The Xone K2: New Allen and Heath Controller

Allen and Heath announced today a new side car controller similar to the X1, featuring a built in sound card and internal links to combine multiple units. A blank canvas, the MIDI controller has no suggested purpose, so we are excited to hear how you might use the new Xone K2 from Allen and Heath.

Audio Interface: Xone:K2 has a internal, four channel (2 stereo) soundcard.

the Allen and Heath K2 controller will ship with a matching case that brings them up to mixer height.

Latching Layers
By assigning controls to multiple layers you can give a single physical control up to three functions. You can configure all, some or none of K2’s controls to be linked to the latching layers system. As a quick visual reminder, when toggling through layers all switches assigned to a particular layer will illuminate in the appropriate color.

Is the goal of this controller to add extra functionality to a mixer or to make a compact replacement for a mixer?

  • Ageless Male

That’s a pretty nice post, i was reading something related on another web page not too long ago that essentially said the same thing although yours is better,

I want this so bad. I hate controllers with rounded corners and wish/hope they come out with one w/o a soundcard. But even so, 85-90% sure I am going to trade in my X1 for one

  • Ben Cryder

I think this would make a great addition to the X1, rather than a replacement.  Use one of these as your mixer then add one or two X1’s for deck control and have the ultimate house party rig!  This would also kill it with ableton, just add whatever flavor of gridded controller you fancy(APC40/20, MPD, Launchpad, touchOSC iPad, etc.) and there you go.

My thoughts exactly. It allows for a more compact system.

  • Grant Reynolds

thank god!! I have been screaming for an x1 style controller with a soundcard that doesn’t have a stupid jog wheel on it!!    Soundcard is a massive selling point..

I would buy 2 of these and aggregate the soundcards!!

  • Tom

XLink, so that’s what these ominous RJ45 connectors are. I wondered when I saw them on a loop sampler lately.

  • Abletom

I can see why loadsa people don’t want the soundcard, but someone who uses vinyl or cd and mixes externally can just add a digital deck to their set up and it fits right next to the mixer with no need for lugging around / buying an external soundcard.

The buttons are unmarked, there’s shed loads of mapping potential and loads of different ways to use it I reckon the soundcard makes it even more versatile.

I can definitly see myself selling my xone 1d and A2DJ to buy this especially when space can be limited and I dont have to worry about mucking about with 2+ channels after the last dj or having to make do with the mixer at the club that I’m not familiar with/ keen on.

I dare say because you’ve got the two channels, you could use it as an effects unit on the return channel of your mixer if you’re mixing externally?

    with a Vestax Pad-One and a launchpad.

  • Thomas

Absolutely what I need given that I mix internally and would love a good mixer-ish controller.

  • Djzilch

the golden days of the kontrol X1 are over… move over and make way for the Xone K2!! Really excited with this product, so many possibilities! The fact that it comes with the case/stand for free (as opposed in having to purchase it separately like the X1) is an extra bonus!! Native Instruments better bring out the X2 soon if they wanna play catch-up 🙂

    • Tom

What’s going on here – NI bashing? Great. They had it coming 😉

Looks so sleek and versatile, you could go anywhere with this thing. I would easily buy 2, but knowing our friends at Allen & Heath MSRP will be like $10000 lol

  • sss

i do not think that t here is the need for a soundcard! but im definetly againts encoders! its great that you way more knobs then the x1 ! the faders are also great! i curently have only one x1! later on, like in a year or so, when i would upgrade to 4 decks i would consieder getting another x1, so i’d still have to get another controllere like a faderfox or even a 3rd x1 for ableton live running in the background! now i dont see the need!!!

  • NotSoSiniSter

Omg I love the sound card! I could use this in ableton and mix externally. 😀

this looks seriously dope.  ill defiantly be checkin this out!!  It’s just like a mappable X1 im guessing?  😀

  • JuanSOLO

When I first looked it over I thought, FINALLY someone is thinking about what makes a controller great. This really does look like a perfect option to park next to a mixer. However, then I started reading about the sound card?  Not sure why it even has one. Anyways, if the price is right, I am definitely getting a couple.

  • djMIXali

This looks to be a great option if you are not running timecode.  My guess is that the x2 will not be far off from this and NI adding DVS capabilities to the soundcard and possibly adding larger cue point buttons.

  • tuf

since when did a headphone output constitute an extra 2 channels? I can only see one pair in the pics, does this mean you have to run each ‘out’ as a mono output?  Shame there’s no crossfader though, that would have sealed it for me; I’d love to have such a compact setup.

  • Lokey

reloop makes a controller very similar to this. I wonder how the compare build quality wise?

This might be my answer to my question.  Able to control traktors 4 deck in one compact controller.  I wanted NI to make this, but I guess Allen & Heath got there first lol… I just wish they didnt have to add a soundcard, this is going to be an expensive kit.

  • Henrik Löwenhamn

Another blog had it at $199. Which is great value.

The internal soundcard comes in handy when recording mixes at home. If it was for more professional use it would have had balanced XLR out.

    • proben

The 199 is in GBP not USD so expect more like $250+

    • guest

I think I saw that same blog, but it was 199 Pounds. so it will be around 400 usd

Why the soundcard? this baby looks great but please give us a version w/o the soundcard. Also apc40 led-lit endless encoders would have been nice.

Is there anyone listening (djtt store?):
    -ultraportable
    -linkable
    -no soundcard
    -faders
    -endless encoders

I’ll be in heaven with that. Maybe Akai should come up with an APC2 🙂

Led rings around the encoders would be Golden but it would sure make the unit more expensive then it is.
Let’s home someone do a version without soundcard and $80 cheaper 🙂

      • Tom

endless controllers (+LED rings) generally are slower to respond, as their relative position has to be recalculated (and displayed) continuuosly – either by the controllers internal logic or by the driver. I am actually happy with a set up that contains absolute rotaries only – exept the one relative one on the APC20.

Curious that there’s no horizontal “crossfader” midi fader.

    • Grant Reynolds

obvoiusly aimed at use dance music djs who havent used a crossfader in 10 years 🙂

    K2 > X1

  • W.T.

Looks great! Wonder how much this will retail for. Looks like all I would ever need for a great compact Ableton controller without lugging an extra sound card with a APC or MPD controller.

  • proben

Nice teaser photo of the DB2 alongside it…. want want want want 😉  Not sure why the sound card and XLink are both included though; the soundcard makes this a cool standalone mixer but if you’re already using a soundcard (presumably you would be if you are using the XLink) then the internal soundcard is a redundant expense.  Maybe they will eventually come out with a midi-only version of this.

      I wish it had a midi-only version 🙁
But since I still have a old Numark DJIO that needs to be replaced, I might buy it 😛
