Recognizing the blurred lines between producers and DJs, Serato has just released a beta version of an upcoming plugin, Serato Sample. The plugin allows users to sample tracks directly from their Serato libraries and into their DAW of choice.
Serato Sample is compatible with Logic, Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Maschine, and adapts the playable hot cue architecture, key-detection, and BPM shifting found in Serato DJ and merges this into a fully featured sample plugin that works natively with the supported programs. Serato Sample can be beta tested for free (link to the application here), and will be available for $99.00 upon release (Beta users will get a 50% discount at $49.50).
The feature set for the Serato Sample plugin includes:
- Key Detection and Shifting of samples using Pitch ‘n Time
- Waveform scrubbing and needle drop on the track you’re sampling
- Colored waveforms that correspond to the audio spectrum of the track
- Sample manipulation controls – allowing quick adjustment of volume, filter, attack/release, key shiting, and BPM/time stretching
- Cue Point style controls that allow you to set and trigger colored pads – mapped out to keys on the keyboard for quick triggering
- A one-click Autoset algorithm that searches your track to find 16 of “the best samples to work with”
The launch of a plugin represents an interesting move for Serato, a company that has almost exclusively been viewed as producing only DJ software. By expanding into the production realm, Serato significantly broadens their market to producers. Their expansion packs for Serato DJ – including Flip, Pitch ‘n Time DJ (which was actually originally a DAW plugin), and various powerful FX packs – also seem to move closer towards live production, as opposed to solely mixing between two tracks. Expect the full version later this year at $99.00.
How about making it simple as in Virtual Dj? (I know the forbidden word).
Make a loop with one button. Push another button and… voilá. You now have a sample.
Does this indicate that serato will be – wiring into ableton so as to produce multi track recordings of DJ sets? What is the protocol for this tool — It only operates outside serato as a plug in or is it work flow friendly to go between the two software’s easily? Didnt something similar to this exist with bridge?
My bad it doesn’t seems nothing related to the bridge. More near to protools pitch&time technology ported into VST…
Seems more near to this than the bridge:

How about adding a live looping plugin. No reason this shouldn’t be possible in serato instead of having to do it in ableton.
Being myself a regular user of live looping solutions since more than a decade (2003) I can’t see why to add looping features to this instead use actual solutions with it. Could you explain a bit more about the workflow? Also joinning their beta and share with them could be useful to make it happen IMO.
Agreed on the beta, actually I joined it as soon as I saw this article. I’m new to live looping myself, but as far as using it as a dj in a performance setting, it seems like it would be convenient to have it built in to serato dj rather than having to route your output from your setup into ableton/etc (I’m too cheap for something like a loopstation pedal) and use another program for the live looping section.
EDIT: I didn’t mean adding live looping to this plugin, I meant adding it to Serato in general, just to clarify.
Ok, first thanks for clearify it.
Live looping into SDJ is another question since it’s an standalone/allinone solution for djing so it could make more sense… with Flip you can achieve something in these line (up to 4 decks and some “clips” for each one) so maybe you should explore these route 😉
Said that, if SDJ improves its sampler to allow Flip or native sequencing (like Dj808) it could do a similar sonic approach that could fit your needs…
In the past SSL has “Live Feed” feature which could let the dj scratch something recorded realtime (not real live looping but almost in the line) but few people seems used it or be glad with results. Anyways you have a “Features request” forum at Serato to ask for this…
Finally one advice… find an old iPhone4/4S (less than 100€) and buy loopyHD app (around 5€), an old cck 30 pins (30€) and on behringer UCA200/UFO200 (the second has phono preamp and less than 40€ new) and make your own. If you need some midi control add a powered hub (20€) and something like Korg Nanokontrol2 (30€ second hand). It could seem a lot of money but you din’t have to buy it althogeter (you can start with cheaper options like irig or splitter cables without UCA or CCK…) and you will have a powerfull looper machine which can do lots of other things (with the proper apps…) 😉
Right now I’m experimenting with it with just ableton live and a $14 midi pedal. Seems to be working decently considering the cost. That being said, something like the ‘looper’ tool in ableton built into serato would be a lot more convenient. Thanks for all the feedback btw.
Fascinating that Serato DJ doens’t have a looping function – the Sampler gets close, but not quite on the same level as Traktor’s…
Fascinating is one word for it… yes… =D
