Itch Officially Takes on Traktor

Up until this point, Serato Itch has been the little brother of Serato Scratch and had a hard time getting any attention, but that may all change very fast with a powerfull new version of Itch and matching Xone DX controller announced today by Serato.

2-PLAYER GAME

With the addition of four decks, FX and beatgrids, Itch is officially going after the Traktor market.  If Serato can iron out the bugs, make the beat grids work and fully integrate a great controller, then Itch may offer the first good competition Traktor has seen. With this announcement, Allen & Heath may take Itch a step beyond Traktor, offering the first professional four-deck controller on the market=- something our readers have been asking for a long time.

Critital Info

Suggested Retail Price: £ 999.00/ $1600

Release Date: Now Shipping? One online retailer is taking orders and is reporting your order will ship within 4 day.

Pros

  • The first practical controller designed to deal with 4 decks
  • good layout
  • allen and heath makes high quality equipment
  • all 4 mixer channels are fully functional
  • There will be full integration with Itch
  • The FX section is stand alone and does not switch with the decks
  • full sized proper mixer section

Cons

  • Many of the components look the same as the xone series which dont have that great of a feel
  • the Xone jog wheels in particular are fairly outdated and not touch sensitive
  • the small cue jump buttons are some of my least favorite buttons on a controller
  • how do you pitch bend? there is a visual reference but is it controlled by a encoder? If so, are djs ready to give up their pitch faders?
  • only 2 groups of FX

Our Take

Allen and Heath is a mixer company and it clearly shows here. The emphasis is on the mixer section, which is lovely and well balanced. Unfortunately I think they stopped short of what was possible with the decks. The layout, workflows, and concepts are all solid and everything you need to mix is essentially accounted for but we wish they had either developed some new performance components (buttons/jog wheels) or defined a few innovative ways of doing things.

This is a great controller for the market, not only because it may work for a lot of people but this will really ratchet up the competition between Serato and NI resulting in better products for you!

here is all the info we have from the official Serato press release:

September 30, 2009

The Xone:DX is a new performance audio controller for electronic DJs and is the result of close design collaboration. The DX has been co-engineered with new Serato ITCH DJ software, that now offers 4-decks and DJ FX.

The “Allen & Heath Xone:DX with Serato ITCH”(DX:ITCH for short), is making a debut appearance at the BPM Show in the UK over the next few days.

Allen & Heath is the fourth major manufacturing partner to co-engineer on the Serato ITCH platform. Using their 40 years of experience creating world class mixers and specialty controllers, Allen & Heath now provide for the future of electronic music performance.

The DX:ITCH system arms a breed of electronic performer that wants precise control and manipulation of more audio with their DJ performance, in the club and everywhere they travel.

Built with over 100 preset performance commands and some serious audio processing, the 4 channel mix control is routed to a massive 20 channel 24/96k USB sound card. This means loads of extra inputs and outputs for integration with other audio tools or simple blending of your existing external audio gear like a turntable, drum box or sound module.

The 4 virtual decks exist in a clean uncluttered environment on the ITCH software interface. ?Using the DX library navigation control, you can quickly make selections from your crates. You can then accurately mix 4 audio tracks on the virtual decks along with other external sources. Each of the virtual decks can be assigned multiple Serato DJ FX that are hosted in ITCH software.

The DX:ITCH encourages performers to remix, rework and make new music on the fly. With 4-decks in action and BPM based effects, Serato have adopted new synchronization options for this next generation of ITCH. An additional beat grid has been added to make quick work of more complex mix arrangements.

The collaboration has resulted in a portable piece of digital DJ technology, absolutely brimming with features and high end specification. Because the DX is official ITCH hardware, Serato made sure it simply works out of the box.

There has simply never been a more ergonomic controller with this many extreme options at your finger tips. It fits in a bag, but has everything you need to melt a superclub.

This week has clearly been taken over by product announcements, so I promise next week we will be getting back to the classic TechTools material:  using equipment creatively, not just talking about it.

