Traktor Kontrol S2 – Exclusive Look

Today Native Instruments announced a new installment in their DJ line of products, the two channel all-in-one controller called Kontrol S2. This is a more portable and streamlined version of the popular Kontrol S4, which condenses a four deck workflow into a very compact form, using decks C and D as always available sample/loop players. Since I shot the S2 promo video for NI last week (video after the jump), we got the exclusive chance to really dig in and test the unit fully.

DETAILS

  • Product: Native Instruments Kontrol S2
  • Price: $699 (MSRP), $599 (Expected Retail Price)
  • Communication: MIDI over USB
  • Available Now : Exclusive Traktor S2 Bundle Deals for Dj TechTools Readers
  • Ships with: Traktor Pro S2, loop collection, international power adapter, USB 2.0 cable, Traktor Pro 2
  • Weight: 6 pounds (3.4 kg)
  • Dimensions: 17.25 x 11.5 x 1.75 inches

Good

  • Very simple loop workflow involves 4 decks without bloating controls.
  • Maintains the same professional mixer spacing of the S4 while trimming size.
  • Can run without a power supply (USB powered).
  • Separate loop/sample volume knob provides dedicated volume for decks C/D.

Bad

  • The filter knobs are gone.
  • Missing DVS/Audio inputs.
  • Lacks control over effects units 3 and 4.

Bottom Line

Simple and straight forward, the S2 provides a clear interface for mixing two tracks and a group of loops. Without a lot of controls you are forced to find creative ways to mix and interact with the music, which was a welcome change from increasingly complex DJ controllers today. Price at $599 (including Traktor Pro 2), this is going to be a hard package to beat for new DJ’s looking to get into DJing or established DJs that want a smaller controller without all the bells and whistles.

LIVE IN ACTION

The video above is a live remix I put together of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence” for this release. Rather than random controllerism madness, the focus was on creating something musically compelling that would work well on a dance floor. If you like the mix, follow my sound cloud page where we will be posting a longer DJ version soon.

  • In the left deck is a dubstep instrumental I worked up for the song.
  • In the right deck I triggered the acapella using cue points.
  • each of the 2 jog wheels are sampling and effecting the instrumental and accapella to create fills.
  • In each loop deck is a different loop that I drop over various sections and effect individually.

HARDWARE

The hardware is largely the same as the S4, but stripped down to the essentials. There are a few things missing that you might care about:

  • Dedicated filters.
  • Ability to switch decks (platters and faders).
  • Loop length indicators.
  • Cue points 5-8.
  • Loop recorder.
  • Phono inputs (for DVS control).

While some DJs may feel that these are necessary, the reality is that most of the mentioned controls are extraneous to most common mixing scenarios (except filters, which are a legitimate gripe). The S2 does provide all of the essential controls you need for basic mixing and layering loops and samples over two tracks including:

  • Transport controls.
  • Four cue points/ loop deck launching.
  • Dedicated loop volume control (similar to an aux channel input).
  • Effects routing and control over FX units 1 and 2.

The VCI-100 kicked off this wild controller interface trend and now the S2 circles back to that form factor – providing a more affordable and portable controller in the classic two deck format. We have certainly found in our own testing and conversations with artists that mixing four full decks is rarely actually used – what people really want is a simple way of layering extra sounds.

SOFTWARE

The S2 controller comes bundled with Traktor Pro 2 and does not have its own software. Instead, a new update for Traktor Pro 2 will include a custom panel in which you can configure the s2 to your personal taste.

This panel is missing the level of configuration found with the S4 (jog wheel effects are gone for example) but NI did bring one new feature to the table that more than makes up for that. They have improved the S2’s custom user mapping, so you can modify and change the way your controller works without losing all of the resolution offered by the native HID connection. This is a step up from the s4, which would only allow removal of functions by turning the controller into MIDI mode, which limited it’s functionality.

For my Depeche mode video, I built a custom mapping which added the option for FX control through the jog wheels without losing a high resolution connection. This custom mapping was based on our old Fader FX mode, allowing access to FX units 3/4, which dont have dedicated controls.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The S2 may not have any ground-breaking new features or design elements but it does do the intended task of mixing tracks and loops very well. This controller, augmented by a more performance-oriented controller could provide a great centerpiece to your DJ arsenal. My staff and I were all lamenting the lack of a filter knob but it was really nice to have a NI controller that takes up less space and has a focus on the basic mixing controls. The S4 is great, but it does end up being a bit large, and at $899 the price is simply out of some DJ’s reach. This new piece strikes a nice balance and offers a good value without scrimping too much on functionality.

