How to Fix Unwanted Jog Wheel Vibration In Clubs

One rarely known but sometimes serious side effect of using controllers in clubs is jog wheel vibration. Without a motorized platter, some jog wheels can start to move in unwanted ways when introduced to heavy vibration. Unfortunately, big bass is a required environmental conditions of most clubs. This is not common to all controllers but if you happen to have this problem, here are a few ways to fix it.

Vibration in clubs has plagued DJ gear for years with turntables and needles alike falling prey to poorly built DJ booths. Various techniques have been employed to remedy the problem as it results in a serious problem when playing traditional vinyl: low end feedback. With DVS systems this is completely eliminated but controllers are now seeing issues as well.

“Severe bass in a room can cause a jog wheel to move in various directions, sending out unwanted pitch bend messages – instantly destroying a good mix.”

All controllers that have jog wheels are exposed to this risk, although some designs seem to be more susceptible than others. Here are the solutions we are aware of, in order of preference, based on the the least side effects.

Reduce vibration by providing cushion

If planning on playing in a club, it is wise to bring along a thin layer of foam to provide a cushion of vibration. In almost all situations this will solve the problem of jog wheel rotation but can take a bit of room in your DJ bag. I particularly like the cushion because it also allows the controller to sit on top of turntable, which is often the only space available.

  • Pros: No performance downsides for the controller
  • Cons: Takes up room in the gig bag.
There is a unique product out there called the “free float” that was designed for turntables but might also work for controllers. It packs up smaller than a foam core, and may also provide additional cushion.

Tighten the jog wheels

The fundamental problem is when the low end vibrations become more significant than the natural mechanical resistance. In laymans tems, the bass gets strong enough to move the jog wheels on their own. This can be easilly improved by increasing the jog wheel’s tension. Newer models of the VCI controllers, for example offer the ability to tighten their wheels making it difficult for them to turn accidentally.

  • Pros: Elimantes the problem permanently
  • Cons: Not available on s2, s4, and VCI-100. Changes the pitch bend response.

Put the jog wheels into FX mode

For the VCI-100 controllers, DJ TechTools offers a mode where you can put the jog wheels into “FX mode” controlling effects instead of the decks. In this mode, slight movements will cause no effect on the mix and keep things running smoothly. We are about to release a special s2 and s4 mapping that will also enable jog wheel effects seen in my NI videos very soon!

  • Pros: Always on instant effects. Easy to toggle on/off
  • Cons: Disables transport control

Kill the jog wheels

For the VCI-100, which was the first controller to show this problem, Vestax enabled a command that can turn off the wheels entirely. Just Press both “scratch or jog seek” buttons at the same time and look for the jog wheel lights to shut off (requires firmware 1.2 or above)

  • Pros: Truly gets to the source of the issue
  • Cons: You will lose all transport controls

Disable pitch bend

For many DJs that rely on sync and have quality beat grids, pitch bend controls may not even be required. In this case, you can go directly into the mapping files and remove the pitch bend commands entirely.

  • Pros: A permanent, non-hardware solution.
  • Cons: Removes all ability to pitch bend during a set.

What models have you experienced jog wheel vibration with? How did you fix it?

OVER TO YOU!

Yoga mats, yoga mats, yoga mats! Seems ridiculous, but I have found it to be the most effective solution for my 1200’s. They work better and are dirt cheap compared to products that were meant to address vibration problems. I use 2 trimmed yoga mats stacked on top of each other with my turntables on top. Amazon has any color you can think of!

I use the MIDI fighter’s silicon case under my laptop and it removes all vibrations. I use a 15 in. Mac book pro.

On a VCI-100 there is a good option I like to use, similar to the last one here: I just disable the pitch on the jog seek mode. That way the vibrations won’t bend my pitch and I am one button away from regular jog functionality.

A software  solution was the best approach for me. A mode button puts the pitch bends on the top of the jog when needed, but I lose scratching. Does the trick though.

