Midi Fighter Pro Mappings

For your viewing pleasure I offer up a quick demo of two models from our new, sold out Midi Fighter Pro series. Instead of a technically complex routine, this video shows a improv exploration of the unit’s performance section that can be enjoyed by DJs and controllerists of all skill levels. The MF Pro series are built to be used as learned instruments and provide intuitive tools that can be unleashed at any moment when inspiration strikes. Just select the preset of your choice, and start working the faders to find a complex range of sounds and textures that can transform any track into your own personal sonic landscape.

CUE MASTER

The Cue Master is my personal cue point weapon of choice. The idea is that the two faders modulate cue points in a very expressive way transforming them from repetitive samples into a fresh musical palette.  For this video I have loaded an accapella of Brittney Spears “Toxic”

  • The four small buttons activate presets, which load a specific group of effects that sound great together.
  • The super faders are then mapped to those effects across the full range of the fader producing a mind-bending array of sounds.
  • The absolute left knob is for the absolutely critical filter cranking.
  • The right knob modulates the value of the fader below it.

The arcade buttons contain a special combination of the Deckalized and Instant Gratification mappings with a few important modifications:

  • The lower buttons are tied to pitch bending and tempo nudge.
  • This allows a single MF Pro to be used as a complete deck solution.
  • I personally use two of them with a mixer for a next level digital DJ rig.

BEAT MASHER

The Beat Masher was designed to take beat repeat effects into a new sonic territory and produce studio quality builds at any moment. In the example above, the crossfader engages a beat masher which is then modulated by a filter and gater on the line fader. As the two start to work in combination they play off each other producing unexpected fills and variations. Throwing the line fader to the bottom kicks in a fourth transform effect which can then be worked back up the full range of the fader!

  • Each of the four buttons load a specific group of effects that sound great together.
  • Each of the two faders are mapped to those effects across the range of the fader.
  • The faders are meant to be used at the same time with each hand.
  • They each interact with each other in relative and unpredictable ways.
  • The knob is tied to a filter for that deck.
  • Each fader automatically routes those effects to the selected deck.

The buttons contain a special combination of the Deckalized and Instant Gratification mappings with a few important modifications:

  • The lower buttons are tied to pitch bending and tempo nudge.
  • This allows a single MF Pro to be used as a complete deck solution.
  • I personally use two of them with a mixer for a next level digital DJ rig.

Even though both of these controllers are sold out at the moment, you can add yourself to a waiting list to be notified when they are available (in about four weeks)

OTHER MAPPINGS AND A DEEPER EXPLANATION

These mappings have taken months to develop and we plan on making several iterative changes from your suggestions over the coming month. We are also finalizing the XX Fader/Super knobs mapping as we speak and plan to release those in a few weeks time. Once all of these mappings are in a really stable, solid place, I will then shoot a detailed video explaining the final functions.  This should probably happen within a month, but don’t hold me to that time line as we wont stop until they are near perfection!

Hey selling my midi fighter pro cue master (barely used) if any one is interested
    info@captchastudios.co.uk

  • ManDingo

For all you haters; up yours!!! Techtools, when will you be selling the midi pros again. I, ManDingo, missed out on the first bunch!! And maybe a weeks heads-up would be nice as I would have time to ready my moneys for this purchase before they sell out again. Times are hard in this economy, so I will need to know to keep funds aside for this purchase. One week ManDingo go hungry, the next week ManDingo has money…you follow. So, if I know one week before when Midi fighter pro will arrive in store, ManDingo will go hungry for two weeks so to buy this great product.