I think Serato makes Itch to work only with it’s dedicated controllers is because they want it always to work and no user mapping required. Agree Apple OSX would be great if it was an “open software”, but Apple always has this “be different attitude” and if OSX went “open”, there computer sales may fall, as for me OSX is what makes people buy most Macs. I mean the PC hardware in generalis better in most cases than Macs and cheaper, but one is lacking OSX.

This is completely wrong mate. I can confirm that the DX will work with Traktor 100% in fact in will integrate with Traktor just as well as it does with Itch.

We are trying to get one in-house. I cant wait to get my hands on it.

This looks cool and everything, but way too much money. I ended up paying $2000 on sale for my 4D. If this was $1000 I would really consider selling my TS/4D and go itch/dx, but not for that price.

  • Markku Uttula

When I first saw this, I didn’t take too much notice on the Itch-stamp, but instead my mind was spinning around “well that looks like a bloody efficient controller for Traktor”… and I still feel that way. I’d be interested in seeing the back of the unit, though – wondering if you can actually use it as a 4-ch mixer (on top of using it as a controller).

About the price; the ones we’ve been seeing are SRP… I believe the actual street price will be lower than that.

  • CounterpoinT

    I can find a much better use for £ 999.00/ $1600

I guess its up to the customers/community. This is a pretty expensive investment, ppl will not go lightly over it and really consider the alternatives.
So what ppl will buy will push the companies to one direction or the other.

BTW: who uses pitch faders anymore in this age of beatgrids and pitch shift FX?

HELLO, don’t ppl know by now: the beatmatching problem has been solved, for 100%, so manually beatmatching is a SELFISH act from which nobody benefits!! Only the ego of the dj.
These strong words are somewhat quoted from the words of Chris Liebing in his latest video on traktor pro 1.2 on the NI website, and wise words they are imho.
]But Apple controls 90% of the over-$1000 PC market.
you got that quote (which is actually 91%) from the month of june only.

“According to NPD, in June, nine out of 10 dollars spent on computers costing $1,000 or more went to Apple.”

you can read a full analysis of what that meant in the market as well as get a clearer understanding by reading this article here

    http://www.betanews.com/joewilcox/article/Apple-has-91-of-market-for-1000-PCs-says-NPD/1248313624

its also no secret that apple does next to nothing in the enterprise market which is clearly dominated by windows, linux coming after (servers. remember there are more workstations than servers in the corporate and business environment).

apple’s overall market share really hasnt changed in the personal computer market as they have completely missed out on the netbook market.

so my point is still very much valid.

  • Dazzle

    Blah,

I wish that Allen & Heath would just stick to what they know, It’s getting really annoying with all these companies trying to get in bed with each other. Why didn’t A&H just make a great 4 channel midi controller/soundcard that you could use for anything, traktor, serato, ableton etc?

Why are companies making these things so big too? Even the new traktor controller is hideous in my opinion. I suppose if you want one of these A&H it would work in a coffin or you don’t plan on using it out much this would work. If you’re like me you need to have equipment that doesn’t require a lot of space.

Excellent point- Its ironic though that I love the mac for that stable reliable experience. The same thing that Serato and Itch proponents will talk about when explaining their reason for using a closed system.

On the other hand its obvious how many great things have come out of the more open Traktor environment. If itch continues down this closed path then the future of those controllers is clear- more of the same “you get what we provide” attitude that permeated the last 15 years of djing.

This period of open midi controller exploration was amazing but I fear its days might be limited if everyone takes sides and sets up fort.

Regarding the lack of pitch faders; considering each side of the controller is responsible for two decks, a single fader per side wouldn’t work all that well. Besides, I think most people who are mixing 4 decks are doing so with beat-gridding, it’s pretty hard otherwise. Also, I think having only two sets of controls is a problem, I’d much rather have all 4 decks accessible at once is much better. That’s why I think separate units like NI’s makes more sense.

  • rdej47

I think thats way too expensive. Allen & Heath stuff is always really overpriced. Personally I don’t think Itch can compete with Traktor. What really won me over with Traktor especially Traktor Pro was the GUI it’s very neat and professional. The placement in Itch seems sloppy.

