Digital DJs and producers should start making a list and checking it twice. 2014 is almost here, and with it quickly comes the NAMM convention and a whole slew of new software and hardware. We’ve put together a wish list of gear and features that we’d like to see next year – read our thoughts and add your own wishes in the comments.
TOP DJ REQUESTS OF 2013
In this section we’ll cover the items that we’ve heard time and again throughout the year. These are products that, if popular demand on the internet fueled production, would have been to market ages ago. Like how DJs handle song requests, companies have to decide if the people who keep asking for these products are actually going to use them and if they’ll fit into the product cycle.
Traktor Kontrol Z4 Mixer
Native Instruments has had DJs asking for a Kontrol Z4 mixer since the very day that the Kontrol Z2 was first leaked. They’ve also had DJs asking for “just the middle section” of a Kontrol S4 since the launch of that product back in 2010. Will a four channel mixer from the Traktor team ever make an appearance?
Serato DJ + Traktor Remote (for iOS)
It would be awesome to see these two software developers do a switch up in the mobile application arena and focus in the direction that the other went.
For Serato, developing an iOS app that has a similar feature set as Serato DJ Intro could be lucrative just from a business perspective. Like Traktor DJ, the app could have basic MIDI controller compatibility, and let DJs prepare tracks with cues, beatgrids, loops, etc.
A remote application for Traktor is also a reasonable request, although Serato Remote’s functionalities are probably most ideal for DVS DJs who aren’t looking for another piece of hardware to put into their workflow.
Bonus Wish: More mobile app developers should follow Mixvibes’ lead and bring their successful applications to Android.
Serato DJ Bridge
The one key part of Serato’s future that wasn’t addressed by CEO Sam Gribben in his video announcement about DVS slowly migrating to the Serato DJ platform was what would happen to the great experiment known as Serato Bridge. Linking Serato and Ableton was an incredible feat – but didn’t take off.
It’s time to revisit the idea and figure out how to do it right in the new Serato DJ paradigm (and with Live 9). At the very least, having a way to send MIDI out from Serato DJ would allow use of Ableton in parallel.
Traktor / Maschine Integration
One of Native Instruments’ biggest selling products is Maschine. You don’t have to be an insider to realize that – just look at all the models, upgrades, add-ons, and sound packs that the company has made for the Maschine product family over the last two years.
The one critical piece of the puzzle that we’re still waiting for is Maschine integration with their other products – namely Traktor. We’ve seen long-time Maschine proponents like Richie Hawtin and Dubfire start to move to Ableton Push running alongside Traktor. Surely the time has come to release (at the very least) a simple syncronized and routed audio channel from Maschine into Traktor? We could even see Maschine taking over the functionality of the Remix Decks entirely – maybe in Traktor Pro 3.
Record Store / DJ Library In The Cloud
We’re really waiting for someone to nail this interaction – recreating the true feeling of buying and discovering music that came with the traditional brick-and-mortar store. At the same time, this site could solve the problem of ever-expanding DJ music libraries by a sustainable subscription service for DJs – Spotify for DJs, if you will. The service would ideally make it possible to have access to loads of music for performances while only owning a smaller personal collection of tracks.
Right now it looks like Pulselocker is closest to attaining this vision. It’s still in the early stages – to ensure that the service is one that DJs will use and can rely on will require a sense of community and proven reliability for finding tracks. Seamless integration with a DJ software might also be a required feature – similar to Virtual DJ’s Content Unlimited.
Unified Track/Collection Metadata Across DJ Platforms
Someone needs to sit all the software manufacturers at a table and get them to sign a treaty over track metadata. Building cue points, finding the right BPM and key, analyzing waveforms, setting loops – these are time-consuming processes that DJs have to do for every single track.
Obviously, each company stands to retain users by keeping their track collections and metadata proprietary. But they also stand to gain new users from other softwares who have never shopped around because their collection is hundreds of hours of prep work that can’t be migrated.
A PRODUCER’S WISHLIST
Producers want their software and hardware to move forward as well. Here are a few of the requests we’ve heard that could use some serious advancement in 2014:
Realtime DAW Project Collaboration
Being able to work with other producers remotely will be a convenient reality in the future of production. Remember Google Wave’s realtime document collaboration with large groups? It seems like there’s very little getting in the way of building that same level of collaboration into Ableton, FL Studio, Logic, or the forthcoming Bitwig.
