A few years ago, any aspiring DJ would buy a budget turntable/CD and mixer combo before eventually moving on to some high-end kit. Today, most will either go for a cheap controller setup to use with their existing computer, or jump straight into the top-flight gear that they see used by their heroes. However, there are still a lot of situations in which a budget mixer can be incredibly useful, so we’ve gone in search of the best mixer for under $300.
TURNTABLE/MEDIA-PLAYER USERS
There are many people for whom using a computer to mix is neither desirable nor necessary. A decent laptop for DJ use can be had reasonably cheaply, but it’s still a hefty investment if you don’t already own a suitable one, which makes that $200 controller look like less of a bargain. Plus, there are lots of DJs who choose to use other formats—whether it be vinyl, USB devices, or even CDs (remember those?). Whilst there are a few options out there (like Pioneer’s XDJ-R1), that generally means separate media players with a mixer, and not everybody needs to drop $1000 on an install-level mixer.
A CENTRAL HUB
Fundamentally, a DJ mixer is a box that allows the mixing of a number of input sources, and the distribution of the resulting sound – a device that in even a modest home setup can be incredibly valuable. In my studio setup, my Pioneer DJM-700 is the central location for all my connections—controllers, decks, audio interfaces, and even other mixers go into it, with outputs to powered speakers and my computer.
Even the cheapest DJ mixers will generally have at least four inputs and two outputs—perhaps not all playable simultaneously, but at least accessible. It could be argued that a small ‘studio’ mixer would do a similar job, but those tend to be more endowed with microphone and instrument level inputs, and if you have a lot of DJ-specific gear, a DJ mixer will usually offer you better bang for your buck.
MIXING EXTERNALLY
Here’s a little industry secret for you (shhh): All DJ mixers work pretty much the same way.
Of course, there are bountiful rewards to be had when you spend a small fortune on a mixer. Sound quality, durability, and advanced features all improve as the price tag goes up, but as mentioned above, all DJ mixers basically do the same thing. So if you’re getting gigs, and finding that venues can’t (or won’t) accommodate your all-in-one controller setup, then you may want to go modular, for example, running an X1/Audio 6 combo through the currently installed mixer.
But just because the club has a shiny DJM-900NXS doesn’t mean you need to own one. A carefully chosen sub-$300 mixer will offer all the functionality needed to get the hang of external mixing, and may even benefit you long term, as you won’t be reliant on specific mixer features that may not be available at your next gig. If the only mixer you’ve ever used is a shiny $2000 Pioneer, you’re going to get a shock when you roll up to the club and find a rusty Xone:62 with a broken crossfader and two line faders missing.
Having established a few reasons for scoring a sub-$300 mixer, it’s time to look at what kind of gear your money will get you:
STARTING FROM THE BOTTOM…
At the real budget end of the market, it’s perfectly possible to pick up a usable mixer for around the $100 mark. Back in the early 2000s when I worked for an equipment retailer, we sold Numark’s Battle Pak by the truckload, which contained belt-drive turntables and the DM-900/905 mixer, otherwise called the Blue Dog. I’m pretty confident in saying it was the most widely bought mixer in the world for quite a few years.
As basic as it gets—two channels, phono/line switchable gain pots but no EQs, and mic input—the Blue Dog served as a perfectly functional introduction to hardware mixing, and its spirit lives on today in Numark’s M101. It’s a little more refined with a two-band EQ making an appearance, and there’s a version with a USB connection for $20 more; it’s only a single stereo in and out, so you won’t be running a multichannel setup with it, but it makes for an easy way to record a mix to your computer.
Gemini make the PS1, a very similar mixer, for around the same price, although they don’t offer a USB option on that model.
KINGS OF THE BUDGET MIXER?
Ahh, Behringer. Often derided, the German brand has taken some flack over their DJ kit in the past. To be fair, a lot of that was justified. Their original VMX series, to put it kindly, was not very good. A lot of that was down to the faders, which seemed to be simply unsuitable for DJing. I was also not a fan of the DJX700, which seemed to be very prone to suffering dramatic wear and tear, even in the face of simple bedroom usage.
