Pioneer is the club standard with both their CDJs and DJM mixers. A ‘proper’ club is likely to have a DJM800, or at least a 600 if they’re not the updating type, sandwiched between a pair of CDJ900/1000/2000s. The 800 had so much going for it that many tried and failed to even get a foothold in the DJ booth. The DJM 900 Nexus looks, certainly at first glance, pretty similar to the 800, so what exactly have Pioneer added to make sure they stay ahead of the competition?
Reviewed: Pioneer DJM900 Nexus
Price: $1999/£1599 (street)
Available: Now
Weight: 15.7lb/7.2kg
Dimensions: 13.0″ x 16.1″ x 4.2″
THE GOOD:
- Traktor Certified
- Improved sounding, post fader effects
- MIDI connectivity
THE BAD:
- Single USB slot could lead to DJ switchover complications
- Faders are less than awe inspiring
- Serious price tag
THE BOTTOM LINE:
Price wise, the DJM900 Nexus is pretty much in a league of its own. However it’s extremely powerful, Traktor Certified, has great sounding effects and sounds cleaner than its predecessor. The faders aren’t perfect but you won’t be disappointed to find a DJM900 in the next booth you arrive in.
THE BASICS
The Nexus is a four channel, Traktor Certified mixer with three band EQ on each channel, two mic inputs – one combi and one ¼” – that share a channel (separate gains, same high/low EQ) and feature an auto ducking talk over function, and two types of effects – a main effects bus that can be set to any individual channel, any crossfader side, or the master, and a separate effect that is dialed in to any channel individually. There are line, phono and digital ins per channel, a digital out, XLR and RCA master out, ¼” booth out, separate RCA record out, and stereo ¼” send and return. There’s fader start and not just DIN MIDI but USB too, and an ethernet connection for linking to Pioneer CDJs.
UPDATED EFFECTS
The effects section itself has had a real refurb. Many of the options were present in the 800 but have had a sound quality or feature upgrade, and there are some completely new ones too.
*Echo, Delay, Transform, Filter, Flanger and Phaser all return, and benefit from the X Pad’s ability to change their settings and on/off status in one motion.
*Reverb seems to have learned some lessons from Traktor’s implementation, and now features a space and a frequency setting, which lets you push the pitch of the reverb tail up or down as you grow or shrink it.
*As well as Loop Roll and Rev Roll, Slip Roll takes a new snapshot of the incoming audio when you change the timing, and whilst it’s not tough to achieve this effect with standard roll, simply switching the effect on and off when you change the timing, slip roll lends itself perfectly to sliding your finger across the X Pad.
*Chorus has made way for Melodic, and puts the power of the harmonising in your hands. When the effect is turned on it captures audio much like the beat roll, and then the time dial changes the pitch that the captured audio plays all whilst still keeping time. Pitch is independent of repeat time, too, so you can mess with the two to create a whole new melody line with a little practice. Here a vocal sample is grabbed and its timing and pitch are played with to create a new melody. Gate is used at the end to improvise a breakdown and create an on the fly remix: [audio:http://djtechtools.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/melodic.mp3|titles=Melodic]
*Rev Delay has disappeared to make room for Spiral, which is a very forthright effect that sounds a little like a tape delay that feeds back infinitely. Changing the time allows you to change the tape speed, the sound folding over itself as it goes on and the pitch moving up and down with the effect – it’s one of the Nexus’s best new effects. Here’s a subtle example, increasing the level of the effect smoothly and then reducing the time value to shorten the delay and increase its pitch, with some audio fades to demonstrate its post fader nature: [audio:http://djtechtools.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/spiral.mp3|titles=Spiral]
*Pan has been removed – a rarely used effect for many, even useless in clubs where the output is summed to mono. Everything is more or less in the same place on the dial, except *Reverb which has moved to perhaps the more logical position of beside the delay effects. The post fader implementation of the effects has been much improved too, and ‘wet’ effects such as reverbs and delays all tail out post fader and feed the colour effects. The Send and Return loop, of course, makes an appearance, as does the mysterious new MIDI LFO – more on that later.
