Vestax VCI-400: Exclusive Video and Photos!

Vestax is back! After a solid year of limited traction in the DJ world and a lack-luster response to the VCI-100Mk2, Vestax comes back with a solid offering that should have plenty of you drooling. Its sexy, well built, full of great features and certainly “pro” quality. Can they make it in time and at a price you are willing to pay? We shall see! Check out lots of photos and an exclusive walkthrough video after the break.

  • Product: Vestax VCI-400
  • Price: $999 (MAP)
  • Communication: MIDI over USB (Requires Power Supply)
  • Available: Late This Year (Sign Up to Get Notification)
  • Ships with: Virtual Dj (4 Decks) + Serato DJ Intro (2 Decks)
  • Sound Card: 4 IN/4 Out

Vestax appeared to have learned their lesson with the VCI-100MK2 and came back with a controller containing:

  • Strong, well built components
  • Improved, high quality sound card
  • Neutrik inputs and outputs
  • Innovative control zones
  • a layout and design that is mapping and controllerism friendly
  • a slick black, red and grey look that is way more “pro”

A CLOSER LOOK

At about two inches shorter than the S4, the VCI-400 strikes a nice balance of being well spaced but looking reasonably portable. It will fit in more backpacks and conveys a nice solid look that feels at home next to turntables and mixers. Most other plastic controllers do seem a bit out of place in the rugged and utilitarian DJ environment.

NEW CONTROLS

One thing you cant help but like is that Vestax has provided a large palette of performance buttons and controls with no markings or pre-defined use. You, and of course we, can take these and make some really bad ass mappings without being constrained by typical DJ controls.

VCI-400SE ?

As you can probably expect, we are amped to make a hot-rodded version of this controller complete with a mind-bending mapping.

  • The good news: It is in the works. Sign up on this email list to get updates on the project!
  • The bad news: The regular VCI-400, and our version as well, wont be available for a while.

Here is the release schedule we have from Vestax:

  • Europe (Some time late this year)- December?
  • US (Early next year) – February?

Vestax has to overcome two big obstacles:

  1. They take a long time to build things and in today’s  “I want it now”-environment, throw away consumers are fast to move on to the next big thing.
  2. They are in Japan and due to a 10 year drop in the YEN, everything that comes out of Japan is very expensive for the rest of us.

Fortunately, Vestax makes some great DJ gear and as I was recently reminded sometimes DJs ARE willing to pay and wait for a better product. We recently sat down with Toshi (the CEO) and the rest of the Vestax crew to learn more about the 400 and discuss the possibility of me creating another special edition version. Toshi reminded me of another similar time in DJ history when the market was flooded by lots of low cost, me too, 2 channel DJ mixers that were priced in the $300 range. Vestax, in collaboration with Q-bert and others designed a mixer to beat them all – the PMC-07. While being vastly superior in production quality and performance, it was three times higher than anything else – $1000! Still, DJs bought them in droves for the performance difference it provided. Is the VCI-400 the new PMC-07? Probably not, but based on first impressions it’s probably the best 4-channel DJ controller out there, and thats pretty damn good.

hi can some one help me i would like to buy the new vci 400 but i would like to no if you can do dub fx and use my voice to the music like on the S4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC0ZDzs14uU
thank you and sorry for my english

I had the opportunity to play with the VCI-400 in Dubai last night.  I owned a VCI-100 MKI and was happy with that.  This is a huge step up and it meshes extremely well with traktor.  The controls are very intuitive and smoothly functioning.  I did not find a loop function however, but I only was toying with it for about 20 minutes or so.  The only thing that I didn’t like about it was that there is less space between the plastic jog wheel sides, and the vinyl simulation platter so when I would turn the jog wheels to line up a track (I try to use sync as little as possible), the pad of my fingertip kept touching the vinyl platter and stopping the track.  I do believe that this can be fixed by adjusting the sensitivity though. Prior to seeing the VCI-400, I was set on Traktor Kontrol S4.  Now I will have a tough decision to make…

    I want one please!!!