However, Behringer have stepped up their game considerably in recent years, with their CMD line of controllers getting much love from the DJTT community, and their new NOX series of mixers appear to be of incredibly good value, starting with the NOX101, which has a street price of around $100, a three-band EQ, adjustable curves on each fader, and balanced outputs. Frankly, that’s pretty unbelievable for the price, so on specs alone, the NOX101 is untouchable.
Going up the range, the NOX404 (around $180) has built-in effects, XLR outputs, a USB connection, and an Infinium crossfader, which I can attest to being a superb fader, having used it on the Mackie d.2.
Whether you’re sacrificing quality for features is the big question there. Without testing it, we can’t really comment at this point.
ITCHY AND SCRATCHY
One of the smartest new ideas in budget mixers comes from DJ Tech. The DIF-1S ($200 street) is, at its heart, quite a simple mixer, comparable to the basic Numark and Gemini models mentioned above—the difference being they threw an innoFADER into it and instantly turned it into a decent little scratch mixer. Now, it is a Mini innoFADER, not the full-size, massively adjustable model, but it’s a great fader, nonetheless. I have one in my NI Kontrol Z2, and it does a great job.
The other thing that sets apart the DIF-1S is its DVS input/output section, which lets you leave, for example, your turntables permanently hooked up to the mixer, and easily connect your DVS soundcard in and out as required. That makes it super-simple to use as a home mixer for DJs who gig regularly with their laptop and interface but don’t want to have to mess around hooking up their entire bedroom rig every time they want to practice at home.
An interesting development that might impact DJ Tech, though, is the imminent release of the Mini innoFADER as an aftermarket accessory. If the price is keen enough, it has the potential to turn the cheapest, most basic mixer into a bit of a scratch weapon, and at that stage the unique selling point of the DIF-1S might go out of the window.
MORE MONEY, FEWER FEATURES?
There’s an old adage from the world of engineering and design, which I’ll paraphrase here to suit our needs:
Quality.
Feature-packed.
Cheap.
Pick two.
Under $300, there will be compromises in any mixer you buy. Unless a manufacturer has somehow achieved a miracle, there’s a good chance that a mixer for $300 with four channels, built-in FX, and USB hookups will not be of equivalent build and sound quality to one with two channels and no USB, or a mixer with a similarly expanded feature set that costs $1000.
That’s not always the case, of course, but let’s take the Denon DN-X120 as an example. With specs not much better than the $80 Numark M101, it’s very basic on the feature front: two channels, EQ, balanced outputs on TRS jacks, adjustable crossfader curve—but no USB, no FX, no special DVS hookup. This is a very straightforward mixer, but you’re paying for a higher level of build and sound quality, which comes from years of manufacturing “install-level” kit. I’ve never heard anyone complain about the sound quality of Denon gear, and even if it isn’t the most flashy equipment out there, you know you’re getting something which will last.
Likewise the Allen & Heath Xone:23, which officially retails at quite a bit more than our $300 limit, but it can be had for $299 if you look around. I haven’t used the 23 yet, but I have spent a lot of time with its predecessor, the 22, and unless they’ve taken a drastic step backwards, I’m pretty confident the sound quality of the 23 will blow any sub-$100 mixer out of the water. And they last, too. I used Xone:22 mixers for DJ-workshop sessions with teenagers, and those mixers took a beating.
The Pioneer DJM-250 is a strange one. Here in the UK it sells everywhere for £180—dead on our $300 limit according to XE.com, and that includes VAT. Pioneer list it on their own site at $350, but it’s hard to find in stock at many US online dealers, and the street price seems to vary widely. It’s definitely one to consider, though, if you play out on Pioneer gear at gigs, with a very similar feel to their pro-level kit. Don’t expect anything in the way of digital or Rekordbox integration at this price, however.