- Noise, which overlays a noise signal whose pitch is adjustable by the dial position[audio:http://djtechtools.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/noise.mp3|titles=Noise]
- Space, which is a splashy reverb that accentuates low frequencies in one direction, high in another[audio:http://djtechtools.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Space-High.mp3|titles=Space High][audio:http://djtechtools.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Space-Low.mp3|titles=Space Low]
- Dub Echo, an echo that feeds back more and more as the dial is turned, and like Space affects different frequencies in each direction [audio:http://djtechtools.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Dub-Low.mp3|titles=Dub Echo Low][audio:http://djtechtools.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Dub-High.mp3|titles=Dub Echo High]
- Gate/comp, which is a flattening compressor with an auto gain when turned one way, and a gating compressor when turned the other.[audio:http://djtechtools.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Gate.mp3|titles=Gate]
The loss of Harmonic might be an issue for some, but considering that key adjustment is a feature in most DVS systems, digital DJ software, and many CD decks, it’s easy to see why Pioneer did away with it.
SOUND AND CONNECTIVITY
The Nexus has also been furnished with what Pioneer calls MIDI LFO. It’s as it sounds, and automates a MIDI signal with an adjustable LFO – so for instance, Traktor’s filter can be automatically modulated by the Nexus. There are seven different shapes to the LFO, and it’s just as easy to integrate it as the rest of the effects.
The built in audio interface isn’t locked to Traktor, of course, and the MIDI capability is given a boost by including an actual 5 pin DIN output on the back of the mixer for connecting MIDI capable effects units like Pioneer’s EFX1000.
A full complement of a DJM900, a pair of CDJ2000s and a computer with Rekordbox can all be synced via ethernet and quantised, so that effects triggered on the mixer respond to deck changes instantly and vice versa. There’s also a host of Pioneer specific pairings that really increase the value of the equipment when used as a whole, such as visual feedback on the CDJs when functions such as fader start and arm are activated on the Nexus.
SUBTLE CHANGES
To facilitate the new inputs, the input select switch has turned into a dial, but other than that there’s almost no layout difference between the Nexus and its predecessor, discounting the changes to the effects. Two features have been added and gained a spot on the faceplate though, and that’s a Link Cue button, which allows cueing from Rekordbox, and a switch to allow you to set new dual mode EQs – either ‘classic’ Pioneer EQ or a new full kill fucntionality, to your preference. Newcomers can rest assured that the Nexus is a very comfortable and ergonomic mixer in use, and Pioneer veterans will find the switch a non issue.
One area that would have been nice to see an upgrade is the faders. Feeling much the same as the majority of Pioneer mixers, the upfaders are a little stiff, the crossfader is slightly plasticy, and the cut in point is a little far from the edges of the fader travel to be comfortable for super quick cuts. That said, they are created more for longevity in harsh club environments than fine scratch control. To further preserve their life, or maybe more accurately your sanity when rocking up in an abused DJ booth, not only do the faders now feature a guard that prevents foreign materials entering the fader electronics through the faceplate but the fader caps feature Pioneer’s ‘P-Lock’ system which makes it impossible for the unscrupulous DJ who came before you to yank one off to replace the one they lost on their home mixer (you know who you are!).
While on the surface the DJM 900 Nexus might appear to be an 800 with a touch strip, it’s much, much more. The effects have really brought it into the midst of current DJing expectations, and the MIDI implementation gives it massive scope; Pioneer have created another beast that will be hard to topple.

