In our latest “Artist Gear Setup” series, we get a look at the travel essentials for Swedish DJ and progressive house producer, Jeremy Olander. You won’t find any alcohol or tequila in his bag. Rather Jeremy’s travel essentials demonstrate how traveling DJs and producers can take better care of themselves while on the road. This is especially important to keep energy levels up and increase creativity.
Keep reading to learn more about what’s in Jeremy Olander’s bag.
This is our fourth entry in the “Artist Gear Setup” series: Check out these past artists setups:
Vitamin Supplements
When you’re on the road it can be tough to eat right and make sure you get all the right nutrients. I started taking daily supplements of Multi-Vitamin, Fish Oil capsules and Vitamin D and it helps a lot. Especially the Vitamin D since I don’t get to see the sun a lot during the winter in Sweden.
MacBook Charger
Not much to say really. Essential if you need to prepare tracks for the shows or produce on the road, which I tend to do a lot. Traveling does a lot for my inspiration.
Sennheiser HD-25 Headphones
The HD25s have been my faithful companion on the road, in the studio and at shows for as long as I can remember. Had brief stint with the Pioneer HDJs but switched to the Sennheisers (see how they stack up to other On-Ear headphones).
Swedish and American Passports
I have dual citizenships in Sweden and America and depending on where I go I use a different passport. Very convenient and has saved me a lot of trouble and money since I don’t have to worry about any Visa issues in America.
Neck Pillow
I know, it looks goofy, but if you travel a lot from Europe to the US it’s an essential travel companion. When you tour you need to grab sleep whenever you can.
Generic Airline Eye Mask
When I put the pillow around my neck followed by this eye mask I shut down instantly.
Bose QuietComfort 20i Noise Cancelling Headphones
This is my latest acquisition to my travel comfort arsenal. Have a friend that works at Bose so I got these for a steal and they work just as advertised. I can sit next to the engine on a flight and not hear a thing.
SanDisk SD Cards
Whenever I play I aways bring one primary SD card, a backup, and a backup of the backup (learn how to build a digital DJ emergency kit). The primary one is a 32 GB SanDisk Ultra 20MB/s card and the two backups are 15MB/s versions.
Custom Bellman & Symfon Ear Plugs
First thing I bought when I made a little money was moulded ear plugs. They’re obviously essential if you want to avoid hearing loss, yet I still tend to see DJs that don’t use them (learn more about how you can protect your ears).
Yves Saint Laurent Sunglasses
Always carry these in my bag when I travel. I’ve used the same pair for over 10 years now and they still hold up. Some say they look dated but I like to argue they’re almost vintage at this point.
Asus External HD
I try to have as little stuff on my laptop SSD as possible for the sake of performance, so I use this one when I travel. It’s got all my sample libraries that I use.
Apple iPad 2
Whenever I leave home I always fill my iPad up with loads of movies and TV shows that I’ve left for later. There’s always at least one season of Simpsons on there.
MacBook Pro 15” Retina 16GB RAM
My main laptop that I always travel with and use for production. In hopefully not too long I’ll be looking complementing it with stationary Mac Pro to have at the studio and solely use this one for when I travel. Despite 16GB of RAM I still feel like I need more.
Audio Interface and Software (not pictured)
I use The Apollo Twin interface so I can use UAD plugins on the road. It’s really great sounding. I’m also a big fan of the Waves plugins. I work exclusively in Logic, which I have been using for the last 10 years. Prior to that I dabbled a little in Ableton but it wasn’t for me.
iPhone 6+ 64GB
Got this the day it came out and despite it taking a while to get used to the screen size I wouldn’t have it any other way now. It’s a breeze sifting through emails and typing on this device.
Hand Sanitizer
I wouldn’t put myself in the germaphobe-category, but I do have somewhat of an obsession with keeping my hands clean and tidy. I don’t feel like I have time to get sick and with germs spreading so easily from hand-to-hand I do what I can to kill them off.
Tres Bien Track Pants
I like to travel in comfort and a lot of time you have to sacrifice style if you want comfort. With these I feel I can have both. From afar they look like black, clean dressy pants but in reality they’re just really great looking track pants. Never going back to jeans.
Stüssy x Nike SB Trainerendors
My go-to sneakers when I’m on the road and go well with the track pants in terms of looks as well as comfort.
Louis Vuitton Wallet
I’ve probably had this one for as long as the YSL glasses and it still holds up. I think the leather looks better for every year of wear. It carries some of my most precious belongings, namely my frequent flyer cards.
Books
I’ve been fascinated with space and science since I was a little kid and try to consume a little knowledge in analogue form and more often than not it’s in the shape of a book on a science topic. Right now I’m reading Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow’s “The Grand Design” as well as a Swedish book that’s essentially “Economics for Dummies”.