I didn’t have too much trouble with the vibration but what I do is I close my jog wheels scratch mode so if it moves too much, It doesnt cut the music.

I always used to stick 4 wads of squashed up Gaffer tape on each corner.

    Worked just fine.

Wow is this good timing for an article.

Just last week I played my buddy’s bar, which he recently built a new DJ booth.  It’s a small wooden structure, although roomy and comfortable enough.  I couldn’t believe it when I first started playing, and realize the booth the sitting on top of the subs!!  Holy hell was the vibration reeking havoc on my VCI-100 jog wheels all night.

Also lately I’ve been using the VCI with traktor scratch and a 1200 for a dedicated scratch deck.   Let me tell you, vibration is still an issue for a DVS.  Sure there’s no low-end feedback, however, tempo will bounce around about +/- .5 bpm a bit making sync considerably less reliable.

Not a huge deal though, the real pain in the ass is when then deck is playing at all.  I’ll have the needle off the record, and tempo will STILL bounce around.  So when I go to load a new file into that deck, Traktor still sees that deck as playing and I get “Deck Locked.  Stop the deck to load new track.”  To load a new track, I had to switch the deck from scratch control to internal playback, load the track, then switch back to scratch control.  Pain in the ass.

And yeah, I know I can turn off the Deck Locked thing, but that’s something I prefer to leave on.

….seriously, who the hell puts the DJ booth right on top of the subs??

if you set a controller on top of my 1210 platter with no case or dustcover, with or without foam im gonna throw that 100 Into the wall as hard as I can, punch you in the face, drag your ass out the door by the collar. and if you were mashing buttons into my platter it wouldn’t end there…

Glad this took you a bit of time. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had the nice learning experience of doing it on my own. I am still learning and I know the mapping could probably be better. Can’t wait to see your mapping for the S4 and what effect combos you come up with. That is where I am at a standstill right now. I am not an experienced enough DJ (I don’t even consider myself a DJ yet), to know what effects go well together and which ones could be used well with the jogs. So that is why I am looking for more effect combo ideas. Anyone have any? Please add to my thread!:)

I am not an experienced enough DJ (I don’t even consider myself a DJ yet), to know what effects go well together and which ones could be used well with the jogs. So that is why I am looking for more effect combo ideas. Anyone have any? Please add to my thread!:)

this seems like it could be fixed w mapping or software.  something as simple as requiring pressing shift while manipulating the jog wheel to adjust pitch would solve the problem.

for those of you that use foam and place the controller on the turntable…doesn’t that make it unstable since the platter can rotate?

dont ever set anything but maybe a CD wallet/pack of cigs on a 1200 platter, ESPECIALLY if it isn’t yours, great way to get your ass stomped out instantly

Free Floats are cr** and totally unergonomic … It feels like you are playing over a plate of Gel-O, press on one side and the other rises.
Check for Isonoe solutions, though they are built for Technics Decks they are really awesome! even a simple like some Isofeet (sorbothane) should do the trick nicely.

On a more DIY approach you can buy those sets of 4 squared shredded compressed into a sort of, well err…, coaster.. don’t really know how it’s named in English .. but it’s the sort of thing you buy from most small/ big construction retail shops to put underneath your clothes washing machine so it does less vibration and banging on the floor .. these will set you back on soothing like 10 a set of 4 “coasters” …

    But isonoe just rocks …

PS – Don’t forget to use something like this bellow any external hard drive or even the laptop, if you don’t use a stand and plan on having it sit on the DJ table

Tennis balls always worked fine for turntables.. half a ball or a whole ball with a hole in it.. one under each foot.

It still amazes me how people spend thousands on a new DJ booths and they dont know how to build a vibration free table, MORONS!

I’m gonna go all anti jog wheels again with my Novation Twitch propaganda but really can’t stress it enough how awesome it is to use a touch strip instead of jog wheels. No, definitely not for the scratchers among us, but if you use jog wheels only for tempo bend and moving around in the track… you will pee yourself in excitement over this light weight yet robust sex machine.