HERE’S WHERE YOU COME IN
In the weeks to come, we’re planning on taking an even more in-depth look at a handful of mixers in this range. I’m pretty sure one of the Behringer NOX mixers needs to be on this list (if the quality even comes close to the specs, then they could be absolutely killer), but beyond that, I’m totally open to suggestions. So, is there a mixer I’ve discussed above that you want to see used and abused? Do you own any of them, and have deep buyers’ remorse, or believe you’ve found budget mixing nirvana?
Let us know which sub-$300 mixers you’d like to see reviewed in the comments below and we’ll do our best to make it happen.
I use my NI Z2 at home during the weekends but during the week when I’m not at home, I use a DJM 400 I bought second-hand.
I bought a DJ Tech DIF-1S, based on your review. But I had no Master Cue, WTF!
It’s not a scratch mixer if you can’t hear what you are scratching, don’t buy this mixer, and stop recommending it to your readers. You should let your readers know when you mention it that you can’t hear the master through your headphones.
I returned it and got a Stanton M.203, this is my budget mixer of choice. Every option you want on a scratch mixer! I recommend it highly. It is my back up mixer, I can always trust it to save the day.
I got my done 62 for 400…

I would live to see a review of the American Audio 14MXR .It’s been on my Amazon wishlist for ages, but I can’t find one to get some hands on time with
One of the last mixers on the planet to offer REAL EQ kill switches, the Behringer NOX303 was my pro DJ mixer for several years. I put that thing through hell and it never skipped a beat! I’ve been through over a dozen mixers in almost 20yrs of DJing and it’s the only one that survived and is in my practice room today. Behringer certainly changed my mind about their company with this gem of a mixer.
Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention built in FX, three channels, XLR outs, and a USB port! The damn thing is incredible…
im set with my ecler nuo 2
I got my VCI-380 at guitar center for 200 bucks. It was the floor model and I traded some old midi keyboard I didnt use. They gave me 14 days to return it if anything was wrong with it. Ive had for 2 years now.

If you’re going barebones the stanton m.203 is pretty good, and cheap at 80 bucks on amazon right now
If I want to start mixing externally, can I for say buy a Behrigner NOX404, hook it up to my laptop having traktor scratch running and mix with “mp3 vinlys”? Would this setup be possible or would I still need an audio interface. Moreover would it be possible to midi map the NOX 404 to traktor so that internal FX also can be controlled?
An answer would be really appreciated thanks
neither of those things are possible sorry mate
Ecler Nuo 2 would be a great one to include
I’d recommend the Technics sh-ex1200. These days it can be had for a song and is still the DMC championship mixer. I realize folks turn their nose up at it these days, but I’ve been really happy with mine. You don’t see many mixers on the market today where the space below the fader is worn to metal from years of flicking the fader…
How about the Technics sh-ex1200. These days it can be had for a song and is still the DMC championship mixer. Numark M6 for beginners to budget folks ftw. I had a gemini 828x for the same price point as the numark, and the faders crackled and sound went completely.
I got this M6 and it feel great.
Save your money and get some decent gear. Behringer?, DJ Tech? mid to low end gear blows
I swear I’m no Behringer basher, but if you ever go inside of a DDM4000 or a Nox, you will find lots of big globs of glue holding things together, and sometimes those globs have come loose, and sometimes those globs have melted and then re-hardened, leaving spiderwebs all over the innards. I have a hard time imagining mixers made to that standard will last. On the flip side, I’d like to echo what others have said about buying used. I have had nothing but good luck buying used mixers, by brands such as Rane, Ecler, Urei, Allen & Heath, Tascam, etc (Pioneer and Vestax, not so much). The Ecler Nuo series and sometimes HAK 360s can be had for well under $300, same with the Xone 02, 22, and 32. I bought a Urei 1601s for $175. The Rane TTM56 and sometimes Empath can also go used for under $300. Right now I have Rane TTM 52, 54, and 54i. All three are in perfect working condition, sound great, and cost me a COMBINED $250. For me, there’s no other way to go.
ever watched the rane quality these days, plastic pots, how low can you go and still every brandvuses the cheapass 2/4molted plastic rca’s. There just ain t no pro tables. they’re all diy projects which their cheapass trs in/outputs, but everyone keeps buying that shit….
