Earlier this year, two incredible turntablist DJs and producers took on an awesome challenge: playing just vinyl borrowed from Afrika Bambaataa’s record collection. Both coming from a strong sampling background, DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist look right at home on their Renegades of Rhythm tour – and they’ve posted an entire hour and forty-five minute set for everyone to enjoy.
We’re incredibly lucky that these two DJs decided to film their entire Oakland performance in professional multi-cam setup, letting us watch the two work their magic on six turntables and two Pioneer DJM-900Nexus mixers. The YouTube description puts it best:
“You’re there in the audience as the two DJ’s unravel the evolution of Hip-Hop music and culture, using the same artifacts that helped create it. “Not just any records- the MASTER OF RECORDS’ records.””
If you’re not familiar, Afrika Bambaataa was an incredible pioneer of hip hop in New York in the late 1970s. As Shadow notes in the beginning of this video, these are the sounds and records that ultimately created a lot of what we know of as hip hop today.
So glad I caught this show in Atlanta, what an incredible night.
This IS a journey!!!

Works for me in Canada:

The light of the effect of the mixer is blue, it’s probably a DJM 900 SRT.

Got to work tech and security for this show at my school. Had to try really hard to keep myself from rocking out the entire time. Such a masterful show.
Interestingly, Pioneer lent them all new (and unreleased at the time, I believe) PLX-1000’s for them to take for the tour.

THANK YOU Cut Chemist and Shadow! For all of us small town peeps that couldn’t make it to one of your shows. Thank you for saving this and being cool enough to share it with the world! One love!
37 minutes… MINDBLOWN!!! WOWWWWW!!!!
Sadness in Canada! 🙁
lame.
Same in Germany whole time… they should free the music in all the countrys already. The artists don’t earn much money by selling copies anyway anymore…
