Some of you are probably wondering, who exactly are my fellow DJs that visit this blog? To be honest, with all the crazy growth we have seen lately, I started to wonder the same thing. Rather than make assumptions, we created a comprehensive survey two weeks ago and nearly 2,000 people responded. The goal was to find out exactly what gear you are using and what topics everyone is most interested in reading. The results are fascinating and have already changed the way we do things around here. Since DJTT is all about sharing, we have posted some of the more relevant results below for your reading enjoyment.
GENERAL MUSIC TASTES
As expected EDM is the most popular music on the blog but the surprisingly high amount of people that are into Jazz and classical reflects a very diverse readership.
EDM GENRES
One thing we have always been proud of is a diverse group of DJs that never hate on each other based on musical style or taste. This kind of mix would never work in a traditional DJ record store but thanks to the positive attitude of our readers, everyone basically gets along very well.
ALL BEDROOM DJS?
3 years ago, when we started this blog, it was assumed anyone using controllers was a bedroom DJ and pro’s used DVS. When asked “Where do you dj?”, these stats clearly reflect that reality shifting strongly.
GOT SKILLS?
This is the real challenge for our site. You’re basically split in terms of beginners and advanced DJs. We try to cater to both and offer an even balance of hard articles with those critical basics all new DJs need to understand. Sometimes old timers get frustrated when we write articles on the basics but my feeling is: where else will the new DJs learn?
HOW ARE WE DOING?
This was good to see, even with the increasingly impossible task of trying to balance out the content we have been doing well for most of you. There is clearly a need for more in-depth articles though, which we are crafting right now in the labs!
CONTROLLERISM IS STRONG
When asked, what style of DJing do you enjoy? I was really surprised to see such a large number of controllerism advocates. All of the other styles are represented but we assumed a much smaller number of you were actually interested in controllerism.
IS TRAKTOR REALLY LEADING THE PACK?
“What software do you have installed on your computer?”
As suspected, a huge portion of our audience owns some version of Traktor, but the real surprise was that nearly half of you also own Ableton. What does that mean? A lot more Ableton articles for starters! For those who are wondering, Torq made up 2%, slightly less than Deck-a-dance. These stats fully support our choices in the controversial DJ software head to head. We know you Serato heads are out there, and plan on bringing more articles about that software in the coming months as well.
DO YOU MAKE MONEY FROM DJING?
For over 60% of you DJing represents a large part of your income. That makes us feel better about all the business articles we write. Every time there is a new one, I was thinking to myself – I wish I knew this stuff 10 years ago!
MOVING FORWARD
This survey provided a huge amount of insight on what we are doing well and where the blog needs to improve. A huge thanks to everyone who contributed and for the valuable time you gave us. If you didn’t have the chance to take the survey, please let us know in the comments what you think we are doing well and what could be improved.