I own the Dj Tech DIF-1S and am very happy with it. I’ve been using it over several months (got it shortly after it hit the market,) both at home and for a weekly internet radio show. It’s held up really well. The crossfader has impressed all of the turntablist DJs who’ve used it. The DVS passthrough works really well with the added bonus of making sets combining digital and vinyl very smooth.
I found that scratching with it was impossible with no Master Cue! I sent mine back.
Right now there’s a Vestax PMC 280 on ebay for under $300.
I have the Ecler’s Nuo 4 mixer, which is an often underestimated and cheap mixer I got for 200€ (around 250$?)
It includes 4 channel, and in the middle there’s a midi section with rotary encoders, push buttons, and a switch button allowing to switch between 3 midi pages. I use that section for browsing my tracks, loops, and assigning effects in traktor. Added to my DVS system (audio 6) this combo makes an incredibly powerful setup that I really love.
And by the way, Ecler’s sound quality is known to be one of the most accurate and clear out on the market (fighting against brands like A&H) but all of that for a price ridiculously low!
(enhanced with chroma caps, of course 😉 )
I own a Nuo 4 myself… Lent it to somebody a while ago, I must get it back! I agree that Ecler stuff is solid but they don’t seem to be producing DJ product anymore, sadly.
The Numark X6 is a pretty solid mixer. Got a display unit for $50 from a Best Buy closing its music section. Street price is definitely higher but under the $300 mark. Aux in and 2 line/phono inputs, 3band EQs with kill buttons, excellent faders, and tap-to-tempo FX which can be applied to single channels or all. Not bad for a 2 “+” channel mixer.
Vestax vmc oo4 , have it for years , took beating in clubs, bars at home , super sounding balanced outputs , 4 channels , it falls from 2 meters wall to the floor and nothing but few scratches happened , amazing , well not sure is the cheapest mixer but it can be found for good price on e bay
black version with fx it is …
I’m a fan of Vestax kit, but they haven’t brought a new mixer for quite some time, and I’m looking at recent models really. Would be cool if they brought out some new mixers this year…
I own the behringer NOX 404 rane 61 and 62. I use it with my sl2 mostly
and its awesome, I pull off every scratch on it with ease. I have had it
for about an year and it has been rock solid never let me down.
but have you tried them out of the box with voltage on them?… No you’re right, i think innofaders are just cheap layoffs, compared to the rane ones and ususing 80% plastic which has to keep the slider in place is just cheapio. Like its real high tech, don’t let them fool you…. plastic glider. rip off junk. metal or bearings where to expensive…. Just take a objetive view , what do you get…..
I say save your money and get what you need the 1st time….because you will end up with extra gear that you will have to sell and take a big hit on the mark down.
Great article Mojaxx!
Id say a used DJM600/DJM400 would be obvious contenders for a budget mixer.
Also agree on both Denon X-120 & AH22, had them both as a backups at some stage.
-WarpNote
Thanks for the feedback WarpNote… I’ll agree with everything you say, except about the DJM-600… I hated the sound of that mixer! I’m willing to bet a lot of these budget mixers will sound better… 😉
Hehe, yeah they probably do, somehow we still got along with those in the clubs for quite som time… Reason for bringing them up is mostly the layout, some similarities to the current club standards. Then again, as you point out in your article: “All DJ mixers work pretty much the same way.” 😉
Allen & Heath Xone 42 please!
Way too far over our budget I’m afraid. The 23 barely scrapes in!
Numark’s DXM mixers used to be great. Now they are known as X series. X6 is quite decent mixer with a lot of features and the price is below 300$. I used to own X1, it was the lowest priced of the X series, but the sound quality was great ( it has 2 USB ports) and there is some Alesis technology integrated in the unit. There was no white noise when you use the USB connections even if you push the gains and EQs to the maximum. After two years I have sold it, and after some serious abuses there were no signs of wear at all. The faders worked perfectly and there was no wear on the faceplate. I think that X6 should be a great mixer considering my experience with its little brother X1. I think that Numark X1 is discontinued now, but x6 and x9 are still selling. These are great mixers but quite unpopular, and it’s about time some to review them.
