The response to my recent NI demo video featuring a live Depeche Mode remix was great, but a LOT of people asked for the demo on how it was done. The wait is over and we have an exclusive inside look video from my shoot that day. Check out the explanation above and then dig into the article for a deeper look into the details.
CORE CONCEPT 1: Jog wheels turn on and control the effects.
- Pressing down on the jog wheel turns on an effect.
- Turning it in either direction modifies the values of those effects.
Since the down press engages the Beat Masher, it allows you to reliably “grab” a part of the song and work it in or out.
CORE CONCEPT 2: Combining relative values = random madness!
This was the first time I used this trick on a jog wheel, although it does exist in our Midi Fighter ProBeat Masher mapping. Instead of hard mapping one effect to the jog wheel rotation I used the following technique:
- Each jog wheel is mapped to control the rates of three effects.
- Each effect is being controlled in a relative fashion.
- The rate and acceleration on each effect is different so they “compound” at different speeds.
This means that depending on how fast you spin the wheel or how far it is thrown, many random possibilities can occur. For the drums there is less randomness built in so I can reliably play patterns of 1/4 notes or 1/16ths, but for the vocals I invited random magic to creep in. This was especially amazing in the final chorus where the vocal track gets doubled in this eerie harmony that was totally un-scripted.
CORE CONCEPT 3: Create a rhythm system
In addition to turning on an effect, the jog wheel press sets the effect values to a specific musical value. For example, pressing the beat repeat wheel grabs a 1/4 repeat every time. By doing this and tuning the relative values, I can predictably find other notes and start to learn the “instrument”. With the beat repeat, using a combination of the masher and filter allows you to cut in the kick or snare creating some pretty epic fills, all perfectly in time with the track.
- Pressing the jog wheel at 8-clock sets a 1/4 note moving back to six switches to 1/2 and up to twelve – 16ths.
CORE CONCEPT 4: One shot loops timed to the master clock.
A LITTLE CHALLENGE
Now with a solid insight into the video, watch the performance again and see if you can pick out the techniques with your ears. I will give you a hint – don’t use your eyes, because there are a lot of things happening in the mix that are not shown on camera..
Hi, thanks for this great tutorial. I want to know where can i get the mapping file for traktor if there is one ?
It should help me a lot 🙂
Hi, thanks for this great tutorial. I want to know where can i get the mapping file for traktor if there is one ?
how do i I map my one shots to also sync to the master tempo like you did
Where can I download this… new to this site
hi,
got the S2, really nice controller… but the output (TRS) volumes really weak…. :
do others have this problem, or mine is defect ??
are you serious? some of you bought with the S4 one of the most expensive controllers and you are whimpering here like little girls for the mapping?
it’s a technique, not a way things go.
learn to solve your own problems you copy cats
I imported that S2 mapping but nothing happened, i tried activating the effects by pressing the shift and reset button and still nothing, i tried pressing on the jogwheels, so whats up? is it broken, im new to this traktor software!

He’s using a softstep controller to control the “one-shots” right?
damn i just got a S2 and would like the mapping 🙁 is there anyway I could get it???
The purpose of this page is to obviously point us in the right direction
without giving it away. Why dont you guys just take a shot at mapping
it for yourself? I took the time and got most of jog wheel/effects
figured out. Just need to figure out the sampling/syncing section. Ean
was generous enough to share this technique and method with us (THANKS EAN!), and I know he said it will be available for the S2, but JESUS
quit BEGGING for the mapping! Hate to quote a friend of mine, but “instant gratification has definitely lowered this generations work ethic.”

i understand you are trying to keep your midi fighters unique, but i am also all for a sexy and erotic S4 and S2. please continue your excellent customer support by providing mappings for both.
Please Ean, give us the same for the S4 or at least explain to us how to do it…
Is there some of you who tried to do it on the S4?

On the S2 Exclusive Look Post, DJTT wrote: ” They have improved the S2?s custom user mapping, so you can modify and change the way your controller works without losing all of the resolution offered by the native HID connection. This is a step up from the s4, which would only allow removal of functions by turning the controller into MIDI mode, which limited it’s functionality.”
My question is: Will it be really possible to make such mapping for the S4? Will it have less resolution? What are the differences between S2 and S4 in this respect?

totally second the whole s4 milarky. Would love something similar for the s4 pretty pretty please x
could we get this mapping for the vci arcade?
What should i get??? The S4 or the S2?
A more insight on CORE CONCEPT 3: Create a rhythm system would be of great help! I did not understood a word there! Please help us out Ean!
we need it for the S4!!!!!!!! S4!!!!!S4!!!!!

Dig this video, but can you PLEASE elaborate on how exactly you got the one shot samples to sync to the master clock?
Nice article.

PEOPLE LEARN TO REMAP !!!
if remapping was easy, everyone would be doing it. i’ve done a little of it and it can be a pain.
it isn’t the most intuitive process and the NI controller manager is a great example of a bad interface design.
if one is serious about learning how, i would say get a copy of the Traktor 2 Bible. Rainer Haselier has done an amazing job pulling all the important facts together. (Note to the “wannabes” — this book is not a youTube recipe for “how to do xyz”, it is serious technical stuff…)
you can also get a tool for the Mac called Xtreme Mapping. it looks like it might be a bit better from the human’s point of view but it does not do any of the hi-res HID/NHL stuff.
It would help greatly if we could look at the original mapping on the S4. Its nearly impossible without somewhere to start.

