I could even read to comprehend and also pick out mistakes at the same time.

Ean, Your articles and tips are great. Grammar though important to many, DJs included and whether educated or not,(I am educated, have 2 degrees and working on a 3rd make many grammatical errors) for the purposes relevant here does not make much difference to most of us. Myself included. See my reply to Dracwolley.

My advice at this point, put the whiners in the corner, keep up the good work, don’t waste the money on another unnecessary expense of hiring an outside proofreader.

Remember you are giving freely and we truly appreciate it. I try to show my support by recommending your site, products and when my budget allows will also purchase your products.

        Thank you,

You are correct about your and you’re but you are incorrect about its and it’s. Sorry smart guy. “It’s” is the possessive and “its” is a contraction for it is.

      • Willrj Marshall

You’ve got that backwards. It’s = it is.

        Its = possessive of it.

Don’t get me wrong guys, I love the site to death, and its writers as well because it’s so down-to-earth and informative. I own a few of their accessories and things and check back here daily and always get great things in return. I was indeed being much too harsh with that comment, but This article really made me think a little differenty about the website. I do realize that you guys are putting your best efforts into this and I actually sincerely apologize for the mood of the comment above.

However, I am not going to “go fuck myself” just because I posted a comment when I was in a bad mood. I don’t go around trolling about grammar errors on websites and I certainly didn’t have an evil grin when writing this, but for some odd reason I felt the urge to post about this.

So please accept my apology, guys, and deal with the fact that I will be staying and NOT making more comments like this. It was just blatantly out of line, and I alone am to blame.

      • R3 Bonaire

I love the articles and who cares [besides you] if there may be a few grammatical errors (and, my grammar sucks too) none the less ‘you’ nor your comment (or mine) are not relevant to the product review.

Noting your comment on the “Although its sturdy the unit is heavy.” is asinine. And, no your sentence is not easier to read and goes beyond what was intended to be stated. Irrelevance related by rambling complication? Your impression or opinion is stated as a trade-off not based on knowledge or lack there of.

It [the product] can be sturdy and heavy or sturdy and light depending on material composition and internal build. I would have to believe you know little to nothing of product design, the the physics of material compositions in manufacturing, or implied build perception.

Titanium equals sturdy and extremely light whereas high-carbon or nickle steel would equal very heavy also being sturdy. Which one is which?

Maybe you’re and English major, just like to pick at things, or are just a (place descriptive adjective here).

Leave DJ Tech Tools, it will be a better place without your continuous whining. Besides, you really don’t sound like you’re a DJ.

Congrats Mr. Grammar. Have fun grading papers the rest of your life ass-wipe. Or is the word pompous ? I prefer gasbag or blow-hard. Come to think of it, ass-wipe suits you best.

    • Dillinger23

      jeez man.. rilly?????????

(I say this as ex English teacher.. and don’t read too deeply between the lines, you may miss the intentional irony)

You may find the Washington Post or the London Times a better read grammatically, but I doubt there insight (spot that one did you?) into digital djing and the minutiae of midi mapping will be quite as enlightening. Why not just accept that different folks have different strengths that cab be played to. William Faulkner span a mean pun, but couldn’t spin a wheel of steel to save his f***ing life. Doesn’t mean he wasn’t awesome in his own field, just not a great DJ. I do have an answer which should make everyone happy. Admittedly there (spot that one?) grammar is far from perfect, so why don’t you volunteer your (WOOHOO, GOT IT RIGHT!) not inconsiderable language skills pro bono, as a copy editor? Don’t be part of the problem my man, be part of the solution!

I own both the interface edition and the midi (just edition). and use them together with a pioneer djm 2000 mixer.

I really like them as the feel ‘tough and heavy’.
What I really ‘dig’ is the faders, connected to the FX, where I now can work really really fast.
The sound interface is stable. and performs excellent.

    Only complaint.
the cue point buttons are placed so that I to often press and accidential creates numerous unintended cuepoints in a song, during the heat of the battle.

A quick look at the online manual shows that the LEDs *can* be controlled by midi, so they aren’t software dependent through some kind of HID or driver scheme.

“LED button & encoder feedback is software dependent. Unless your software is driving the LED messages they do not work.”

Which means if for instance your using SSL that doesn’t support midi output then you will have no lights, hence the phrase “software dependent”.

This looks like a great piece of kit, I just haven’t been able to get my hands on one yet to try it out. Up until recently they weren’t being distributed directly in the states. Compared to the Denon unit, I think the contour has a much more logical layout and offers a great deal more controls. I’m fine with remapping a rotary encoder for pitch control instead of a slider.

When the new version of traktor drops I’d expect some mappings to use those short faders and the buttons just below them for some C/D loopers or sample players (whatever they’re called).

HOWEVER, if you can’t control the LED’s with midi messages (sysex or normal) that’s a deal breaker. 🙁

Yeah I realise I could go find it (which I did), I just wanted to point out that this review is missing a key piece of information.

To be honest I think I’d rather have pitch mapped to an endless encoder on a controller such as this one. An effective pitch fader would have to be very large and have a high resolution and would require the controller to be substantially larger.

At the very least, the question is how the Reloop compares to the SC2000. The most striking difference is, of course, the pitchfader (or lack thereof). But it’d be interesting to read about other differences as well.

I always liked Reloop products, but this seems to be a NI Kontrol X1 on steroids; the no pitch control can be a pain. I do like the size. I guess it can be a +1 in the portable market…. And when I mean portable- I mean portable like pocket portable.

    • Marc Bannink

the X1 doesnt have a pitchfader.. next to that searching through the track was a pain as well. Using the big jog on the contour you can navigate to the right spot in a track. When using the X1 to me it looked impossible. The X1 uses big steps when navigating through the track.
I’ve had the X1 for a few days and quickly sent it back.

But then again… even in HID mode, you can always change the midi mapping of the X1 and make it behave like you want. I changed the track search mode in a smooth large step search and a fine detailed seacrh mode. Works perfect.

        • Marc Bannink

maybe i should have played with it a little bit more. but i just didnt feel the X1, i do feel the contour 🙂
