Native Instruments has announced a free Traktor Scratch Pro upgrade to all users of the S4 who register their product within the next 30 days, and to give you a little taste of why this is a good idea, they got DJ Dummy, the talented scratch DJ who rocks the decks for Common on his shows, putting an S4 DVS setup through its paces on video. We had a chat with the man himself, who took a break in the middle of a busy tour with Rihanna to take us through the routine and if the Kontrol s4 could really be a viable center of the DVS world.
At the beginning of the video, you’ll notice Dummy hitting the sample deck pads and creating a sentence of wordplay cuts. “I can have eight samples set up, which is good for me because I like to do a lot of wordplay… so I can have a continuous sentence going on from different records all already cued up in my sample decks. That’s what I was doing in the video, and then I was able to scratch on the actual sample decks – so basically I could have damn near twelve records playing at one time [It’s ten by our count (Eight sample decks plus two full decks)… we’re not arguing, it is damn near twelve! – Tech Ed] which is amazing”.

As far as how the S4 sounds? “Incredible. I do have one problem with it though, and that’s the effects… with the delay, when I put the fader down, the delay goes down, so I was like ‘eeeuuurgh..’. I had to think of a way round that…”
The next section of the video is some extremely tight beat juggling. Old habits die hard, though, and Dummy’s approach to DVS is to leave the decks in absolute mode. “I’m using [the turntables] as though I’m still on regular original vinyls” – the advantage to using the S4 as a DVS enabled mixer, then? “It’s mainly the sample decks and using the effects as well. The looping as well is a freakin’ incredible thing but I wasn’t confident to use it in the video because I was just learning at the time.”
Another thing we noticed – and loved – in the video was the body tricks. We wanted to know what the S4 feels like ergonomically for a master. “At first I was like ‘ooooh’… the size is a little bigger than what I’m used to. For me to do body tricks I like a small mixer. But why I was able to do it was because the S4 is clean where the fader is… there are no buttons or nothin’ around where the fader is, so I was like, I can get around it. It’s not too big, and to have the two jogwheels it has to be that big, but it was like I could do body tricks because the fader, and also from the channels, is a good distance. Everybody knows me as a body trick DJ, so I had to put those in to show you can still do the bodytricks on it!”

Interestingly, DJ Dummy has one more use for the S4. “I do a radio show every morning on the internet and I can run it from my hotel room, even live from the tour bus, just plug in my internet card and go – and people are like ‘yo we can’t even tell that you’re not on turntables’. I’m really impressed with it.”
Many thanks to DJ Dummy for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk with us. For the whole month of July, Native Instruments are providing a free update to Traktor Scratch Pro for all S4 users who purchase and register their product – free is the kind of price we love, and it makes the deals we’ve currently got on the S4 in our store even more tempting – go look for some S4, Midi Fighter and TMA-1 headphone combo deals!
Don’t forget to let us know what you think about using the S4 as a DVS set up, and what your alternative solutions are below.
When he said twelve I thought he was talking about running all four decks in sample mode but that’s still sixteen! who needs math to be the dmc champion! (but I would have set the finishing sample to one shot)
the only problem with this setup is swapping sets as the S4 unlike the denon isn’t a stand alone mixer so when you swap your laptops over it’ll cut out.
Two usb ports like the serato soundcards or even just its own power supply should be pretty simple upgrades!