Exactly! I couldn’t say it any better myself.

  • K-Sea

Nothing compelling enough on this to make me want to switch from my M-Audio Xponent anytime soon.

Heck, even torq running with Behringer DDM4000 will run you less money, and you can throw in a mpd32 (cough what I use when not on my Xponent).

Of course turntables not included 😉

I’ve tried a lot of systems and when it comes to some genres I still prefer turntables but their are times you want something more portable. The Xponent does well for this, and that with torq is amazing. You can’t get there with itch yet so why buy the controler?

    Safe Peoplez!

If Allen & Heath are going to take the path of reproducing the Xone:4D as a midi control surface, they should follow the metaphor all the way. I really like the overall vibe of this product, but wish they had put it in the same metal housing as the 4D, the same high quality knobs, sliders, & buttons, and went with a Firewire computer interface, instead of USB. I understand why they would market this for Serato & Traktor, but Serato Itch seems like a mismatch, given the price tag of the unit. One also has to wonder how nicely or not nice it will play with Ableton Live. In any case, its great to see more good options.

  • bigbeatzz

I wonder if the beatgrid function will work like ableton…If it does, this will beat the pants off of traktor. Abelton warping is far superior to traktor beat gridding.

  • Fickala Musoterual

Be cool if they offer Itch to work on NS7/ VCI users or I’ll be pissed…like we can with a VCI-100 style. Shift plus a buttons makes decks and sliders into lines & decks 3/4..if not, seems the update is biased and only for newer controllers like A&H, then this is not cool.
Itch 1.0 is now getting a little boring, so we have to buy a new controller to use the 4 decks..? Who will buy a new VCI fx (VFX-1) unit for a VCI-300 then? Be a waste. Dunno, something not cool here.

I have a picture of the VCI 300 on my wall that I was saving to buy… Now this comes along… Damn it all now I have a big decision to make. A&H is a serious mixer and has some of the best processors and are built like a tank. The VCI-300 is a step up from the 100 but still seems a little “toyish”. Thanks.

  • f0tif0

wow is there gonna be a chance for us vci 300 owners to use 4 decks with fx 1 controller I wonder because it has decks a and b :///
    a&H Expensive though..

  • Jay cee

I dont know why but it looks cheap, but its cheaper than a 4D so lets see what it is like in the skin!

  • the shmobletons

    few things:

first off, i really like where this is going. i think its a great idea and a step in the right direction for us 4 deck mixers. yes, it is super expensive, but i have the feeling that this is only opening up the 4 deck controller market, and its only a matter of time before other companies (vestax?) build a quality 4 deck controller layed out perfectly for traktor. (and at a fraction of the price)

secondly, being an ableton user, i wonder if this has anything to do with the ableton/serato partnership that i heard about.

thirdly, i was wondering if this thing had any kind of dvs routing capabilities. it says that it is only capable in itch, which i have read has no timecode capabilities, but i was thinkin, since they outfitted this thing with a huge soundcard, why would they not make it compatible with SSL, that way someone could hook up 2 TTs and have a 4 deck killer.

lastly, people keep talking about the pitch being rotary controller, but i think they might be wrong. do i see a TOUCHSTRIP pitch fader with led feedback on this thing??? look closely to the right of the jogs, a little blue light on one deck and a little red light on the other. i noticed this in a different picture and thats what i immediately thought. what do you guys think? is it a touchstrip or just an led strip for some feedback?

  • NYC DJ Julio

I will stick with Traktor pro and my Xponent Controller. I know that there a lot of VCI users here and I in no way want to start a witch controller is better war. I also Understand the whole it looks and feels like a toy thing. But for ME it has the best layout of any of the other controllers out there for use whith traktor pro and I have found it to be light, rugged and durabule. But the Xzone/DX does have one advantage over the rest in that you can control all four faders at once but still only control two decks at a time. so it really won’t change anything for me. I like it but I won’t buy it.

  • DJ Tony OKay

Im totally happy with my Reloop Digital Jockey 2 it handles 4 decks and made esp for Traktor. and paid only $400

  • Anonymous

    4 decks got my vote.