Look, there have been many negative comments posted about the controllers and mappings discussed in this article. furthermore, a debate regarding contollerism or “DJTT kids” as a whole as opposed to traditional Dj’ing, or as opposed to various other methods of DJ’ing has been raised here and in other forums. This type of debate is counterproductive, I am not implying the DJTT should be praised at all cost’s, no, only that positive and negative comments should be focused on improving the musical process that these devices can act upon. Many people have many different skill levels and choose to use those skills musically in many different ways. This “old guard” perspective regarding DJ’ing is an example of typical human nature, people are simply resistant to change. This resistance is a defense mechanism  that is based on protecting a persons beliefs and past experiences, it is not based on expanding our techniques in creating music. Which ever medium you use in the creative process is positive. Artists use many different mediums to create art and this is also positive and this leads to new art forms or how we can create art in new and exciting ways. Using these devices and mappings can only be a good thing, the end-product can be debated based on the artist using these implements, that artist’s skill set, and the type of music that is created. That debate on the end-state is viable and is based on personal opinion and  personal opinion alone. In my opinion, Ean and the staff at DJTT are professionals and do not have any hidden agenda’s, supporting themselves financially through the products of their art form is completely legitimate and understandable. Through this website I have opened up a creative facet in my life and I am appreciative. I am not a professional DJ, I am a “bedroom DJ” ,or what I prefer, I am a contollerist, I am not a subject matter expert. What I am is a unbiased lover of music who sees that the  instruments offered here should be recognized as a positive step in the ever evolving world of creating music.

I have been a long time DJTT follower and I’m not putting down Ean’s ability in anyway by this post. But honestly, that sounded like random sounds crammed together to make as Ean puts it “audio soup.” This isnt the quality that DJTT was based on or gives to its followers and customers. I am surprised that Ean put this video up to showcase the new midi fighter pro. I was very excited to watch this to see what the Midi Fighter Pro could do but this video left me disappointed. Ean I hope you can re-do a video for the Midi Fighter Pro and showcase to your loyal followers what the Midi Fighter Pro can really do. =)

I know you love to use Traktor because of the various effects but how about a Serato Scratch Live / ITCH mapping for the Midi Fighter Pro? Maybe you know someone who can do that.
I would order one for myself and do a mapping but I am still unsure because I use Scratch Live and I am from Europe so shipping would be quite expensive.

Keep up your good work !!!

Ean, I’ve never been able to figue out how to map things to specific positions on a slider as you have done with these mappings and your Fader FX mapping. Is this controller specific? Is it not something you can do with all controllers? Is there a special type of midi signal that makes it possible? If you could clarify that would be awesome.

Also, I’m sorry for the character attack you seem to be suffering. Anyone with any sense can see how generous you are to your fans and readership. My friend always told me that if you didn’t have any haters, you were doing something wrong. So keep up the good work!

You can map any midi controller the same way. But Midi Fighters are cooler aesthetically in my opinion, and have arcade buttons which are very playable! However, the mappings on DJTT are made specifically for their products, but can be replicated if you know how to map in traktor. Hope that helps!

Djing…music… all live performance is art….someone else’s mapping that you completely lack technical understanding of…is not your art…complex midi mappings like this aren’t tools, they are artwork in themselves that serve specific artistic purposes for and by creator…So enjoy this mapping with humility, because the next DJTT kid at a venue that tries to explain how much more advanced controllers are and what a innovative performer he is despite his inexperience and complete inability to conversate about how and why to what ends etc is getting punched straight in the face.

There is no such word as “conversate” genius. It is converse, furthermore, “speak intelligently about” would be a better substitute for your misuse of vocabulary and grammar.

How does it feel to have a bunch of negativity slapped in your face for no reason, Einstein.

I agree with him honestly.  It’s okay to use these controllers and their mappings, but I wouldn’t go talking trash about how advanced they are and call using them an art (although what you make with them may be considered art).

Honestly for all I care Ean could be a pot smoking douchebag (according to the link). It doesn’t matter….. at least to me. I personally use this site as a resource for both products and ideas. Although it is a shame if all that is true. I would not doubt that quite a few people will be disappointed. I think posting that link could end up being a dick move on your part and I only say that because if enough people take it to heart, I can see this small business taking a hard turn south. Although I do commend you sir for having the cojones to post it. People should know the truth but damn…..

I want them. But as I am left handed I would imagine it would feel much more natural if the placement of everything was mirrored. What are the chances of a left handed version ever being made?  or is it going to be simple to remap them?

    • Ean Golden

good question. you could use the XX fader model, which has a lot of the values reversed for a left hand configuration or just re-map it. A lot of musicians are left handed, I will keep that in mind in the future.

Cheers for the reply Ean everyone always forgets the lefties. These are the first controllers that do exactly what I always wanted a controller to do and I cant wait to upgrade. Ill just turn em upside down and re-map so suit, The digital equivalent to Hendrix re-stringing his guitar, or like my mum learning to play a right handed guitar upside-down