Check back in with us in a month when we will have a comprehensive review of the brand new Kontrol S2.

is there loop recorder option in s2 ??

  • Xponent Torch

Guys I think the story about S2 is overdone just because of its older brother S4 and the well known family of Native Instruments. I use the Xponent Torch combination and its several times better than S2. I wouldnt say thes vs S4 but guys this S2 sucks big time! M-Audio was not that marketed all over the net but believe me the usabillity of Torq Xponenet is at least  1.5 times better than S2/Traktor. S2 just has not ehough buttons vs Xponent that has a tone more to offer for this price range. And than this missleading info for the microphone looping/mixing combination :(((( I was so pissed of when I payed for S2 and saw that this peace of expencive shit doesent offer the mike looping possibillities that S4 has. You can nowhere find the info on the net that this doesent work on S2 and this is pretty missleading a lot of users to buy something they will not have on S2. And yes the FX section is kinda so-so done. When you have to be fast and effective in the mix – forget it you should have an extra hand to push a few buttons at the same time. Guys, if YOU own the Xponenet do NOT CHANGE it for an sucky S2. Never do it! If you buy an S4,..well ok this is pretty much a lot different story.

Just got the Traktor S2 and set it up with a MacBook. Work fine except in what I think are 2 respects.
     1.  The main volume control at the top of the controller does not appear to be mapped to sync with the software.  I can adjust the volume on the screen or with the knob, bit they work independent of each other.  Any ideas anyone?
Also, the dry/wet FX buttons don’t light up when pressed (right one did for a while then stopped)

Great information on the S2. I am definitely looking into making the purchase in 2012 from your site! Great bundle deal.

is it possible to switch from VirtualDj to Traktor and have all of my already set cue points from VDJ transfer to Traktor??? I’m about to switch from a hercules 4mx (bc of lack of ability to use effects) and get the S2 but i don’t want to if A. i have to pay for the full software on top of that and B.can’t transfer all my cue points and data.

Also if I hooked up a deck for a pal to scratch on, could I put it down the mic channel and can I add effects to that?

  • Diggatron

A few things I’d like to know:
1/ Whilst there are no filter nobs, you can assign one of the three fx nobs as a filter can’t you?
2/ If I use echo on one track, and then stop the track, does the echo tail off?
3/ Is the internal sound card quality of this good enough for a big system if I use wavs?
4/ Can you put FX onto the samples – eg if I wanted to delay it?

    Thanks!

You can use many controllers together. If you use the search, you should be able to find an article that explains setting it up.

I posted in the General Forum for advice on S4 vs. S2 vs. MC-6000 since I don’t have a controller for Traktor yet (currently making the switch from Serato), but I didn’t get any replies :(.  Beginner on my way to intermediate.  I think innate creativity is more crucial than features and I’m kind of needing a controller pretty soon.  So I think I’m more interested in a solid piece of hardware that will last.  Hence, these comments have me actually leaning toward the MC-6000, particularly since I already own Pro 2.  (Or, making my VCI-300 work but I did already try that and it was by far less than ideal.)  So I guess the MC-6000–unless there are other options people feel I should explore…

i own an s4 and its build quality is so bad!!! 6 months and buttons stop to work!!!(s2 has the same build quality, i was reading eans review of ns6 and u can tell he is an ni boy!on here he dosent diss the buiild quality at all! but on ns6 he was dising it cause the midi.tsi for traktor wasnt so good(its made for serato itch!), now what`s more important, how long b4 your gear breaks down or an midi tsi you can make as well!!!) and i am not alone in this with s4 check the forums!!! as for comparing s2 mc6000?
mc6000 is miles better and cost a little more!you might wanna check ns6 as well ,its great to use with s.itch!
but dont do the same mistake as i did , go for something that can last 2 years!!! usually around xmas new controllers popout!! maybe waiting a few months and get the latset tech isnt a bad idea!

