Holiday Finger Drumming Contest + Free Soundpack

With the winter holidays upon us and the end of the year closing out, we thought it would be fun to do a finger drumming contest with a holiday-themed soundpack. Click through to download the free soundpack from Apoth, watch exhibition performances from the Soundpack4Soundpack crew, and get the details on entering the competition.

Holiday Finger Drumming Contest Details

Happy holidays, DJTT friends and family! We’re excited to kick off a new contest for the holiday season that everyone with a controller with any of any kind pads or a way to play samples can participate in. Here are the rules:

  • Use the provided soundpack (link below) at least as a starting point for your routine – you can use it as is, but if you modify it we should still be able to recognize elements
  • Record good quality audio and video of you playing the soundpack live! We’re judging based on:
    • Technical performance and playing style
    • Aesthetics and unique elements to your video (Unique setting? Incorporating other instruments, performers, gear? Visuals or nice-looking screencapture of what you’re playing? There are lots of options here!)
    • How enjoyable it is to watch (silly holiday elements or other clever things that keep people watching)
  • Pro Tip: Read Ean’s advice on shooting a great performance video or watch winners from past DJTT contests
  • Upload a video on YouTube or Facebook (or any video site) with #DJTTholidaycontest in the title, and post a link in the comments on this article.
  • Submit your video by Thursday, December 24th at 12 noon, PST.

We’ll be awarding the prizes for the winners (we reserve the right to add more winners if you all really rock our socks off):

  • Grand Prize winner: a front page featured sound pack performance on DJTT in 2016, a Midi Fighter 3D, A Midi Fighter Twister, $100 in DJTT store credit, and all DJTT Soundpacks
  • Runners up: All featured in winner roundup (with a link back to your YouTube channel / Soundcloud / etc) on December 25th

The judges for the contest will be the Soundpack 4 Soundpack crew (who did exhibition videos below) and the DJTT staff.

Download the “Ye Grand Holiday” sound pack (Ableton project + WAVs) here.

Exhibition Performances: Apoth, Vide, Kloosless, INDO, Jeff Tunque

Some of the most passionate finger drummers in the DJTT community have joined forces as Soundpack4Soundpack, a crew that runs regular finger drumming soundpack cyphers. It’s very similar to the Team Supreme weekly beat cyphers, except focused around live performance.

To help kick off this contest, we asked some of the Soundpack4Soundpack crew to put together their own performances on Apoth’s pack. Watch below for inspiration for your own entry:

Woah – I have seen so many amazing setups!! They must have cost you so much money to have so much amazing gear though!! Merry Christmas to everyone 😀

  • CLOPZ

Hey guys! I hope you like the beat, I had a blast making it. This is my first time finger drumming and there is to be plenty more on the way. If you like it, check out my soundcloud at soundcloud.com/clopz !

      Murdered it!!

  • Gonzalo Garreton

    Hey DJTT!
I made a full remix using the soundpack, and I’m super excited to have you guys and the community hear what I’ve made!

All the sounds are contained in one large 100 sample drum rack, with my analog synthesizer being controlled via midi in the drum rack. I just don’t have enough fingers to play everything at once, so with the magic of video editing, I hope you guys enjoy!

    • Jack Mercer

I see you used a sample from the Disciples Merry Christmas video from 2014!! I like this it is really good!

      • Gonzalo Garreton

        😀 Thanks!

Merry Christmas everyone. I’ve put a decent amount of work into this video, so I hope you all enjoy it (and yes, the Santa head does trigger a sample):
    https://youtu.be/XIqicF_w8VE

    • Jack Mercer

This is the winner I am guessing – you are lucky you have so much gear to use!! That must have cost you so much money overall… You are a professional or bedroom producer?!?

      • DJ Naroh

I’m so glad you liked it 🙂 As much as I wish I did, I don’t own all that gear; the Moog and second Push are my mates; I only own a Launchpad and a Push and I bought both of them second hand (so I haven’t really spend that much money on gear). And I’m a bedroom producer (literally).

    • CLOPZ

So awesome! I gotta ask, how did you get the knobs to trigger notes? Let alone triggering notes without turning them? I’m guessing it has something to do with the magic of user mode, huh?