We’ve seen advances on this front from startups like Splice and Blend.io this year – but they tend to focus on non-realtime collaboration. If next-generation gaming consoles can have 64 players interacting in a virtual world and manipulating objects and elements, surely we can do the same for music projects?
Unleash The Gloves
Without a doubt Imogen Heap’s glove project was one of the most talked-about hardware experiments of the last year. With a team (including Tim Exile) behind the project, we’re hoping that the wearable controller hardware could realistically see some type of commercial release in some form in the coming year.
In case you missed it, watch Imogen demonstrate the Ableton-controlling gloves in this TED talk.
More Competition: Bitwig Studio Release
We’ve been hearing about Bitwig for two years – the team of ex-Ableton engineers who decided to build their own DAW from the ground up. Unfortunately, aside from a very select invite-only Beta, there’s been very little outward-facing movement towards an actual release. The good news is that the development team will be at NAMM 2014 – where they’re claiming they’ll announce the official launch date (according to a recent holiday email from the Bitwig).
Either way, more competition in the DAW world is certainly a good thing – even if only to encourage the bigger fish to incorporate some of the coolest features into their own softwares.
Watch a demo video of Bitwig Studio’s powerful MIDI clip editing capabilties.

I wish native instruments worked with DJ techtools to make a daw for producers
Wish to get support NS7 II -with HID- under Traktor
This certainly isn’t a first but has to be one of the most passionately desired wishlist items:
Ableton developing and releasing either a dedicated standalone DJ application (for PCs not for tablets) OR a DJ add-on for Live OR at the least, a DJ “mode” for Live. What I don’t understand about Ableton’s refusal to accommodate even the most minimal additional DJ features, is that we’re simply requesting UI options: the underlying technology is already there in Live. There are so many DJs using Live and the documentation even lists DJing as a prime use of the product, so why doesn’t Ableton respond to this? Not to mention that they are leaving a LOT of money on the table by not producing a dedicated DJing product…
Have you tried Stagecraft Studios software inside Ableton ?
I wish a cheaper price for propellerhead reason!
How about a controller for just the effects section of Traktor for those of us that used CDJ-2000s and a stand alone mixer in HID mode? I’m thinking the top half of an X1 by itself.
I would like to see a ‘Kontrol S1’. Take the S4, but throw out the mixer part. So basically a controller with knobs for effects, load and switch deck button, a jogwheel, pitchfader, loop and transport section. I play in pubs from time to time and my S4 is sometimes giving me a hard time to fit in the existing gear or when changing deejays. With a S1 you could put one left and one right of the existing external mixer. Ideally it would come with an internal sound card too. As mentioned in the comments Denon already did an effort with the DN-SC2000, but i would prefer a S1 with native HID communication and the existing lay-out of the S4.
I want to have a controller X1-size with a jogwheel and usb-thumbdrive standalone player. Use them along side my Z2. Then i take two to replace the cdj’s. So small cdj without cd functionality, but with the ability to play from usb or phone ( via cable)… Come on NI…
I think VST or AU integration into Traktor would be cool…
Yes, it would finally be able to handle some really nice effects and Maschine software internally.
You can already technically link the Maschine and use it as an F1 already if you muck with the controller editor. However, I do want traktor to be able to recognize Maschine as its own entity and treat it like a track that was otherwise loaded into the deck.
I nearly flipped out when I first glanced at the ‘Z4’ image. I’m kind of simultaneously anticipating/dreading the day NI finally releases that product. It’s exactly what I need… and what my budget doesn’t.
Maybe a lower end DJ controller from NI could be great for a starting Dj
Not sure if it has been discussed already, but..
I think the Midi Drum Pants (yeah, its a real thing) deserve a mention in response to the “Unleash the Gloves” section.
http://www.drumpants.com/
Omg the z4 and traktor with machine would be absolutely amazing
I would really like a Native Intruments app for iPad just to control Traktor Pro effects wirelessly with similar XY pads as on the TRAKTOR DJ app.
