CDJ-1000mk3 Gets Amazing NXS-Style Display Mod

DJTT has written about a number of wild gear mods over the years, but this one might be the most useful revitalization of old DJ gear yet. In this mod, an old CDJ-1000mk3 (released in March 2006) gets a powerful new heads-up display that offers the same level of detail that CDJ-2000NXSs have on them. Watch the mod in action and keep reading to learn more.

CDJ-1000MK3 Modded; 10+ Years Later

The CDJ-1000MK3 came out all the way back in March of 2006, making it a pretty old piece of gear. As you might expect, it’s a proper CD player – and the normal display on the screen is pretty low on detail and information. Here’s what it normally looks like:

With the prototype mod featured in the video below, DJs first analyze CDs in Rekordbox, upload them to a SD card, and pop that into a microcontroller kit with a built-in display. The kit is soldered into the CDJ’s circuit board.

Load in a CD, and playback works on the CDJ as normal – but with the added bonus of seeing far more detail for every track on the microcontroller screen:

The official description of the mod is that it “adds a color TFT display based on the STM32F746 Discovery to the Pioneer CDJ-1000mk3 with waveforms and precise BPM counter.”

Who Made This Mod?

Who would have the badass skills able to do this mod? The level of detail might seem familiar – because it’s the same guy from the standalone Technics DVS mod we’ve covered a few times on DJTT. His name is Andrei Anantsko, and he’s incredibly clever when it comes to DJ gear mods.

When asked how the mod works, he explained:

The CD is analyzed in Rekordbox. The analysis data is imported to the SD card. The SD card is installed on the Discovery board. Rekordbox data is synchronized with the player’s operation and displayed. The next step is to exclude the MPU and DSP installed in the Pioneer CDJ-1000, leave only the control panel MPU, and write to the SD card audio data + rekordbox data.

This is the graphics I created myself (fonts, colors, positions of elements) to within a pixel. This was created based on the screenshots display in the service manuals CDJ-2000 and photos of the display in high resolution.

Right now there are no plans to turn this into a commercial product – but we’ve reached out to Andrei to see if he’d be interested in sharing more details on how other DJs can do this exact modification. UPDATE: Here’s his response:

This is not yet a completed project. I plan to remove the CD-ROM and play files from a USB flash drive or an SD card. Then the mod will be of great value and for it it will be possible to use the CDJ-1000 even with a faulty motherboard, since all functions will be performed by the Discovery board.

After that, I’ll share the firmware and the connection description, but I need time.

Worth noting: CDJ-1000mk3s are selling for about $200-300 dollars on eBay right now, and the STM32F746 Discovery kits / development boards are available on Mouser for ~$57.

Anyone know if this could work on the 1000-Mk2, was about to let mine go for $200 and now I’m thinking this could make a good project.

This is a really ingenious mod! That being said, You can also get a ton of detail by just using Traktor….

Neat hack. Though, other than not being able to disable the BPM counter, the poor pitch resolution on Wide with MP3 CDs, the jog bend dead zone, and the lack of USB drive support, I consider the CDJ-1000mk3 to be pretty much perfect. Assuming I’m using a Red Book CD in the first place, I prefer it to the CDJ-2000s. Better pitch resolution on Wide with Red Book CDs (0.1 instead of 0.5) and no distracting moving wave form. It’s also built better than the newer models.

Goodness, I thought he somehow managed to extract the firmware from the 2000’s, but building the gui pixel by pixel? That’s incredible. Hire this person.