Got a quick spin of this mixer the other day. I’m still a solid Rane fan, but this really impressed me with it’s 1/4″ booth outputs! This is definitely a proffessional grade mixer.

just got this bit of equipment & I can say its the dogs bollocks go get one or upgrade NOW
And after 1,5 years in use, i can say that the db4 may sound better, and has better features but its the worst build quality there is.
Nowhere near the quality of the silver 92’s
Should have bought the 900 instead, and put the extra money in cdjs.
Anyway i am gonna do it now…better late then never.
Hi I just wanted to ask is it possible to use the nexus mixer effects with traktors effects side by side just by connecting it with a USB cable to a mac or windows laptop running the latest version of traktor? Or you can only use either traktor fx allowing no Control over the mixers effects once its in midi mode or just the mixers effects when connected to cdjs?
its like this im not buying any pioneer shit again ,going back too my vinyl decks scracth live and thats it im done
dam…. the pioneer djm900 and cdj 2000 are every dj’s chrismas dream to have for a present! rockin like crazy!
dam…. the pioneer djm900 and cdj 2000 are every dj’s chrismas dream to have for a present! rockin like crazy!
Soo im curious what people think about this mixer when compared to the 800. I finally got a chance to use the 900 last night in a club, and I have to say I prefer the effects on the 800 better. I feel the 800 is well-suited to house, disco and electro, and I feel these effects that they have added to the 900 are more aimed at the UK garage, dub and trance genres. I quite liked the SWEEP color effect on the 800!
Aside from the small improvements like the faders, and input select features, I feel the only real thing this mixer has going for it over the 800 is that sweet ass GATE/COMP!!! Thats pretty good actually. But improved sound quality? Will you really notice the difference in most clubs?
Keep in mind I dont use Traktor either, so I see that could be another big draw. But I guess I wonder why they didnt just call this mixer the 800 nexus, and save the 900 name for a REAL facelift.
The fact of the matter is your either going to buy this mixer, or your not going to buy this mixer. Pioneer has an Apple complex. They keep prices in a range that is intended to protect the prestige of their brand. Fair-weather DJs will never ‘invest’ (I use this word loosely) this amount of money into building their brand. If you have the money to do so, buy this mixer IF (and only if) it improves your setup. If not, no need to waste your time complaining.
Luistert er iemand wel eens gooe dnaar ide 900 mixer van Pioneer.

Stop keeping your old products just so you can charge rip off prices for the new ones! DJM 900 needs a Rotary option as the DJM 800 is the only rotary mixer with full midi!!!
can anyone tell me if the effects sends on the djm900 can be used at the same time as the internal beat/color effects?
Cant wait to get mine I just wish Pioneer would hurry up on sending them out to the people who already paid for them….. by the way I also hate all these so called DJs that are complaining about the price… you get what you pay for in DJ gear espeically when you have gigs every week… I have had several mixers and different cd players and turntables….. nothing has ever lasted me much longer that Pioneer gear…. so stop crying about the price…. its plain and simple “SAVE UP FOR IT”….. hussle for more gigs…. with a $2000 mixer you should be able to pay off that mixer with a few gigs under your belt.
The only product of Pioneer I might ever still consider is if they decide to bring out a pure controller version of the CDJ2000. Actually, it’s too late for that already. Scrap the whole idea. I do not consider Pioneer as a choice anymore, not in any way. They are only this so called club standard because they keep throwing money at the idea. A&H deserves that title based on quality and performance alone – if that was the sole basis for Pio mixers they would’ve been out of business looooooong time ago. Club standard, are you kidding me?!
And now Pio an NI jumped in bed together, and all of a sudden the DB4 won’t get certified??? Any DJ/performer/producer/technician worth their salt knows the DB4 outperforms the 900 probably by a factor of 10. It’s soooo much better in ALL departments – sound quality and transparency, build quality, support, bang for your buck, effects, midi, eq, channel-fx assignments, you name it, the whole thing is based on iLive technology. Pioneer can’t even dream of coming close. If only A&H can get of their arses and give Pioneer some marketing/PR competition.
DJM900, nah, thanx, but no thanx.
Can we point out that the DJM900 is 900 dollars cheaper than the DB4 at list price? If the DB4 couldn’t eat the DJM alive it would be shocking.
All you people need to stop complaining about the price. I have been using Pioneer DJ equipment for over 12 years now and let me tell you, if you plan on getting go equipment plan on spending money. I think any cd player that is $2000 is a reasonable price for the best equipment and a mixer in the $2000 is also just as reasonable. For quality, comfort, and reliability you have to pay. If you cannot afford it or find it reasonable enough you just are not that big of a DJ. Pioneer . . . YOU ROCK!!! I have 2 CDJ 2000’s, 2 CDJ 1000mk3’s, 1 DJM 800, HDJ 2000 Headphones, and have already pre-ordered the DJM 900 Nexus!!! Cant wait for it to arrive!!
I bet I could do more (creative sound) with a so so laptop and 2 50 buck controllers, any good controllerist here knows what I mean… yeah reliability ok… you could buy the setup 10 times with all this, not that you would probably have to if you get decent ones
But thats what happens when you cant afford their equipment. everyone starts hating on Pioneer!
If you could afford it im pretty sure it would be set up on your desk.
Cant fault my CDJ2000’s n 900 nxs