My top 5 Wish List
1. My wife supports my interest in djing
2. Maschine and Traktor integration
3. Ableton develops a new dj software or plugin that has tempo variations and wave visualization. This will make number 2 happen
4. More gigs that I don’t have to play Top 40
5. The untimely death of trap music
let me know how that first one works out…
An oversize kontrol x1 with a jogwheel, use 2 of them instead of cdjs, will never happen though!
Denon do exactly one of those… DN-SC2000. The link is below. You can use it for 2 decks, you can get another one and use it for 4 decks, or you can go the whole hog and get 4 of them and dedicate each unit to a deck.
The downside is that with a mixer they will cost more than a S2 and S4 respectively.
Now if only NI did the same sort of thing, plus a Z4 mixer with a built in USB hub…
Ditch the effects controls on each unit and voila.
In actual fact I’m gonna go further… Make everything NI in modules.
Ok still have USB conectivity but have it on the side of each unit then a small male to female plug on one unit could plug in to the next “USB bridges” and make them so that they click together to form a streamlined unit.
Therefore you can have an F1, X1, a Maschine, a Z4 mixer (with an extra filter knob for low-mid like an Allan & Heath, our newly invented Jog wheels…
Ooooh-ooooh and an iPad frame that has our track selection right there in front of us and that can also be used like a Kaoss pad.
You could even have NI’s own “waveform strip” between each jog wheel, looking a bit like Serato’s waveform. with BPM and Phase at the top of each. Or group them together.
The possibilities aren endless and I bet the whole lot would be cheaper than a Pioneer or Denon CDJ set up.
I’m sure clubs would look at that too as a standard, being that every part is replacable and only 3 cables in and out of the whole thing.

Open Serato Dj Software which you can use with every audio interface.. Just like Traktor
Traktor + Serato metadata would be the killer app of the year!
Serato will be added to Rekord Buddy in 2014.
I spoke with Serato, Native Instruments and Pioneer at WMC in 2007 in relation to creating a meta file format to/from which all dj systems metadata could be transformed. At that stage Serato were well up for it. They didn’t have time to prioritise building converters themselves, and loved the idea of an open format that wasn’t controlled by a single manufacturer. NI just built their own converter to go one way from Serato to Traktor, Pioneer were offended at the thought that anyone would want to move away from them. That was pre RecordBox
The file format is the easy part. Just an exchange format wouldn’t be enough. I learned a lot thru just adding support for Rekordbox and Traktor so adding support to Rekord Buddy for the others ones is easy now.
The last traktor update (2.6.6) covers the integration of the remix deck and both Maschine. Anyone with a maschine mikro or regular will have two products (F1 + Maschine)
a gemini g4v with twich’s touch strips (no jogs)
DDJ-TX, a bvridge between ableton and traktor (an official one) upgraded traktor mapping facility (cuz the current one sucks bad), getting VST in traktor, maschine DJ, DAW colaboration website, bitwig and a DJTT new controller 🙂
I’d like to see dj software companies implement maps on pitch displays that indicate keys as the slider is moved through the range (up/down). Obviously this would require referencing the starting key and would probably standardize the Camelot Wheel.
Android Traktor DJ app!
More USB slots in a mac book!
So I don’t need a hub!
Please, a 4 channel novation twitch!!! I don’t wanna jogwheels and pitch faders! I just wanna 4 channels, a touchstrip for seeking along my tracks and lots of pads to slice and mash my tunes!!! 🙂
I really live my Twitch, but I would not hesitate to upgrade to 4 channels if that was a direction Novation chose to go. I’d ideally like to see multi-color LEDs everywhere, including the touch strips (to help indicate which deck is playing), or X-Y pads (Chaos Pad style) would work equally well, but this unit should accept power as an option because the older version didn’t, and that was a problem for some. Another smart move would be to have at least a 2 port USB hub built in, for possible future expansions. All-in-all, I wouldn’t change much.
…And let’s praise that Novation would make huge improvements in the build quality -some buttons on mine were clicking only on one corner after 2 or 3 months-, and change the knobs, as all these aspects on the twitch sucks a lot… (I know the twitch is cheap, but it doesn’t justify all the flaws and the complete lack of support from Novation)… oh, and add also another fx unit for compatibilty with serato DJ as using the twitch under DJ is a hassle, and not speaking about the odd behavior of touchstrips…
I haven’t noticed a problem with the build quality, but I got mine right when it was released. I still use it almost every day with the monthly trip to the club. Maybe I’m just not-as-rough on mine, or maybe the first gen’s were built sturdier? Who knows?