I have some questions regarding VCI400

basically, I wanted to get vci 400 first, but then have been hearing about 3 problems.
     1. latency on Windows2. power supply is flimsy. making it powering on unstable.3. output level too low.

I think 1 is fixed with new patch, but regarding 2, is that true? the power supply and its connection does look flimsy from the video, but it that causing problem with heavy use?
    3. is something that I’ve seen people complaining on the web. basically he was complaining that VCI’s output level is low that it becomes a problem when he is DJing in a set with other DJs with high output gears. because the master level would be set at a certain level, and he couldn’t get it to play loud although he did turn his VCI all the way up. So i’ve looked into the other products for awhile and it looks like VCI400’s max output is 10dbu(3.0V) & 5dbu(1.7V) while others are 14dbu+Is this a ligitimate concern? what does the Volage mean? I am just guessing power unit in vs. USB power or something…

I am pretty sure there are others who want to know my concerns too, so it would greatly appreciated if someone can answer these questions.
    Thank you

  • Hector Guerra

I would like to see a DJTT DJ Revolution setup with direct connection to ableton,  DJ’s need to make mixtapes!  will NI be dropping something??

  • Hector Guerra

Will there also be a buyable Midi Mapping of the SE Edition for those who already purchased the vci 400?

  • Manobahar

As an s4 owner i am dissopinted by the cheap build of s4!! things brakdown like hell!!!!
so its great to see they take the build quality seriously here!
and great to see more buttons to play with!!!:)
so i look forward to test one of them as my s4 under a year gone breaking down.
efx encoders are lose(plastic crap). and it seems pcs work better with other soundcard than s4`s own, check the ni`s forums.

  • Djlamid

are they really improving the sound card quality in vci 400? Cuz i swear to god the sound card quality in vci 300 its a real real shame!!! when u plug that thing and play it at the club and compared the sound quality from vci 300 and the in house CDJ its just bleh !!!! hurt my ears!!. Hope they fix this in this new vci 400

    • brassprophet

The vci-400 sound card is best in class. Small package, but it rocks the clubs with fantastic sound.

  • Geejunkmail

Hi DJTT’s are you guy going to make a mapping file for the vci400?
    Cheers M

  • Elda83

  • Dj Ams

This would be very apreciate to have a pointer to haunt like the cdj 1000 directly on the controller that really help to juggling.

  • Meoff

    No phono input? Bummer…

  • [O/][iii][O/]

Appears to be gorgeous “pro” build quality. Finally someone is thinking industrial grade rather than Fisher Price. About time. Kudos Vestax! Anyway, a couple of quick observations/questions:

    1) Where the heck are the separate booth monitor outputs/control? Why do manufacturers keep missing the basic, yet essential feature… especially on so called “all-in-one” solutions?

    2) Why on earth would a high end, $1K, 4-channel controller be only compatible with entry level/2-channel Serato Intro software and not the higher end, 4-channel Serato Itch software. Please tell me this is just a misprint.

  • Edge

    looks shit

  • Jack Creamation

    no dvs support, epic fail!

  • DJ Just Greg

    Just a few questions:

    1. Do you see stickiness of the “Tack Switch/Matrix” buttons as a disadvantage? I feel like if they were more high performance you could do some hotcue juggling. Is the play/pause section at the bottom better for this function? Is this something you may tackle with the “Golden edition”? I’d love to see some arcade buttons…

    2. I have a typhoon and kontroller x1, and am looking to upgrade. If I sell them, do you feel that the 400 would do a fine job of replacing the x1’s functions?

  • Cedric

please , have you did a mapping for it ?

  • Paul LaGreca

Will  you guys be upgrading the firmware? Does it accept DVS? Do your new knobs fit on it? If you answer, thank you! I am not expecting an arcade mod on this. I think it would just ruin this controller. I think I will pair it up with my VCI 100 or a MidiFighter if I get one.

  • John Pham

seeing preorders for these from some site for around $800 shipped. how much should the SE edition would cost? or will there be update/upgrade kit like the 100SE? currently owning the 100SE and waiting for the 400/SE upgrade and would like to know estimate price.

