Mix Techniques: Blending Swings

Today we follow up last month’s successful article on dancing with a more in-depth look at mixing various types of rhythmic styles together. In the video above, I go into detail on recognizing swing differences and then five techniques to smoothly and effectively switch between different rhythmic styles in both house and hip-hop. The mapping used in the video is our Midi-Fighter deckalized layout for Traktor Pro and is available as a free download here.

Curious… can you assign the timing of one track’s effect to another track’s BPM?

  • MOYMA

its cool that hiphop got covered as well. It takes some thought to put hiphop together…and scratching can really help. Cool tee…I used to ride a Vision Street Wear Jinx Board.

It would be nice if you could name the tracks that you are using.
that way people can practice easier, because they can try and replicate what you do in the video

    • Diegojacobs

exuse me, i now see that you can get the titles from the video itself

hello. I am an unknown trance music producer. will u be willing to do a video attempting to mix some of my tracks? i am very interested to see how u can mix my beats. If you are here is a link to one of my songs:

if u need the mp3 i can send. Pretty please?

  • Caueito

Great job DJ TT! Amazing how I keep coming back and always learning something new. 5stars. out of the box

  • Me

id like also some tutorials what you can do with effects not in traktor or serato but with a mixer like the pioneer djm 800 which is in most of the clubs nowadays, there should be a lot of tricks!

    • Dur

lol DJM 800 tricks…. If your effects sound amatuer on a DJM series mixer its 9 times out of 10 because you arent triggering them in time… you dont need a goldenshower video you need PRACTICE

      • Me

naw, im not talkin it doesnt sound but what tricks are possible and i think there are a lot possibilities, e.g. you can connect effects or you can use the roll effect for loops and swap channels, i dont think all ideas you can learn with practice when u dont know what to practice…

Sittin down again and again to THIS TUTORIAL FROM A STAND UP GUY! THANK YOU EAN! Great stuff man.

  • Extraclassic

I like how the original You tube screen shot has been changed from the open mouthed Golden to the side shot Golden.

    good decision.

  • SamBenDavid aka DJew

@Ean….in the video when you mixed killer mike into black barbie….that was lovely 🙂

  • Gbrown44

Ean… I noticed when you loaded the first track to mix with Cash Rules that your grid marker wasn’t quite on the grid (or not at the start of the beat… there was air between the beat start and the marker) and was wondering if you have a best practice as to “where” you actually drop certain markers…

    thanks

  • Dj UTU

I would very much wanted to see what this article held inside, but because it is mostly just in the video, I was unable to … Ean, please remember us roadwarriors in Bali, we have extreamely limited bandwidth 🙂

I’m taking off my hat, folding it tightly, putting it in a small box and shipping it to Ean…

Now, I don’t mean to tear someone apart here, but I think it would be important to explain what you mean by swing. Swing, by technical definition, is the sub-division of rhythm into ODD numbers, not just even. Swing, typically describes a track where the 8th note falls on the third beat of a triplet. This is also why swing is called triplet feel.

Mixing tracks with different swings is actually much more difficult than Ean describes here, but considering that none of the tracks he played have any type of swing in them it doesn’t matter. Also, because there are so few electronic/pop music tracks with swing that you rarely have to deal with it.

I think what Ean is try to describe here is groove or feel. This has to do with where the rhythmic accents fall on a track rather than how they are subdivide.

Of course, this is not the only way of defining these terms because a program like Ableton uses the word Groove to describe Swing (by my definition) and there is no accentuation taken into account.

I think a better explanation of swing needs to be posted. I would be happy to film a video.

    Matthew

    • FDRK

      Looking forward to it…
And please dumb it down for us laymen.

    • Anthonyjacobs

“I think a better explanation of swing needs to be posted.” I think you just did good sir. Thank you for bringing up that clarification, that is my definition of swing and groove as well.

    • Load:Vader

I was like “… This isn’t actually swing.” as well haha

  • DJ

What stand are you using for your computer?