Realtime DAW Project Collaboration – are you hear about Ohm Studio???
A gig
More MIDI Controllers like NS7II, with motorized platters!
Being able to change the key of a track in Serato (without modifying the playback speed / tempo).
Actually you CAN remote control Traktor with the Numark Orbit 😉
having the soundcloud library accesible through spotify, or the other way around. Not necessarilly a DJ or producer thing, more for people who want to discover new music.
Come to think about it, I actually want a universal mobile music player that can play music from all different Internet sources, in offline mode.
If I’d sugarcoat it this player would also let you beatgrid them and add cue points in an open format that interfaces with the big DJ softwares.
Oh yeah, and beat warping in Traktor (ableton like) instead of rigid beatgrids. thank you.
proper itunes integration/ crates for traktor or at least smart playlist that update
My number one wish would be for Maschine and Traktor sync. It just makes sense and I can’t understand why it isn’t standard. My live set-up would finally be complete and stream-lined.
Also, I’d love to see midi-sync between apps on iPad.
This is so very important. Once it’s completed and Maschine works in HID mode with Traktor we can finally forget about the wasted effort on Traktor’s Remix Decks and the Kontrol F1.
NI package… maschine, komplete and traktor on linux platform (preferably on red hat).
or a Z4
traktor mapping needs more condition slots (4 would be great), ordered commands and the pitch and gain controls on remix deck slots should be mappable. while we’re at it, throw in a flux reverse
A 4 channel mixer and Maschine integration for Traktor would be the best thing I could ask for.
+1 for BitWig. I’ve been following the updates closely on reddit.com/r/bitwig . It looks like it will be a serious game changer. I think pricing will be the ultimate factor on if it will be successful. If it can price itself closer to Logic’s price instead of the (insane) pricing of Ableton, it will be on everyones wish list in 2014
New S4 with displays and no need of a computer!
Similar to this? http://www.djtechtools.com/2013/10/02/what-the-next-traktor-controller-will-probably-look-like/
Vestax VCI 480 and a new Serato DJ GUI!
I wish NI would have given the s2 a dedicated filter knob, they should have setup the mixer portion like the z1.
How about a real, true 4 deck controller this year? Every 4 deck controller is 4 mixer channels with 2 decks with deck flipping. It’s about time we get a monster controller with 4 physical deck controllers to go with the 4 channels on the mixer. I have been hoping to see this come for so long
how is the Midi fighter 3D or the pioneer ddj sx not in here….. i would do anything for one
None of the things on this list are out yet- it’s things that we want to see released in 2014. I want a Pionner HID controller for traktor, as good as DDJ-SX is
Agreed, where’s the DDJ-TX?
you can use a .tsi for use DDJ-SX with traktor

I just simply wish for traktor S2/S4 MK2 controllers to finally freaking work with iOS7, i mean jeeez is this to much to ask for?
They do! What are you still having problems with?
unfortunately not quite yet DAN , audio drop outs n glitches with iOS7 (ipad air) http://www.native-instruments.com/forum/showthread.php?212868-Traktor-Dj-and-kontrol-s2-mk-2-%28ios7-fix%29
+1000000 for traktor remote control
Has anybody seen the pointblank interview with mk? He talked about maschine, and said that its best to learn it now, cause ni is planning to make it a stand alone unit within three years, so i wonder how traktor integration will work out then.
Hmm, I’ll have to watch that one!
Have you got a link to it? I can’t find it.

Watch at around the 17th minute…
bitwig sent out a holiday emial yesterday, REJOICE!
said they would be at NAMM in January and would name the release date then!!!
the comparison with a Game Console is great. Using a joystick, to heave the skirts.
:E
And maybe to check out what we can do with an Tunderbolt-Cable.

;E,
I wish dj tech tools would make a pro USB hub
yess that would be great!!
yes, i agree~~~
we actually designed one and never made it! What would you be willing to pay for a really pro hub?