A few mentions of the X series in these comments, I’ll definitely take a closer look at those. Thanks.
I have a X9 with Innofaders as my main mixer. I love it, FX, kill switches, FX on the mic channel! The thing has been bashed hard and is still going strong.
Nowadays, beginner mixers are pretty freaking awesome in quality. My first mixer was a Gemini 676 back in 1998. It had a cool 3 second sample pad but the rest of the mixer was utter garbage, and I could never find a replacement fader. Then I was lucky enough to find a used $400 05pro although I should have gone with the Numark SM-1 that was new for the same price, more features and same faders. I just wanted to same mixer that Q-bert had hehe.
i was always interested in getting a small cheap mixer for gigs when a DJ setup is not available. i ended up taking my friends advice and putting my xone 62 in a thrift shop suitcase for easy transportation 😀
I am interested in buying the Numark M6 USB 4 Channel – can you review this mixer. I’m curious to know your thoughts. This mixer fits in the “Feature packed” and “cheap” category. http://www.numark.com/product/m6usb
If you can’t review this mixer… any of the “C” (rack mixers) or “M” series mixers found on this page – http://www.numark.com/product_category/mixers
They are all priced for budget DJs and like to know how they stand up to your tests.
Cheers
the NOX 404 is one of the cheapest mixers you can get that has built in effects and an FX loop (though the built in effects leave a bit to be desired). It’s also decent build and sound quality. It does have a few quirks to it, some weird features which you’ll probably never need and can be accidentally be turned on, but overall it’s a nice mixer for the price, especially with the added FX loop.
I’d be very curious to see what happens with the DJ Tech mixer. I am waiting for their updated version to come out because it includes MIDI and onboard filters. Definitely do a review of it, if you can. They also have a four channel version coming out.
Something about Rane?
Yeah, but we are all (almost) dreamers here)
I have a Behringer Nox606 that I bought to use as a poor man’s version of the Allen and Heath Xone 92. Obviously the A&H has superior parts but I have to say I’ve been EXTREMELY pleased with the Behringer. It has six channels and allow for all sorts of routing for effects and hardware. I’ve used it on a number of club systems and have never noticed any distortion. Best of all you can pick one up for 300-400 USD online.
I think an important element that’s a bit harder to capture here because of the price variability is used gear. There’s a fair amount of solid mixers that can be snatched up for under $300, but with new street prices well above that – it’s just about hunting craigslist and ebay.
A good point Dan, although I did observe that the mid-range ($300-600) market for mixers appears even more sparse today, leaving the pickings less rich on the used market than they once were… Unless you’re very lucky and score a $1K mixer for $300. But then I’d be asking some serious questions about the kind of life that mixer has lead!
Pioneer DJM-250 is the killer beast, available for an unbeatable price of 195€ at Thomann in Europe, it has an absolutely clear sound, standard upper class Pioneer EQs and plus filters for each channel, percect mixer for home studio or bars, get two of them, this price is a bargain, got mine one year ago for 280€ and even this price was great for a mixer like that
I had Xone 22 and multiple problems with that mixer. I returned two China made models as they had hiss sound in left headphone (both of them). If you are starting Pioneer is far better option than any other mixer. It’s basically a must for new DJ. Everything just works. Remember all mixer have quirks and annoying solutions but Pioneer has least of them. Once you have experience and a lot of money, then you can experiment with other brands but for 1st mixer I would go with Pioneer. Peace.
Monoprice is about to release a 4 channel ($200) and a 2 channel mixer ($100). Not sure when, but they should be out soon.
I know I’m waiting for them.
Behringer DDM 4000… looked like a great buy for $199.99 on ebay… but my stanton M.203 that i bought for $50.00 with broken faders and pink medical tape from a scratch DJ down the street sounds so much better when playing on anything bigger than some 5″ KRKs
maybe im using it “wrong”
Is there a budget 4 channel mixer without on board fx out there that has 4 in 4 out sound card so traktor could be used in external mixer mode?