The controller is impressive. Does it have an analogue mixer? (I am interested is using the equalizers to effect on the two inputs shown in the back panel)

This looks awesome!  I just ordered the S2, but this would defiantly be my next upgrade.  I love how this controller looks and it seems to be laid out very well.  the reason why i didn’t buy the S4 is that it looked too cluttered for me.  but this looks streamlined and easier to use.  🙂

    • Loco

I think your brain is cluttered, the s4 layout is so straightforward you would be amazed, this of course with traktor in mind, TBH this looks more cluttered in appearance but I haven’t used one so I could say for sure…

  • Fggh

    omg i came…
    still loving my vci-100

  • Cleantron

I don´t get it. Why no booth out, again. So many people complained about this when the S4 came out and jet Vestax fails on this aswell.

  • Rob-b

btw: Its not a 4/4 soundcard and the specs are not 24bit/96KHz 😉

  • Eurodj101

im in!!!!i have a ddj-T1 and had an S4….Still havent found the perfect controller for me but this looks like it might be it…Ill sell my DDJ andd VCISE for this!!!

  • David De Grandpré

It look fantastic !!! the only think i dont like is that the input and mic input are behind the controller, it would be cool to be able to control the volumes from the top of the controller

Would be nice if all the volume fader levels were lit up like the S4. Also lights on the knobs or light rings around them like the APC-40 would be excellent.

  • Nakis

Dear Mr. Toshi san…I have one simple question: WHY NO BOOTH OUT????????

  • ManDingo

I never sell my equipment! I’m a pack-rat when it comes to electronics. But I can’t wait to kick that S4 in the closet!!! I get the giggles thinking of getting this sweet piece- VCI 400 as the ‘Golden addition’. Oh man, this is exactly what I want and have been begging for. Awesome!!! And plenty of time to start putting money away for it. S4 is ok for now, but I’ve never been in love with it-just like my “x” two “x’s” ago. Now the Vestax 400…I’m falling in love and it fells real good!!! BOOM bitches!!!

  • Scott Brio

Those filters! Drooooool… and the pads…

  • TheNonWho

    I’m a bit unsure.. I thing I’ll stay with my VCI 100 MKI , Kontrol x1 and Traktor Pro 2 …

  • Lo-tracker

thats looks like my dreams come tru

  • Woody Aki

I can see the legendary red PMC-CX filter knobs there…that can only mean that we might have the controller equivalent of a Sherman tank in terms of build, I hope!

    • ManDingo

      Hell yeah!!

    • ManDingo

      Hell yeah!!

  • DjAllstyle

I will midi map this unit for Ableton & Wala Bamn !!! There’s Bridge for Itch…It just seems like Ableton does everything. Serato unfortunately gets “Fail Of The Year” Award. They should realize. Dj’s that love controllers, are often the more “techy” of us & love to embrace the new set ups/controllers etc. & Serato took forever to update Itch & havent given us bridge & now, release an entry level product before they took care of they’re base. It seems Vestax understood & said “here you go, have fun” Its quite possible i will dj thru Ableton. Especially if this works the way that I’m imagining. Lets see, finger are crossed.

  • Morten Agnor

Since most of us will only use two channels i hope there will be a custom mapping that uses the C and D faders for something useful, like master fx (as in fader fx mode on the VCI100SE) or something else.

final nail in the coffin……DJTT will ignore the VCI 100 users.

  • bluelotus

    Still no booth out? Ugh…..

    • The D

srsly, what is the deal with that? if it’s going to be “all in one” then at least make it capable of this rather basic feature that every serious mixer has.

      • DP

Agree, that’s the first thing I noticed too.

