Introducing DJ PowerTools – Sound Packs for Controllers

Have you ever wanted to wail out a synth solo on top of a track or drop a dubstep baseline during a break?  You could always cart along a keyboard and load up Ableton in your sets but that is not very practical for the average DJ. To solve that problem and add a layer of musicality in my sets, I invented a system of MP3s with pentatonic scales several years ago. After many months of fine tuning, the first public version is finally available for you to play with. I am proud to introduce DJ PowerTools, the modern controllerist’s version of the scratch record.

DJ PowerTools Packs contain two types of files:

KITS

Each MP3 contains 8-14 sounds (with a cue point for each sound) including wobble bass lines, tones, sound effects and white noise for a broad palette of sonic sources to juggle.  They are excellent for remixing a song on the fly and adding deep sounds to any song. Musically, the kits provide a few of the essential notes that will always work for the selected key.

SOUNDS

Sounds are your instant synths that can create new melodies and bass lines. Each MP3 contains 8 notes carefully selected to always work for the style of music selected. Instead of 8 chromatic notes, we provide the essential notes you would want to play (similar to a pentatonic scale) taking out all of the guess work so you can feel confident dropping in synths on the fly.

The DJ Power Tools Dubstep Pack contains 3 Kits and 7 sounds for a total of 120 MP3s. Pick up the full pack for only $14.99 in our webstore.

HOW DO THEY WORK FOR DIFFERENT MUSIC STYLES?

  • All kits and sounds come in a zip file with 12 MP3s. One for each key code (1A,2A,3A etc…).
  • Every MP3 has been prepared with beat grids and cue points for Serato and Traktor.
  • Each note sequence is laid out in a scale that will always be in key with a matching song.
  • The files and MP3 tags are labelled with key based on the camelot scale.

You can tempo match DJ PowerTools against any song using keylock to maintain the primary key. This means one single file can be used across a wide range of music styles and tempos. Just use cue point buttons to trigger each note and your controller has been transformed into a powerful musical instrument!

THE NITTY GRITTY

These sounds have been engineered by James Terris using a wide range of analogue synths, the best digital software and unique vintage boxes (like Speak and Spell) for the most punchy, unique tones possible. Each sound has been designed with the following in mind and painstakingly tuned over the course of three months with my help.

  • mutliple layers of tones from each hit (rhythmic and tone)
  • specific amounts of space between cue points
  • tones are built to be modulated well with DJ effects
  • everything is mastered and polished so it cuts through a final mix really well
  • the notes provided are selected to work well with the specific genre
  • the kits are carefully selected groups of sounds, which when played together can form musical conversations

James did sound design for the well known Dave Smith “Tetra” box among others so you can be sure that the bass lines, synths and one shots are the juiciest tones possible.

Here are two examples with free downloads for you to try out the new concept!

    Hey Djtt

I just bought the powertools pack, but i haven’t yet received the download link.

  • Obie

I LOVE the concept of this, unfortunately I am a Torq guy…so naturally I’m gonna request that we see you add torq grids and cue points to this sound pack and I will buy this in a heartbeat, or a downbeat if you will

  • Josh

Not Paying 15 bucks for stuff I have in other packs that are free

  • Michal Gochna

links for demo files stopped working 🙁
    Can anyone reupload it somewhere?

  • Rossinelectric

Does this only work for Traktor or will Serato support it as well?

  • Tré Tuna

So what seems to be the average wait time for the download link? Seems most people are waiting for a bit. I just bought it, but was hoping that by now it would be setup pretty painlessly and quickly.

    • Tré Tuna

And within’ 6 minutes of posting this I get my e-mail with the download link. Thank you DJTT!! Can’t wait to play around with this stuff tonight at rehearsal with my band!

  • Sheesh

    I never received a download link after purchase….. =(

  • ee e

i just bought it last night but how long should i expect to wait till i get a email with a link?

  • Chandler

This solidifies it, I won’t be coming back to DJTT any more.  Selling off cheap WAV soundpacks as some sort of revolutionary innovation in DJ Technology? No thanks.

    • Rockludret

To be fair, I haven’t seen any loop-package designed to mimic battle records, so its still sort of a new idea. Especially since not all DJs can or are willing to learn how to take a bunch of loops and take the time to make them into something you can just trigger on top of records you’re spinning.

I mean you don’t HAVE to buy it, and the loop sounds pretty good, good enough to drop during a transition or to give a track a new spin.

  • Frank

never received any download links :-/

  • the dj ally

This is the most innovative thing I’ve seen since your series on re-purposing midi keys wayyy back in the day. Phenomenal work!!!!

  • SamBenDavid aka DJew

Wow….I thought this was a genius idea until I saw that the only ones currently available are Dubstep packs 🙁 I’ll wait for the next ones to come out

Wasn’t there a test here on DJTT on Key-finding software like Mixed in Key and a few others, were it ended up finding the right key only about half the time..? I’ve searched for it, but can’t seem to find it anymore. Has the software become better since then? If it has, it would be great with a new test!

This is nothing new, if most people bought a Native Instrument sound card or midi player, chances are it came bundled with Kore Player.  Kore Player comes bundled with 1.5 Gig of .wav sounds.

And the promised Serato cuepoints? Don’t exist. Was hoping to drop these straight in my crates for tonight’s gig, but I guess it’ll have to wait.

lol… did that youtube begin with “a brand new concept we’ve been working on for several years” ? ;-P

This is by no means a new idea. I’ve been buying/creating dj tool tracks/records like this for years.

I don’t mean to say this is a bad thing. It’s just not new. I’m also working on the same type of project myself. 😛

The fact the sounds are separated in keys is already a step up, I do believe. I haven’t yet found a sound pack that has this.

I do that (adding live improv layers in key with the music) with a korg kaossilator,it brings you the same musical expression, and you can try a lot of musical modes and intervals (scales) to better match the song´s mood. I  also add a comment (under the label “comment 2” in Traktor) with data about the synth patch , scale, key and arpegiator pattern that suits the better with each song! .

I really think DJ’s should remember that they too are musicians, and should know what the key of a song is, how to identify it, and how to mix together songs in their relative major/minor forms. Key softwares and that key code system really bugs me because I feel it can enable people into being lazy with their musicianship. Especially because it’s not 100% accurate.
    Great post!

I agree that you need to be able to use your ears to work out which songs will work together, but i find that software such as mixed in key can be a useful tool for sorting out large song libraries.
(strangely i just cant seem to remember the keys for all 11,000 of the songs in my library off the top of my head…)

Um, if the music key system and which keys matched best to each other were so easy to remember, then the camelot system would never have been made. What is the difference between the two? The one IS made for DJing, the other isn’t. Please explain to us how to identify a key of a song and which keys are mixable or how you go about doing it.

      • doubleD

if you really wanted to get technical, a piano or any instrument with tuned pitch (our your own ear if you have perfect pitch) can determine the key, and the camelot key wheel was developed off of (somewhat) basic music theory concepts (relative minor, etc) HOWEVER, i do use mixed in key and love it for saving me days of work determining the key and making a music theory shortcut, after all, this is the same kind of debate as wheather or not to use sync.. it just makes things faster and lets you be more creative with your mixing