Agreed, I’m looking for one of these. Although honestly I’d be fine with a 4 channel midi device with a crossfader.
This is what I use at home… 4channel plus 2 mic channels, built in fx, sounds good…
http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-NOX606-6-Channel-Crossfader-Beat-Syncable/dp/B005EHIMYK
One review says it overheats, have you had any trouble with it?
No, no problems like that. I’ve used it for hours on end and it is fine.
Benhriger DDM4000! Both feature packed and high quality only for 300 USD. It has some effects, double effect banks, 2 samplers, filters, 4 channel, full range eq, eq kill buttons, and midi via midi port!
I did look at the DDM, but the street price on it seems to be quite a bit higher than our $300 limit, pretty much everywhere in the world.
It’s also quite long in the tooth compared to the new NOX range, and has received plenty of coverage in the past, so I’m leaning towards the more recent models.
I don’ t know about the price (I am in EU), but the truth is that DDM is a really old model (2007). NOX range high end models is a good replacment of DDM4000. Althought I don’ t think there’ s a signiffican difference between them NOX606 and DDM4000. The only thing it is changed is the layout.
I didn’t mention the Reloop range, which I know has some fans in the DJTT community, and also American Audio, who have a few models in this price range.
Anyone have suggestions from those brands which we should consider?
RMX-30 and 40. The 40 seems a worthy alternative to a Behringer 4-channel mixer. In my opinion Reloop has decent build quality. Not sure if it’s under the 300 dollars though, cheapest I could find here in the Netherlands is around € 315, but everything is more expensive here.
I’ve played through an American Audio MX-1400 DSP a couple times jamming with a friend, but that mixer is no longer in production. It’s a feature-rich mixer I was pretty impressed with–the sound/build quality was great, but the effects unit was broken so I can’t comment on that. I can only assume the quality carried over into their next line of mixers, but that’s a dangerous assumption when you factor in marketshare gains.
Overall, nice mixer that can play loud. The VU meters on each channel were accurate and consistent, and the XLR outs for both master and booth were a nice touch (also really clean). The crossfader leaves a little to be desired, but I’m not a scratch DJ so I really don’t know what I’m talking about.
Behringer NOX404, bought because it’s the only mixer I know of that offers a post-fader fx loop for less than ~£500. Zero regrets.
For a budget mixer, I’m sold that this is officially reigning supreme. But from the 2 pro DJ’s I know who demo pretty much everything, the feedback was the same. The audio, while decent in quality, is inconsistent from channel to channel even though levels and EQ are the same (which doesn’t bode well for beat juggling, etc.). The headphone cue sounds is quiet and sounds like ass. The mic output is also quiet and there’s no talkover button. The effects are decent by all accounts, though.
I have one, been using it every day for 3 months now, the headphone volume is garbage, but I haven’t noticed any channel volume inconsistency, in fact other than the headphone volume issue I haven’t had a single complaint.
Some mixed reviews from you guys on the NOX series, it seems! I’m even keener to give one a test now… Thanks.
I’m using my DJM 250 for about a year now and it is a beast. You get 2 line and 2 phono inputs (via switch) and 3 more line inputs. So you can even use it for connecting your tv to your good speakers. In Germany it sells for 200€. At the moment that’s 277$ says google.
I want to see how the A&H mixers compare to others in this category? They’re my favorite due to their build quality, durability, and sound quality. The Xone 23 is right at the high end of your price range. Give it a go!
A&H top sound quality
————————

agreed. A&H is top notch all around quality, but i use a ZED10FX as my central hub at home and use an S4 for when I’m on the run or a Z2 for hosting events.
I’ve been using the DJM 250 for over a year. After deciding I didn’t quite need my expensive Ran TTM57 for my home (I’m no scratcher), I picked one up along with a used SL1 and a new DJM 250 for ~ $300 CAD.
No problems with the build so far, sounds great. I might end up grabbing a new innofader when I start to feel the need to scratch.
I’ll recommend the 250 to anyone who just needs 2 channels and has no real need for fancy effects. Filters are awesome.