Hope the Vestax people are tuned in, I want 4 faders!!!!

but this is way overpriced. of course, A&H is always first grade & built like a tank.

again: 4 decks got my vote.

  • Dj Nvidia

    WOW!!!

I have always been reluctant to give up Traktor and my swazzy VCI Arcade mod, but this might be a reason to do so.

Though I will say that this probably won’t convert a lot of Serato Scratch users, simply because the device doesn’t seem to be “scratch” friendly. So dj playing a lot hip hop (etc), proably won’t see this as great advancement that it is… they will probably still stick with the NS7.

But my big question is… HOW MUCH?

    I can get a VCI-100 and Tracktor for aboout $600 (VCI = 300, Traktor = 300)

  • BentoSan

Jebus that thing looks pretty cool, id make some changes though personally.

Someone mentioned something about external summing with this unit, not really a big fan of external summing though :\ Cant properly smartmix externally and it closes alot of other avenues when it comes to creative use of fx routings – not that any software aimed specificly at DJ’s takes advantage of this anyway >=(

If i was going to complain about anything it would be:
    The lack of transport buttons.
The lack of pitch fader (though thats hardly the end of the world),
The lack of decent jog wheels – those xone jogs leave much to be desired.
External summing (havent confirmed this)- this should be an option and not forced on users.
The lack of decent highly playable buttons (arcade button style) – though i would have to have a play with the unit to confirm this.

Other than that though it certainly is a decent step forward in the controller market.

Lets just hope Serato doesnt skrew up the fx section like i have a strong feeling they will – i am honestly getting fairly sick of being treated like a 4 year old with the fx capabilities of these dj programs (yes this even includes Traktor who probably has the best fx implementation we have seen to date). Software companies need to take a leaf out of Abletons book, then make further improvements my taking a leaf out of Moldovers book. The lack of true high level customization just makes DJ’s sound like the same as the other DJs playing on the same software – plug and play out of the box isn’t an attractive option for me what so ever, doing what everyone else is doing with their controllers kinda bores me to tears.

Cant wait to see this thing get reviewed !

The only thing I don’t like is that some of the buttons seem really tiny. Would there be ways to pound the hot cue buttons with no troubles? But this diffenitly gives the small controller DJ more respect. There is no need for a massive DJ set up. This day and age portable and efficient is what people are looking for and the DX delivers.

This is going to be a serious test for my own love of Traktor, I have to have one. Hopefully this will give vestax a kick in the 4 deck controller direction. Allen &Heath say it works with any software so I’ll definitely be mapping it to Traktor but despite the technology being there it obviously won’t support Traktor Time code vinyls which is such a shame. Dame you Serato and your exclusive contract with Allen & heath and denon. In my opinion two great forward thinking companies.

If itch and the dx starts to support time code, NI are really going to need to up there game. I know Itch’s Fx will be a long way of beating Traktors mighty fx, but this unit (give or take) is exactly what many Traktor user’s have been crying out for, access to all 4 decks without the need of to press a bleedin shift button and the rest of the feature’s Allen & heath list for the dx is immense, shame about the typical lame Allen & heath hot cue buttons tho. The fact you’ll actually be cutting audio with the cross fader rather than sending signals to a midi cross fader is pretty awesome , Hmmm wonder if there’s space for arcade buttons under the hood?
itch will now have 4 DECKS!!! i wonder if you will need 2 vci 300’s to control all of them… if not ill have to jump on this. too bad it has a toy look like the Xponent. as long as it performs then no worries
Itch worries me.

They had a good thing going and had the “straight, no chaser” crowd in their back pocket.

    Now 4 decks & FX.

    We’ll see………..

just looks like a fat overloaded VCI – 100 so thick too… not very portable

Hopes of a MIDI controller version of the Xone 3D/4D have been crushed…

    Amen to that.

Pitch knobs instead of faders? Really?

Wonder what the price will be?

I have to see this thing in action, I would have liked a controller that you could use on anything… but my very first reaction was: this beats the hell out of a CDJ-2000.