im attempting to make the mapping right now…its complicated lol.. actually got it all setup..i just cant figure out how to get the parameters to shift value faster..i even sent the sensitivity way up and the effect values barely move..but on the plus side everything works :)) also i used the offset buttons above the tempo fader to create modifiers.. basically what im thinking is you could click the up arrow modifer which would creat modifier ex m4-1 which would be a whole set of effects which would load into all the effects, click offset up arrow again..would change to m4-2 which could be a whole other set of effects…etc. also im using different brightnesses on the led to distinguish between which setup ur using..ex like a low led light, medium, than bright setting. If anyone could help me out let me know. thanks. but ean if u wana create it that would be freakin eppiiic lol :))
dj ean you too good
Please Please Please Ean! We need a mapping like this for the S4! I would even be willing to pay a small fee! The S4 is the most expensive controller you sell on your website, yet there are no Ean Golden mappings available for it???
Nice!! Yup I noticed the FX tab in the sample deck. I’m getting excited!!! When can we get this for the S4?
On this page mappings has allways been free, why not the two versions for the S4 and S2 for free.
Is just not fair, even so the S4 is a most expensive unit and doesnt have a mapping from DJTT, thats even more strange, also knowing that has much more potential.
I think you guys should put the mappings for both units for free.
And give them the support you give to the other controllers, like the VCI-100, maybe not so much but this FX mapping would do, i think this was what gave this page his huge support fan base and fame.
I still support you guys 100% i know you have responsabilities but everytime you give one of this mapping you get more people into your page and to buy your stuff.

Yo Ean – nice work.
Liking the fresh sounds and style.
But it seems like S2 buyers are getting more of their money – I’m an S4 owner and would love to have access to this kind of mapping.
Any chance of a release?
You are the shit, Ean, thank you for open sourcing 🙂
Hey there!
It would be great if this mapping would be released for the S4. Maybe with an instruction to install it. I own the S4 since christmas, but i gained some experience before that, but with real turntables. I tried almost everything out but im a still scared of changing traktors mapping.
But please Ean and the DJ TT Team, release this mapping with the effects on the jogwheels for the S4. That would be such an magnificent contribution to my effects routine 🙂

Does anyone know if ‘OTHER’ Midi controllers with ‘Touch-Sensitive Jog-Wheels’
such as the ‘Gemini-CNTRL 7’ or the ‘Numark Mixtrack’ can be mapped the same way
where the platter controls the effects and amount? Or is this specific and can
only work on the S2?

You say at the end that this mapping is available for the S2 on this website? Is it also available/ or work’s with the S4?
We are fine tuning the mapping and when the s2 becomes available then we will release it. I do believe it will be possible to also use with the s4. Customers that buy the s2 from us will get the mapping first- as we need to beta test it for a bit.
Again, that was off the hook. respect!
But I must say that I would be slightly disappointed like the rest of the s4 user’s if there a similar mapping didn’t become available.
Please, I repeat please make a mapping to compliment the s4.
So much excitement. feel like a kid at 5 months after X’mas when he see that his favorite toy he love’s so much is now not able to do all that the new model being advertised on t.v can 🙁
Thanks for the tease 😉
I already own a S4 for a year, and I don’t understand much of what you are doing Ean 😉
F***ing Cool!!
But: knowing this S2 is targeted on the beginning DJ, maybe you should show us what it can do; straight out of the box with the standard mapping! This advanced is a bit to freaky and can scare newbies…
Ye! Mapping for S2 but what about the SE 100? Sponsored by NI?
yeah ean, please man. hook one up for the s4
+1
If it was possible to apply this map to the S4 don’t ya think Techtools would of done it since day one?! Maybe if people bothered to read the articles properly and understand there software a bit better maybe there wouldn’t be so many people asking/demanding the same “make an S4 map” question!
Unlike the S2 and X1, Native Instruments don’t allow user access to the S4 Hi Res NTL code. Meaning if Techtools wanted to make an S4 version of this map they would have to apply it to S4’s midi mode, which completely miss’s the point of the Eans S2 map’s jog based performance features.
Native Instruments have had plenty of requests from users who want access to the S4 hi res code, but you have to understand simply opening it up to user tweaking like the S2 and X1 wouldn’t be straight forward due to it’s size, features and the large amount of modifiers the S4 standard map use’s. I expect they will eventually allow user access but I guess a firmware update will be needed as aspects of the S4 map are hard wired.
So is the S2 hi-res code fully accessible while on the S4 you only have they options in the extra S4 tab of traktor? As many others i did read the articles properly, still i can not figure out, how much exactly u can change on the S2 and the S4 mappings without losing the hi res connection. Would be nice to have some more information on this topic!
You sure? The HID high res is for the jogs, so not needed here. The S4 would work in 100% native MIDI-mode to achieve this.
Dam this S2 map makes me mIss my old vci, if you found a way to also apply fader fx just like the vci map I’d be totally sold.
I take the mapping allows the user to jump between fx to normal jog use??
Haaaaay!
Either there is a release 2.0.4 that I haven’t got or you’ve got some new features in yours Ean… Did I see Key, FX and Monitor selection for each of the samples? :):)

The new version is already in Beta… It’s high likely Ean have it too.
Yeah, the new version of Traktor is 2.1.0.

Thank’s for the video. It sounds very interresting. At the end of the video, it is said that the mapping is available on the website, but I didn’t found it.
Thanks for the insight Ean. But how exactly did you remap the samples to be in sync with the master clock? And how about a mapping for the S4 to do the same things? Pretty please?:)
scamo
Very good observations but since beta tester are under NDA you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get the answers.

Ya! This got me really excited, can’t wait for the keylock on sample decks!
S2 & Mikro Maschine or tuition? This is gonna be a tough call. Great vid as usual Ean!
that sample sync is actually genius
top video on this page says ‘video is private’ when trying to click on it 🙁
Very inspiring to watch what you can do with the new controller! I can’t wait till i can get one!
Vid comes up private?!?!
fixxed i guess <3
