Algoriddim’s djay Pro AI for iPad has released a new update with quite the twist: the ability to control the app with – you guessed it – hand gestures.
Gesture Control, also referred to as “Air DJing”, is the first AI-powered hand tracking system built for DJs. It means that users can now mix and manipulate their tracks on an iPad without needing to touch a physical device.
As Karim Morsy, Algoriddim’s CEO, explains:
“The ability to mix music using djay Pro AI’s intelligent, built-in hand tracking technology represents a fundamental change in how DJs are able to orchestrate mixes and adds a new visual dimension to live DJ sets. Gesture Control is a new paradigm with implications beyond DJing and music creation. It is a major step forward with how people interact with mobile technology.”
How it works
The new feature utilizes Apple’s new A14 Bionic chip, which was teased back in their September 2020 keynote. Users can use Gesture Control to scratch, apply filters and effects, create loops, or – get this – just lean back and clap to transition to the next track.

How to try it
First off, make sure you have the djay for iOS app – up for grabs at no cost to you on the App Store. On the iPad front, you’ll need to have iOS 14 installed, and use an iPad Pro 11-inch, 12.9-inch (3rd gen+), or iPad Air (4th gen+).
You’ll need djay Pro AI to access Gesture Control, which is available as an in-app monthly subscription for $6.99 / €6.99 / £6.99. If you’re already subscribed, Gesture Control is now available as a free update.
The new update comes with a few other perks as well, including:
- Enhanced MIDI control
- Easy access to your music files saved to Google Drive or Dropbox
- A new visualizer feature, which you can customize with a video from your own camera roll, live photos, or music videos from TIDAL.
We’re curious to hear your experience with Gesture Control. Give it a shot, and let us know what you think in the comments below. You can get more details on the feature here.