  • Keyrb101

Just came back from the BPM show, had a good play with this today. I went looking for a controller, i wanted to get a go on the S4, DDJTI, numark NS6 and the VCi300……Well I was suprised. The S4 was a massive let down, found it very flimsy and and the jog wheels were so small i just couldn’t ever see me even attempting to scratch, I was going to get one but no chance now, can’t put my finger on it but it just wasn’t for me.  The DDjt was a great controller but seemed more suited to wedding DJs with the lack of serious features, felt good but alot of them were crashing for some reason?? The Numark Ns6 was just awesome so was the N4 WOW fantastic eauipment, fully scratch worthy jogs and loads of great features, i loved the feel of both of them…… Now off I went to check the VCI300, had a go, thought it felt lovely, real quality bit of kit, it was a close draw between that and the numark toys, THEN I SAW THE VCI400…omg it’s amazing, it has everything on it and it has a fully pro feeling. Not sure what people are moaning about with regards to the jogs? I was scratching on them no probs. This wins hands down for me over all the others, this is my opinion so may not be right for others but the feel of it was perfect for me, scratch as well as a midi controller ever could, the rotarys were perfect, loads of buttons to assign for all the tech boys and the filter rotarys ‘man’ that is just perfect! If they can get this to work out the box on Serato and Traktor fully assigned that would be sweet but i doubt it’ll happen. The only thing I didn’t like was i kept turning the track off on the left deck when scratching as the button was too close to the fader???? bit random but I think that play button could be the downfall of a few DJs at some key moments of a set. Hey just my opinion guys and gals…………………………..

  • DJZ

I am keeping my S4 thank you very much… although this looks much more durable than the s4 there are some things that it just does not measure up to when it comes to the S4 capabilities!!!

All good, but can we have an overlay for the 100 before you move onto the 400! 🙂

  • paddydj

    Hi,

I have one question about this too. Is the VCI-400 able to route the sound from the inputs to the software, or will it be wired like in the mc-6000, that you’re not able to put timecode to the software or even only scratch samples from your turntables. The problem with the MC-6000 is that you can’t get the sound  streaming to the laptop without being routet to the main output, so only if you bypass the signal through the analog channels and only if you really hear the signal through the headphones the sound will go to the software channels as well which is pretty bad, as you dont want the signal to go to the speakers 😛

Other thing: Will it be rack mountable?????

Thank you very much in advance.

I find it pretty cool that when I changed the crossfader in the VCI-100 ( I was the first one -> vci-100 pro x fade 😀 ) the feature of replacing the crossfader was taken account of by so many manufacturers.

    • N Veenstra6

Yes it Will be rack mountable, I have been told at the BPM.

  • Clayton Kimber

Well, this might retire my S4, ONLY if all at the controls are FULLY midi mappable, and not gimped.  I’m sick of buying controllers that are only amazing at one software, when they should work equally as well with any other software.

  • Ssgmack

Gateway device to a couple of turntables and an allen&heath mixer, beware.

  • Mikey_g

No midi (Din) in/out on the back.

Ean, will this be master/slave capable with other gear?

  • dirtydumbo

Arcade mod possible? looks like theres room tehehehehe

  • Thanatos

it’s look good but when vestax will make a something like scs.4dj it will the end of laptop djing. i don’t care about making my own template. i care about creativity. guitarist don’t spend there time changing tunage and stuff : they care about crafting there art, learning nu technnics and getting better ears. laptop are not good for booth, they are not reliable, they take a lot of space, they don’t like hot and smoke ambiance

  • Sldk

S4 kicks this craps ass…. jog wheels are crap..!

  • JV Bomb

Reading some of the comments here I see “time to think about getting rid of my S4” or “S4 Killer”. Frankly, while I think this new Vestex will be a great device, there is no way you can’t compare the integration that the S4 has with Traktor to any other device. It’s an NI product made for NI software. It’s not a plastic toy of a controller. It’s a great quality device that provides superb integration with Traktor. I will keep my S4 thank you. Reminds me of every time Apple comes out with a new iPhone and everyone needs to get rid of their perfectly good iPhone to get the next iPhone for no other reason than it’s new and shiney.

while that vestax joint is nothing but sweet sexy and desirable,  i have to agree with JV….

    • S4troll

      Just a word: Consumerism.

    • JV Bomb

I’d like someone to answer these specific questions.

      1. What makes this SPECIFICALLY an S4 killer?

      2. What does this or any other controller that is not an S4 do that the S4 cannot do (and don’t say “booth out option” as that has already been beaten to death in every other forum”)?

I’m not an NI or S4 fanboy. I just love my S4 and think that it truly is the best device for Traktor.

    • Anonymous

It’s got a pretty cool look, it’s got LED buttons that can be switched into different modes (in 2 sections.)  It’s got the two mode fx thing with the endless knob to select effects.  Overall it seems a lot more compact as well, I feel like the s4 is a bit too wide.

The s4’s integration with Traktor isn’t that big of a turn on for me actually, I’m not into how NI is really pushing hardware and software unity when the whole reason to get amped about Traktor over Serato is the hardware flexibility.

      • Slyooney

i agreed, i used the vci100se for a while and damn the things you can do with that little thing and the mod and mapping my ean, if you were going to compare a stock s4 with a stock vci400, s4 might come up on top but let ean do his magic with the team and im sure the VCI400 “SE” will be a monster! just recently sold my vci100se so i am now itching to get my hand on the vci400se by ean!

looks like a solid contender for the all-in-ones.
Nice to see Vestax going back to their VCI100 roots. Quality. Still, they started the sh8t controller fad with the Typhoon…

My only gripe is graphically speaking, the interface is all over the place, buttons on different grids etc, making it a bit of a hard read. This can be corrected somewhat with the DJTT skin I hope.

I was recently wondering if Vestax will come out with a 4 channels version of the VCI, and  now i’m getting impatient for this one to become available!
One of the reasons i haven’t bought the S4 is it’s poor build quality: all the units i tried from friends had already faulty knobs, faders or audiocard issues after just few months… i expect durability from a professional controller, and the VCI 100 is a tank compared to other solutions. I’ve got mine for over 4 years, carried around almost every night, and it’s still working perfectly.
The layout of this new 400 looks sick, and the button grids will be very handy with a “Midifighter style” mapping for the FX section! I’m also curious to see what Ean will take out of the hat with his SE version, and get inspiration from his mapping before build my own.

  • A5739649

    no DVS-support?

    • Wewantcandy

      sure it dos

      • Mr Qbiak

No it doesn’t. For traktor at lease.

  • Emil Beatsnatcher Brikha

As much as I LOVE the build quality and aggravated assault and bludgeoning abilities of the Vestax products, I keep asking myself the question… why jog wheels?!

When the Twitch came out with its sexy touch strips I was blown away and I never looked back. I have never been into scratching, I’m a knobs and buttons type of guy and for the life of me I can’t understand why the industry isn’t over the wheels, or at least bringing innovation and variation. They were great when they came out but with the introduction of touch strips and BPM sync buttons, who would miss the tempo fader (replaced on the Twitch with a knob, which is MUCH more accurate) and jog wheels?

It looks like a lovely machine, but after having sniffed up the Novation Twitch Tree… I am never looking back at the days of when the (jog) wheel was invented. Heck, don’t even know why I’m complaining, I found my dream machine, I hope you do the same 🙂

    • James 'Pioneer' Burkill

the natrual movement of a DJ is round for the discs that simple not a touch strip simple, but everyone has their way to DJ.

    • flo

manual sync just feels more natural with jogs. really handy when mixing out of and into real vinyl.

    • DJFernandough

it will in the end be all a matter of preference IMO, more controllers will come with no wheels but wheels will not soon die, some of us just gotta have our wheels

    • DJFernandough

it will in the end be all a matter of preference IMO, more controllers will come with no wheels but wheels will not soon die, some of us just gotta have our wheels

      • ManDingo

The wheel was invent how long ago, by Mr. Business Man, Caveman, and to this day we are still using that wheel. Jog wheels all the way. And wheel barrel for my girlfriend cause she eats to much.

    • ManDingo

I hear ya, and I’ve tried going without jogs, but it doesn’t feel the same. I gotta have jogs, specially when Ean jacks up that 400 with his special mapping-fade fx and all. WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO skit, skit, skit, skit ,skit!!!!

