It’s Friday folks, so that means most of us are going out to club this weekend to either DJ or dance – and hopefully both. For many dj’s dancing at a party can be anywhere from awkward to terrifying, which is why many of us chose to stay behind the decks. Thanks to some new science however, there is hope for men looking to become better dancers.
Dancing: A DJs Secret Weapon?
Alluding to a post from Ean back in 2011, dancing to the music is a fundamental skill that many djs should have. After all, we are there to make people move! Here is a small excerpt from Ean’s article:
Dancing along with the crowd puts you directly in touch with the fundamental feel of the rhythm and can prevent critical dance floor errors that will make everyone stop and walk away entirely. Let’s face it, when a crowd is in the groove together, you can get away with almost anything, but there is nothing harder than getting an empty floor going. Sometimes, the spark required to start that fire is you and your natural passion for the music.
When grooving to the beat you will notice changes to swing of long break downs that kill the floor a lot more than the dj who is just lost in his head or the laptop. Understandably most of us feel awkward dancing on the floor or in the booth but apparently science has figured out how to make men significantly better dancers (at least as judged by our female counterparts)
Grooving to the beat and going full on dance party ARE very different things, but it’s Friday – so let’s have some fun and find out how to dance a little bit better.
The Science of the Dance
Since “good” dancing is terribly subjective, the scientists sought to measure what kind of movements in men caught the attention of women and which movements were a major turn off. Curious? Here is the full report:
According to the research, dancing lies within amplitude, duration, speed, and variability. Here are the three things, especially guys, should be doing on the dance floor:
- Use larger, more variable twisting and bending movements of the upper neck and torso
- Bend and twist your right knee faster. Move your right knee to be a more agile dancer.
- The faster you move your legs the more compliments you will receive on fresh moves.
Dancing and moving in the booth can reduce stress, increase confidence and energy that radiate from the booth and into the crowd. Even the DJ Jesus Pose is scientifically proven to be a confidence and energy booster for DJs. We don’t really recommend that one though, so take the universities dancing ideas with a large grain of salt!