      • DJ Brandon Curtis

Thanks MB.  I saw your post above.  I also read a LOOONG thread with people dissing Denon for not having (a firmware update I believe–for the S2?) out for a very long time that Denon finally posted.  That was kind of a turn off on Denon but I’m still liking the sturdy feel of the unit.  I have some disposable income but that doesn’t mean I want to be trading in controllers every few months as you say.  😉  Thanks for your follow up.  I’ll let you know.  I’m feeling the need for something pretty soon.  You mentioned the Pioneer, too.  I’ll look at that.  Thanks again!

Man, the ONLY thing that is keeping me from buying this thing is the missing filters! How can you leave those out??

  • Controller Buyer

I was wondering if it would be possible to use the Samples A/B buttons or the reset tempo buttons to switch A/C and B/D if you want to use 4 track decks instead of 2 tracks plus sample decks. If this is possible, than S2 wins over Twitch with a smile on the face.

  • dj ahlon

will it work on traktor scratch pro 2? or i need to install also that software bundled with s2?

  • Someone

If you understand what’s Ean doing, you’ll find it great… if not… then not….b 😛

  • Manta McLovin

Neither read the article properly nor watched the video but I have to say that I’m disappointed. Didnt NI even take one single look at the mockup thread on the forum??? There’s a bunch of great ideas. S2 might be a great device but it’s not what I expected to be NI’s next step.
Seems like they try to appeal to bedroomers.

  • Anonymous

perhaps it is something unique to the s2?

  • Anonymous

Yes, you’d need to make a custom map for that.

  • Anonymous

“They have improved the S2?s custom user mapping, so you can modify and
change the way your controller works without losing all of the
resolution offered by the native HID connection.”

This means they have removed the “inappropriate control” error message when mapping, and every custom map behaves as standard midi right? We could make a single knob turn on and effect and change dry/wet in the same motion correct?

  • MB

I do own an s4. my exprience? well what can relay to s2 any way.
Build quality. s2 has the same build quality as s4.
within 6 months my efx on/off sometimes dosent work! 1 of efx encoders dosent work properly either and this arent covered by waranty.
my headphone jack in gives only sound to on side of head phone.
now i have found others with similair problem. looking at s2/s4 u can tell its not pro dj built quality straight away(looks like an toy.).
that just not good enough specially like me if u need to use it 4 times a week at gigs. u dont buy an controller for 6 months but 2-3 year!!!!!
thats not much about that in the review Ean. look at ns6 , mc-6000, djtt(pioneer) and they all have pro built quality !!!!
so if you are for an controller that last u sometime this isnt the one!!!
another thing if the gain encoders are the same as s4 than they are useless(the worst gain encoder ever made and autogain isnt accurate!!).
now s4 is great on some stuff like looping, loop recorder but i regret spending money on it and 6 months down the road thinking of buying a new contoller!!!!
another thing is that it is hid and u cant change anything on hid (like using your gain for filter) unless you dont use hid but use midi fully.
to be honest i googled mc-6000 and found it for 510£ thats 10£ more.
but it is miles better than s2!!!!!! for starters it has an real mixer!!!
so no worries if traktor crashes, and the real eq sounds better than eq on traktor(try hi on traktor and a real mixer and u hear the difference)
it is better build! it has to mic input, xlr output, monitor output where u can even chosse which source goes to monitor. all in all s2 is good for bedroom djs but why buy an nissan when u can have an audi for same price?

  • Noelflava

    Nice!
Too bad no filter knobs but more than enough to rock a sweet party set.
Not an S4 but not far from it for the the price, and smaller footprint… Tempted to pick one up just for its portability.

  • Jorge

Hello Ean. I was reading your review on the S2 and I can see that you get frustated with things like they have not included the filter knobs.
I can also see that the final layout of the controller is all down to the guys of NI.

With all the experience that you have gained making the S4 and S2. Why don´t you create your very own controller? That way you would be free to include whatever you what on it.
My opinion is that the S4 and S2 are very good but they are all built within a budget, I would love to see a controller with no restrictions.

The best knobs, the best faders, the best jogwheels… no excuses. (maybe 2 versions of the controller 1 portable and the other not as portable with absolutely massive motorized jogwheels with lots of space to manipulate the controls)
Why not sell each part separately so for example if somebody doesn´t want the jogwheels that person will be able to buy just the controller itself. I think that way you can concentrate freely on building every part properly without being concern about the space. I know the final product could be expensive, BUT we will sleep tight at night knowing that we have the best of the best and that it is 100% your own creation.