  • Scandal

At first I was a little thrown off at how fast you breezed through some of the techniques.. I then saw you posted a basics a couple months back. I get a feeling like you’re trying to feed the ‘I want more advanced stuff’ trolls.. Don’t let that change how you present it though. You take your time in the beat gridding videos and what not, so don’t let them affect how you talk about the more advanced stuff. For instance the freeze echo mix sounds pretty cool.. But even as a traktor owner I’m not exactly sure how you did that. Keep it up, but don’t be afraid to explain yourself.

    • Dur

get a feeling like you’re trying to feed the ‘I want more advanced stuff’ trolls..

They made the choice to pander to beginners (usually only beginners WANT/adore controllers in the USA) along time ago…

But even then you have to assume your targeted audience develops and progresses overtime. Because if they don’t.. they haven’t learned anything from you. Sounds like your behind the sync squad curve.

  • Jauhn Schneck

Damn i wanna know how you got them colors but thanks to another comment i realized that might be T2 , WTF !!!!!

  • Marco F

This was great! I really dig these types of tutorials on mixing and how to use effects properly! Keep it coming, Ean!

  • Dodger

Nice vid Ean. Short, to the point, couple of different items covered, all good.

  • Can't wait for T2

quit showing off T2 and share the Demo with DJTT community, you selfish jesus wannabe!!!

  • Djf0tif0

Hehehe what are those numbers below adidas track ?
I think i know what they are anyone else :))))

    • Quintero

      hahaha, nice job there detective.

    • Mavi

Looks as if I wasn’t the only one to notice this.

    • Djdraco1

Looked like somethin you’d get on a windows error.

    • FDRK

      Maybe it’s a Traktor Pro 2 bug?
“Oh crap! Did we put the cue point info in the MP3 title field again??”

    • random dj

It’s iTunes info most likely. iTunes has the nasty habit of putting those hex values into comment fields (or at least they tend to bleed into comments) for volume and other info.

I think that a more complete tutorial must be done to the most basic level. Before effects, before sampling, before Traktor specific functions overall, there must be a tutorial that breaks it down in the most basic element and that is what happens in the mixer. What was explained in the first part of the video, the bit about dropping the bass etc, while it is known for more experienced DJs, its the beginners (most users on DJTT) that ignore that or simply need a more technical know how in how the mixer work. Im sure also the pros around here will also learn a couple new tricks too.

Good thing about such tutorial is that any kind of DJ can benefit from it regardless of what they use from Traktor to Serato to good ol’ Vinyl. Dont take for granted we all are masters of the proper use of the mixer and the technicalities that go into how to make it sound better.

Another thing is that some DJs, myself included, like, or at least try, to play different styles of music. I would love to know how to beatmatch different tempo songs and while yeah in the breakdown seems the obvious answer, there obviously must be other technics to make it a more seamless and realy show talent in that department becasue a lot of DJs will tell you right off the bat “it cant be done”.

Also Ean could be more vocal about what hes doing while hes doing it. I was watching this clip with a mate and while he could understand what Ean said, I was more lost and my mate had to brake it down and explain the bit that happened. Kinda like “I do this becasue bla bla”. Try to break it down just a bit more. Just like the S4 tutorial that brakes all the functions and make examples, A more basic “to the core” tutorial could be done in the same fashion.

    Overall nice tutorial. .

  • LALA

Nice video, but please use a tripod next time. On a big screen its wobbling all the time. Keep it up !

    • Adexcgvr

Better seen in the S4 tutorial video where the cameraman seems drunk or something.

  • Dean

    excellent….THANKS

  • Kobb

Best part of the tutorial = DJTT-logo sound in the end matches the beat of the track being played.

Yo dawg, I heard you like to mix, so we put a clip of Ean Golden mixing in the mix so you can hear him mix while he mixes.

  • sebastiannz

interesting tutorial. would also enjoy some more tutorials on rhythm mixing techniques. compared to key mixing and how to mix different styles, rhythm mixing seems to get far less attention. and yet it is really important for the dancefloor.

    • Adexcgvr

      What he said.

  • Chris

    What songs were you using?

    • alfredo

Awesome tips. I’m glad to see these videos where you tailor to several types of DJ’s and controllerists not just one or the other. Thanks!

    • Adexcgvr

      exactly!

  • DJ Remco

    Another nice tutorial!
