While Halloween is predominantly celebrated in the US, many of our readers enjoy the Mexican equivalent, Día de los Muertos, and many European countries get into the fun by donning costumes and letting their alter egos free. Like any holiday festivity, the amateurs come out to play – but it also presents an opportunity to lace your sets with a fun theme. DJ TechTools helps by providing a short but juicy list of Halloween DJ jams that are perfect for any ghouly party this weekend.
Killer Track Selection
One of the hardest parts about DJing holiday-specific sets is finding new tracks that keep in the theme of the venue or night, but also have a unique flavor that reflects the holiday at hand. Thankfully Halloween is a lot easier than, say, St. Patrick’s day – but I’ve compiled some of my favorite track finds and ghastly mixes that I’ve discovered this year below.
Figure – Beetlejuice (Dubstep Mix) by Figure (Editor’s tip: Figure has a ton of awesome Halloween remixes worth checking out!)
Duck Sauce “Big Bad Wolf” (Nisus reEdit) by Nisus (Couldn’t resist putting a remix of this track up by DJTT contributor Nisus!) DESIGNER DRUGS – ZOMBIES/BACK UP IN THIS EP by sexcult
Halloween (FilthStep) With Benny Beatnik by BEAT MASS
Krafty Kuts – Radio 1 with Annie Nightingale – Halloween Mini Mix – 28.10.11 by KraftyKuts
In addition, our friends over at Salacious Sound did a great Halloween track roundup !
Effects and Samples
A great way to spook up any set is to add some creepy effects to your set – don’t be afraid to use silence, reverb, echos and white noise when mixing. We’ve covered these in the past, but they’re just as poignant today as they were when we made them.
Advanced FX Combos in Traktor Pro and Using White Noise in a DJ Set
Using samples and sample tracks also help to add depth and tension to your set – check out our finds in this department, but be warned that they can get really cheesy – make sure you use them sparingly:
