Today we’re featuring three inspiring routines that show different sides of drumming-centric controllerism. Behind the routine in each of these videos are undiscovered YouTube stars that most controllerism aficionados haven’t heard of. We’re still waiting for the DMC of controllerism so that each of these performers could have a chance at winning a world championship!
GUVI: MPC LIVE BEATMAKING
We’ll start out with Guvi, an artist based out of both Jesusalem and Berlin who recorded this session on an Akai MPC 2500 back in 2011. It’s part one of five – you can watch the full set on his YouTube channel. While Guvi hasn’t uploaded many more live video routines, his Soundcloud page has stayed active with new beats and tracks.
SMOOTH PATTERN’S MASCHINE MIKRO ROUTINES
This guy actually has dealt with a fair amount of YouTube haters (no surprise there) who have claimed that his routines are faked and artificially sped up after recording them. In this video, Smooth Pattern starts a timer on his phone to prove just how real the whole performance is. His timing and flow are really solid in this live remix of ASAP Rocky’s “Peso” on a Maschine Mikro:
SUBSTANCE B: 200 BPM AND BEYOND
Shared by the performer himself on our Facebook page, this routine has Substance B performing super-fast beats using just one of his hands. It’s nice to see someone rocking out on the old Midi Fighter Classic as well.
