Dj Shiftee’s Technological Turntablism Tabernacle

Greetings, DJ TechTools.  My name is DJ Shiftee.  Don’t believe me? Check my birth certificate!  Signed and sealed by the state of New York – DJ Morris Shiftee (my middle name is Morris). It seems we have a common passion, DJ Tech Tools.  We both love Tech.  Yes, this infatuation is mainly because Tech is an excellent abbreviation for Technology, but we also love Technology, so everyone goes home a winner. I will be contributing semi-regular (read: every month or so) tutorials on some of my favorite technologically infused performance tricks in a new series: Shiftee’s Technological Turntablism Tabernacle.

Here’s the first installment: a technique I affectionately call “Plooping.”

The preference options for controller manager seem to be different in 2.5. Do you know where they are hiding the Cue/Loops options now please? having difficulty finding them.

  • JhelaPeh Atatalyc

Wow an amazing guy! What a tutorial, get him to do more. had no idea you could do that, great video. He is the geek who got famous of djing ;; he got mad skils.. still find him really weird tho tbh. i told my mother i spent all day plopping, she looked disappointed. I’d never think of that!!!! thanx even though you’re not gonna read this! :D:D

I was laughing to much the first time I watched this to gather any info, then I watched again and plooped everywhere. Also made a plooped dubstep beat.

Plooping is such a refined word for such a distinct technique! You can see some serious branding-effort has gone into this!

I’m thinking you could assign the initial loop length to a superknob which also sets the loop.

“Check the writing style of Gizmodo (tech blog) how do it tastefully.”

Gizmodo and tastefully should never be used in the same sentence. Not like they’d know what it means anyways. It’s insulting to compare this site to anything on the shitshow that is gawker.

Anyways, good article, and I’m looking forward to more contributions from Shiftee.

I think this very well means a new way of writing articles. Make it fun and make it useful. They are already useful but they could definetly be more fun. DJ, club, music, dancing. all fun stuff. Adapt the fun vibe to a purely objective arcicle and BAM! fun entertaining reading!

You dont have to be a pro comic writer, simply write and try to explain things with stuff people can relate to like pop simbols. Check the writing style of Gizmodo (tech blog) how do it tastefully. You dont need to go to the extends of geekologie (sort of tech blog) but writing style is a must!

This may not appeal to those too-serious/why-so-serious dj’s but hey, loose that pencil you are holding betweeen your butt-cheeks and understand your job is to make people have fun and when you are having fun it’s easier to pass on that fun.

this isn’t anything new, and something very basic… props for a video tutorial done very well, but I feel like this is rudimentary.

    • SirchOne

couldn’t disagree with you more. may be basic, but let me know where you’re @ because he is doing this with Hip-Hop music. is your local dj mixing Hip Hop with effects like this? .. being creative on the fly?

Great video and I love Shiftee’s humour :P. BUT isn’t this pretty much the exact same thing Ean Golden posted for Native Instruments using the Kontrol X1 about a year ago?

Ean called in the Loop Synth though (not quite as funny as ‘Plooping’). Check out that video here:

Don’t get me wrong though I look forward to more of these videos in the future!

  • Balls of Steel

Cool vid. I like doing this but using the “key knob” instead of the move button to change the pitch. That way you can be really musical about it, and map the different values to a MIDI keyboard.

To get a similar effect I use semi tone key increments mapped to the key rotary, but Plooping (brilliant!) sounds a lot cleaner, thanks for the tip.

Ahhhh…by far my favorite part of any of shiftees performances, I even guessed right how to do it, almost…didn’t know about the xfine setting.

I used a kind of a similar routine last weekend at my house party just because I’m able to mess around there.

Good work shiftee! I remember seeing this for the first time in a vid and craze was like wtf in the background.

Now the trick question is how to have even finer control over which notes are produced by plooping? How to reproduce something like in One – Swedish House Mafia?