Come on Ean ! Whatever you create or whatever project you are involved in people can´t wait to get their hands on.

    We are with you.

This looks cool but…  I’ve had the Original VCI-100 for a few years on Firmware 1.2 and don’t really see a reason to upgrade.  I’ve not seen anything yet come into the market that offers the VCI-100s stability, robustness and sheer usability for the same cost, even though the market seems to have been flooded with alot MIDI controllers.  Now I may be bias since i’ve got my unit set it up to work just how I want it to, but for someone like me who plays RnB, Hip-Hop, Reggae and Dance music on a standard 2 deck setup  I can’t see what more this has to offer me.

I’m assuming the new mapping stuff will make it to the S4 as well. I don’t see any technical reason why that wouldn’t be the case. It seems to me that it will probably be in the next Traktor update.

I have the S4 and frankly I’d rather have the smaller unit. I may sell the S4 and get this instead. Not sure yet. I got the S4 on release but its just gathering dust at the moment.

I like it, I don’t like price, NI has discounts on software upgrade, what about hardware from S4 to S2 or even External Audio Cards

Controller is exactly what I need, funny thing is I have now:

    X1
    Traktor 3
    Traktor Pro
    Traktor Pro 2
    Audio 4

    now…. S2

is all piling up and then  EAN  GOLDEN —– EAN GOLDEN  YOU ALL KNEW IT WAS COMING WHY NOT SHARED THAT!!!

Until official released, what’s the point of your WEBSITE if it DOESN’T STAY AHEAD OF RELEASES.. for us Readers??

Maybe Ean is bound by a contract? I don’t see a problem. Ean obviously has had the S2 for some time and gave us a great insight into it, the good and the bad, on the day of the official announcement and that is all we really need. He helps his readers make a buying decision with his experience. Thanks Ean!

Sure, for those of you, who bought the S4 in the past few weeks and would rather have bought an S2 for the money had you known it was coming, are pretty much out of luck. But, with the S4 you do have the value you have paid for too. It IS a good piece of equipment.

    Ean,

Very impressive performance. I’m more of a scratch guy than controllerist, but that was a great use of the tech to put on a good show.

I’m not hugely impressed with the S2, as a DVS guy I don’t see how it would fit into my setup. Although I’m hoping the S4’s price may decrease which would allow me to use it as a mixer.

    Cheers

Cool! I can also see from this an x2 announce which would be the mixer section of the s2. Surely there’s a reason why the x1 is on sale. Either they[NI] introduce an x2 which would be an x1 with the s2’s mixer or simply the mixer portion of s2. That could work. Also, considering the price of an x1, you could buy two x1’s and an x2(if it exists)  and be all set for about the same price as the s2. Nice controller…waiting to see what’s next for NI’s hardware.

If this supported DVS I’d be all over this like a rash. I was excited before I realised it didn’t.
I suppose it needs not to have that feature to help keep the S4 more attractive for the higher price.

That aside, the S2 will sell well, but personally if it was my money I’d go for a Twitch (jogs v no jogs preference would apply).

If you look a bit more closely, it is more than just a “filter ride” with the jog wheels. The right jog controls 3 effects and 3 parameters for those effects simulaneously. Something you can’t do with one or even two hands.

The left jog also controls three effects and two parameters.

And the fact Ean is performing and “feeling his music” is his thing. I also found his jerky hand action to be strange at first. But I actually like it now. It is his way of performing and this mix, of one of my all-time favorite bands, is downright sensational.

HATER, Ean is really talented. All this is about is having fun, who doesn’t make “weird” gestures when they are feeling the music on any instrument. A controller is just another instrument (in my opinion the best instrument). NO crowd cares about DJ Ego anymore complaining that using a controller isn’t real Djing. Music is evolving, technology is evolving, and all the djs complaining about controllerism being “poser” are not evolving or progressing themselves. Quit hating, and go make something creative with your time instead lurking a blog that posts mostly about controllers. Don’t like what you see get out.