My Korg zero 4 has been doing what the nexus does and more since 2007. Ahead of its time I think. It did not sell that well as there was no demand for a mixer of that spec back in 2007 and the mixer was discontinued forcing the price right down. Last year you could pick them up dirt cheap, but now controllers and certified mixers are more popular prices for the ones left in shops and second hand have shot back up. I would like to see korg make a new DJ mixer and see what they can come up with now. I own pioneer mixers and use them in bars and clubs , I like the simplicity of them put do not think they justify the prices. I dont think i will ever buy any more pioneer equipment as since i have started using different equipment i no longer am a sucker for “industry standard” or following the crowd. Because most DJ equipment is now bought online people do not get the chance to try stuff out in stores so whatever we are told the best we buy as we don’t like taking risks. DJ’s should start looking at equipment like musicians do and by the best stuff that is suited to them personally. people might find they DJ a whole lot better using different equipment.

It did not sell because it was ahead of it’s time? Hahaha. How about because it got KILLED in reviews and user comments over the hissing issue and mediocre build quality.
Firmware update sorted out the hissing that was only on a handfull of mixers and the build quality is good. Was they aiming at it being installed in nightclubs? NO. It’s a studio and live performance mixer and the pots are a lot more delicate and precise than the big chunky pioneer pots. The faders and the sound quality on the zero 4 is better than my DJM 800 and the the FX are amazing. Some great equipment gets bad reviews as people have this “industry standard” mentality and are looking for the next thing to installed in all the clubs and comparing equipment that is aimed at different markets together as if its a competition. Lots of hardware now is going to have bugs as stuff is moving away from anolog. The Nexus just like the 800 is a poor midi mixer and to get the most out of it you need to buy new pioneer CD players. Just like the new CDJ’s the new mixers are hardly going to installed and limited people will be buying them as they are pricing themselves out the game. review here. http://www.skratchworx.com/reviews/zero4.php read the scores at the bottom.

This want built for a bed room DJ, it was built to replace old DJM800’s that are in need of an upgrade in club venues because they can shovel out the cash for it. As being Traktor certified… Meh no none in know uses Traktor everyone uses SSL… killer mixer though hope to get on one sooner or later!

You should get to know more people then. Traktor users number way higher then Scratchlive users in most of the world except for the USA.

The djm 900 actually eliminates the need for an audio interface for traktor. You just plug in via one USB cable and done. That’s a big deal if your the next dj going on at a huge event or even a small one. This mixer also has upgraded sound quality, upgraded channel faders, and if you own cdj-2000’s the possibilities are freaking endless. I’m just trolling, waiting for my 900 to come in. Do some research, and pioneer is the standard for a reason. It’s reliable, and they hold up for years in a club environment. I also don’t see the comparison to the db4, the db4 should be compared to the djm2000 not the 900. I just wish folks would do more research before flaming a fantastic product they know nothing about.
The denon x1700 is a better digital mixer

DJM800 seriously improved S/N (signal to Noise) ratios and lowered distortion. Plus ofered and uncornverted digital path (from dig inputs to dig output), which was a tremendous leap over the comparatively bad sounding DJM600 and all earlier mixed models.
…However DJM800 didn’t have DJ equalization!! No way of silencing the beat or the hihats with -26 dB as its max limit.
DJM400 (realeased around the same time) had EQ full kills, but lacked the 100% digital path.
DJM900 comes 4? years later to solve the dilemma; it sports full EQ Kills and has a clean unconverted 100% digital path from inputs to output.
… At a terrible price thought 🙁

not much point to this when you get traktor2 to and you have a midi mixer (mines a DDM-4000) all mapped up to traktor wherther it’s on a s4. vms4 or my ddm-midi is now the standard not pioneer any more

wow, thats a nice piece of gear there… the video does a good job of making the price seem more bearable. but if using this piece with traktor either this mixer or traktor will be losing some of its functionality, like the fx, traktor fx are already amazing, there is no need to have more built into the mixer… but then i guess they wouldnt be able to charge 2grand for it :/
great piece at a monstrous price, not sure if its worth it.

Yep – £1,599
I HATE HOW THE INDUSTRY STANDARD COMPANY SETS THE INDUSTRY STANDARD PRICE TAGS AND EVERYBODY ELSE FOLLOWS LIKE SHEEP
You got a point there for sure!
You got a point there for sure!