    • baseburner

I think you’re right. I really love wheels but I think controllers with them often look abit toy like. considering most clubs are buying the new gen of CDJ now and that has HID and Midi I’d much prefer to use those and have my controller for effects, looping and cue juggling…

    • Loco

Apparently not many people know how useful they can be, of course with digital djing you don’t “need” them with a good mapping of pitch bend buttons, but they do have more precision due to size/tech than a knob, thus giving a more analog feeling….effects can be programmed to them and are a delight to us with, plus the scratch can be amazing depending on the controller.  In the end it’s about feeling and most importantly, creativity… just a thought.

    • bigbarca

I think the most important question here will be… who wants their talent only to be known for pushing buttons? I mean… it’s great after maybe 2 minutes, but in the long run, that shit is boring. A touch pad can’t never be as good as jog wheels. Sorry if you couldn’t master the art of scratching, but don’t knock it because you couldn’t do it.

  • Miguel

It looks promising indeed, but what would really make the
difference between this controller and the others out there would be the famous
DJTT mappings. Instead of trying to sell so many different gear that you don’t
actually support than much, you should clearly tell your readers which gear
will have continued support in the next couple of years (regular mapping
updates), so that we can decide which gear to buy. Not only it’s important to
have the mappings, but also a lot of videos teaching us on how to actually use
    them properly:)

Dude, I think it would be best if a DJ or producer wouldn’t hop on some DJ-magazine-bandwagon. Find out for yourself what fits best for you!

thank you vestax guys! they are showing the rest of the world that build-quality is one of the most important things at a unit you put your hands on some years for a thousand times. i use my VCI-100 from the year it was introduced and I never exprerienced any problems with the faders or knobs. it just looks and feels like a machine, not a toy. good luck NI trying to convince customers for your plastic bombers from the day on the VCI-400 will be released!

If it can play scratch live and traktor scratch by hooking up two tables, it shall be dub “The Dream Machine”

    • Aslaindub

No way any device will work traktor scratch and serato scratch live. Even when rane opened up the SL boxes to work as regular sound cards it won’t decode traktor timecode. Serato intro and traktor le work on select cheap controllers, but different beast aimed at the general populace who loves dj hero.
I hate where this scene is going.

Cool. Looks pretty good and the first controller I would even start to consider giving my S4 up for. Look out NI. Competition sure is great, isn’t it?

    Nice video again Ean.

I like the idea of those additional performance buttons.
The 2×8 performance buttons below the jogs could (almost) substitue the mappings I currently have on an optional maschine-controller.
And the additional row at the buttons featuring switchable modes (and colors) – nice!
One Question about the sound card: Will it also feature an emergency mode where inputs can be directly routed (or even mixed) to the main output in case of a software breakdown?

This is what I have been waiting for…. guess I have another patient night a head of clicking refresh on your page to be able to be one of the first to get my hands on something I MUST have.

  • 4real

lol how fast can you guys bury that serato intro article to never be touched or talked of again???

    • Calldom

calldom is right, expect more announcements over the weekend as the dj gear company’s unveil their new gear

    • proben

yeah you’re right it’s a conspiracy.  Didn’t you hear?  Ean was in the grassy knoll when JFK was shot too!

  • Marco F

Awesome! Looks like a viable 4 deck replacement for the VCI-100 and seems to be built like a tank!

At first, I was upset about how frequently you change controllers and feature new all-in-ones rather than focusing on one product like the VCI-100, but I’m becoming more and more excited to see that there will be no one “controllerism standard”. I’m a little envious of this after just buying the S4, but I’m slowly realizing that there is no one “best” solution. What I wanted was Traktor integration, which the S4 is ideal for, but I’m excited to see the creative possibilites that will be opened with this!

I want a version without jog wheels! …or with jog wheels that can be easily replaced with some buttons, faders or other controls.

that makes the s4 look like a toy

    • popoff_44

because that’s what it is compared to this 🙂

      • rony

it’s like the exact same thing as the s4 with a few more buttons and smaller too. for 200 bucks extra no thanks.

        • popoff_44

yeah, also built from metal and with replaceable faders…
it’s going to be on a slightly different level than the S4
hence, the price is expected to be higher