If you are standing in front of several hundred people playing music, your performance *has* to involve more than simply starting tracks and triggering loops. People are watching as much as listening, and they feed off the visual energy of the DJ as well as the musical energy. No-one wants to watch a boring DJ. They want to see someone immersed in the joy of music, as Ean demonstrates in his performances.

      • Nope

dude… ive rocked for thousands of ppl. always always always entertain the crowd. we live in the moments of music and spinning is absolutely vital for our collective joy. the amount of hate u have is hilarious. oh… and just to prove it… http://www.motoehaus.com just so u know im not you. lol!

        • Brent Silby Maestro B

Well, why even turn up to the venue then? Just supply a pre-record if you think people don’t want to look at you. In fact, let’s cancel all live band performances too. Based on your expert opinion, people don’t want to watch performances, they just want to watch graphics and visuals while listening to the music.

I dare you to try raising your arms in the air and start clapping one night and involve yourself with the crowd. You’ll find they respond. They want to connect to the DJ. Try it out one night.

Dude, he’s like always, *always* since back in the vci 100 days used the jog wheels to control effects.  It’s because the pressure on the platter is another midi control so along with the platter itself it lets him control two things with one hand, making it better than just a knob.

It will be interesting to see what kind of success the S2 has. Of course they’re kind of counting on the knee jerk reaction of  “Hey it’s $300 cheaper than the S4! I’m SOLD, Dude!”.

I like that they set limitations on the S2 and keep you focused on two decks plus extras coming from dedicated sample decks. Someone has discovered that less is in fact more when you’re actually mixing music for people.

Personally, I’m more interested in what they intend to introduce that will replace (or augment) the X1 controller. I need a browse function for Traktor, I need cue point, loops, sample decks, and FX control. If I want to keep it totally in the box and mix from inside the mac then I’d want EQ controls, and volume faders. Maybe a crossfader…in fact here…

If I were going to design a controller to compete with the S2 I would keep it at the same footprint dimensions, then I would eliminate the pitch slider. I would add a dedicated filter knob, and I would seriously consider doing away with the jog wheel. If all it’s there to do is become assignable to a parameter of your choice then why not replace it with a series of knobs, or arcade buttons that could accomplish the same thing? The platter takes up a lot of real estate, and it’s a carry over from a CDJ and a turntable. But perhaps in the future digital DJ’s won’t use a “platter” at all. If you want to create interesting mixes of really tasty music, you’re not “scratching” and trying to “get down” with your controller skills, the “platter” area can be utilized for something else. Just a thought.

The S2 is OK, but I’d like to see some different designs hit the marketplace before I hand over more cash for a new controller.

true in deed i like to see something like the arcade buttons  with a touch strip to drop or select where you wanna go then i suggest they just say hey why not just put fader rotary knobs  for the volume fader and tempo put a cdj size plater  but at the top  just in case you want to scrath

If you want to scratch you get an S2 or S4 – there should be an S1 w/o jogs and basically be an x1 and mixer combined. That’s all most of us need.

If you really are a turntablist, use turn tables.

built in soundcard, booth out, and mic input are great. If you dont have a vci100 already then this is for you.

My gripe more was the fact that this product didnt make any progress forward. This is close to the same product that came out 5 yrs ago for more money and less effects. Just my opinion.

Wow really great remix Ean, good job on that. I’m not usually into Dubstep, but I like that more chill kind of stuff (vs say Skrillex). I’ll be looking forward to the Soundcloud post. I’m getting into controllers to do exactly those kinds of mixes, i.e. custom adding vocals to instrumental tracks in real time on the dance floor so if I want to play vocal sets I’m not restricted to already vocal tracks (which more often then not are a bit cheesy compared to instrumental tracks, at least for house music imo).

Also that S2 looks pretty interesting. Using a cheap Numark Mixtrack for now as my main controller and it’s actually much better than I thought it’d be, but I’ll probably be upgrading to either an S4 or this S2 at some point.

great concept, should destroy the pioneer controllers as it looks like it would be perfect for serato and assuming someone will map it accordingly. personally i use all 4 decks so i like my s4 layout

Just wanted to say it was a great video you did for NI.

I personally rarely use 3/4 deck mixing, so this controller would be perfect for me. On the other hand I have been using controllers for the last years (Reloop DJ2, VCI-100) and came to the conclusion that I might want to go back to using pioneers with timecode because of the aesthetics.

