Stuff We Like: Touchable iPad App

The first round of “DJ” apps, made a lot of people rightfully question their place in the clubs. Sure enough though, with more refined iOS features and a new breed of sophisticated music app’s emerging, we are starting to see iPads comfortably show up in clubs. In the video above, touchable shows three amazing use cases for their Ableton interface on the iPad (the club scene is last). Technically, there is nothing out of this world in the videos, but they do a great job of showcasing how iPads (and their software) can fit naturally into the music world.  Continue reading for one more examples of iPads showing up in the wild and really spreading their wings.

One of the main reasons turntables gained acceptance was their universal understanding. As iPads become more ubiquitous, and therefore  more understood, it will seem natural, almost common sense, that they should show up in a live setting.  Abstract controllers will have a hard time gaining traction without a common base of understanding, since it is fundamentally hard for the audience to really “get” what the artist is doing. My “guitar hero” performance was an experiment to see how people would react to a controller they have personally used.

Here Stephan Bozin and Marc Romboy team up with 4 iPads as control surfaces for a world tour. Skip to 4 minutes to see the club action.

You, our fair readers, have millions of eyes on the internet at all times. Have you found any note-worthy examples of iPad use in the clubs or on stage? If so, tell us in the comments! Now before I kick off a sea of angry comments, we should qualify this post. Dj TechTools is not advocating iPads replace DJ equipment which, quite frankly, is terribly unrealistic. The iPad can however play a really great role as part of many artists arsenals, augmenting other more tactile interfaces.

Has anyone here used midipads from crossfire for the ipad? What’s your take on it if you do?

If it’s on one of CSI series, it’s legit! A hot female DJ playing music with multiple iPads, a MacBook Pro, and a mixer of some sort:

This was the opening scene to an episode of CSI:NY this season. Ok so the apps in this scene aren’t real (major fail about 14 seconds in); but this concept is actually possible considering the state of iPad & Mac software & hardware today.

Spoiler alert: later in this scene she is killed; even worse several iPads are tragically broken during the murder!

For those who are talking about latency: there is absolutely 0 latency with touchAble (using a mac)!

Well, if that is the future of music, then I’d rather we go back completely to vinyls.:p

It looks nice, but I am not really impressed with the results.

To those who are discussing latency and stability issues with Wifi – jailbreak your ipad and get MyWi. One of the side effects is being able to send ipad signal over usb – I am currently using it to run TP2 via TouchOSC over wired connection through Osculator. Stable as hell & very low latency.

    • Bruiser Smith

And, PS – I use my ipad in conjunction with a Korg Zero4. All I need.

My biggest problem with this isn’t the controllerism part of it but rather the dependence on the iPad. It would be nice if these developers also made these programs available for windows tablets (which are cheaper and more functional) or for the Android platform. As long as the iPad remains the focus I think I will stick with a VCI100SE and a Launchpad.

I use Touchable with ‘The Bridge’ it’s great, it’s alot lighter and easier to carry than my APC40 and the clip names are easier to see, it does have a very very slight latency and my fingers don’t really seem to trigger touchscreens that well but all in all, it’s solid and works well! I also tied it together with bentosans smart mixer on my sends, seems to work pretty well 🙂

    Great post DJTT….

I have used the app recently and it is great….

I still find the thought of using Touchable or any iPad app that works over Wifi terribly unreliable….i mean in a live scenario would you really want to rely on an Internet connection to control your set up?

Plus….latency is always going to be a problem…i dont care how many mili-seconds i can increase ableton by it is….its still going to be higher than if my midi controller was plugged straight through to my laptop….

Just my thoughts 🙂 What does everyone think?

i use touchOSC + osculator on my mac to control mix emergency wirelessly for video DJing, and there is no latency. when I press something, it’s triggered immediately. i just make a private network from the laptop and password protect it. works every time

I think this is a really cool idea, in connection with standard knobs and faders, devices like the iPad, would make great auxiliary controllers, esp for things like beating out beats, etc…

I think we has the new DJ community, have to realize that from now on it won’t “this or that” but rather “this & that”… and we should embrace it all

I find the IPad clip launchers to be very useful. I use a color and naming system for a quick mental reference before launching clips (one track can sometimes be cut into as many as 20 parts for me). Looking at a sea of the same colored lights (Launchpad) was causing me to lose my spot forcing me to look at my computer screen more. Now, I can look at the IPad for the clip I’m looking for and launch it confidently. I do own a launchpad, and it’s still a part of my current rig, and is much more useful to me now than when I was relying on it for a clip launcher.
I think a good approach to the upcoming touch screen movement is to use it to free up your current controllers for use of things you may definitely want tactile control (example: EQing and Show Effects). We are really only in phase one of universal touch screen implementation and look at what we can already do. But, it’s just a tool folks; use it or don’t J
    My ten bucks.

The biggest problem whit the iPad as a controller is that you have to look to the screen to know what you’re doing. In my mixer I can work without looking at it.

Isn’t wifi necessary to use these Ipad apps? It seems to me that this would be a major sticking point. It doesn’t seem practical to incorporate a piece of gear into your performance workflow that you may or may not be able use depending on your wifi access at whatever small club you’re performing at. I’m completely willing to admit that I might not understand completely how these things work, though! : )

No, you don’t need wifi in the place that you’re performing. All you have to do is set up an Ad Hoc wireless network. This allows your laptop to act as its own wireless access point. You won’t be able to connect to anything on the internet of course, unless you have a mobile broadband card or tether to your mobile’s data plan, but it works just fine for creating a local network (which is all TouchOSC needs).

Hmmm Is it only me that thinks the lads are playing around with Ipads just to pretend they’re doing something?

I’m not usually the skeptical type but looking at the video (4:15 onwards) I don’t think either of them are making the music change but instead are waiting (know when) the music will change and there for are twiddling with some neat onscreen graphics.

Especially the left ‘Orb’ with the fancy pants electrical ‘connection’ between two fingers that you place on the screen. Looks like he’s just rotating his finger points in time to the note changes.

I dunno, just seems fishy imo.

With the 6th Module in TouchAble you assign the balls “or orbs” to a parameter you’d like to effect in the way represented in the video. Virtual Gravity becomes a factor, which is a pretty fun concept. I haven’t really gotten a chance to incorperate it yet, so I can’t speak of the usefullness of the 6th module; but I can testify that TouchAble itself is endlessly useful.

      • sneligan

Fair enough, I’ll have to read into it a little more. It just didn’t seem like they were changing the sound of the music that much with the program on the ipad but instead were just ‘doing stuff’ for the sake of it. Probably just me being pessimistic.

After playing around with the iPad and figuring out how I can use it musically in any way, at this stage I have decided that it’s a good creative sound module but not much use for playing with Live in any sense.

I concur with kidalex on the Midi Touch App. It’s great but I don’t know if I would mix a DJ set with it in a Live environment.

If I use Ableton I would probably use the iPad as a contoller in some way.

I just cannot get past pure hardware at this time. Maybe in the future…

I use Midi Touch on the iPad you played Angry Birds with in America, Ean 😉

It is similar to TouchOSC but in my opinion more polished and offers some Multitouch gestures.

The iPad is an addition to my regular setup and I like to control FX (KAOSS Pad style) and the sample-decks with it.

I’ll soon start working on an own app. Suggestions are welcome.