Hey Ean. I think a good price point would be $70-$100. I had approached a few of the top manufacturers years ago with the idea of a 19″ rack mount hub since nothing like that was available, but was told that they weren’t in the accessory business. I think the need is here for some sort of cable management system. Not only in the DJ world but in the studio world. How many devices now are USB, I have too many hubs and cables that are just a mess. i’m sure you could make something half or 1/3 the size of the midi fighter and add 12 ports, 6 on top of each other all in a good quality design.
Velcro straps seem to be a very cost-effective, versatile solution to cable wrangling. You can even use the straps to secure things to each other (such as cables to equipment).
By the way, i hope you had a great Christmas.
I would buy one for sure.
It should have locks, that USB Connectors cant “fall” out during working and the USB Metal Shield should be completely plugged, and it should have an internal Powersupply with Wide Range Voltage (no more Wall Warts). Ports should be at least 4 Ports and only on one Side of the box.
Pay…. if its really good, ill pay between 30 – 50€
I think you can really desing that stuff and there is a market, not only for Djs!
I’d buy one and recommended them to everyone I know. Send me one to Review (#^.^#)
My Macbook just busted one usb so I have only one usb functioning!! The only one I would ever buy is a DJTT approved usb hub! I only use the Mac for DJ so there that!!
I agree 70-100, it would be worth it.
Hi Ean,
At the very least, it would probably be a great idea for you guys to carry a top-choice USB Hub in the store. (Even if it’s not made by you guys)
Pioneer DDJ-TX
I really wish NI double the number of modifiers and condition slots in Traktor. (yea, just me sounding like a broken record :)) Merry Christmas everyone!
Seconded Stewe… Seconded.
And thirded! It’d make mapping SO much easier!
USB hub built into the Z1 and every future mixer
Dvs support for traktor dj on ios
A smaller, jog-wheel free DDJ-SX. Ideally from Native Instruments. In other words: a Kontrol Z4, but with most features from X1 and F1 built in.
So basically you want a Novation Twitch?
Yes, but with a built-in stand-alone 4-channel mixer
Just out of curiosity: why de you prefer having a Z4, X1 and F1 all build into one unit rather than taking the individual modules?
The combination of X1 and a (potential) Z4 would still have quite some overlap (browse and loop section, sync, FX section, hot cue buttons). That’s why I’d prefer a compact all-in-one device with optimised layout.
Spotify for DJ’s would-be be perfect! Always the right tunes with you… And it’s updated every time you check, so you will discover more music in less time.
Less time prepping and searching is more time playing for me.
Spotify !!
You gotta be kidding me.
Fuck cloud dj’ing, we need wav files for proper sound.
256 kbps streaming…. LOL
i agree.
But for small rooms 256 kbps is ok.
on bigger ones you need full pressure.
but most of all, you can’t hear an difference on good speakers.
there is probably so many non-proffesional meanings about the quality of digital music out there, so i will post this. (and i’m worked in programming business)
AIFF and WAV is only an container. ALAC is truly lossless.
>>(when you decode it between truly lossless formats, every bit will stay the same) <<
today is an better decoding with the lame decoder, so you had really nice 256kbps files as well.
what i wanna say: a "good" 256kbps file is not really bad at all. but for the big feeling and an crispier sound and the real pressure on an open-air, you had to play lossless files. Indoor up to 10kw you can play also with 256kbps. And i had to repeat this: if the speakers are nice, you can't hear an difference. If the Speaker had the right vibration, you can't hear …..
but i agree: i feel more save with lossless files, because how many clubs have good speakers or even a vibrating floor
The unified track collection is something that I’ll be able to help with in 2014. Stay tuned 🙂
Figured you might be up to something like that, Damien. Shoot me an email when you can – dan (at) djtechtools (dot) com
MERRY CHRISTMAS TECHTOOLS!
Great list Dan, we can only hope that they’ll all come true in the new year. you should be the one to try to get unified metadata agreements from all of the companies, DJTT can make it happen!
And where’s Android on that list?!?!?
Android support is mentioned in the section about mobile apps 🙂
Missed Bonus Wish! :þ ! Thanks Dan, and Merry Christmas!
4 Channel “Z” mixer from Traktor is on the top of my list!