Great review, thanks for your work over the years.

Can i just map of of the other buttons/knobs to be a filter? Or make the platter work as a filter?

Very nice.  I was about to buy the S4 this fall.  I don’t know, but I think I just found myself a new best friend.  😛  I’ll lose the filter knobs for 400 bucks in savings.  Haha.

another big plus about this is it HAS A BOOTH OUT, they better make a new s4 with that too

This controller makes perfect sense to me.  I mix two regular decks and two sample decks with the sample decks being at full volume all the time using the individual sample slot controls for volume. In fact I’ve got decks C & D on my mixer going through the same channel. The only thing I can hope for is that NI will eventually release it as a controller only option for those that already have traktor. NI knocking the $199 would be much easier than trying to sell the software that comes with the controller. Plus you would never get full value for it.

    Ean –
Any chance of doing a video explaining how you put that remix together like you did for the Ozzy video? EMWTK!

I personally would like to know what your thought process was as you chose one loop or sample versus another… The technical part is the easy part, there are tutorials, videos, etc. that will show you how to punch the buttons — the artistic part is where I would like see some discussion.  Why did you decide to use the pieces you used vs. other possible choices?

So how about it? Can you give us a peek into your creative process?

    • Ean Golden

Yes! there is another video that explains it and I will go into more detail in the post in about 2 weeks.

Mr. Ean golden will, you be making a second more comprehensive video about the s4 functionality anytime soon. Please reply, just wanna have something to look forward to if those are your intentions. Your new s2 video was totally awesome, love the smoothy sound.

One short Question: How are your joggwheels mapped? I was trying to map my S4 like this, but the effektknobs in Traktor only move veeeery slowly. Altough i have the sensibility an acceleration turned up all the way. How have you adjust the jogwheels?

Hi Ean.  I’m a newbie but on my way.  Getting good with Traktor Pro 2 and an X1 and trying to decide between the S2, S4 or something else.  I posted elsewhere but forgot to say how much I liked your video (plus this site in general).  It doesn’t hurt that I’m a big fan of Depeche Mode, being “of that generation” shall we say.  Guess I’m not too old to be doing this after all.  Looking forward to getting more involved in the community!

Turn on auto gain. Map gain knobs to filter. Done.

If the gain knobs are like the S4’s, then it’ll be a click knob, making it a bit awkward to use as filter knobs. The gain knobs also spin indefinitely left and right and don’t have a center indent.

      • Facebook User

I use a different controller, but i use click knobs for faders. I just set it up such that whenever I click, it resets the filter to the 0% position.

totally decent suggestion- encoders work really well as filters with the push state for on/off. only problem would be a display state.

Well here’s how i would map it to get around those issues.
-Map filter on and amount to the encoder movement
-Map filter off and reset to the push state
That way you can just grab the encoder and start twisting it to filter to your hearths content, then when your done filtering just push the know and the filter will be off and back to center ready for the next filtering session.

I’m still a pretty noob dj (been at it for a little over a year) and just bought the S4 last week. With my limited skills, the S2 controller sounds right up my alley. Damn! I’d have to lose money on the restocking fee to take the S4 back so I guess I’m stuck with it.

Same thing happened to me when I started deejaying last year. Bought a Numark Mixdeck in August and about a month into learning Traktor found out that S4 was coming out in Nov. If it weren’t for bad luck… LOL

Will an s4 update offer the same enhanced midi update?

  • Yuppiecore78

since I do not care at all about samples, is there any way to use the LOOP SAMPLES VOLUME as FILTER? i see there is a knob called SAMPLE, which has 2 little buttons nearby (which should be “3” and “4”). now, an idea could be press 3 toggle filter for deck A and move the knob down to have a low pass and move the knob higher to have a high pass… wold this be possible??

    • Chris Jennings

Since they’ve improved the user mapping capabilities I would think you could use it like that. Time will tell though.

I would argue that this was a very creative mix with a tasteful use of effects. Yes, dubstep is popular but it doesn’t mean it can’t be implemented well.

I was being more specific then just Dubstep.

simple or slow Dubstep/glitchhop + chart topping acappella hit over the top =  every west coast party every time.

Its getting to the point of OMG STOP like the Electro house + top 40 mashes that haven’t stopped coming for a decade.