      • DJ Naroh

Thanks, I enjoyed your video too. One day whilst deleting some automation, I realised that the knobs can send two signals: one when turning the knob and another when you simply touch the knob. Placing the Push in user mode simply means that the knobs are no longer effected by the control surface mapping and just send midi signals directly to Ableton. The left knob up the top sends the lowest midi note Ableton uses and the other knobs send midi signals that progressively increase semitonally. You can use these signals as you would any other midi signals and simultaneously use the midi signals the knobs provide when turned (this adjusted the vibrato in the video). So in essense, you basically go into user mode and you can use the midi signals from the knobs; hope that helps 😉

  • Jack Mercer

Hey guys I did another entry – bear in mind I am only 15 years old! I really really want to win the Midi Fighter as I know that I will never be able to afford one myself! The camera is a little bit shakey (sorry) as I do not have much money to spend on video equpiment ahah. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone and good luck to everyone in this contest – all the entries I have seen look really promising! 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM0bX6z7oEY

Here’s my entry, hope you like it!

  • Bluelouie

Whats up guys! Awesome to see how many talented people we have on here!

What I did here was I really detuned all the samples and did a few other edits to the sounds, then I jammed some fat 808s. Had no real routine with this. All purely improvisation. Hope you guys can bob your heads.

    Happy holidaze ::)

    • Alex Ice

      good job !!!

  • frankiefilth

What are you all using to shoot video? I used my iPhone because it’s all
I have but, I’m thinking about investing in a video camera to do stuff
like this more often. Is a wide angle action cam a good way to go, or
should I stick with a more traditional [HD] camcorder? I like the idea of the action cam because I can also do other stuff with it but, is it not good for this kind of shooting?

    • AndyCAPPS

Go pro or HD Webcam, the one I have is the Logitec c920, it’s pretty good. Camcorders are nice, but at the price range i’d probably get a used T3i DSLR lol. Tripods are a must in my opinion so don’t forget to invest in one also.

      • frankiefilth

Wow, I’m pretty impressed after looking into the Logitech a bit. It’s really tempting at that price point. I figure I should go with something more versatile if I’m going to spend anything though, and not be tethered to the computer. I’ve been looking at the Sony AS200v, has a lot of great reviews and does well in comparison with similar cameras.
I know I’ll definitely need a tripod too. If you check out my video, I used my MF3d as a stand for my iPhone lol. Thanks for the input, Andy. Great performance, by the way!

    • tune-o kim

i’ve used Nexus5 to record my video.
      Pretty decent quality IMHO.

      • frankiefilth

It does look like the Nexus has a bit of an edge over my iPhone 5s with resolution. I’m pretty sure I didn’t even really export my video properly or perhaps it could have looked better. I didn’t really know what the heck I was doing lol.

        • tune-o kim

Don’t worry about it. I think everyone can see and hear your performance clearly without any problems. At least i did. 🙂

  • Speedylol

The submissions I’ve seen are amazing. Makes me wonder if mines even stands a chance lol. hope you like it.

  • AndyCAPPS

Here’s my trappy version of this sound pack. In the intro I have the layout of my pads just in case you guys were wondering. Used the Maschine Studio, and played upside down guitar 🙂 Hope you guys enjoy.

    • Pedro Rojas Jr.

The *als document can just be used with Ableton 9.5! Is it just me with that problem?

    • fruity

      No me to …. I don’t have ableton 9.5

    • Kloosless

As far as I know Ableton Live 9.5 files cannot be opened in older versions of ableton. 9.5 added a lot of really useful things, especially for soundpacks.

  • NEVERKiLLTIME

Really digging the flip that Indo Grin did up there, super slick, wasn’t expecting that.

  • Jake Carter

I just entered! I hope you all enjoy my energetic performance (HAHA lol aka I desperately need/want/have to own that fire DJTT gear! Here’s my routine!! – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pn4NAM4My9w

    • Dan White

Awesome, our first entry! solid work.

    • DJ TeeOh "The Official"

      dope breakdown

  • CLOPZ

    Question?
Is using all of the samples in the pack required?

    • CLOPZ

and is the production only limited to these samples?

    • Dan White

You don’t have to use all the samples, but we should be able to tell that you’re using some of them. Be creative if you’d like, but stay focused on the holiday theme and incorporate some elements of the original.

  • carlos samuel

    I want to win >.<! <3

Great! look forward to your entry 🙂