I use to use a controller (s4) until I got this bad boy and I’m back to cd controlled dvs. This mixer is the best bit of kit I’ve purchased in a long time and light years ahead of the dated DJM800. For all you xone fanboi’s don’t even try to compare the DB4 as they are 2 very different beasts! And nearly a 1200 dollar price difference. Full native midi to T2 = win, TSP2 certified plug & play = win, new sound card and effects = SOLD! Can’t wait to start seeing them regularly in clubs so I can ditch my audio8!
HUGE FAIL ON THE ONE USB PORT THEY COULD HAVE EASILY PUT TWO USB PORTS TO FUTURE PROOF IT LIKE IT IS SUPPOSE TOO. Haven’t used it yet but the deal breaker for some dj’s will be if the cross fader in cut mode has less cut than the djm 800. I know it is not a scratch mixer but alote of pro djs like myself know that you can scratch just as good with a djm 800 cut than any other 4 channel mixer so far I hope they either made it the same cut wise as djm 800 if not quicker cut.
STOP USING A FUCKING LABTOP! DONE SOVLED YOUR PROBLEM!
Can you replace the x-fader with an innofader? And then if you can, will the x-fade curve controls on the 900 still work?
too expensive…
I’d love to know how it handle’s T2 loop recorder/player? Seeing as it does have a send return loop, I guess it samples in post fade so how do you select which channel to send?
just too expensive for personal use… but I would def buy it over the DJM-T1 (for only a few hundred bucks more)…
Honestly I aint gunna lie…this is a sick piece of gear. I wouldnt mind having one…
But in a constantly expanding market with hundreds of new products optimized for todays digital DJ, the “Pioneer Standard” is starting to bleed a bit. I can hardly justify the price range on half the products….And the kids these days see Tiesto, Guetta and Armin Van Buuren using Pioneer gear and they all run out and buy it like its going to make them better.
Truth be told they are simply overpriced toys…I mean what idiot pays $1600 for a CDJ player when they are going to use it with USB-MP3’s anyway? Ever hear of a laptop? In fact buy two laptops, one for each channel.
Now the Allen and Heath Xone DB4 is a REAL mixer. I would fuck that thing anyday. It would eat the 900 for breakfast
I eat people, but if db4 was a woman, I would eat all day long! MAnDingo says ‘ditto’ to your comment! DB4 is the shit!!
well said, though i would say the DB4 goes head to head with djm 2000 considering there almost the same price range…but either way i have to agree the DB4 is a monster.
Okay that does it! I hate the price, but I’m grabbing one! lol. Seems the best mixer out there for me, as it gives me the best of want I want better sound, Traktor certified, CDJ interactivity, MIDI as well as old fashioned vinyl and vinyl control, plus awesome FX and intuitive layout, all in one!
Don’t sleep on the Denon DNX-1600. It’s almost half the price of the Pioneer and has all that we need from a proper Traktor-certified mixer. We need to see a a DNX-1600 vs DJM900 showdown article soon.

The x-1600 has a fatal flaw. The channel faders are awesome quality, alps faders, but denon decided a tiny screw at top and one at the bottom of the channel fader would hold up just fine. Had one for 2 weeks and one channel feel into the mixer. Even 100$ numark mixer faders are secured more. Serious oversight by denon. Sent it back, thank god I wasn’t in the club.

I’d love to see a direct comparison of 2 audio clips, one recorded with a djm 800 and the other a 900, just to see if the sound quality “improvements” are worth the switch.
I love the new touch strip but, other then the new filters, I dont see a reason to upgrade from my 800.
I’d love to compare sound quality and effects, but Xone:DB4 vs DJM900. Probably it’s pointless, DB4 will will win hands down.
Again. $2000 vs. $2900. It is expected that the more expensive one would be better.
Surprising, the forums have been very negative, it’s nice to see that it brought more than met the eye. Thanks for the review, much appreciated ;P First btw?
pioneer is messing up big time. What they’re doing is they’re bringing out all these new and amazing products but at the same time they aren’t ending their existing products. For example the 900 nexus could have easily been the DJM800 MK2. Now they’re forcing them selves to make these huge price tags for even their lower end stuff.
The djm-800 has been discontinued actually.