I don’t get it… How does he get so smooth beats while scratching? I’ve tried that myself, but only way I can do it is by scratchin, and realeasing it into a pre-made cue-point…
i am the only one who doesn’t like this performance at all?
Can u do the same with the denon mc6000? Traktor scratch on the mc6000 with the technics on time code?
I swear the shop in that video is Vital Vinyl in Minneapolis. Can anyone verify this?
I noticed that two. I didn’t even read the title, it just caught my eye. I have spent too much time there. Although it has gone down hill in the past few years.
Shout out to DJ Dummy. I used to go to church with him and DJ LS One back in the day. Should out to Word of Life Ministries. LOL Who
Cool deal for S4 users, thats as long as you haven’t all ready payed for an upgrade.
How ever Internal mode means no post fade fx or post fade loop recorder sampling, which is a massive, huge deal breaker for me. Considering Traktor had a large over haul with T2 without post fade being added I got a feeling it never will. I prefer the thought of sticking the Novation Twitch between a set of 1210’s, yeah you’d still have to use a NI soundcard but the smaller footprint, better construction and lack of jogs really makes the Twitch an intresting Traktor DVS battle mixer. But alas, no post fade fun, rubbish!
an awesome Techtools map and lay over for the Twitch would certainly be nice
idea for this set up , more machines , keep vinyl alive and make ur’s console looks pro and better view rather just a controller it self.
lucky im still keep 2 pairs of technics mk2..
Enough S4 stuff, when are we gonna be able to read that Novation Twitch article your promised us? 🙂
I actually ended up cancelling my pre order of the twitch, it’s been delayed into August now. But, I’ll be damned if it won’t be mine soon!
I’ve been doing this set-up since Traktor Scratch Pro 2 came out… and I LOVE IT.
I get to use TurnTables when I want to and for smaller gigs (like in-store stuff he’s doing), I would only use the S4 by itself. Makes my life a whole lot easier and gives me options.
I would also recommend anyone who wants to use the S4 has a mixer get a 19’inch case will help commuting the thing…
Cool rig. I’m working towards a neutral controllerist / turntablist setup myself, and I am liking what’s done here.
So you’re telling me that if i waited three days to activate my S4, i would’ve got the scratch update for free? Well that’s just fucking stupid…
Daaammmnnnn…..
Why do you buy a controller only to throw in turntables? Traktor is shaking in their boots I love it how they just suddenly release this shiz when NS6 gets released, just release it with the actual software dont provide it as an upgrade you greedy bastards. Does this actually have input metering? Who the hell wants to drag TT around? The point of a controller is to walk in and plug in. NS6 destroys this S4 and when Itch 2.0 comes out its going to be over, plus the platters are soooo close to real vinyl anyways so theres no point in plugging techs in.
-1 for traktor!
Ive yet to see anyone gig with this unit ….. SSL will always be the standard.
Serato is good at what it does and so is Traktor. Neither is better just better for a particular user.
Having a controller where you can add DVS has advantages. ITCH will never have DVS. With DVS control the majority goes to pay the Patent holder. The beauty is that you have the choice to use TT’s or not depending on room, preference or other factors.
i gig with an s4 alone.. i also bought the tsp2 upgrade.. and i don’t bitch about it. come see me in action .. i’ll blow your fucking mind.
S4 would be soooooo much better without jogs
couldn’t agree less with you. i dj with the s4 and mostly play Rap/Hip-Hop music. the s4 let’s me scratch & do crazy creative things.. live.. on the fly. the JOGS are amazing. maybe the s4 is not for you.. it’s not for a beginner.. trust me. good luck
Wait, what version of traktor then comes with the S4 bundle? Cause I’m buying the S4, but maybe not within July so it’d suck to be late with a week or two
so good technic
I’m sorry but there is hardly any rhythm in the set. This is one of the most annoying things about scratching. I don’t care how technically skilled you are, if you’re not cueing back to the right point, creating gaps and out of tempo you’re gonna sound like rubbish. I’d rather hear a mediocre turntablist play tight and rhythmic than listen to a barrage of out of sync scratches and juggles than makes you want to throw the DJ’s vinyl across the room.
I completely disagree. 1) Its a performance. 2) There was nothing “off-rhythm” about that performance. If you “clap along” with each set-piece u find its on point in every segment (grant it, there are tempo changes when he changes segments)
you are so right man.. i’ve come to the conclusion that many people just don’t get hip-hop djing. it’s not their fault.. they just.. well are lame. This video shows how sick the s4 is.. and how tight DJ Dummy is. Real talk. don’t hate.
They definitely need to add post fader effects to the unit.
